Coach Joe Niland has been the head man at Mobile for 11 seasons. Not a stranger to success, Ni-land has posted 20-plus win seasons in 10 of his 17 seasons as a head coach and recorded his fi rst 30-win season during the 2004-05 season when he guided the Mobile Rams to a 30-6 record. He guided the Rams to back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

In eleven full seasons as head basketball coach at the University of Mobile, Niland’s teams have posted a 231-128 record overall and a 119-69 mark in GCAC play. His 1999-2000 squad went 24-10, earning a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. In all, Niland has guided the Rams to fi ve NAIA National Tournament appearances in nine seasons, two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championships, and back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season co-championships in 2003-04 and 2004-05. His 2001-02 team posted the program’s fi rst win versus a NCAA Div. I opponent, when the Rams upset defending SWAC Champion Alabama State 65-61. Niland also serves as the Athletic Director at the University of Mobile, overseeing 13 athletics programs that constantly rate at the top of the NAIA.

Before his time at Mobile, Niland led Spring Hill College to the NAIA National Tournament on two separate occasions, both in the 1993-94 season and again during 1998-99 season. During his

tenure at Spring Hill, the Badgers compiled a 127-60 (.679) overall record and a 75-29 (.721) mark in the GCAC. Niland’s 127 wins are the most in SHC history.

The Niland family has a history of success in athletics. His father, the late Joe Sr., coached at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY from 1947-54 and was also the Director of College Scouting for the Buffalo Braves of the NBA. Niland’s younger brother, Dave, is head basketball coach at Penn State-Behrend College in Erie, PA and his late uncle, Tom Niland, coached at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY from 1947-1972 and served as the school’s athletic director for 45 years, retiring in 1992. Also, Michigan’s head basketball coach, John Beilein, who took the University of West Virginia to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tour-nament in 2004-05, is Niland’s fi rst cousin.

Prior to coming to Mobile and taking his fi rst head coaching job at Spring Hill College, Ni-land spent three seasons as an assistant at Flori-da Southern College where the Mocs posted a 73-20 overall record, winning two Sunshine State Conference titles and earning two NCAA Division II National Tournament berths.

From 1988-90, Niland served as an assistant at the University of Tampa. The Spartans also won two Sunshine State Conference titles while twice appearing in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1988-89 Tampa team fi nished ranked No. 1 in the fi nal regular-season poll.

In addition to his coaching duties, Niland also served as the dean of students at Spring Hill College from 1995 to 1997. As dean of students, Niland was responsible for the division of Student Life which oversaw the departments of Residence Life, Athletics, Health Services, Student Activities, Greek Life and Intramurals. Niland also served on the President’s Cabinet.

Niland lends his coaching expertise outside of Pharr Gymnasium as he is active in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) working with the youth teams at his church, St. Dominic’s. He also coaches various AAU and youth teams. In the summer of 2008, Niland was selected as a court coach for the 2008 USA Men’s U18 National Team Trials.

Niland lives in west Mobile with his wife, Ellen, and their four children: A.J., Katelin, Jake, and Patrick.

The 2010-11 men’s basketball season will mark the University of Mobile’s fi rst season in the Southern States Athletic Conference, and the Rams will enter the challenging league with a strong base of returning players.

“We improved last year, and we expect a bigger improvement this year as we head into the tough SSAC,” Head Coach Joe Niland said. “It’s going to be a real chal-lenge, but we have two All-Conference perimeter players returning and Matthew Turner has the potential to be one of the top big men in the league.”

The season will open Nov. 1 at Tougaloo College, one of several tough non-confer-ence challenges awaiting the Rams.

“We are playing home-and-away against traditionally National Tournament level teams Xavier, Tougaloo and Life, and a very strong SUNO team,” Niland said. “That’s eight tough games right there.”

Mobile will also face Southeastern Univer-sity, who beat NCAA I affi liate Stetson, and play a pair of exhibition games against Nicholls State and South Alabama. Confer-ence play will see the Rams battling in the SSAC West Division along with Loyola, Auburn-Montgomery, Belhaven, Faulkner, Spring Hill and William Carey.

“There isn’t a break in the conference,” Niland said. “Four very tough teams came with us from the GCAC, and we are very familiar with Faulkner and AUM, having played home-and-away series with them over the years.”

Leading Mobile into the slate of challeng-ing contests will be a team centered around strong guard play, with some emerging post players hopefully providing the fi nal piece to the puzzle.

Returning on the perimeter are Spencer Duke (6-1, Jr., Pinson Valley, Ala.), Mar-cus Polnett (5-10, So., Birmingham, Ala.),

Donte Walker (6-4, Sr., Lake Charles, La.) and Ji Kimbrough (6-1, So., Mobile, Ala.).

Walker, the team’s lone senior, is only 11 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club and was an All-GCAC selection last year. As a freshman in 2007-08, Walker was named GCAC Freshman of the Year and he was a starter on the last team to ad-vance to the NAIA National Tournament. Kimbrough led the Rams with 16.3 points per game, including a 39-point outburst versus Belhaven, and joined Walker as an All-Conference selection. Duke and Pol-nett, meanwhile, were 1st and 2nd on the team in assists, and 3rd and 4th in steals, respectively.

