2010 Preview 2009 was a banner year for the Park University softball program. The Pirates qualified for their first ever NAIA National Championship tournament appearance and head coach Amy Reif became the winningest coach in program history. Now the Pirates look forward to 2010 and bring in an abundance of new talent to attempt another run at the national tourney. Park will take the field in 2010 with the loss of seven starters, six of which earned All-Conference honors last year. But the Pirates do return their top pitcher from 2009 in MCAC Freshman of the Year Justine Riner and their top hitter from a year ago, Emily Calder. Reif knows how important those seniors were last year, but is very optimistic as they program progresses without them. “I don’t think we can replace the players from last year. They brought leadership and a toughness that is hard to match,” said Reif. “But I also think they left their mark on this program and laid a foundation for the younger players that is being built on everyday. Although we have few returners, those we have coming back were all key contributors on the field, but more importantly, they go about things the right way off the field and that has created a positive environment for all the newcomers. The newcomers have stepped right in and I think we have the talent to compete at a high level in the AMC and make it back to the National Tournament again this season.” Along with Riner and Calder, Park’s returns second-team all-conference performer Jennifer Cordell. Cord-ell started all 40 games for Park at first-base and hit a stellar, .328 for the Pirates. The sophomore also belted three home runs for the Pirates and was second on the team in slugging percentage. Cordell will move to short- stop in 2010 and newcomer Lisa Fitzmaurice will start at first as a freshman. Park’s only returning senior Mary Beth Bourne may also see some time at first in the coming year. Bourne has been with the softball program since 2007. “Cordell played first base last year but will be moved to short and I know she has the capability to play that position at a high level as well as play a large role offensively,” said Reif. “Freshman Lisa Fitzmaurice and our other senior, Mary Beth Bourne, have been working at 1st base. Lisa has made tremendous improvement since fall and will be another strong bat in the line up. Mary Beth is a versatile player who can play either corner and may even see some time behind the plate if Emily needs rest.” Calder will resume duties as the Pirates full-time catcher in 2010, the 5-foot-8 junior out of Olathe, Kan., led Park in many offensive categories last season including batting average, hitting a superb .440. Calder started all 40 games last season and led the squad with 59 hits and total bases with 78. Freshman Jordan Korell joins Park as an incoming freshman and will look to find sometime behind the plate at Catcher. Korell hails from St. Joseph, Mo., where she played softball at Lafayette High School. Park will have some new faces at the other two positions in the infield as well, junior transfer Brittany Hess looks to take the starting spot at third base and transfers Jenn Tanno and Lindsay Bowers are battling it out for the starting nod at second. “Transfer Brittany Hess is a versatile player but seems to have found a home at 3rd, she works extremely hard and will bring a lot of power in the middle of our line up,” said Reif. “Transfers Jenn Tanno and Lindsay Bowers have been working at second base for us. Tanno has the ability to really swing the bat and may be seeing action in the DP role. Bowers is one of two seniors on the team and despite being a transfer student, she has stepped into a leadership role because of her attitude and willingness to give 100% constantly.” Hess transferred to Park from Johnson County Community College, while Tanno transferred in from Hutchinson Community College and Bowers comes to Park from NCAA Division II, Emporia State Univer-sity. The outfield will feature a whole new set of starters this season, Park does return Brittany Dortch to the lineup who showed some strong signs on the defensive side of the field last season. Dortch appeared in eight games a year ago with six starts. Four newcomers will join Dortch in the mix for the three starting spots includ-ing freshmen Mallory Jansen, Hannah Alpers and Kyla Tatum, along with transfer Mandi Dennis. “Jansen and Dennis bring speed and also hit from the left side of the plate which will be a big part of our offense,” Reif said. “Dennis will be playing center field and quite frankly is one of the best overall players Park has seen in a uniform and Tatum came to Park as an infielder but has proven herself as a hitter and assistant coach Steve Tingler and I feel like we need to find a spot in the lineup for her. She has responded really well and is doing better defensively than expected. Hannah is a freshman that suffered a shoulder injury in the fall but has rehabbed diligently and will be back in full force for the spring.” Park is very fortunate to have a majority of its pitching staff back for the 2010 season. Veteran Brittany Johnson returns for Park with her 18 career wins and enters her third season for the Pirates. Justine Riner had an incredible 2009 for Park, with her 14-7 record and outstanding 1.83 ERA. Riner also picked up 102 strikeouts in 141.1 innings pitched. Freshman Megan Walker looks to fill the third spot in the Pirates starting rotation this year, the 5-8 fresh-man from Grant City, Mo. has really impressed the coaching staff. “The pitchers as a whole have worked extremely hard and it has showed over our first couple weeks of spring practice,” Reif said. “We are getting a lot more live at bats this year which I think is helping both our hitters and pitchers, but our pitchers are way ahead of the game compared to last year. Out of the three Riner has a lot to live up to because she received pitcher of the year honors in the conference last season but it will be the second time around for hitters to see her, so she will have to work that much harder against them. Megan is a consummate worker and will definitely see innings this season as a freshman. If she works ahead of batters and gets a handle on her change up she will be a great addition to this staff. Brittany will need to play a bigger role this season and with the attitude she’s displayed thus far, I think she’s looking forward to doing that.”

