In fact, its in- stincts are so far to the left, that an ac- curate expression of its red shift values would require complex mathematics. Fortunately, and as Eric Owens pointed out in his November 2000 article for  American Renaissance, “The New Na- tionalist Music,” not all modern popular music comes from the left of Trotsky. Mr. Owens’ article provided a useful overview of the various nationalist mu- sic scenes that emerged since the 1970s, each offering an alternative subculture for young generations disillusioned by the mainstream. Much has happened since 2000, however, and at least some of the music scenes surveyed by Mr. Owens have seen considerable growth and gone on to spawn new scenes. It is worth re-visiting Mr. Owens’ topic, and shedding some light on what has driven the growth of nationalistic music during the past decade. Although Mr. Owens discussed several genres (Oi!, Apocalyptic Folk,  Nationale révolutionaire , and Black Metal), I will focus only on Black Metal. This is my area of expertise and, most have achieved commercial success and even collected industry awards. Commercial success poses a number of interesting questions regarding Black Metal’s potential gradually to legitimize its more radically anti-system ideals, despite efforts to censor it from without or white-wash it from within. Before we examine Black Metal, we - toric events in and outside of the scene from a racial point of view. To my mind, they are the fall of Communism in East- ern Europe and its rise in the West, the appearance of more explicitly political or nationalist offshoots of Black Metal, and the increasing visibility and accep- tance within the mainstream of bands with links to Black Metal. MTV cannot be counted amongthe champions of Europeancivilization. In fact, its in-

stincts are so far to the left, that an ac-

curate expression of its red shift valueswould require complex mathematics.Fortunately, and as Eric Owens pointedout in his November 2000 article for American Renaissance, “The New Na-tionalist Music,” not all modern popularmusic comes from the left of Trotsky.Mr. Owens’ article provided a usefuloverview of the various nationalist mu-sic scenes that emerged since the 1970s,each offering an alternative subculturefor young generations disillusioned bythe mainstream.

Much has happened since 2000,

however, and at least some of the musicscenes surveyed by Mr. Owens haveseen considerable growth and gone on tospawn new scenes. It is worth re-visitingMr. Owens’ topic, and shedding somelight on what has driven the growthof nationalistic music during the pastdecade.

Although Mr. Owens discussedseveral genres (Oi!, Apocalyptic Folk,  Nationale révolutionaire, and BlackMetal), I will focus only on Black Metal.This is my area of expertise and, most

have achieved commercial successand even collected industry awards.Commercial success poses a number of interesting questions regarding BlackMetal’s potential gradually to legitimizeits more radically anti-system ideals,despite efforts to censor it from withoutor white-wash it from within.

Before we examine Black Metal, we-toric events in and outside of the scenefrom a racial point of view. To my mind,

they are the fall of Communism in East-ern Europe and its rise in the West, theappearance of more explicitly politicalor nationalist offshoots of Black Metal,and the increasing visibility and accep-

tance within the mainstream of bandswith links to Black Metal.

Origins and Offshoots

Black Metal originated as an offshootof Heavy Metal, and is so called because

of the occult and satanic imagery andAlthough it retained the basic elementsof guitars, bass, drums, and vocals,from its beginnings, its sound was moreextreme, its lyrics more esoteric, and its

tone more serious. Black Metal artists-scure for us to speak of a scene proper,and its fans were part of a wider HeavyMetal/Thrash Metal subculture.

It was not until the early- to mid-1990s, with the rise of a radical circle of Black Metal musicians in Scandinavia,especially in Norway, that Black Metaldeveloped into a full-blown scene. Itwould probably have remained obscure

pocrates” of your resurrected GaltonReport in the May issue did not ana-

lyze Prof. Lynn’s Italian study morecritically. First, Prof. Lynn’s geographicdivisions are questionable. Tuscany,which is widely considered to be the areathat has produced the largest number of Italian geniuses, is more properly con-sidered central than northern Italy. Next,in his study, Prof. Lynn used academictest scores of 15-year-olds as a proxy forIQ scores, and the two types of test arenot exactly comparable.

Further, even if his data were reliable,Prof. Lynn’s conclusions are doubtful.

percent of Italian immigrants duringthe turn-of-the-century “great wave”originated from southern Italy. How-ever, multiple indices of educational/ professional attainment show that Ital-ian-Americans compare well with otherwhite Americans. “Selective migration”is unlikely to explain this completely orat all, since early measurements of Ital-ian migrant IQs were also low, roughlycomparable to Prof. Lynn’s modernestimates.

Prof. Lynn asserts that southern ItalianIQs are only slightly higher than those

of American blacks, and yet southernItalians in America routinely performat a level comparable to other whites.Admixture with other white Americanscannot explain this high achievementeither, as the low IQ estimates of Prof.Lynn should result in a relative depres-sion of IQ scores of part-Italian hybrids,who would still be expected to performless well than other white Americans. Inote as well that southern Italy/Sicilywere Greek colonies during that nation’s

major contributions to the Classical Cul-ture, and that genetic contribution to thepopulation cannot be ignored.

In addition, Prof. Lynn’s commentson the “admixture” of North African

genes in southern Italians are based onoutdated studies. For example, moresuggest that Tuscans from northern Italyare likely to be genetically closer toMiddle Easterners than Sardinians are.

Data published on the plosone.orgwebsite by a team led by David LópezHerráez has found that the total of “non-European genetic structure” inSardinians is not higher than in Tuscansor in north Italians from Bergamo. Otherdata, published at racialreality.110mb.

com, suggests that the high-achievingTuscans seem particularly enrichedin “Middle/Near Eastern” ancestry,although most of that is probably of ancient rather than of modern origins.There is no current evidence thatsouthern Italians have a high degree of “Middle Eastern/north African” ances-levels Prof. Lynn claims.

