In 2010, 280 students received more than $180,000 in awards, bursaries and scholarships.

Established in 1991, the North Island College Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting North Island College in its task to provide the skills and knowledge students need for successful employment and further education. The Foundation’s primary objective is to provide student scholarships and bursaries, as well as operating equipment and educational resources.

Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, made up of community leaders from the College region, the Foundation actively seeks donations for the College. Through the continued support of individuals, local businesses, and organizations, which are committed to assisting students, these efforts are realized.

Individuals and businesses are invited to share in the vision of North Island College by making a meaningful contribution to a bright future for our students.

- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? - Scholarships

Scholarships are funds awarded to students for academic achievement. Please refer to the application instructions and application form in this booklet. Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are awarded to full-time students taking a minimum 24 credits.

BursariesBursaries are funds designed to assist students who demonstrate financial need. Students must meet specific eligibility criteria and must submit an application. Please refer to the application instructions and application form in this booklet.

Scholarships and bursaries must be used in the year awarded.

Adult Basic Education Achievement Award $100This recipient must either be or recently have been a student registered in Adult Basic Education. The recipient will be chosen by a consensus of the Adult Basic Education faculty based on their selection criteria.

Andrew Sheret Limited Scholarship $500This scholarship is available to a Plumbing and Piping program student at North Island College. The scholarship will be granted to the student who has successfully completed the program and has demonstrated the greatest motivation to succeed in their field.

BC Hydro Scholarship $1,160The recipient of this award must be enrolled in full-time studies and maintain an excellent GPA. Special attention should be given to students in science and/or computer technology oriented programs.

Canadian Tire Courtenay Scholarship $615This scholarship is available to a Business Administration student entering the third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program at North Island College. The scholarship will be granted to the student most likely to succeed in the business world.

Certified General Accountants Association of BC - Academic Excellence Scholarship $500

This scholarship is awarded annually to an accounting student who has completed the first year of the two-year Business Administration Diploma Program (Accounting Option) at North Island College. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the first year of the recipient’s program. The scholarship will be applied to tuition fees when the recipient enrols in the second year of the Business Administration Diploma program (Accounting Option) at North Island College.

Certified General Accountants Association of BC - Continuing Education Tuition Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship is awarded annually to a student graduating from the Business Administration Diploma Program (Accounting Option) at North Island College. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and will be credited toward tuition fees when the recipient enrols in the professional education program of the Certified General Accountants Association of BC. This scholarship is valid for the academic year following the award; the academic year is from September to June.

Golden Oldies Car Club Scholarship $375This award is presented to the student achieving the second highest standing in the Automotive program at the Port Alberni campus

Keith Wagner Memorial Scholarship $685The recipient of this award will be a Comox Valley student who has completed first year English in the preceding term and who has successfully completed at least two other first year university transfer courses. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the highest grades achieved in the first year English course. First year English shall be understood to mean courses in composition and literature that have transfer credit with the universities in BC.

Leslie and Rosina Ball Memorial Scholarship $540The recipient of this scholarship will be a continuing, full-time student who has maintained the highest academic standing in the BSc Nursing program at the end of the first year. The recipient must be enrolling in the second year of the Nursing program at the Comox Valley campus and be a Comox Valley resident. The scholarship will be applied to the student’s tuition account for the second year of study.

Marc Hylands Scholarship 2 awards of $1,350This award, named in honour of long time Campbell River community member Marc Hylands, will be granted on the basis of academic achievement. The recipient will have completed the Business Administration Diploma program while attending on a full-time basis. While the student may attend either the Campbell River campus or the Comox Valley campus, the student must reside in Campbell River.

Margaret Gracza Fine Art Scholarship $2,000This award is available to a North Island Fine Arts student who has successfully completed the first year of the Fine Arts & Design program and is continuing on to the second year. The award is named after Minnesota artist, Margaret Ann Young Gracza, a Fulbright Scholarship Winner to the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. An exhibition of the winner’s work can be arranged by the donor. Fine Arts Faculty will select the recipient. The award is to be applied to tuition.

