Making the Future BrighterA message from the Archbishop

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the students—and graduates—of Cardinal Ritter College Prep, I want to thank you for making a profound difference in their lives. Without your support, a challenging college preparatory education would be out of reach for the majority of these talented young men and women.

In 1979, leaders in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the business and civic community had a vision for urban education: a college prep high school for students in the City of St. Louis. Now—after 30 years—we can reflect on the many fruits of this hard work and dedication.

Cardinal Ritter College Prep graduates are achieving, succeeding and making a difference in the St. Louis area. The current student body is thriving in an attitude of excellence and self worth. The core values are inspiring them to become tomorrow’s physicians, teachers, artists, activists, business and community leaders.

This success would not be possible without partnerships. At the highest level, Cardinal Ritter College Prep counts on the support of area civic leaders, corporations, regional cultural organizations and community groups. We also turn to our individual benefactors and friends to give our students the tools they need to succeed in college—and beyond.

While we have accomplished much over the past 30 years, there is still much more to do. Help us ensure that there is opportunity for every student seeking a challenging high school curriculum, leadership development and a college education.

Thank you for your investment in their future. It’s a proven investment that is already paying many dividends. Let us pray that these valuable partnerships continue to make a difference in the lives of our children for many years to come.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson

“Cardinal Ritter has helped me reach my goals on

many different levels. From “real world” experiences

within classes, to fostering my leadership skills, to

the great relationships I was able to build through

the four years of high school. If I hadn’t attended

Cardinal Ritter, I might not be at the school that I

now call home—Duke University.”

“We had to learn and live the mission of academic

excellence, faith development and leadership.

Our teachers didn’t just talk about it—they gave

us the tools to develop all three areas in our own

lives. Cardinal Ritter equipped me to succeed as a

student at Northwestern University. They also gave

me a sense of how to be a great family member.”

Intern Leadership ProgramPreparing students for the business world

For ten years, the Cardinal Ritter College Prep Intern Leadership Program has provided incentives for talented African-American youth to live, work, and become leaders in the St. Louis community. Funded by a generous grant from the Danforth Foundation, participants learn valuable job skills and explore career opportunities through summer internships at St. Louis-area companies.

ILP director April Cotton (‘87) provides career training to students enrolled in the program. Students participate during their junior and senior years in high school and all through college. Forty companies have partnered with the ILP and the program has mentored more than 200 students throughout the past ten years.

“Ameren has been a partner in the Intern Leadership Program since 2002. We did not have a good idea of what to expect our first year in the program. That changed once we met and worked with the students. Our Cardinal Ritter interns have been poised, intelligent, confident and hardworking. We are committed to our interns and their success because they possess all of the talents and skills it takes to be great Ameren employees. Every Cardinal Ritter intern has exceeded our expectations even as our expectations continue to grow with each year’s success. The Cardinal Ritter Intern Leadership Program is developing tremendous future business leaders. We are proud to be a part of the program. “

“The Intern Leadership taught me so much

‘beyond the books.’ The mock interviews, tests,

and weekly meetings provided valuable tools

for success. When I graduated from college, my

internship experience made my resume stand

out—and I was well prepared for interviews. It

was a great opportunity that helped me through

college and now in my career.”