It is true that compared to southeast-ern Europeans and southern Italians,peoples of northern and central Europeare more derived from Paleolithic peo-

ples, who emerged from the Near Easttens of thousands of years earlier thanthe Neolithic peoples. Southern Euro-pean ancestry is enriched with a greaterNeolithic contribution of ancient, butmore recent, Near Eastern origin. Prof.Lynn could argue that the longer sojournin the harsher European climate mayhave increased Paleolithic European IQmore than their Neolithic counterparts.However, even southern Europeans arepart Paleolithic, and it is unlikely that

the resulting IQ differences are as greatas Prof. Lynn’s estimates.

More to the point, when Prof. Lynnrefers to Near Eastern/north Africanadmixture in southern Italians, he isconfusing this Neolithic ancestry—agriculturalists who emerged from theNear East thousands of years before thestart of recorded history to introducefarming to Europe—with such modern,historical Near Eastern/north Africanpeoples as Phoenicians or Arabs, whoappeared thousands of years after theNeolithic peoples but still shared certainancient gene markers.

Dr. Lynn has made many vital con-tributions in the area of IQ research. Hisstudies of the global distribution of IQand, with Tatu Vanhanen, the correla-tion between IQ and national wealth,are masterworks. However, the differ-ences in IQ he has found in different

peoples—Africans, for example—arethe American context. If there is no suchcorrespondence in the case of “whiteethnics,” his data and conclusions mayrequire a second look. Italian-Americanachievement in the US coupled withrecent population genetics studies thatthrow light on questions of admixturesuggest that Prof. Lynn’s hypothesis isnot correct, and that he has not answeredthe questione meridionale.

Sir — As an Italian-American of southern Italian and Sicilian ancestry, Iwas disturbed by the photographs youchose for your article about RichardLynn’s study of Italian IQs. I have manyphotographs taken by family memberson their numerous trips to Sicily andsouthern Italy. The landscape and townslook nothing like the slum photo youchose to represent Sicily!

What you did was disingenuous,akin to traveling to Philadelphia andonly photographing the crime-ridden,

burned-out black ghettoes of NorthPhiladelphia, while ignoring the opu-lent, up-scale white neighborhoods of the far Northwest part of the city.

I certainly hope AR is not prejudicedagainst southern Europeans, especiallySicilians and southern Italians. What-ever some “Nordicists” may think, weare white people, too, often with a loy-alty to our people and race not usuallyfound in Europeans.

and would not have grown as rapidly as

achieved by a small number of BlackMetal artists, who, between 1992 and1993, chose a scandalous route tonotoriety: church arson. This was obvi-ously calculated to shock and terrorize,and in the resulting wave of publicitythe perpetrators explained their actswithin the framework of a neo-pagan,anti-Christian ideology. This not only

politicized their crimes, but showedthem to be a rejection by proxy of theegalitarian, liberal, universalist valuesof modern society that the perpetratorsassociated with Christianity.

Only a few musicians were involved,and all but one received short sentences,so this did not drastically affect thescene: it only delayed a few albumsby a year or two. But it did mark the

outer boundaries of the political think-ing of some Black Metal artists. In likemanner, some showed an interest—

lasting—in what they considered thediametric opposite of the current age:National Socialism.

Black Metal artists of the 1990s in-herited the link between their music andnationalist ideology—of which NationalSocialism is the most notorious byprod-uct—from the later albums of one of Bathory. Founded by Tomas Forsberg inused obvious satanic imagery andlyrics. In the subsequent three al-

bums, however, Forsberg, who diedsophisticated musical and lyrical ap-proach, inspired by classical musicand Romantic art, and drawing onScandinavian mythology.

At the same time, Mr. Fosberg de-veloped a neo-völkisch, Nietzscheanideology that rejected Christianity asa foreign, destructive cultural force,and called for a return to Europeanpagan roots. (The German wordvölkisch blends notions of race andpeople with a romantic conception of 

folklore and the organic; it has no exactequivalent in English.) A Celtic cross, or Hammerheart , and the next, Twilight of the Gods, was partly inspired byNietzschean critiques of modernity andrejection of Christianity. Mr. Forsbergonce noted that Sweden had had 2,000years of paganism and only 970 yearsof Christianity. He described himself asnoting that they represented values

of the Gods contained what some in-terpreted as oblique references to theWaffen SS. Later, the Black Metal of the 1990s made this ideology moreradical and explicit, eventually givingrise, as we shall see, to a sub-genreknown as National Socialist Black Metal(NSBM).

Black Metal inspired two notable and of-ten interlinked sub-genres: Viking Metaland Folk Metal. The Viking Metal soundof Scandinavia is characterized by bom-bastic synthesizers, epic chanting, andWagnerian melody. It can be likened tolate Romantic classical music played onThe imagery of Viking Metal bands re-volves around Norse mythology, Norsepaganism, and the Viking age. Bands

like Enslaved, Einherjer (Norway),Falkenbach (Germany), and Tyr (FaroeIslands) are typical examples.

Folk Metal had its origins in the Brit-ish Thrash Metal band Skyclad, whosealbum, The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth (1990), is considered the earli-est example. The idea of incorporatingtraditional folk instruments and themesinto an extreme metal framework wasthen taken up by bands like Storm

(Norway), Cruachan (Ireland), Amor-phis (Finland), Moonspell (Portugal),and Orphaned Land (Israel), but it didnot truly come of age until the 2000s,with Finnish bands like Finntroll andMoonsorrow. Folk Metal naturally led toScandinavia, Russia, Ireland, Germany,and the Baltic states. There is even aFolk Metal scene in the United States,with the band Agalloch as a well-knownexponent.

Although there are points of contactbetween National Socialist Black Metaland Folk Metal, Folk Metal bands aregenerally apolitical. They are quitepopular in Europe, where they often giveconcerts and enjoy regular coverage inmetal magazines.