Monk Office Supply Scholarship $500This scholarship is for a North Island College student who is graduating from an Applied Business Technology or Office Management Certificate program. The award will be presented to the student who has demonstrated excellence in peer assistance and communication. Additional consideration will be given to students who have participated in College activities and/or their local business community activities.

North Island College - Foundation Scholarship 25 awards of $500

$500 will be awarded to the highest achiever in most North Island College programs. Some programs may award on a regional rotation basis.

North Island College - Maths/Science Department Scholarship $TBA

These two awards are provided by NIC’s maths/science faculty and staff for the highest achievers in the University Studies and Adult Basic Education Math/Sciences programs.

Peter Robinson Award of Excellence - Graduating Fine Arts Scholarship 2 awards of $1,145

The purpose of these awards is to recognize achievement of excellence in fine arts. The recipients of these awards will be North Island College students who have successfully completed the Fine Arts Diploma program. The award will be granted on the basis of their academic achievement and demonstrated excellence in their chosen fine arts discipline. Fine Arts faculty and a representative of the Fine Arts Advisory Committee will nominate and select the recipients. A secondary consideration will be the students’ intent to pursue a career in a fine arts discipline or to pursue further post-secondary education in fine arts.

Port Alberni Campus Administrators’ Scholarship $200This award is provided by donations from the administrators of NIC’s Port Alberni campus. The scholarship is available to an outstanding student who has demonstrated leadership, citizenship, and has worked to enhance campus life.

Port Alberni Campus Support Staff Scholarship $TBAThis award is provided by donations from the Port Alberni campus support staff to recognize academic achievement in Office Administration. The scholarship is available to a student who has completed the Applied Business Technology Certificate program and has demonstrated proficient office skills.

Rhoda Campbell Memorial - Early Childhood Education Scholarship $415

This scholarship is available to a full-time student who has successfully completed the Early Childhood Care & Education Program at the Port Alberni campus. The recipient must have excelled in the area of practice.

Shirley Wagner Memorial Scholarship $685This award is available to a student attending North Island College at any location other than the Comox Valley campus. The recipient of this award will have completed first year English in the preceding term and successfully completed at least two other first year university transfer courses. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the highest grades achieved in the first year English course. First year English shall be understood to mean courses in composition and literature, which have transfer credit with the universities in BC.

Simo Nurme Memorial Scholarship $400This scholarship, created by the staff and faculty of the Port Alberni campus and Port Alberni ElderCollege, is in memory of Simo Nurme, North Island College faculty member and President of the Port Alberni Historical Society. The award will be granted on the basis of academic achievement to a full-time or part-time student who has successfully completed at least one of the history courses offered at the Port Alberni campus and who has demonstrated a strong and keen interest in history.

Stan Price Scholarship $400This award, created in memory of Calgary artist, Stan Price, is to recognize an outstanding student in North Island College’s Fine Arts program. The student must be graduating from the NIC diploma program with the intent of moving into the Emily Carr Degree program offered at North Island College. The recipient of the scholarship must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated excellence in the student’s chosen Fine Arts discipline.

Umeek Scholarship $250This award is available to a North Island College student, of self-declared aboriginal origin, with the most improved grades in maths and sciences over a period of two years. The recipient will be enrolled in either first or second year university level maths and sciences at the Port Alberni campus.

Acklands-Grainger Equipment Award $1,000Since 2009, this college-wide award has been available to an accomplished North Island College student graduating from any trades program. To be eligible to receive the $1,000 gift certificate from Acklands-Grainger, applicants must submit an application, including a short essay describing who they are, their personal goals and aspirations, as well as their commitment to their community. A selection committee comprised of faculty from the Trades & Technology Division will choose the recipient.