“Guard play is defi nitely the strong suit of this team,” Niland said. “I’m excited to see what Ji can do in his second year, and we fully expect Donte to step up in a big way as a senior.”

Joining the vets in the backcourt are Dontae Amos (5-9, So., Lake Charles, La.), Jason Sanchez (5-9, Jr., Miami, Fla.), Ryan Petty (5-10, So., Mobile, Ala.), Tyler Cole (6-2, So., Geraldine, Ala.), Christian Salinas (6-3, Jr., Perth, Australia) and Bentley Hyl-ton (6-1, Jr., Westmoreland, Jamaica).

“Amos is a quick, pesky defender, while Jason Sanchez has very good fl oor vision and is a good run-the-show point guard,” Niland said. “Salinas has a very high skill level and is a good shooter, Hylton aver-aged 18 points per game at Rainy River CC, and we expect Tyler and Ryan to add depth to our team.”

While guard play is key, it will take a strong post presence to take the team deep into the 2011 postseason.

Returning post players are: Brock Dockery (6-6, Jr., Bonifay, Fla.), Matthew Turner (6-9, Jr., Melbourne, Australia) and Kevin Calloway (6-6, So., Lake Charles, La.).

In 2009-10, the trio combined for 16.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while Dockery hit 32-of-72 from three-point range. Turner shot 60% from the fl oor, while Calloway fl ashed his potential with double-doubles versus Auburn-Montgom-ery and Spring Hill.

“We have to get consistent play inside,” Niland said. “We expect big contributions from Matt; Kevin had a good freshman year; and Brock is making the move to power forward, and we expect that to help him make a bigger contribution.”

Joining that trio in the front court will be Alex Tolbert (6-8, Jr., Mobile, Ala.) and Dino Gutesa (6-7, Jr., Velika Gorica, Croatia).

“Dino is a skilled big that can play either the power forward or center spot,” Niland said. “He helps solidify the post, while Alex brings some needed depth down low.”

Fans will get 16 chances to see the Rams at home this season, with the home opener taking place Nov. 6 at 3 pm versus Vorhees College and Spring Hill visiting Jan. 27 at 7:30 pm.

Ji Kimbroug leads a group of talented guards heading into the 2010-11 season.

The University of Mobile men’s basket-ball team fi nished the 2009-10 season with a 17-11 overall record and 10-8 record in the Gulf Coast Athletic Con-ference.

The season was highlighted by a 68-64 victory at NCAA I Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 24, with heartbreak coming in the form of a 4-OT loss at William Carey University to end the season in the GCAC Quarterfi nals.

“We measure a season’s success by what you do in the postseason, and we came up short there,” Head Coach Joe Niland said. “The win over UL-Lafayette was defi nitely a big win for the program though. We had guys step up, take care of the ball better than they did, and win despite them getting 23 more free throw attempts.”

Part of the reason that the Rams failed to reach nationals was road struggles. Mobile impressed at home with a 13-2 mark, but struggled to a 4-9 record in road games, including losing the last four away contests.

“It’s always good to protect your home-court, and we did that, but we struggled on the road, and that came back to bite us,” Niland said. “I think having 11 play-ers that were freshmen or sophomores had something to do with that. We just weren’t as mentally tough as you need to be to win on the road.”

Mobile started the season with a 6-2 record in non-conference play, includ-ing taking 3-of-4 from Faulkner and Auburn-Montgomery.

That strong start did not carry over into conference play, though, as Mobile started GCAC action with a 2-5 mark. Mixed into that stretch was a 90-83 non-conference win over Life University.

“We did really well against a tough non-conference slate, getting big wins against perennial national tournament contend-ers AUM, Faulkner and Life,” Niland said. “Unfortunately, for whatever reason, our play didn’t carry over into GCAC play.”

Following back-to-back double-digit losses to LSU-Shreveport and William Carey, the Rams started a six-game win-ning streak. Mobile blasted rival Spring Hill 75-58 and beat Loyola and SUNO by a combined three points.

Halting the streak was a road loss at always-tough LSU-Shreveport, as Mobile closed out the regular season going 2-3 after the winning streak. Ji Kimbrough poured in 39 points to lead the Rams past Belhaven in the home fi nale, while Mobile dropped a 76-74 game at rival Spring Hill to close out the regular season.

“Once that winning streak starts, you almost begin to think you’re invincible, but it’s a stacked league and hard to keep

it going,” Niland said. “Our road woes really played a big part down the stretch when we were trying to position our-selves for a home game in the tourna-ment.”

Instead, Mobile was sent to William Carey, whom the Rams split with during the season. William Carey won 75-63 in Hattiesburg and Mobile won 73-58 at home.

“It was an instant classic,” Niland said. “It was a really tough way to lose the season, but our guys showed remark-able heart, going toe-to-toe with William Carey despite having seven guys foul out.”

The season marked the fi nal year in the GCAC for Mobile, while Kimbrough and Donte Walker were both honored for their play. Kimbrough was named GCAC Freshman of the Year, while Walker joined Kimbrough as a 1st-Team All-Conference selection.

Donte Walker was named All-Conference in 2009-10.

Robert Golston scored 14 points in the win over Louisiana-Lafayette.