Still, the völkisch aspects of thesebands are evident not only in the fact thatthey often choose to sing in their nativetongues rather than the global Pop-music language of English, but in theimagery of their album covers and pub-licity photographs. Whereas pure BlackMetal musicians favor black leather,

spiked armbands, cartridge belts, longblack hair, and corpse-like face paint,

Viking and Folk Metal musicians pre-fer ancient and early medieval warriorcostumes from Northern Europe. They

often brandish swords and axes, andbattle reenactments are popular withinthe subculture.

bands have drawn inspiration from J. R.R. Tolkien. The Encyclopaedia Metal-lum (the online encyclopaedia of metalmusic) lists over 100 bands for whomOther bands have merely taken theirnames from The Lord of the Rings:Gorgoroth, Minas Tirith, Gandalf,Sauron, Cirith Gorgor, and Dagorladare examples.

Tolkien’s appeal is not surprising.He was preoccupied with folklore, lo-cal history and landscapes, rural ideals,anti-urbanism, anti-modernism, anti-industrialism, and anti-liberalism. Noris it likely to be a coincidence that inthe climactic battle between good andevil in The Lord of the Rings, whenAragorn rallies his forces for combat, headdresses them as “Men of the West.”

Communism falls in the East

During the early 1990s, Scandina-vian Black Metal reached and inspiredyoung men in Eastern Europe, then onlyrecently emerged from decades of com-munist rule. Communism is predicatedon modernity, egalitarianism, universal-ism, centralization, and homogeneity. Ittherefore demands a strict orthodoxy,which in the East was enforced bytotalitarian means. Historic nationalidentities were suppressed in favor of astandardized Soviet identity, and the So-viet bloc, comprised of once-sovereign

nations, was reduced to provinces runfrom Moscow.

a reassertion of long-dormant nationalidentities. In this context, a radicallyneo-völkisch music scene almost inevi-tably attracted a young generation eagerto reclaim its ancient roots in search of deeper meaning. Young Black Metallersin Eastern Europe were also drawn toNational Socialism, perhaps because itwas the diametric opposite of the hatedformer oppressor.

National Socialist Black Metal

(NSBM) is said to have originated inNorway during the early 1990s, withVarg Vikernes and his solo project,Burzum. NSBM took root most deeplyin Eastern Europe from the mid 1990s,especially in Poland, Russia, Belarus,the Ukraine, and East Germany, thoughit had some presence in France andGreece. Bands like Graveland, Veles,Infernum, Kataxu, Ohtar, Thor’s Ham-mer, Capricornus, Sunwheel, and Gon-tyna Kry (all from Poland), Nokturnal

Mortum (Ukraine), Temnozor (Russia),and Absurd (Germany) are well-knownNSBM bands. If they thrived, it is be-cause the NSBM scene, like the BlackMetal scene, developed its own labelsand distribution, which operated out of sight of outsiders.

It is important to note that NSBMfrom skinhead bands. NSBM is con-temptuous of mass politics, and focuseson the spiritual and cultural roots of

identity. Anti-Semitism is present, butmostly implicit and rarely expressed inthe albums except in a generalized, neo-pagan opposition to Judeo-Christianityand Islam; the three monotheistic re-ligions are lumped together as “threeweeds from the same root.”

NSBM is the most controversial of the offshoots of Black Metal, and itrepresents a fundamentalist minority.of the wider neo-völkisch pagan BlackMetal scene. The larger movement iscomprised of bands that may well reject

National Socialism, but are neverthelesssympathetic to some of its ideas andsentiments: the ideology of blood andsoil; nature mysticism; the rejectionof Christianity as an alien occupationforce; an appreciation of European

Commercial success has highlightedan interesting contradiction. NationalistBlack Metal bands in Eastern Europe,

not unlike people from the Third World,see the West as rich, and want a piece of the Western El Dorado. They also want

to be treated as equal partners,and fear being seen as na- ïve, primitive, and provincial.Yet, at the same time, thesebands see the West as degen-erate, and dread the prospectof Westernization or, worsestill, Americanization. To themAmerica is synonymous withcorrupt capitalism, culturaldeath, brainless consumerism,

and mass immigration.So far, Eastern Europe has not suf-

fered large-scale immigration from theThird World, and its populations arealmost entirely white. The transfer hasalready begun, however, and, even in2003, black Africans could be seen inthe streets of Kharkov in the Ukraine. I

suspect that as Eastern European nationsare absorbed into the European Unionand their laws are harmonized with it,and as the viruses of political correct-ness and multiculturalism take hold, wewill see an even greater radicalizationof the ethno-nationalist sentiments thatappeared after the fall of communism.Nationalist Black Metal is important inthis process because, as we saw in the-tant element in political and culturaldissidence.

The Ukrainian paganBlack Metal band Kroda, for example,expresses its romantic, Ukrainiannationalism in terms that leave littleroom for multiculturalism (see side-bar). In June 2009, “antifa” terroristsattacked Kroda. They demolished a car,destroyed instruments, and seriouslyinjured members of the band, forcingit to cancel its tour through Poland,

Germany, and Austria.Artists, record labels, and mail orderhouses in Eastern Europe have sporadi-cally faced persecution from the govern-ment either for expressing ethnonation-alist views or merely for being part of asubculture that recognizes nationalism.Roman Saenko of the Ukrainian BlackMetal bands Drudkh and Hate Forestfaced periods of intensive police inves-tigation, while a number of people as-sociated with pagan bands and labels in

Eastern Europe have been periodicallyharassed and even imprisoned.

The emergence of radical, nationalistmusic in recent decades is not simplyan oddity that occurred on the fringesof the West and took root in the East. ABlack Metal scene exists in almost everyEuropean-derived country, including theUnited States, Canada, Australia, andNew Zealand. Some of these bands are just as radical as those that have emergedin the post-Communist East.

