    Kirby Hoythonorable mention

Kirby Hoyt, founder of EDGE Industries, holds a Master of Design Studies from Harvard UniversitysGraduate School of Design and a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture degree from Iowa StateUniversity. His firm, EDGE Industries, was created as a response to banal corporate design with theprimary focus on landscape urbanism, public art and urban design. His design philosophy valuescontext of place and he has the ability to find beauty in prosaic, common and forgotten realms.

Kirby enjoys working on the liminal edge of philosophical design; where the subconscious mind meetsthe reality of daily life. His art strives to provoke subtle anxiety and engage the imagination. He travelsoften to countries around the world to broaden his knowledge of art, culture and design, thus enablinghim to conceive deeper meaning in his work and life.

We are four students at the Vrije Universiteitof Brussels. We are currently finishing ourmasters degree in Architectural Engineering, each in our own specialization. This study offerstheoretical engineering courses on the one hand and practical design courses on the other.

Because of this combination, we were always taught to think from a problem-solving point ofview.

Thanks to the open format of this competition, we had the opportunity to think out of that box. This openness is something we tried to integrate in our submission: a picture with a clearatmosphere that has multiple layers allowing a variety of interpretations.

Using wallpaper designs of William Morris to explore the relationship between the patterns in

landscape and the urban fabric of Florence, this scheme proposes a manifesto for the manage

Brownfield land in the city. It sees the use of CAD, CNC milling and laser cutting in the act o

floral patterns present in the designs, bringing a third dimension to the wallpaper.

United Kingdom is a densely populated island

and available land to build on is scarce.

    Where do we build next?

The aquatic resurrection sees recycled oil rigs

brought into the Wear Estuary from the NorthSea, providing the beginnings of sea-worthy

uctures, powered purely from renewable energy

ources. I nitiall y, existing lodging on the rigs willprovide office space as the project is developed

on self-suff icient l ines. Eventually when the

uation gets out of hand, the oil rigs will provide

emergency accommodation, using scavengedmaterials to expand the village further. If this

social experiment is deemed successful, a new

    architectural landscape may be foreseeable.

Arquipelago: Gregory Marinic, Carlos Contreras and Jaime Garciawinning entry

    'Baltimore Calling'Arquipelago, New York

Arquipelago is a contemporary and progressive architectural practice developing projects inarchitecture, interiors, urban design and identity. Believing that buildings and spatialexperiences are embedded with information, the practice seeks new directions that investigatesustainable solutions informed by site-specificity, materials innovation, and regionalism. Withoffices in New York and Houston, the practice operates through design, research, teachingand speculation.

Maintaining a careful balance between art and architecture, Arquipelago crafts environments

that actively blend buildings, interior, and landscapes. The practice curiously engages withcontext through a 21st century lens, merging rational and technological order with notions ofthe ephemeral. Timelessness and weathering are equally considered in the design of totalenvironments adapted to context, culture and climate.

Arquipelago is a networked practice led by principal Gregory Marinic. Gregory serves asDirector of Interior Architecture and Assistant Professor in the Gerald D. Hines College ofArchitecture at the University of Houston. He previously taught at Pratt Institute, CityUniversity of New York, and UDEM.