Comox Valley Rotary Clubs - Vancouver Foundation Scholarship $2,000

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time continuing student at the Comox Valley campus in recognition of the student’s high calibre of academic work, and extracurricular contributions to the College and their community. Upon receipt of the successful student’s certificate of registration for their next year, the Vancouver Foundation will issue the funds to be applied to the student’s tuition.

Co-operators Scholarship $455This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time continuing student who has completed the first year of the two-year Business Administration program at North Island College. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the recipient’s first year of study. Preference will be given to a student who has been actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. The scholarship will be applied to tuition fees when the recipient enrolls for the second year of the program.

Lazo Women’s Institute Scholarship 2 awards of $930This scholarship, created by the Lazo Women’s Institute, is available to a continuing full-time or part-time North Island College university studies student who has demonstrated academic excellence. The recipient must reside within School District No. 71 (Comox Valley), be a Canadian citizen, and be attending North Island College’s Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses. The scholarship will be applied to tuition fees upon registration. Preference will be given to a member, or a relative of a member, of the BC Women’s Institute.

Munro Family Scholarship $1,000This award is available to a student graduating from a Comox Valley high school, whose ordinary residence is in the Comox Valley, and who exemplifies excellence in music, academics, athletics and community involvement. The recipient should have played regularly with the Strathcona Symphony, or similar orchestra, and demonstrate proof of scholastic standing and acceptance to North Island College or other institution of the recipient’s choice, preferably in the study of music. Applicants should submit a short essay about themselves, describing their accomplishments, contributions to the community, and plans for the future. A reference from a high school teacher and/or administrator should accompany the application. The recipient will be determined by a panel, comprised of representatives of North Island College Foundation and a descendent of Charles Grant Munro or proxy. The panel may choose to interview the applicants to assist in the selection of the recipient.

AB Ball Memorial Bursary $590This bursary will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in four or more courses per semester in the Business Administration Diploma program at the Comox Valley campus. Alberni Valley Medical Society Bursary $235This award is available to a student at North Island College’s Port Alberni campus whose goal is to pursue education and/or training in the health care profession. The recipient must have successfully completed at least one semester of study and be continuing on a full-time or part-time basis. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need and have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Arrowsmith Rotary Club Bursary $500This award is available to a student who is continuing their education and who has demonstrated volunteer service and/or service to the Port Alberni community. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need.

B&C Food Distributors Bursary $250Eligibility: Culinary Arts Student. The recipient of this award must be planning to continue their career in the Culinary Arts. The recipient will be chosen based on their commitment and passion for Culinary Arts. 2. Include a Personal Statement. Ensure that your full name, signature, and your NIC student number are included on your Personal Statement. Your Personal Statement describes your principal interests and activities. It includes community, volunteer and leadership activities, athletic involvement, offices held and awards received. Remember to outline your academic and career goals. Include any additional information that supports the criteria of the Award(s) you are applying for.

Comox Valley Horticultural Society Bursary $800This award is available to a North Island College student attending on a part-time or full-time basis at the Comox Valley campus. The recipient of this award will have successfully completed at least one semester at the College in a field related to horticulture, agriculture, environmental sciences, first year sciences or the preparation for such. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in horticulture or agriculture. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need and have maintained a successful academic standing.

Comox Valley Potters’ Club Bursary $200This award, generously created by the Comox Valley Potters’ Club, is available to a North Island College Fine Arts (clay and/or pottery) student who has completed the first year and is continuing on to the second year of the program. David Clements Family Teacher Bursary $565This award, created by the family of David Clements, a long-time Comox Valley school teacher and resident, is available to a full-time North Island College student whose goal is to become a teacher. The recipient of this award will be a grade 12 graduate from School District No. 71 (Comox Valley) who has successfully completed one year of university transfer courses, and is continuing on to year two at NIC. Preference will be given to a student whose interests in the arts, athletics, community service, and/or outdoor pursuits can be used to enhance their teaching career. The bursary will be applied to the student’s account for the second year of study.

