At a Glance...The Town of Canmore is pleased to provide quality programs and services for children and youth in our community. We offer a wide variety of camp options so every child will have an opportunity to participate in an activity that suits their interest and time table.

Bow Valley Parent Link l 0 - 6 yearsBow Valley Parent Link is gearing up for the 3rd annual Parent Link in the Park summer program. Six Wednesday mornings over July and August in Canmore, Banff and Exshaw you’ll find us outside sharing games, laughs, special guests and snacks.

Summer Drop in Schedule: In July and August Bow Valley Parent Link offers one drop-in in each community of Banff, Canmore and Exshaw. For families and children 0 - 6 years. Check out the Summer Schedule at www.canmore.ca/parentlink.

Kinder Camp l 5 - 6 yearsThis summer we’re excited to offer full day camps for children 5-6 years of age. Your little camper will have loads of fun playing games, creating works of art, keeping active and making new friends. Participants will enjoy swimming and gymnastics, along with field trips within walking distance of the Canmore Recreation Centre. Weekly registration or limited daily drop-in is available.

Big Fun l 7 - 11 yearsBig Fun is the Town of Canmore’s day camp program for children 7-11 years of age. This full day camp is a great way for kids to keep busy with crafts, games, sports, outdoor activities and more. Participants will enjoy swimming and gymnastics at the Canmore Recreation Centre, along with a weekly field trip to Calgary, Kananaskis Country, or Banff. Weekly registration or limited daily drop-in is available.

12+ yearsGo Big is designed for youth who are looking for opportunities to hang out with friends this summer. Single day trips and a one week Go Youth Bow Valley program include activities such as climbing, white water rafting, ropes course, zip lining, paint balling, go karting, modelling and more.

Specialty Camps l 6 - 15+ yearsThe Town of Canmore is pleased to partner with local businesses to offer specialty camps which focus on skill development. Camps include orienteering, disc golf, junior naturalist, creative arts, and movie making – just to name a few!

Aquatics l 3 - 15+ yearsThe Town of Canmore offers a range of aquatic programs from Sea Turtle to Whale for preschoolers aged 3 - 5 years and Red Cross Swim Kids Levels 1 - 10 for youth aged 6 - 12 years. Splash into our new specialty camps including Swim Patrol, Synchronized Swimming, Kid’s Fitness Swim and Junior Lifeguard Club. Be safe around the lakes and rivers this summer and have fun meeting new friends at the pool.

What to Expect Your First Day of Camp • Come early the first day. Remember, all new campers will want a smooth start and some personal attention to help them feel welcomed and safe.

• To ensure your child’s safety, please indicate on the sign in sheet whether or not your child requires a life jacket for pool activities. Campers will receive an orientation prior to entering the pool.

• Please send your child with a water bottle, clothing for changing weather conditions, appropriate footwear, swim suit and towel (on swim days), hat, sunscreen and a backpack. All items should be personally labeled.

• We do not encourage participants to bring personal items such as toys or electronics to camp. The Town of Canmore does not accept responsibility for articles brought to camp that are lost, stolen or damaged.

• Participants are required to bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks. Peanut butter, nuts and all foods containing nut by-products are not permitted at camp. Remember Wednesdays are pizza day for Kinder Camps (5 - 6 yrs) and Big Fun (7 - 11 yrs).

Pre and Post CareCare for your child is available before and after full day camps at the Canmore Recreation Centre. This is a service we provide free of charge and no pre-registration is required (8:30 - 9 a.m. and/or 5 - 5:30 p.m.).

Pick Up and Drop OffA legal guardian is responsible to sign participants in and out of camp each day. If someone else is picking up for you we need written instructions or we will not release your child. We also need written instructions if your child has your permission to sign in and out of camp on their own.

Please be respectful of pick up times. Our leaders have also had a full day and need to get home to rest up for the next day!