Perhaps this is because, as Tomis- Homo Americanus, it made little difference thatcommunism fell in the East because bythen it had arisen in the West, thoughin a more insidious and sophisticatedform. Whereas Eastern European com-munism was vulgar and obvious andtook the form of truncheon-wieldingcommissars and gulags, in the West

it has taken the form of political cor-rectness, ethnic sensitivity training,multiracialism, feminism, non-white

racial preferences, homosexual rights,Freudo-Marxian scholasticism, anti-hatelaws, and self-censorship. Professorsat Western universities display Com-has its own version of the commissars,in the form of screaming, bat-swinging,

masked, “anti-racist” terrorists. The riseof explicitly nationalist Black Metal inthe West has been driven by a culturalhegemony based on the same principlesthat applied in the East.

Counter-Cultural Consciousness

Black Metal has achieved greatervisibility and industry recognition thanwould have been imagined possiblesome years ago, given how antithetical

all that is going on today: how ourfolk is raped, oppressed, and suf-fers genocide; how our heritage isperverted. it is to the values of modern Westernsocieties. To the great irritation of cer-tain anti-white groups on the Left, BlackMetal and Black Metal-derived albumsof a nationalist character—includingthose by Burzum—are regularly stockedby mainstream music chains and megas-tores, and are available through standardInternet outlets. Moreover, NorwegianBlack Metal bands such as Dimmu Bor-gir, Enslaved, and The Kovenant havenot only been commercially successful,but received the Spellemannprisen, alsoknown as the “Norwegian Grammyawards.” Albums by bands like Night-wish, whose founding members haveroots in the Black Metal scene, havegone multi-platinum in Finland. Slowlybut surely, artists of an alternative sen-sibility have been making inroads intothe mainstream.

Needless to say, the award-winning

bands are, as far as I know, apolitical,and in some cases may have liberalattitudes. What is important, however,is that they are part of a wider networkof extreme metal bands, labels, andenthusiasts. They are only the visiblepart of the iceberg, with at least a sig-mainstream does not see comprised of people who reject political correctness

and multiculturalism, who reject theentire academic, media, and politicalestablishment.

These people yearn for somethingbetter: a new nationalist order that

prizes strength, and virility, rootedness,heroism, and glory; that values qualityover quantity, instinct over rationality,landscape over cityscape, hierarchy

over equality, originality over stan-dardization, organic community overatomized individualism, traditional(complementary) sex roles over themodern war of the sexes; that does notfeel the need to justify itself to others,and that proudly asserts its Whitenessand Europeanness.

This is not to say that Black Metallersand their fans would be able to articulatetheir worldview in such explicit terms,or even that they would be able to rec-ognize that there even is a worldviewencoded in their music. Likewise, it

would be wrong to assume that BlackMetallers generally live up to their ownideals. Like all marginal subcultures,Black Metal attracts some number of unbalanced types who drink excessivelyand seem bent on self-destruction. Thereare also nihilistic and highly misan-thropic strands within Black Metal thatneed not concern us here.

Furthermore, outside the relativelysmall and highly politicized NSBMscene, it would be a mistake to assume

that the wider Black Metal scene isanything more than an implicitly whitecommunity. Dissent from the liberal-egalitarian dispensation is mainly aes-

thetic and spiritual, not directly political:fans dress a certain way, they decoratetheir homes in certain ways, and theyread certain types of books (usuallyand history).

One colorful Black Metal fan I knowlives in Bedfordshire, England. His cot-tage is painted all black inside, he uses atarantulas and mediaeval weapons onthe walls; some of his decor, whichincludes a Hitler Youth poster, accordswith his racial nationalist sympathies.

Most Black Metal fans, however, aremiddle class and hold ordinary jobs,though they may decorate their houseswith a few Gothic ornaments. Music,not race or politics, is what they havein common.

Yet, because of the inegalitarianand völkisch ideology embedded in themusic, it is not surprising that I com-monly meet Black Metal enthusiasts inracial nationalist circles. Some belong-

What we see is a very loose networkof cultural and political dissidents, someracially aware, others not. This networkcontinues to grow. Even if we mightsee only 50 to 200 people at a typicalconcert, the Encyclopaedia Metallum already lists 1,100 Viking/Folk and over17,000 Black Metal bands.

I do not doubt that the lunatics on theLeft hope that with enough miseduca--conian laws, they can force Europeanheretics into submission, even if theycan never convert them. I believe they

will never succeed, for we are dealingwith people who never accepted theliberal, universalist, egalitarian project.What is more, they are numerous andspread across a complicated network of interlocking scenes and subcultures, alldecentralized, not all of them musical,and with constantly shifting boundar-ies. This does not offer the Left an easytarget.

Of course, Black Metal has notbeen completely immune to orthodoxthe British extreme music magazine,

Terrorizer , which is available on news-stands, published an interview withSpear of Longinus, an Australian Black/ Thrash Metal band that had releasedan album called The Yoga of NationalSocialism. Although the interview wasstrictly about music, the magazineapologized in the face of complaints,calling the interview a “misstep.”

In 2007, the German magazine, Rock  Hard , which generally celebrates dissentand non-conformism, ran an article titled

“ Der rechte Rand im Black Metal,”(“Black Metal’s Far-Right Border”)complaining about labels and mail orderhouses that sold what they consideredpolitically incorrect Black Metal. I havea music label of my own, and during themid-2000s a number of metal magazinesand distributors boycotted some of thebands on my roster, complaining abouttheir politics.

Many musicians simply want to avoidtrouble. Consider the case of Kroda.Despite its members obviously politicalviews, after the Warsaw attack they is-sued a statement claiming that they aresimply a Pagan Metal band that is “OUTof modern politics.”