Justine Riner (above) and Brittany Johnson (below) will be a talented 1-2 punch in the rotation for the Pirates as they begin the 2010 season.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar founda-tions to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member insti-tutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recog-nizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institu-tions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmo-sphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportuni-ty and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administra-tor is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at near-ly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde-pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are commit-ted to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: re-spect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Amy Reif not only led the 2009 Park University softball team to its first NAIA National Tournament in the history of the program, Reif also became Park’s all-time winningest

coach for the Pirates in 2009 with a career record of 86-83. Reif ’s Pirates had a season for the ages winning the 2009 MCAC Tournament Championship for the first time and posted a solid 27-13 record on the year. The Pirates also fared well in the NAIA Softball National Championship going 1-2 in the Tournament, defeating Hastings College, 6-1, while only losing, 2-0, to eventual national cham-pion, California Baptist. The 2008 MCAC Coach of the Year led the Pirates to one of their most successful seasons, guiding the Pirates to a 10-2 conference record and a 23-23 overall mark in ‘08. Park earned its first MCAC Regular Season championship in its history and came within one game of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament. In the 2007 season, Reif led the Pirate softball team to an overall record of 18-28 and finished 7-7 in the MCAC. Park concluded its 2007 season appearing in post-season action in the MCAC Tournament. This was the second time in school history that the softball team participated in the tournament. Despite suffering early elimination in the tournament, Reif produced eight players who re-ceived conference recognition. One player earned All-MCAC first-team honors, four players earned second-team honors and three players were honorable mention. Two players were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes for their work in the classroom. Reif came to Park with more than seven years of experience as a player and assistant coach at NCAA Division I Auburn University. She served as a full-time assistant coach at Auburn for three and a half seasons, including the 2002 campaign when she was a member of the NCAA South Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2002, Auburn qualified for the school’s first NCAA Regional with a 37-28 overall record and a 15-15 mark in the Southeastern Conference. During Reif ’s tenure at AU as a full-time assistant (2000-04) and one season as a graduate assistant (1999-2000), the Tigers reached the 30-win plateau on three occasions. As a player, Reif spent three seasons as an infielder at Auburn for head coach Tina Deese (1996-99) and still ranks among the school’s career leaders in sacrifice hits (2nd, 28). As a junior, she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for her efforts in the classroom. A native of Kansas City, Kan., she started her playing career at Johnson County (Kan.) Com-munity College in 1994, where she played one season, earning first-team all-conference honors. Reif, who worked at ESPN as a production assistant before coming to Park, received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Auburn in 1998, before obtaining her master’s degree in communications from AU in 2000. Amy and her husband, Derek, who played baseball at Auburn from 1997-2000, have two sons, Storm and Cash.

2009 NAIA National Tournament Run

The magical 2009 postseason began at the MCAC Tournament championship in Bellevue, Neb., where the Pirates had to win three games in two days as the tournament’s No. 2 seed. That meant beating perennial MCAC Champion and No. 1 seeded Bellevue University. Park began the tourney on a cold dreary April 30 afternoon by defeating College of Saint Mary, 7-2, with a huge game from freshman Jenn Cordell. Cordell went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a big two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Park then defeated Bellevue, 5-2, later that day to put themselves in prime position for a Conference championship. But they still had to beat Bellevue at least one more time the next day on May 1.

Despite losing to Bellevue, 3-1, in game one. Park stormed back to beat the Buins, 7-6, in an epic game to capture its first ever MCAC Tournament championship and qualfied for its first ever NAIA National Championship Tournament appearance. Jamie Garman got the start for the Pirates in the final conference tournament game and went 1 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs, while facing 10 batters. Freshman ace Justine Riner came in relief in the bottom of the second inning and began to retire the Bruins one after the other.

Riner had some help on the offensive side of the ball, as Park strung together 13 hits and got three RBI’s from centerfielder Kristen Hansen. The Pirates had plenty of reason to celebrate after its classic conference tournament championship but still had a long way to go in the postseason as they prepared for their first National Tournament appearance and first time trip to Decatur, Ala., and the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

2009 NAIA National Tournament Run

One day before competition in its first ever NAIA National Tournament, the Park University softball team spent an afternoon bowling with many Special Olympi-ans from a local organization. The 15 member team put on their bowling shoes at the AMF River City Lanes in Decatur, Ala. The event was part of “Giving Back to Decatur”, an NAIA Champions of Character program that teams were given a chance to participate in. “The kids we bowled with had so much fun”, sophomore Nicole Wilson said. “Whether they bowled a one or a ten it was always a strike for them and that was really great to see.”

The Park Softball team enjoyed its time at the NAIA National Championship tournament, they were given the chance to take a tour of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration in Huntsville, Ala. The kickoff banquet also took place at the Davidson Center.

Park was one of 32 teams that participated in the 2009 NAIA Softball Nation-al Championship tournament and took part in the opening ceremonies on the first day of the tournament. All 32 teams paraded around one of the middle fields at the beautiful Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

The Pirates went 1-2 in the NAIA National Tournament, losing to Friends University, 6-5, in game one of the tourney and lost a hard fought game against the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament, Cali-fornia Baptist, 2-0. CBU eventually won the 2009 NAIA Softball National Championship. But the Pirates prevailed on day three of the tourney by defeating Hastings College, 6-1. Jamie Garman (pic-tured above) picked up the win for the Pirates. Making her the only pitcher in the history of the program to win a game in an National Tournament.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city.

With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows stu-dents the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early develop-ment of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cit-ies of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards, and the Kansas Speedway, which is host to several NASCAR events throughout the year in-cluding one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is home to the Kansas City T-Bones minor league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light District, which opened last fall and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertainment districts. In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kan-sas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and midway through January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.