Field TripsWeekly field trips will be programmed for camps based out of the Canmore Recreation Centre. Participants will be transported by a school bus chartered through the Canadian Rockies School Division. Kinder Camp will explore attractions that are within walking distance of the Canmore Recreation Centre.

Community InclusionAre you the legal guardian of a child with a disability? We encourage children with disabilities and/or special needs to participate in our program. Please inform the Recreation and Leisure Program Coordinator (403.678.0808, ext. 333) of your child’s needs prior to registering to ensure a positive day camp experience.

Campership ProgramFinancial assistance is available to families thanks to the community support of the Rotary Club of Canmore, Soroptimist International Banff National Park, and the Town of Canmore. Application forms are available at the Canmore Recreation Centre, Family Community and Support Services in the Civic Centre, and on-line at www.canmore.ca.

Funding requests must be approved prior to registration. Registration for camps with Campership funding must be made in person at the Canmore Recreation Centre.

Canmore Recreation Centre

Junior Lifeguard Club l 10+ yearsLearn lifesaving skills and techniques to develop physical fitness and teamwork skills. Participants will take part in a mini lifeguard competition on the final day. This club will run throughout the summer on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

Swim Patrol: Rookie/Ranger/Star 8 - 14 years l Canmore Recreation Centre

This 3-level Swim Patrol program is for kids who are ready to go beyond swimming lessons. This ‘work hard/play hard’ approach develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on personal responsibility. Candidates earn recognition for success in three content modules: Water Proficiency, Recognition & Rescue, and First Aid.

Prerequisite: 8 years of age and appropriate swimming ability (Red Cross Swim Kids 7 and higher or equivalent). All participants are asked to bring their past progress card to the current instructor on the first day of lessons.

Rookie Patrol Develop individual fitness levels to meet a timed 100 m swim and 350 m workout. Water proficiency skills include: swims with clothes, ready position, foot first and head first surface dives. Demonstrating an ability to conduct a primary assessment and initiating EMS are included as first aid skills. Victim recognition and throwing assists are other key elements of the program. Prerequisite: Ability to swim.

Ranger PatrolEnhances capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200 m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in ABC first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues. Prerequisite: Ability to swim.

Star PatrolAn excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award, Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100m each; and complete 600m workouts and a 300m timed swim. Prerequisite: Ability to swim.

Zipline at Canada Olympic Park l 13 - 15 yearsGet big air as you soar from the top of Canada Olympic Park’s ski jump tower on North America’s fastest zipline. Your adventure includes instruction, and two ziplines (one of which is a trainer line at the base of the hill). Fee also includes supervision and transportation. You’ll need to pack your own lunch (and courage) for this trip.Participants must weigh between 70 and 250 lbs. Secure footwear is required. Youth Aquatics

Canmore Recreation Centre

Assistant Water Safety Instructor l 15+ yearsThis certification course is the pre-requisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course. Candidates will be introduced to the foundation of instructional skills by focusing on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching. After completing the classroom components, candidates will have to complete 8 hours of co-teaching, as well as individual self-study assignments before they can become certified. Prerequisite: Must be at least 15 years old.

Water Safety InstructorThis course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim Programs. Course content includes stroke development and drills/corrections, evaluation criteria and how to effectively lesson plan and teach. After successfully completing the classroom component, candidates will apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours of practice teaching experience before they can become certified. Prerequisite: Must have the Assistant Water Safety Instructor course.

Bronze Medallion l 13+ yearsBronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education – judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn both tows and carries, and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers learn to respond to increasingly complex situations involving conscious and unconscious victims. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion is the prerequisite for the Bronze Cross award. Prerequisite: Swimming ability and at least 13 years old.

Bronze CrossBronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. Lifesavers learn how to rescue a spinal-injured victim and a pulseless victim. Bronze Cross is the prerequisite award for all advanced training programs in lifesaving, lifeguarding and leadership. Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion.