As it does anywhere, the prospectof commercial success can cause the  jettisoning of principles. In the BlackMetal scene, the few, larger, commercialenterprises tend towards political cor-

rectness, while the numerous, smaller,underground ones tend towards politicalincorrectness. When he signed with oneof the larger, commercially orientedspecialist record labels, Roman Saenko,who had enjoyed a long underground ca-reer as a racial nationalist artist, quicklypapered over his racialideology and close linkswith NSBM by makingincredible anti-raciststatements and denials.His new label realizedthat his band Drudkh

had proven to be a bigseller and wanted toprotect its investment.Following Drudkh’sre-incarnation as a po-litically correct band, itwas white-washed bythe larger magazinesand distributors thatonce boycotted it.

On the other hand,there are artists who willnot compromise. Hen-drik Möbus, who grew

up in Eastern Germany,continues to producenationalist Black Metaland organize concerts despiteeven prison time for such thingsas selling nationalist material. “I want toshow that it is possible to make concertsBlack Metal bands in Germany,” he haswritten, “if you have the stamina andthe spine to pull it off, regardless of the

combined pressure from Antifa, media,and authorities.” For him, the slogan,“Black Metal is more than just music,”is a living reality.

Hendrik Möbus’ comparatively highcontributed to his persecution. In coun-tries whose laws are not so restrictive,heretics need only show some back-bone. When the British extreme musicmagazine Zero Tolerance , which is alsoavailable from newsagents, ran its owninterview with Spear of Longinus in2007, it ignored complaints and foundits sales and advertising unaffected.

The underground Black Metal sceneis as much a self-contained universe asmodern academia, and this insulatesBlack Metallers from the practical con-sequences of heterodoxy as much as theacademic universe insulates Leftist cra-zies from common sense. Underground

Black Metal operates with its own inter-nal economy, code of conduct, media,distribution, and trade vernacular. Whatis more, Black Metallers revel in theirown marginality, so even those who arenot explicitly ideological resist yieldingto outside pressure. This, and the willful

pursuit of obscurity and anonymity of some of its actors make it impossibleto ban it or shut it down on a wholesalebasis, at least not without resorting toopenly totalitarian methods that wouldonly further discredit the system.

In short, while it is true that main-stream popular culture is a desert forEuropean-descended peoples today,there are growing oases where many of 

providing cultural and creative spaceswithin which we can elaborate a newparadigm for the future, rather thansimply lament the present or mourn thepast. Just as importantly, they provideeconomic and professional opportunitiesfor those who wish to make a living ina manner consistent with their tempera-ment, conscience, and ethnic interests.

can expect two parallel universes—oursand our opponents’—to become pro-gressively more extreme and polarized,as each side tries to outlast the other. For us it is a race against time, be-cause present trends place aeffort will be futile. We mustmake sure we are ready whenthe present system comes crash-ing down, as it must. The battlewill not be won with BlackMetal, of course, but music isimportant—has always beenimportant—in any counter-cultural movement, and becauseit is a quintessentially Europeanart form, it provides a radical,pure, and ferocious source of energy and conquering fury.Without it we will never winthe culture war.

rock music. Much of it tends to have acrashing, driven quality. Some piecesare quietly lyrical—or at least start outthat way before reaching more typicallevels of frenzy. It cannot be denied,however, the work of the better knownBlack Metal bands is musically inven-tive, seriously rehearsed, and tightly per-formed. These are not hobbyist garage

with the volume turned low—not howthe musicians expect to be heard.YouTube.com has countless concert

clips and music videos from hundredsof Black Metal bands. Just type in someof the names mentioned in this article,and sometimes disturbing world. Thelyrics—and comments from viewers—are usually in foreign languages, whichmakes these “scenes” even more ob-scure. What you see may not be thefuture of Western Civilization you mayhave in mind, but it is certainly not a

celebration of “diversity.”

The Texas Adoption Project (TAP)was one of the most thoroughand long-running efforts ever

undertaken to investigate the relativeeffects of environment and genes on

intelligence and personality. It was a35-year study of 300 families that hadadopted children from the MethodistMission Home of San Antonio, Texas.This slim, well-written book is the

Adoption studies are useful, of 

course, because they allow research-ers to distinguish fairly easily betweenthe effects of genes and environment.In an ordinary household, the parentsprovide all the genes of their childrenas well as the household environment,and egalitarians have long argued that

environment counts for far more thangenes; middle-class children do betterthan poor children, not because theyinherited good genes, but because theirfortunate parents gave them fortunate

environments.Because adopted children are geneti-cally unrelated to their adoptive parents,they are natural study subjects: Do bio-logical and adopted children growingup in the same family resemble eachother because of their common fam-ily environment, or do the genes theyinherited from different sets of parentsplay a more important role?

Many adoption studies have tried toanswer this question, but the families in

the TAP were particularly good researchcandidates for several reasons. First,the families were studied until the chil-dren, both adopted and biological, wereadults. Most adoption research does notfollow subjects for decades, so cannotdetermine if the relative importance of genes and environment changes overtime. Another common defect in adop-

tion studies is that little is usually knownabout birth parents, but a great deal wasknown about the TAP birth mothers.Unwed women who planned to givetheir children up for adoption lived at

the Methodist Mission Home for sometime before they had their babies. Whilethey were at the home, they took a seriesof intelligence and personality tests.In some cases, a fair amount was alsoknown about the birth fathers as well.