David N Hudson Bursary* $315This award, created in the name of a long-standing educator with North Island College, is available for a student enrolled in a NIC distance course(s). The student must have a demonstrated financial need and be an entering student or a student continuing their studies at NIC. Preference will be given to a student attending North Island College’s Mt. Waddington campus, or an NIC Centre.

David Whitworth/Tom Cross Trades Bursary $215The recipient of this bursary must have been, or currently be, enrolled in an Industrial Training program. To be eligible for this award, the student must not be sponsored at the time of training, and have enrolled for the purpose of gaining the necessary certification or skills upgrading to secure employment. Special consideration will be given to those who have shown above average academic achievement and the attributes to be successful in their trade.

Denise Forest Memorial Bursary* $620This award is available to an entering or a continuing student attending the Comox Valley campus on either a full-time or part-time basis. As with all bursaries the recipient must have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to recipients who actively support the principles of equality as they relate to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups.

Denman Conservancy Association - David Fraser Bursary $555

This award is available to a Comox Valley campus student who is pursuing education and/or training in sciences, natural resources, conservation, environmental studies or community conservancy. The recipient must be a continuing student who has maintained satisfactory academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. The student may be attending on a full-time or part-time basis. The awards will be granted on the basis of academic proficiency and demonstrated financial need in addition to one or more of the following criteria: single mothers advancing their education; mature women retraining in anticipation of returning to the workforce after a long absence; women pursuing education in non-traditional fields of study; and women who have overcome exceptional challenges and educational barriers.

Mt. Waddington Campus Adult Basic Education Bursary $TBAThis award is available to a continuing full-time or part-time student attending the Mt. Waddington campus. The student must be taking ABE (upgrading) courses at the fundamental or intermediate level. Students applying for this bursary must have a demonstrated financial need and must have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Mt. Waddington Campus - Applied Business Technology Bursary $520

This award is available to a continuing full-time or part-time student attending the North Island College Mt. Waddington campus or an NIC Centre. The recipient will be an Applied Business Technology student who has shown great perseverance in working towards their educational goals and must have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Mt. Waddington Campus - Maths/Science Award $TBAThis award is available to a continuing (full-time or part-time) student attending the Mt. Waddington campus or taking distance courses through the Mt. Waddington campus. The student preferably will be taking a university transfer math course or be upgrading their math for this purpose. If there is not a suitable math student, then a student upgrading their chemistry or biology or taking a university level biology course may be considered. Students applying for this bursary must have a demonstrated financial need and must have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Native Sons & Canadian Daughters Bursary 3 awards of $585These bursaries are available to North Island College students who reside in the Comox Valley. The recipients must have completed at least one full-year of study and be continuing their education on a full-time basis at NIC. Preference will be given to a member or relative of the Native Sons or Canadian Daughters. The recipients must have demonstrated financial need. The bursaries will be applied to tuition upon registration.

North Island College Health Sciences Award $400This award is available to a female student, specifically a single mother with an unmet financial need, who is continuing her studies at NIC’s Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses in any field related to health care, biology or sciences.

North Island College Spirit of Campbell River Bursary $TBAThis award, created by employees at the Campbell River campus, is for a student who contributes to the spirit of the campus through participation in campus events.

North Island Students’ Union Bursary 3 awards of $230These bursaries, created by the North Island Students’ Union, Local 72, are available to continuing students enrolled in any full or part-time program and attending any North Island College campus. Preference for this award will be given to students who have been actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. The students must also have a demonstrated financial need.

NVI Mining Ltd Myra Falls Operations Bursary $270This award is available to a continuing, full-time student in a university studies science program at either the Campbell River campus or the Comox Valley campus. A student applying for this bursary must have successfully completed one full year of transfer credits and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in engineering, environmental studies, geology, metallurgy, computer sciences or a related field of study. The bursary will be applied to tuition fees.

Pat Bevan Rural Student Bursary $870This award is available to a mature rural student with a demonstrated financial need. The student must be in their second or further semester of full-time or part-time studies at North Island College. A major determining factor will be the distance between the applicant’s permanent home address within the North Island College region and the College campus they attend.

