TYRRELL’S BELFORD CHARDONNAY 2009WINNER: Murray Tyrrell Chardonnay Trophy for

Best Chardonnay, Hunter Valley Wine Show 2010

The 2011 vintage returned to almost normal timing with spring starting two weeks earlier than last year and cool, wet conditions throughout late October, November and December. During November and December, we had a continuing battle against downy mildew and I am pleased to say that the Pokolbin vineyard came through unscathed. At Scone, however, we had early morning fogs in the vineyard next to the river and we got downy mildew in the infant bunches before it was seen on the leaves. This cost about a third of the crop at Scone. January stayed relatively fine and warm until right at the end when we had nearly two weeks of hot, dry weather. Initially, this served to burn any green flavours out of the fruit but the heat hung around and the first week of February we saw temperatures in the 40’s with no cloud cover. The semillon berries actually began to dehydrate, concentrating the flavour, sugar and acid.

As in all vintages, there is always one bad shift and we had that on the night of 31 January. It was the biggest crushing shift during vintage and we blew the hydraulic hose on the main forklift and door seals on two of our three presses.

The semillons are a bit like last year where they have quite full flavours, distinctive vineyard characters but good acid structures. They will be good drinking as young wines but certainly have the structure and chemistry to live in the bottle. We timed the picking of the verdelho about spot on. It is a variety that can jump in sugar quickly and if you are not careful, you end up with hot, alcoholic, broad white. We got John Tulloch’s old block pretty much spot on. The star of the vintage, however, is the chardonnay. The vines and fruit seem to be almost indestructible and no matter what the weather threw at them, the fruit just kept steadily ripening and gaining flavour. The juice in the resultant wine will be as good as the fruit. We have decided to leave the Vat 47 in wood a little longer than normal, and it will not be released until mid to late October.

In the Hunter, we were one of the few fortunate areas in Australia to miss out on the wet weather of February and March. McLaren Vale was the same and we made some great wine, particularly shiraz, out of there this year. Limestone Coast collapsed before the fruit got ripe and we didn’t pick a berry. We picked about a third of the Heathcote shiraz but it is too light to make Rufus Stone from 2011. This is a year that unless it is from the Hunter or McLaren Vale, I would make sure you taste the wine before you buy it.

The last week of July has been more than kind to us. James Halliday has released his 2012 Wine Companion and Tyrrell’s are again, a 5 Star Winery with Vat 1 Semillon 2005, Vat 9 Shiraz 2009 and Old Patch 2009 all scoring 97/100. This year is the best we have done in the Wine Companion. There were 10 Shiraz that received 97 points and half were from the Hunter.

We have just got the results from our first exhibition in the Cowra Wine Show, which has around 3,000 entries from across the country. We received eight gold medals from 24 entries and the 2005 HVD Semillon received the Trophy for the Best Single Vineyard Wine and our 2011 Old Winery Rosé won the Trophy for the Best Rosé. This wine is a blend of predominantly McLaren Vale grenache and some run off from this year’s Heathcote shiraz. Andrew Spinaze has wanted to make this wine for seven or eight years now and I would suspect we are going to have to keep making it.

I am only too happy to recommend the 2011 Private Bin Whites to you and I look forward to seeing as many as possible of you here at the winery or at our outside tastings.

WELL… WHAT A VINTAGE! ! !

It seems every year we, in the Hunter, have to compete with all sorts of weather conditions. This year proved no different with freakish weather from bud burst in mid August right through to the first week of December when the Hunter region was deluged with 288mm of rain.

Despite having nearly 111/2 inches of rain during this period, and battling diseases such as downy mildew and early botrytis, spraying the vineyard every seven days to protect the vines and crop meant the vineyard team were still quietly confident of getting through the season with minimal losses and high expectations of excellent fruit quality and tonnages.

Heavy rain can be a bad thing at this time of year but it also can have its positive effects and, for Tyrrell’s, this was fruit forming beautifully; with big full bunches and large berries containing lots of juice. The vine shoots and leaves looked lush and healthy and although quite a large deal of trimming had to be completed from late December to early January, the vines were in perfect balance. So, from a Vineyard Managers point of view, this meant they could carry a much larger crop load than was first predicted.

By New Year the Hunter was quite warm and the locals were talking of the 2011 vintage possibly ending during one of the driest summer periods on record. This heat wave, which the Hunter was so looking forward to three months earlier, did have some affect on the white varieties with the semillon suffering some dehydration and sunburning leaving the bunches quite baggy and shrivelled but still full

of flavour. The chardonnay was the highlight of the 2011 vintage with the fruit remaining full (almost undamaged from sunburn) with fantastic flavours. Both varieties were relatively disease free.

With the vintage kicking off on the 25 January, the whites were all in by 9 February and looking pretty smart.

The efforts of the vineyard staff throughout the season, including all the external staff that assisted during vintage, could not be faulted. Well done to the Pokolbin vineyard team.

So, what potentially looked like a disaster at the start and part-way into the growing season turned out to be one of the best white vintages that I have seen in the past five years.

Superb balance of fruit and oak on the nose and palate. Long, fresh flavours and lively, acid finish.

Quite distinctive oak and fruit on the nose. The honey characters of Belford show through on a rich palate with vibrant, acid finish. Will be hard to keep as it is drinking so well now.

Good length with a soft, approachable acid structure

The Stevens Semillon was harvested from the Glenoak vineyard owned by Neil Stevens, which is situated on a combination of light sand and red clay soils.