One disadvantage in the TAP, how-ever, was that the average intelligence of the birth mothers was not that differentfrom that of the adoptive parents. It iseasier to separate the effects of genesand environment when there is a large

IQ difference between birth and adop-tive mothers, but the Methodist MissionHome operated in a way that tendedto keep IQs similar. When a womandecided to enter the home, both herparents and the parents who planned toadopt the baby were expected to sharethe costs of room, board, and medicaltreatment. This meant that birth andadoptive mothers both tended to bemiddle class. However, there was aconsiderable range in intelligence andpersonality in both groups, so it waspossible to see if placing a child from aless intelligent mother in a home withintelligent adoptive parents would raisethe child’s intelligence—or vice versa.Many of the families also had biologi-cal children, so it was possible to seewhether being reared in the same familymade children similar to each other evenif they were not biologically related.

The method used in the TAP to ana-lyze the effects of genes and environ-this page is an example of a path modelfor a typical family of two parents andtwo children. The caption under theobserved variables, that is to say, valuesthat can be measured. In this case, theyare the tested IQs of the mother andfather (IQM and IQF) and of child 1 and2 (IQ1 and IQ2). The researcher triesvarious values for the contributions of genes and environment to the children’s

intelligences, and chooses the model thatbest explains the observed variables.The trouble with this model is that

parents give children both genes andenvironment. The causational paths of the mother and father on the intelligenceof the children, includes both, and thereis no good way to separate them.

and two adopted children, each with hisown set of parents. Sophisticated model-ing of this kind—it is not necessary fullyto understand the model but the captionoffers a reasonably good explanation—lets scientists separate out the effects of genes and environment.

sults suggest that growing up in the samefamily can make people less like eachother, as they establish personalities todistinguish themselves from each other.Finally, family environment has someeffect on intelligence when children areyoung, but drops essentially to zero bythe time children become adults.

Parents are often astonished to learnthat although genes account for perhapsone half or more of the variation in theintelligence of their children, the re-mainder is almost certainly not the resultof the environment the parents provided.When children grow up in the samefamily they have what is called a sharedenvironment—the same parents, house,neighborhood, etc.—and a non-sharedenvironment, which is all the uniquethings that happen to them and to no oneelse. Path modeling of the kind used inthe TAP makes it possible to distinguish

between the effects of shared and non-shared environment, and what childrenhave in common doesn’t seem to havemuch effect on the way they turn out.Living in the same household doesn’tmuch as the unique experiences theyhave on their own.

It would be wrong, however, to con-clude that households have no effect.Adoptive families do not represent theentire range of all families, since agen-cies do not place children in indigentor obviously abusive homes. No doubt,

children who grow up in completemisery and squalor suffer because of this, but within the broad range of themiddle classes, the effect of householdenvironment on intelligence is smallfor children, and drops to nothing foradults.

The TAP found that correlations inintelligence and personality were greaterbetween fathers and their children thanbetween mothers and children. Theauthors could give no explanation forthis, but whatever the cause, it does notsupport the view that environment over-

whelms genes. Mothers usually spendmore time with children than fathersdo, so their environmental effect shouldbe greater.

One of the TAP’s most intriguingconclusions concerns the manner in-enced by family environment. Whenparents (both birth and adoptive) andchildren were compared on the results of personality inventory tests, the correla-tions were closer between birth mothers

and their adopted-away children thanfor parents who reared their biologicalchildren themselves. In other words,the children whose personalities weremost like that of their mothers’ were

the ones who never knew their moth-ers. As the authors note, “The sugges-tion is that processes like imitation andidentification, which would tend to

lead to positive correlations, are beingoutweighed by processes like contrast orcompetition, which would lead to nega-tive ones.” Children may be developingtheir personalities in opposition to theirparents rather than in conformity withthem.

The TAP reached other conclusionsthat are in line with other studies: Aboutone quarter to one half of differences inpersonality are due to genes and the restto unshared environment. Over time,however, children do develop person-alities that tend to resemble those of 

their parents. Perhaps genetically-basedsimilarities become more evident after achild moves out and is no longer tryingso hard to be different from his parents.Not surprisingly, the adult personalitiesand IQs of unrelated people growing upin the same household have a correlationof zero.

The TAP offered an interesting op-portunity to study what is called gen-otype-environment correlation, whichassumes that parents provide environ-

ments for their children that match theparents’ genotypes. For example, high-IQ parents are likely to surround theirchildren with books and educationalgames, thus giving them an IQ-boosting

environment in addition to good genes.Low-IQ parents would presumably dothe opposite, so that genes and environ-ment work together to push children

toward extremes.Adopted children are geneticallyunrelated to the parents so genotype-environment correlation should presum-ably have less effect on them, leavingadopted children, as a group, with lessvariation (a smaller standard deviation)in intelligence and other traits. The TAPfound no such results with, if anything,a tendency towards a smaller standarddeviation in biological children. Alleg-edly IQ-modifying environments didnot have much effect at all. However theTAP results are analyzed, they run di-

rectly counter to what has been an articleof leftist faith for decades: that privilege,not genes, accounts for success.

The authors of the study point out,however, that unshared environment(and measurement error) account for agreat deal of individual variation, andthis means that much remains unex-plained. What is it about the unsharedenvironment that accounts for 30 to 40percent of individual variation in intel-ligence and personality? The authors

suspect that as techniques for measure-ment and observation improve, it mayunique environments act on individualgenotypes, but warn that knowledgeat this level may come at an unaccept-able cost in privacy. It would probablyrequire intrusive techniques to findout how unshared environment reallyworks.

Finally, the authors note that their on variations in intelligence—25 to 35lower than those often found in studiesof identical twins reared apart. Theyexplain this by describing the differ-ence between additive and nonadditiveeffects. Additive effects are the cumula-tive result of genes acting individually,whereas nonadditive effects arise from

Because identical twins have identi-

cal genotypes, they share both additive-ences of genes and environment areclear. Ordinary siblings have uniquegene combinations in which nonaddi-tive effects work in unpredictable ways.These effects tend to make siblingsdifferent from each other or from theirparents—thus giving the appearance thatgenes were playing a smaller role—butthese very differences arise from nonad-ditive genetic effects and are thereforethe result of the action of genes.