Pat Bevan Women’s Bursary 2 awards of $870The recipients of these awards must be mature female students with an unmet financial need. The students may be enrolled in either full or part-time studies. Preference will be given to students who reside on one of the Islands that North Island College serves.

Pateman Family Bursary $625This bursary is available to a student entering the third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration - Accounting major program at North Island College’s Comox Valley campus. The recipient must be a full-time student who demonstrates satisfactory academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has actively volunteered in the community. The bursary will be applied to the recipient’s tuition upon registration.

Paul Arbour Memorial Bursary $370This award is available to a continuing full-time or part-time student taking university transfer courses. Preference will be given to a student who is majoring in Business or the Social Sciences. Students applying for this bursary must have a demonstrated financial need and have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Perpetual Gratitude Award $250This award is available to a student who has overcome exceptional challenges and barriers, and who has completed at least one semester of study at North Island College. Priority will be given to an ABE student. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need.

Port Alberni Association of Community Living Bursary $250This award is available to a worthy student in the Human Services program demonstrating an interest in the field of developmental disabilities and children with special needs.

Port Alberni Campus Bursary* $580This award is available to a continuing or entering student attending the Port Alberni campus. The student must have a demonstrated financial need. Students applying for this bursary must submit a brief outline summarizing how the bursary would contribute to their continuing education and/or employment upgrading goals. This award will be applied to tuition fees.

Port Alberni ElderCollege Bursary $500Established by the Port Alberni ElderCollege in memory of founding members, Hans Affourtit and Val Hughes, this award supports a mature student continuing their studies in any program offered at NIC’s Port Alberni campus. The recipient must be a resident of Port Alberni, either a full- or part-time student who works very hard at his/her studies, and demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has actively volunteered in the community. In addition to the personal statement, applicants should include two letters of reference, one from a current instructor, and the second from a community agency where the applicant has volunteered. The bursary will be applied to the recipient’s tuition upon registration.

Port Alberni Salmon Festival Society Bursary* $500This award is available to a Port Alberni student attending the Port Alberni campus and who is enrolled in biology studies. The recipient will have demonstrated an interest in working in the field of fisheries resources and/or a career in the biological sciences. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need and maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Pythian Order Academic Program Bursary 5 awards of $790Created by the Knights of Pythias #64 and the Pythian Sisters #7, these bursaries are available to North Island College continuing students attending the Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses who have completed at least one semester of university level studies. Preference may be given to a relative of the Pythians.

Ray Gailloux Memorial Bursary $410The Ray Gailloux Memorial Bursary has been established by family and friends as a tribute to a man who inspired learning in all of his students and was a patron of the arts. Ray was passionate about education over his thirty year career as an educator and was a great supporter of the Comox Valley Potters. This bursary will be awarded to a North Island College student entering the second year of the Fine Arts program at the Comox Valley campus.

Retired Teachers’ Association Bursary $1,295First preference for this award is a graduating second year Comox Valley campus student proceeding into a university teacher training program. It is to be awarded on the basis of financial need, citizenship and scholastic ability.

Robert Illman Memorial Welding Bursary $600The recipient of this award will be a North Island College student who is registered full-time in the Welding Program at the Port Alberni campus. The award will be granted to a student who has a demonstrated financial need and has maintained a satisfactory academic and practical achievement in the Welding program.

Royal Purple of Canada Lodge 158 Bursary $500This $500 bursary will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the BSc Nursing program at North Island College’s Comox Valley campus. The student must have demonstrated financial need and have maintained a satisfactory academic standing in their first year of study. Upon registration, in the second year of the Nursing program, the funds will be released as a credit to the student’s tuition.

ScotiaMcLeod Bursary $340This award is available to a continuing, full-time or part-time student attending North Island College’s Comox Valley campus, the Campbell River campus, the Mt. Waddington campus, or one of the College’s northern Centres. The recipient will be continuing their studies in the Business Administration program after having successfully completed at least one semester of study. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need and have maintained a satisfactory academic standing.