The first of the Single Vineyard semillon to be picked. The nose shows fresh citrus and floral characters associated with this vineyard. The palate is dominated by lime characters with a mineral edge. Showing good length with a soft, approachable acid structure.

Drinking beautifully to 2021+

A very approachable young Hunter semillon

The grapes for this wine come from the Belford vineyard owned by the Elliott family, situated 15kms north/north-west of the Tyrrell’s winery. Planted in 1933, the vines are dry grown and planted on their own roots.

Limes, sweet fruit and some spice

A late spring, which led into cooler conditions throughout November and early December with some rain. This lead up left us with above average crop levels, which ripened well with the warmer weather in January.

The best of the verdelho. This is sourced from John Tulloch’s original block. An early drinking style; the wine has intense varietal characteristics with aromas of limes, sweet fruit and some spice. On the palate, fruit sweetness is well balanced by a crisp acid finish.

Hand pressed, with great fruit weight and acid. Only 250 dozen made!

Hand picked on the 3 February and then immediately hand pressed in our original basket press. Three days cold settling before racking to a fermentation tank. Some solids in ferment due to the fact there was no enzyme used in the juice clarification process. This aims to build more texture into the wine.

The resulting wine is one of great fruit weight and acid drive, with the added softness and textural elements from the juice handling, whilst still retaining a clean, fresh acid structure, which lengthens the palate.

A perfectly balanced classic blend. Only 260 dozen made!

This year’s Vat 63 is a blend of 60% chardonnay and 40% semillon. The chardonnay was sourced from HVD and the semillon is from a mixture of our Short Flat and the Stevens’ vineyard. Both batches were made separately before blending and bottling in July.

The wine is pale yellow in colour with sweet chardonnay fruit and quality French oak on the nose. The palate has the combination of the strength of chardonnay fruit and the finesse and freshness of semillon, producing a perfectly balanced expression of this classic blend.

Grapes for this wine are sourced from the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard, situated between two dry creek beds. The grapes were taken from the young block with cuttings from the old vines planted in 1908 and basket pressed.

Classic Hunter Valley chardonnay, the wine is balanced between primary chardonnay fruit flavours and secondary flavours derived from the minimal solids ferment and extended yeast lees contact resulting in this wine’s texture and mouth feel.

This year’s Vat 47 comes entirely from chardonnay grapes grown on our Short Flat vineyard.

A great vintage for chardonnay. The grapes handled the heat wave better than all other varieties. 25% were basket pressed. All of the signs are showing the early potential to be a strong Vat 47. Good fruit weight and oak integration with a bright, fresh acidity, with some secondary characters coming from the slight solids ferment, which gives the wine an added dimension of texture.

The Tyrrell’s Belford Chardonnay has won this trophy the last three consecutive years.

Hand pressed with no malolactic fermentation, Belford is a rich chardonnay, with almost a French style ‘flintiness’ adding complexity to the wine.

From a great chardonnay vintage, this wine shows a complex nose of sweet chardonnay fruit and a hint of high quality French oak. The palate has amazing length of flavour and a wonderful texture. A crisp acid backbone brings the wine together. An excellent example of classic Hunter chardonnay.

It is with mixed emotions that I approach retirement after serving Tyrrell’s Wines for the past 33 years. Beginning as a casual employee in 1978, I moved through various roles to succeed Nellie Beckett as Cellar Door Manager in the 1980’s. I have continued in that role to the present.

I was fortunate to have worked for a wonderful mentor in Murray Tyrrell for much of that time. Mr. Tyrrell was a “man’s man” and a hard taskmaster while being generous, encouraging and forward looking in the operation of this famous family business. Bruce Tyrrell continues the tradition and the future of Tyrrell’s is strong with excellent staff, marvelous products and loyal, discerning clients.

It has been an interesting ride along the road; from the flagons of fortified muscat, sherry and port in 1978, through to the development of sparkling moselle, pink phantom and traminer riesling, to the current range.

Today, the Vat 1 Semillon, Vat 47 Chardonnay, Vat 6 Pinot Noir and Vat 9 Shiraz reflect the quality, subtlety and style that today’s informed wine drinkers demand. Tyrrell’s was at the forefront of this development and continues to lead and develop the palates of consumers. I hope that I will be allowed to take a bottle or two when I go!

I look forward to having time to travel and enjoy leisurely pursuits, but know that I will miss the contact with the staff and customers of Tyrrell’s. Many regular customers have become lifelong friends and I hope to stay in contact.

My work colleagues, Murray Flannigan and Andrew Goldman, and I, share 100 years of service with Tyrrell’s. I choose to think (rightly) that we all stayed so long due to the opportunity to work with such great products and people, rather than that we were too tired to move!

My successor as Cellar Door Manager, Andrew Goldman, began at Tyrrell’s when he was 15 years old. He is an impressive person and I know that he will make a great success of his occupation of the role.

ABOUT THE PRIVATE BIN WINE CLUB

The Private Bin Wine Club was formed in 1961 by the late Murray Tyrrell to provide members with exclusive small production wines from our premium Hunter Valley vineyards.

Today, our Private Bin range of wines remains true to Murray’s vision; producing only small quantities from six single vineyards when vintage allows. These single vineyards are over 100 years old and are home to some of the rarest vines in the world.

Membership of the Tyrrell’s Private Bin Wine Club requires a commitment of receiving a minimum of one dozen bottles of Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection or Single Vineyard wines per year. The wines are preselected by the member and are held in reserve as a ‘standing order’ until release.

Red wines are released in May, and white wines are released in September.
