In 2010, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust launched its next quarter-century of

service in the Cultural District. Thanks to your support, the Trust’s transformation

of Downtown Pittsburgh continues to take shape as evidenced by the many

noteworthy mentions in this report.

In spite of difficult economic conditions, the Trust did not experience a deficit

in 2010 as a result of a rigorously managed budget. This year, the Trust raised

in excess of $11 million (compared with $8.4 million in 2009) to help finance

Trust operations, capital projects, special projects and the Cultural District

community. We extend our gratitude to Allegheny Regional Asset District,

The Benter Foundation, Citizens Bank, Cohen & Grigsby, Dollar Bank, Eden Hall

Foundation, First Commonwealth, Giant Eagle, The Heinz Endowments,

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Richard King Mellon Foundation,

Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and PNC Foundation for their generous

financial support, as well as thousands of other supporters.

Trust programming had a strong year in terms of offerings and attendance.

PNC Broadway Across America–Pittsburgh featured the Tony Award®-winning

Best Musical Revival, South Pacific, and the return of The Phantom of the

Opera for its final tour, which played to more than 86,000 patrons. Pittsburgh

Dance Council welcomed Pilobolus and Complexions, and saw a 10% increase

in subscriptions. Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater celebrated its 40th

season and hosted the International Performing Arts for Youth Showcase,

welcoming more than 400 theater professionals from around the world—

many of them first-time visitors to the Cultural District. The Trust Arts Education

Center in the James E. Rohr Building had a thriving first full year of operation,

programming a wide array of arts activities and programs for youth and adults.

The future looks bright in the Cultural District. The Trust continues to explore

new and creative ways to ensure a positive customer experience. The new

CulturalDistrict.org allows visitors to view seats in relation to the stage before

making a purchase, and patrons will be able to print tickets for shows where

it is most convenient for them. The Trust introduced ParkPGH, funded by

The Benter Foundation, which is a real-time application that helps patrons to

find available parking in the Cultural District using mobile technology devices.

Along these lines of art-meets-technology, the Trust commissioned the city’s

first public art installation on Tito Way at Liberty Avenue. Cell Phone Disco,

funded by The Fine Foundation, visualizes electromagnetic waves of mobile

phones in the piece.

By year’s end, senior management and the Board of Trustees completed the

Trust’s new Strategic Plan 2011–2013. As a result, the Trust is better prepared

to address challenges, leverage opportunities and maintain a balanced budget

with a clear vision for a vibrant, evolving arts and entertainment destination.

We hope that you will take pride in the images found in the 2010 annual report.

They reflect your investment in The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Thank you for

your patronage, financial support and belief in our work in the Cultural District.

Sincerely,

Kenneth R. Melani, M.D.