Soroptimist International Club of Courtenay Bursary 5 awards of $500

These awards are available to Comox Valley students who are continuing their studies at the Comox Valley campus in the following semester. Recipients must be enrolled with a minimum of a 60% course load and must have maintained a satisfactory academic standing. Students in academic, technical, and vocational programs, who have a demonstrated financial need, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to women. The bursary will be released and applied to the recipient’s tuition upon registration. Soroptomist International Club of Courtenay continues to support students at North Island College by sponsoring awards funded through affiliation with BC Lotteries.

Stephen Garnet Memorial Bursary $430This award is created in memory of Stephen Garnet who made a significant contribution to the life of the North Island College and particularly to the Human Services program where he taught from 1999 to 2004. The bursary is available to a graduate of the Human Service Worker Certificate program at North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need and have shown a commitment to community service. The award will alternate between the Port Alberni campus and the Comox Valley campus with some flexibility in the case of an exceptional student or special deliveries of the program in other communities.

Susan Diana Crossley Bursary $400This award, created in memory of Susan Diana Crossley and her love of children, is available to a full-time or part-time student who has completed the first year of the Early Childhood Care and Education Diploma program at the Comox Valley campus. Preference will be given to a student enrolling in the second year of the program, specializing in Special Needs or Under Three’s, and secondly, to someone who has contributed to the community through volunteer work. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need and have maintained a high academic standing.

Sysco Victoria Award $TBAEligibility: Culinary Arts Student Award recipient must have maintained satisfactory academic standing in the program. Preference will be given to students who have proven themselves in regards to attendance, attitude, professionalism and communication skills. Applicants must provide a letter to the Chef Instructors explaining their goals and aspirations in the Hospitality Industry. Letters must be received by April 15th.

Terry and Phyllis Ryan Humanities Bursary $1,490This award, established to provide incentive and support to students as they move through their post-secondary education, is available to a continuing full-time or part-time North Island College student. The recipient, a Comox Valley resident, must have completed at least one semester of study and be continuing their studies at the Comox Valley campus. The student must have a demonstrated financial need. The award will be applied to tuition upon registration.

The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy Bursary $500This entrance award is available to a student whose educational goal is pharmacy study.

University Women’s Club of Campbell River - Ann Elmore Haig-Brown Memorial Bursary $1,120

This award, created by the University Women’s Club of Campbell River in memory of Ann Elmore Haig-Brown, is available to a mature female student studying at North Island College, Campbell River campus. Students applying for this award must have completed at least 18 credits of first year university level courses achieving a ‘B-’ average or better and be working towards a Bachelor Degree in any discipline. The student must also have demonstrated financial need.

Vancouver Island Trails Information Society Bursary* $500Created through the generosity of the Vancouver Island Trails Information Society (VITIS), this College-wide bursary is available to a student who is entering or continuing at North Island College on a full or part-time basis. The recipient will be enrolled in courses related to environmental studies, conservation and outdoor tourism, including Coastal Adventure Tourism Certificate or Adventure Tourism Management Diploma programs. University Studies & Transfer students may be considered for this award but applicants must clearly demonstrate how their studies will lead to a career in the field of environmental sustainability, wildlife conservation/protection, physical recreation or an associated field. The recipient will have mantined a good academic standing and must have demonstrated financial need. The bursary will be applied to tuition and the successful applicant will also receive his/her choice of Hiking Trails books pulbished by VITIS, Volume 1, 2 or 3 (hikingtrailsbooks.com).

Viking Air Bursary $500This bursary is available to an NIC student who has successfully completed the Aircraft Structures program at North Island College. The recipient will be a student who has shown the most improvement during the course of the program and has demonstrated the highest work ethic.

Women for Women Bursary* $TBAThese entrance awards are available to female parents who reside in the Campbell River region and are enrolling or continuing their studies at the North Island College Campbell River campus. The recipients may be attending on a full or part-time basis, and must be willing to attend at least one Women for Women event to meet the organizers and/or event participants thereby furthering the Women for Women cause for future NIC recipients.

