GEORGIA’S WAREHOUSING SNAPSHOT
• Georgia is home to more than 580 warehouse distribu-
tion locations, totaling 155 million square feet of ware-
house space and employing nearly 66,000 workers.
• Georgia’s thriving deep water ports offer international
companies greater access to U.S. markets. World-class
intermodal facilities offer the upmost efficiency in getting
products to consumers.
• Industrial buildings are available and affordable
throughout Georgia.
• Georgia’s work force is well-trained and wage rates are
competitive.
• Georgia is the center of the nation’s fast-growing South-
east. Product manufacturers and retailers gain advantages
by locating distribution capabilities in the markets they
serve most.
With superior highway access to the eastern U.S.
market, growing port connections to the world, and
an abundance of workers at low relative wages,
Georgia is the ideal location for the warehousing
and logistics industry. Georgia’s historic prominence
as a transportation crossroads has made it a natural
location for growth. The state comprises more than
726 million square feet of industrial space, with
metro Atlanta -- the largest market in Georgia and
sixth largest in the U.S. -- accounting for 617 million
square feet of industrial space.
Warehousing continues to be the catalyst and
leading driver for growth in the state. Georgia is
home to 21 warehouses with more than 1 million
square feet of space and 75 warehouses with
500,000 to 999,999 square feet of space. Nearly half
of the 2009 “Top 3PLs” in the United States have a
presence in Georgia, according to Inbound Logistics
magazine July 2009 edition.

“The Atlanta region has been a strategic
goal for NTP. The new Austell distribution
center gives us the capabilities we need to
continue to provide best-in-class logistics ser-
vices across the country. Such an expansion
will enable NTP to better service our existing
dealers as well as invite many new dealers to
experience our high fill rates, late same-day
shipping cutoff times and our exceptional staff
who provide great customer service.”

ATLANTA: Sixth Largest Industrial Market and Third Fastest-Growing to 2015*
Georgia has one of the most specialized wholesale trade infrastructures in the world. The avail-
ability and affordability of industrial space appropriate for warehouse distribution is a big part of that
infrastructure. Building availability combined with outstanding transportation infrastructure make the
state unbeatable for getting products to major consumer markets all over the world.
Georgia’s Intermodal Facilities Make it Happen Georgia’s world-class intermodal facilities
strategically located around the state enable
importers and exporters to quickly and efficiently
move products from ocean carrier, to rail to truck.
Georgia’s intermodal facilities have some of the
fastest transition times in the United States.
Major intermodal facilities in Georgia include:
• CSX Hulsey Rail Yard, Atlanta
• Norfolk Southern Inman Rail Yard, Atlanta
• CSX Savannah Yard, Savannah
• Norfolk Southern James D. Mason ICTF,
Garden City
• CSX Fairburn Industry Yard, Fairburn (Metro
Atlanta)
• Norfolk Southern Whitaker Rail Yard, Aus-
tell (Metro Atlanta)
• CSX Chatham ICTF, Garden City (Near
Savannah)
• Norfolk Southern Savannah
Ocean Shipping Georgia is home to the fastest-growing
port in the United States, the Port of Savan-
nah. Established in 1945, the Georgia Ports
Authority (GPA) operates modern and efficient
deepwater facilities and provides value-add-
ed marine terminal services in Savannah and
Brunswick, as well as inland barge terminals
in Bainbridge and Columbus.
Georgia’s ports are major economic engines,
contributing nearly $25 billion to the state’s
gross product, generating 286,500 jobs and
creating $55.8 billion in sales.
Georgia’s logistics infrastructure is one of the most developed in the world.

Why Georgia for Warehouse and Logistics:
Georgia is home to an outstanding work force. Strong work ethic and world-class training
programs propel productivity while competitive wage rates make warehouse distribution locations in
Georgia some of the most efficient and successful in the world. Lean manufacturing options are avail-
able through universities such as Georgia Tech to make processes more efficient.
Georgia’s logistics work force is highly trained and cost competitive.
Georgia Quick Start Work Force Training Program
For more than 40 years, Quick Start has provided customized work force training free-of-charge to
qualified businesses in Georgia.
Today, the program is one of the state’s key assets for supporting new and expanding industries.
Quick Start delivers training in classrooms, mobile labs or directly on the plant floor, wherever it
works best for a company.
Quick Start has developed hundreds of warehouse distribution programs to help train workers all
over the state. Customized job-specific training includes:
• RF Scanner operations
• Label reading
• Picking and power equipment such as forklifts and turret trucks
For more information, visit: www.georgiaquickstart.org
“Quick Start was incredibly helpful in that
during our startup; thanks to them, we could
focus on our operations rather than producing
documents. The quality of what Quick Start
produced was so great that a lot of the people in
IKEA were jealous. No one else has anything like
Quick Start, and they kept saying ‘What do you
mean, it’s free?’”
Gary Holler, IKEA Operations Support Manager
“Working with the Quick Start team has been
a very enjoyable experience. Not only did we
meet our goal, I feel the Quick Start team has
surpassed it with the positive obstinacy, perse-
verance and that irrepressible determination.”
Ed Morris, IKEA Distribution Center Manager
“From the Inside Out, Warehouse to Housewares, the IKEA Experience is Unique,” Quick Start website, October, 2010
Even IKEA’s highly automated warehouse
distribution center in Savannah is heavily reliant
on a skilled team to move thousands of pallets
through the system each day.

The Center of Innovation for Logistics is Georgia’s leading resource for accelerating logistics growth and competitiveness in the state. Statewide in focus, the
Center of Innovation for Logistics is headquartered at Georgia Tech’s Savannah campus and is located close to the Georgia Ports Authority, the Savannah River, two
major interstates, an international airport, and many large distribution centers - making it a great resource for logistics businesses. For more information, visit:
http://logistics.georgiainnovation.org
Why Georgia for Warehouse and Logistics:
Center of Innovation for Logistics
The Center’s services are primarily focused on:
Volume: Maximizing throughput into and through existing facilities
and building the most effective and efficient infrastructure to handle
growth: warehouse management software, material handling equip-
ment, Optical Character Recognition, smart warehouse, access control
systems and others.
Velocity: Compressing the shipping and delivery cycle and improving
the overall agility or speed of response of a company i.e., information
sharing tools, enterprise software and next-best move algorithms.
Visibility: Real-time information regarding the location/status of
shipments and assets in the global supply chain. Process visibility to
identify and resolve systemic problems is important: auto-identification
(RFID, Barcodes), Position Detection Systems, simulation, modeling,
smart-cameras, GIS Information Mapping, container security devices
and other technologies.
Georgia Tech Supply Chain & Logistics Institute Georgia Tech’s Supply Chain & Logistics Institute (SCL) is the world’s largest logis-
tics-related research and education enterprise. The Institute is globally recognized
for its expertise and longevity with 60 years of industry research and collaboration.
SCL provides global leadership for research and education in supply chain
engineering. SCL defines “Supply Chain Engineering” as the application of scientific
principles to optimize the design and integration of supply chain processes, infra-
structure, technology and strategy. While SCL has resources and programs in supply
chain management, its primary focus is on development of new tools for analysis,
design and management of logistics processes, and new concepts and strategies
for the practice of supply chain engineering. For more information, visit: www.scl.
