How much are my tuition fees? The 2010/11 tuition fee rates are setout on pg 7. Fees quoted depend on

your tuition fee status, i.e. whether youare a UK/EU student or an internationalstudent (see pg 3 for further details andcriteria). The fees will also varyaccording to your course and whether

you are studying full-time or part-time.

Do I have to pay my fees beforeI start my course? It is your responsibility to ensure thatthe necessary funds are in place. Failureto do so may affect your progression. Please see pg 4 of this book for fullinformation on how to pay your fees. The amount you will have to pay willvary on your tuition fee status (see pg 3for further details and criteria).

Full-time undergraduate UKstudentsYou will not have to pay any feesupfront if you can prove that you haveapplied for a Tuition Fee Loan, which is aloan that you don't start paying backuntil you have left university.

Undergraduate students who have yetto apply for help with their tuition feesand living costs should visit theDirectgov Student Finance website:www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

    Moneymanagement

    1. BudgetingBudgeting is challenging for students asyou have irregular income from yourstudent funding package and, in manycases irregular expenditure i.e on books, accommodation fees, travel costs etc. Ourbudget planner and financial forecasterwill help you plan your income andspending and show any potential

shortfalls in funds. To access thisinformation visitwww.londonmet.ac.uk/advice andfollow the link to money managementand debt advice.

    2. Boost your incomeBesides making sure you are getting theentire student funding package to whichyou may be entitled, think about ways toincrease your income e.g.

Part-time work but remember tobalance with enough time for study.

Claim all the benefits and tax creditsto which you are entitled.

Students with children, or singlestudents aged over 25, may be entitledto claim working tax credit if you workpart-time.

Claim your discounts get a studentOyster card for 30% off travel onTransport for London and think aboutgetting an NUS Extra card. If you are afull-time student, make sure you give

your local authority a letter ofexemption from paying council tax, available from your Undergraduate/Postgraduate Office.

The University has funds to assiststudents in hardship, as well as detailsof charitable funding which may alsobe available. Factsheets are availableon our website (see our above link).

    3. Limit your expenditureStart by seeing where you are spendingyour money and list the things that areessential. Your University fees, rent andfuel are priorities because non-paymentmay have serious consequences. Itsimportant to be realistic about how muchyou spend on food, travel and going out.See if you can save money on non-essential spending.

Do not rush straight out and buy lots ofbooks and programme materials wait toget a feel of what you really need, what isavailable in the library and what can bebought second hand. Searching forcheaper mobile phone deals and buyingbudget brands at the supermarket are justtwo ways of saving money. The websitehttp://moneysavingexpert.com hasmore tips for students on saving moneyand budgeting.

    4. TroubleshootingMost students will graduate fromuniversity owing a large amount to theStudent Loan Company. Try to avoidbuilding up further debts and beparticularly wary of credit and store cardsas the interest charged can quickly leadto high bills.

If you are struggling to pay your bills, you

should visit one of the Universitysspecialist debt advisors based in theStudent Services department. For anappointment, telephoneCity: 020 7320 2370,North: 020 7133 2094or email [email protected]

You will not normally be allowed toenrol if you are in the UK on a tourist orvisitor visa. We will need to see your visaat enrolment as we will need to establishthat it is valid for the duration of theacademic year, and has been issued onthe basis of you studying at London

    EQUIVALENT OR LOWER QUALIFICATIONS (ELQs)

In 2008 the Government announced that it would no longer provide funding to support universities teaching studentsstudying for a qualification that is equivalent to, or lower than, a qualification that they already hold. This is commonlyknown as ELQ policy. As an example of this policy, if you currently hold a bachelors degree and want to study for anotherbachelors degree, you will be affected by this policy. There are some exemptions from this policy and these are, broadly, asfollows:

those studying undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, social work, nursing and midwifery

those taking courses that lead to qualified teacher statusthose studying for a foundation degree

those students in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

In such circumstances of reduced government funding, London Metropolitan University, along with other institutions, hasbeen left with little choice but to raise the tuition fees for those students who do fall under this policy. For more informationon ELQ please contact the Admissions Office.

  • 8/9/2019 2010_11 Tuition Fee Schedule

    15/16

Tuition fee policyAs part of its commitment to responsible recruitment the University offers the following guidance on policy governing the payment of tuition fees. This policy

is designed to be fair and equitable to students and to support the Universitys attempts to hold tuition fee rises to a minimum at a time of

    economic stringency in Higher Education.

    1. Tuition fees must either be paid in full at enrolment or paid under an approved instalment plan. If any payment agreed under an approved instalment plan is

not made by the due date, an additional late charge of 100 may be imposed.

    2. An early payment discount on the full tuition fee will be given to self-financing students as outlined on pg 17.

    3. The University accepts all major debit and credit cards, except American Express, and direct debit in settling tuition fee accounts.

    4. Refunds of tuition fees are at the discretion of the University and will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. All such refunds can only be

authorised by the Director of Academic Administration, or nominee. Refunds granted in exceptional circumstances will normally be calculated on a termly

basis. Thus, for example, a student who withdraws in exceptional circumstances at any time during the first term would normally receive a refund of tuition

fees for the second and third terms only. For part-time students on modular courses a refund of the module fee may be granted where there is clear

evidence that the module was not started. A standard administration charge (100) will apply to all refunds. In addition further charges will be appliedwhere the University has incurred additional recruitment costs, either through its agents or overseas offices. This amount will be deducted from any refund

    that might be agreed.

    5. Students who register for a course and then subsequently withdraw without having paid tuition fees will remain liable for the full fees for the course unless

the withdrawal has been occasioned by exceptional circumstances. In such cases the Director of Academic Administration, or nominee, has authority to

waive a part of the fee. Fee waivers will normally be calculated on a termly basis. Thus, for example, a student who withdraws in exceptional circumstances

at any time during the first term would normally be allowed a waiver of tuition fees for the second and third terms only. For part-time students on modular

courses a waiver of the module fee may be granted where there is clear evidence that the module was not started.

    6. If a student chooses to defer entry, having already paid tuition fees, the University will normally retain the tuition fees and set these against the academic

year/semester when the student does commence his/her studies at the University. This will also apply in circumstances where a student elects to change

    course at the University.

    7. The Universitys Student Services Department urges intending students to plan their finances well in advance. Students are very welcome to consult the

Departments comprehensive advice on financial management should they experience difficulty whilst studying at the University.

    8. Fees will not normally be refundable where a student has deliberately given false information or omitted relevant information and as a result is subsequently

required to leave the course or where a student has enrolled on a course but subsequently does not pass the Criminal Records Bureau check.

    Additional notes for International Students

    1. In some countries, the British Embassy or High Commission will only issue a student visa if the student has paid some of their tuition fees to the

University. Usually your University receipt is sufficient evidence. If you require a letter, contact the Finance Office (see key contacts

section for details of the International Finance Officer)

    2. Students, when they enrol, incur formal responsibility for the full payment of relevant tuition fees. For those students taking one

or more English language courses in advance of an academic course, this includes responsibility for both the English

language course(s) and the academic course.

    3. The University will notify the UK Home Office Immigration Service when a student withdraws or leaves

    his/her course.
