DrivingDriving in the Dales isextremely popular and veryaccessible by car as the area isbordered by the A1/M to the East,the A66 in the North and the M6 tothe West. The A65, A59, A629 andM62 and M65 connect the South.But remember that if you areunfamiliar with the roads it ismore relaxing, enjoyable andenvironmentally friendly to usepublic transport.

If you do decide to drive, rememberthe roads are bendy with high, drystoned walls often makingvisibility poor. Around any corner,there may be a tractor, walkers,livestock, cyclists or even a deerrunning across the road – so takeyour time, drive slowly and planahead allowing plenty of time foryour day out.

National Rail services in the mainYorkshire Dales area are the Leeds-Morecambe line and the famousLeeds-Settle-Carlisle line, whichhas a service running several timesdaily operated by Northern Rail,plus a Summer Sunday Dalesrailservice from Lancashire.

Wensleydale RailwayThe railway line from Leeming Barto Bedale, Finghall, Leyburn andRedmire (on the edge of theYorkshire Dales National Park) hasbeen re-opened by WensleydaleRailway Plc: 08454 50 54 74. The 17 mile trip takes

approximately 50 minutes. Trainsare normally formed of heritagediesel rail cars from the 1960s.Connections with the mainlinerail network are available via thelocal Monday to Saturday busservice from Northallerton toLeeming Bar.

Home to the Keighley and WorthValley Steam Railway, Haworthoffers the visitor a complete

Eat, drink and be merry!

Cumbria offers the best infood and drink, with manygoods being locally

produced and holding deep rootsin Lake District history.

The Cumberland Coil

Cumberland Sausages consist ofrough cut pork, spices, herbs andpepper and are known for theirdistinctive shape. The coil ofsausage is sold by weight orlength. One possibility for itsshape is that it was introducedduring the Elizabethan Reign byGerman miners working in theLake District who wanted areminder of the thick meatysausages they were used to eatingin Germany.

Westmorland Damsons

While Damsons originally camefrom the area around Damascus,the small, bluey-purple fruits havebeen grown in Westmorland sincethe early 1700s. AlthoughWestmorland no longer exists, TheWestmorland Damson is a tastytribute to the historic county, whichis now part of the much largercounty of Cumbria. The fruit is amember of the plum family and itsunique flavour is said to be a result

of cross pollination with wild sloesand also the favourable Cumbrianclimate. The fruit is harvested inSeptember and used to flavourwines, gin, pies, cheeses, chocolate,bread, jams and beer.

Try Gingerbread in Grasmere...

Created by Sarah Nelson in 1854,this secret recipe results in aunique product – a cross betweena cake and a biscuit and nothinglike crisp gingerbread used forgingerbread shapes. You can buy itfrom the Grasmere GingerbreadShop in Grasmere village, next tothe church.

...or Mint Cake in Kendal

This famous little peppermintflavoured slice has been giving anenergy boost to walkers andclimbers in the Lake District formany years. In 1953, it even madeit to the top of the world on thefirst ever successful Everestexpedition.

Herdwick lamb

Due to the harsh Lake Districtclimate on the higher fells,Herdwick lambs grow slowly. Thismakes the meat sweeter and fullerin flavour.

The Toffee Shop, Penrith

The Toffee Shop in Penrith,Cumbria on the edge of the LakeDistrict, has been making fudgeand toffee since 1910. Highlyacclaimed, this little store inPenrith is known to have regularroyal visitors. Scafell Pike at 978 metres(3210 feet), Helvellyn at950 metres (3114 feet) andSkiddaw at 931 metres(3053 feet) are the threehighest mountains in theLake District.

The miniscule St Olaf'schurch, situated on the banksof Wastwater at the head ofthe Wasdale Valley, is thesmallest church in England. It was first mentioned in 1550- 461 years ago! Its woodenroof beam is said to havebeen made from a Vikinglongboat.