Skateboard Jam l 6 - 12 years Canmore Recreation CentreOur skateboard camps provide a safe environment that encourages friendship, laughter, personal growth, and of course skateboarding! Lesson components will include foot positioning and balance, pushing, stopping, turning, beginner ramp riding, and board control. More experienced skaters will learn 180 ollies, flat bar rail slides, grinds, and flip tricks. Skateboarding etiquette, safety, and equipment maintenance will also be covered.

Each day will include 1.5 hours of lessons, followed by a swim at the Canmore Recreation Centre pool. Participants must provide their own skateboard and helmet. Wrist guards, knee and elbow pads are highly recommended. Please bring a water bottle, snack, and your swim gear.

Beginner Mountain Biking Camp l 8 - 15 yearsCanmore Nordic CentreJoin the qualified mountain biking instructors at Trail Sports for one of our most popular camps. This program will help kids improve their shifting, steering, braking, balance control and fitness. Become a confident off-road rider as you practice your newly acquired skills on the trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Participants must bring their own mountain bike, helmet, water bottle and nutritious snack.

All day camp leaders are graduates in the field of environmental science and have a passion for sharing the outdoors with young naturalists. They both possess wilderness first aid certification and have significant experience teaching in an outdoor setting.

If you have a budding naturalist in your house…this is the camp for them. Children will explore the natural spaces around Canmore and in Kananaskis Country. Through fun outdoor based daily field trips and activities, participants will use all their senses to discover the wonders of nature. They will learn from educators, researchers and guest speakers about wildlife, including: invertebrate sampling, amphibian studies, plant walks as well as having fun fishing, hiking and doing nature crafts – and that’s just the beginning! Sea TurtleJust starting out in un-parented swimming lessons. Encourages the child to move, float and swim independently.

Sea Otter Following Sea Turtle – using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills.

SalamanderThe child will experience personal water safety, rhythmic breathing, floats and glides.

SunfishThe child will develop basic swimming skills such as glides with kicks, side glides, and a distance swim of 5 metres. Sunfish will also build on the skills gained in Salamander.

Crocodile Unassisted glides and swims are practiced at this level; assisted dolphin kicks and deep-water support are introduced. Included is a distance swim of 10 metres.

WhaleThe child will be introduced to proper front crawl breathing techniques, and experience more deep-water activities. Throwing assists are introduced, along with a distance swim of 2x10 metres.

Level 1Level 1 is for children who are six or older and just beginning swimming lessons. Children will be introduced to floats, glides, kicks, and swims along with safety rules.

Level 2The participants in this program will be taught the proper use of PFDs, side glides, and basic deep-water activities. Also included is a distance swim of 10 metres.

Level 3The participant will be taught: beginning dive techniques, deep water surface support for 20 seconds, front crawl including arm movement, and a 15 metre distance swim.

Level 4This level features: use of EMS, kneeling dives, ways to keep you safe in the water, introduction to back crawl basics, front crawl including breathing to the side, and a distance swim of 25 metres.

Level 5This level includes: cold water and boating safety, an introduction to sculling, whip kick, and dolphin kick, front and back crawl, and a distance swim of 50 metres.

Level 6Participants will learn about ice safety and boating incidents. They will also increase their proficiency in front and back crawl, learn elementary backstroke, and complete a distance swim of 75 metres.

Level 7Covers: choking rescues, throwing and reaching assists, whip kick on your front, and a distance swim of 150 metres.

Level 8This level includes rescue breathing, feet first surface dives, stride entries, an introduction to breaststroke, and a distance swim of 300 metres.

Level 9Covers: head first surface dives, self-rescue from a fall through ice, boating regulations, increasing power in front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke, continued practice of breaststroke, and a distance swim of 400 metres.

Level 10Covers: surface dives with an underwater swim, sun safety, introduction to sidestroke, increased efficiency in front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, and breast stroke, and a distance swim of 500 metres.