60% Course Load Typically three, three credit courses per semester; also considered full time studies at North Island College

Academic Program A program of study, usually involving theoretical knowledge and research, and usually leading to a diploma, associate degree or bachelor’s degree

Associate Degree in Arts Associate degree is the completion of 60 credits of study, which is approximately 20 courses. Students can complete the first two years of a Bachelor of Arts degree at North Island College by obtaining their Associate Degree in Arts

Associate Degree in Science Associate degree is the completion of 60 credits of study, which is approximately 20 courses. Students can complete the first two years of a Bachelor of Science degree at North Island College by obtaining their Associate Degree in Science

Associated Study Student registered in Communications, Journalism or associated study. In this context, associated study refers to a student taking courses with topics that are related to this field or that prepare the student for employment in that particular field

Career Program A program of study designed to equip a student with the skills and general educational background needed for employment in a specific field, (e.g. Early Childhood Care & Education, Health Care Assistant, Practical Nursing, Tourism)

Communications Study and/or employment relating to the principles of transmitting information and the methods by which it is delivered as in print or radio or television (e.g. English, Journalism, Creative Writing)

Continuing Student A continuing student has completed a term or semester of courses and is eligible to register in courses the following semester

Credit Program A credit is the value assigned to a course. For example, many NIC courses are valued at 3 credits. Credit programs require the completion of a certain number of credits/courses to graduate from the program

Entrance Refers to the status of a student who is attending courses at North Island College for the first time

Environmental Sciences North Island College offers an Associate of Science Degree / University Transfer Science (60 credits) which can be applied towards completing an Environmental Sciences degree and a career in the field. Jobs include: Environmental Protection, Conservation and Preservation of Natural Resources and Environmental Education, Communication and Research

Field of Computing Technology Study and or employment in the activity of designing, constructing and programming computers. Computer courses at NIC can be located under CPS - Info Tech & Computing Science and IMG - Interactive Media

Fine Arts The study and creation of visual works of art. Subjects range from photography and digital visual art to sculpture and ceramics. Students at NIC can take a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Fine Arts Diploma, Professional Photography Certificate, Interactive Media (Advanced Communication Design Diploma, Communication Design Diploma, Web Design Certificate, Web Design Diploma)

Full-Time Enrolment in at least a 60% course load for program of studies; typically three, three credit courses (nine credits per semester).

Graduating Student A graduating student is currently enrolled in a program and will graduate within the upcoming term

Industrial Training Program A program of study, that adheres to the Industrial Training Authority guidelines, that provides students with specific training for a select profession. Typically there are different levels a student must reach before receiving a final designation. For example, a Red Seal ticketed Electrician, must successfully complete 4 levels of study before achieving a Red Seal ticket in the electrical trade.

Mature Student 23 years or older in the calendar year at the time of registration

New A student who has never attended NIC previously; A student who has not attended NIC for 5 or more years; A student who has taken upgrading courses only (ABE level) and who has been admitted to a post secondary program at NIC. Does not include students beginning a ‘new’ post secondary program (e.g. transferring from Fine Arts to Science)

Nursing Program Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, Practical Nursing

Part-Time Enrolment in less than 60% course load for program of studies. Less than three, three credit courses (less than nine credits per semester).

Program A program is a defined plan of studies that may result in a certificate, diploma or degree.Registered student Has paid a tuition deposit and will be registered in program

Science Program Associate of Science Degree; Bachelor of Science Prep; Dental Hygiene Prep; Kinesiology Prep; Medical Prep; Pharmacy Prep; First Year Engineering

Social Sciences Social science uses the scientific method to explore aspects of human society and development, such as anthropology, criminology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, and women’s studies

Technical Program A program of study that directly develops a student’s expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology; Also referred to as a Vocational Program. (e.g. Drafting, Electronics)