This study did not have a racial angle.All the parents and children were white,so no formal conclusions can be drawnfrom it about whether growing up ina white family would raise the IQs of black children. Nevertheless, the im-plications are clear. The environmentparents provide for their children has

turn out, and may even push children tobecome less like other family membersbecause of competition or the desire tobe different. This effect would surely begreater in families—whether biologicalor adoptive—composed of people of different races.

Perhaps the greatest value of thisstudy for non-specialists, however, isthe clear way in which it describes how

the research was carried out, and themany steps taken to ensure the mostaccurate results. The authors explain a

host of details, whether about statisticalmethods or practical matters, that bringtheir story to life. This is the kind of science egalitarians hate, but the TAPwas conducted with such obvious care,rigor, and dispassion that it should beconvincing to all but the most crazedideologues.

walked out of a coalition withthe French-speaking parties.What prompted the crisiswas a complex question of therights of French speakers intraditionally Dutch-speakingsuburbs of Brussels, but the realissue was whether Belgium should sur-

vive as a unitary state. New elections,now called for June, will not solve thatproblem. In the view of the Vlaams Be-lang, the dynamic, Flemish-nationalistpolitical party that calls for the partitionof Belgium along linguistic lines, thatproblem can be solved only when thereis an amicable divorce between the twolinguistic groups, and the political mapis redrawn to match the ethnic map (formore on the activities of the VlaamsBelang see “European Nationalism on

Americans, however, have fewgood ways to keep up with theVB. Most US newspapers rarely

mention it, and when they do, theyare careful to call it “extremist” if not

“fascist.” The VB has a large and activeweb page and many excellent publica-tions but they are all in Dutch—exceptfor one, The Flemish Republic. This isa free, English-language quarterly thatstates its purpose in the nameplate: It isto explain “why Flanders should becomean independent state.”

One of the ways The Flemish Repub-lic (TFR) promotes independence is to-ders of union with the poorer, less pro-ductive French-speaking region knownas Wallonia. In its most recent issue,TFR points out that the unemploymentrate in Wallonia is nearly three timesthat of Flanders, and that Flanders paysfor the bulk of Walloon unemploymentwho are employed, 29 percent work for-ings work for government.

TFR also points out the costs toFlanders of membership in the EuropeanUnion. If it were an independent countryits net, per capita annual contribution toof more than $1,500 for each family of four. This is twice as much as the sumpaid by the Germans, four times as muchas the French, and six times as much asthe British. The VB argues that if Flan-

ders had its own say in EU deliberations,it could work out something fairer.However, the greatest price Flanders

pays for being part of Belgium is the im-migration policy that the socialist federalgovernment forces on it. For example,although it is the French-speakers whoclaim to favor Third-World immigra-percent of successful asylum seekers toFlanders and only 12 percent to Wallo-nia. Why? Because most asylum seekers

are penniless, and it is the region, not thefederal government, that writes welfarechecks.

An article in the latest issue of TFRpoints out that in Brussels, immigrantgangs of black Africans, north Africans,and Eastern Europeans have turned partsof the city into no-go zones where thepolice fear to tread (see also “Black Dé-molition,” AR, June 2005). Even jour-nalists may be assaulted by immigrant“youths.” TFR notes that the socialistswho run the city actually want more suchimmigrants because Third-Worlders canbe put on the fast track to citizenshipand will vote socialist. An independentFlanders—Eigen volk eerst!—would puta stop to that.

Each issue of The Flemish Republic covers these and other subjects in ar-ticles written in idiomatic English andgeared to foreigners who may not be

familiar with the intricacies of Belgianhistory or politics. That the VlaamsBelang takes the trouble to publish inEnglish shows how well its leadersgrasp the importance of what the partyis doing, not just for Flanders but for allpeople who refuse to be submerged bythe multi-culti tide.

The 2010 party congress

Your editor ran across a copy of TheFlemish Republic2010 Vlaams Belang party congress inAntwerp. I was in Belgium for a weekon business, and was eager to see theparty in action. As I approached thecongress venue there was no questionI was in the right place; the buildingwas festooned with the huge black-for demonstrators—not a one. Later I

learned that someone had thrown an eggat the building, but that “anti-racists”had pretty much given up on the VB10 years ago. Flemish nationalism ishere to stay and the Left can do nothingabout it.

The congress itself was an impressivegathering; an estimated 1,300 activists inan auditorium equipped with the latest inbig-screen video. I couldn’t understanda word anyone said, but I could feel theelectricity run through the crowd whencharismatic leaders took the podium.This is clearly a party that is goingand dedication.

After the formal program, I wasswept along with 1,000 other thirstypeople to a long bar and a score of tables set up in the lobby. I struck upconversations with English-speakingactivists who were delighted to meet

an American who shares their visionof a free and independent Flanders. Webought beers for each other and tradedperspectives on the suicide of the Westand what it will take to bring it back tolife. If anyone can do it, it will be peoplelike these VB activists: thoughtful,good-looking, well dressed, committedto preserving their heritage and passingit on to their children.

How to explain the black-white IQ difference?

The lower IQs of blacks comparedin the United States in 1917 when

soldiers drafted into the Army were test-ed for intelligence, and it was found thatthe white average of 100. This result haslater studies, with black-white IQ dif-ferences typically between 15 and 17points. This means about 15 percent of 

blacks have an IQ higher than the av-erage white (or a little fewer, becausemany studies have found that blackscores are not as broadly distributedas those of whites). Blacks who havehigh IQs tend to have whiter skinsand other markers of white ancestry,which gives them more white genesfor IQ. This is obvious from such publicCondoleezza Rice, Barack Obama, andOprah Winfrey.

At the lower end of the IQ distribu-tion, about 2 per cent of whites and about

70, the threshold for mental retardation.Charles Murray and the late RichardHerrnstein showed in their 1994 bookThe Bell Curve that these IQ differencesdo much to explain why, on average,blacks do poorly in school, college, andemployment, and are over-represented

among single mothers and those onwelfare.

Ever since this IQ difference wasdemonstrated there has been debateabout whether the causes are genetic,environmental, or some mixture of the two. In recent years, James Flynn,emeritus professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, has been theleading advocate of the environmen-talist case, while Professors PhilippeRushton and Arthur Jensen have arguedthe hereditarian position. Before he

emigrated from the United States totook part in civil rights marches, and hecontinues to be active in leftist causes.He has now spent the last 30 yearstrying to prove that the black-white

IQ difference is determined wholly byenvironment. This is a formidable task,given the huge amount of evidencefavoring a genetic basis, including thesmaller average black brain size, thefact that black infants adopted by whitefamilies do not register IQ gains, andthe universally observed low black IQthroughout the world.

Nevertheless, Professor Flynn leavesno stone unturned to promote his case.In his 2007 book What is Intelligence?he asserted that “there have been thou-sands of blacks of genius or talent,” and

cited Saint Augustine, Victor Hugo,Paul Robeson, and Thomas Sowell asexamples. This is hardly a persuasivelist. Saint Augustine was born in NorthAfrica and was of Berber (North Afri-can Caucasoid) descent. Photographsof Victor Hugo suggest he was pureCaucasian without a hint of Negroidfeatures. Paul Robeson was certainly ablack singer of talent, but singing doesnot require a high IQ. Thomas Sowell isa black political scientist of some talent

who clearly has some white ancestry.This bizarre quartet are apparently thebest examples of black genius and talentthat Professor Flynn can muster.

Professor Flynn has also sought tosupport his contention that the causesof the black-white IQ difference areenvironmental by maintaining thatthe American black-white IQ gap hasbeen declining in recent years, andthat between 1970 and 1992 the gapdecreased by 5.5 IQ points. He contendsthat this narrowing can be projected into

the future and that in the fullness of time will be closed completely, andblacks will have the same averageIQ as whites. When this time comes,

people will look back and realize thatthe low black IQ was entirely due todiscrimination by racist whites.

Professors Rushton and Jensenhave refuted Professor Flynn’s con-tention that the American black-whiteIQ gap has been narrowing in recentyears. They show that from 1917 to

average IQ, and also that from 1954-erage black educational achievementmeasured by math and reading in theNational Assessment of Educational

Progress studies.

Professors Rushton and Jensen pro-pose that the black-white IQ gap in the-cally determined. They argue that it iswidely accepted that the heritability of intelligence within races is between 50and 70 percent, and that the heritabilityof the intelligence difference between

blacks and whites is about the same oreven higher. Certainly, it is inconceiv-percent estimate is accurate, it meansthat if blacks could be given all the en-vironmental advantages of whites, theblack-white IQ gap could be reducedabout 13 IQ points.

Professors Rush-ton and Jensen acceptthat the IQs of bothblacks and whiteshave increased sincethe 1930s, but theyproduce evidencethat the g componentof intelligence hasnot increased at all.Intelligence can bedivided into g andnon-g components. G 

is the “general factor”that is a partial de-terminant of perfor-mance on all cogni-tive tasks. The non-g components consistof other abilities that areindependent of g (e.g. reasoning, verbalcomprehension, spatial ability, memory,etc). The professors used a statisticaltechnique to measure both the g and thenon-g components of intelligence and

concluded that it is only the latter thathave increased, probably as a result of improvements in education, health, andnutrition. This is a novel and interestingthough some scholars have reserva-tions about the methodology used, andremain skeptical about how accurately g 

can be separated fromnon-g components.Professors Rushtonand Jensen also dem-onstrate that the testswhose results are mostheritable produce thelargest black-whiteIQ differences, show-ing that the strongerthe genetic input, thegreater the black IQ

The conclusion

that the black-whiteIQ gap has not de-clined since 1917 isa serious problem forenvironmentalists.The environments of 

American blacks haveimproved greatly since 1917, with theachievement of higher living standards,better health care, integrated schooling,The environment of whites has also im-

proved, but that of blacks has certainlyimproved more.

So why has the gap not been reduced?Perhaps Professors Rushton and Jensenmay have underestimated the geneticcontribution to the black-white IQ gaphas not declined since 1917, it means itis resistant to environmental improve-ments and may be entirely geneticallydetermined. If it is possible to reduce theblack-white IQ gap no one now knowshow this can be done.

Professor Flynn has yet to answerthese points but he is a tenacious advo-cate of lost causes and we have probablynot heard the last from him.

Tian Sheng Yu was a 59-year-oldChinese immigrant who ran a paint-ing and remodeling business in SanFrancisco. In April, he took his son JinCheng Yu on a shopping trip across thebay to Oakland. While the elder Yu wasparking the car, two young black menattacked his son for no apparent reason,

punching him in the face. Unwilling tolet the incident pass, Yu tracked downhis son’s assailants, and began scoldingthem in his native Mandarin Chinese.

One of the blacks hit Yu in theface, knocking him to pavement.He hit his head when he fell,went into a coma, and died fourdays later.

The attack on the Yus was justthe latest in a series of black-on-Asian assaults in the San Francis-co area. In March, a 52-year-old

Cheng was waiting for her daugh-ter at a bus stop when a 15-year-old black boy grabbed her frombehind, choked her, and threw herinto the path of an oncomingbus. Although the bus managedto stop, she was knocked out andshattered several of her teeth. In

January, a gang of black teenagers beatleft a San Francisco bus station.
