Don’s love for Ireland is deep, personal, and legendary. And he has ensured that it was no empty vessel. Through so many initiatives, business and personal, he has ensuredthe flowing of practical, tangible benefits to Ireland.

– Mary McAleese, President of Ireland

Of all the people I know,Don Keough moves me up the most. He has anoptimistic view of me andwhat I am, to the extent that he raises my sights andmakes me believe more in myself and the worldaround me. I wish everybody had this talent, but I know nobody whohas it better than him.

– Warren Buffett

What truly makes Donald Keough stand out ishis integrity. When Don tells you something youcan bank on it. He always does the right thing.

Don and his wife Mickie at AshfordCastle in 2006 with 16 of their 18 grandchil-dren (two could not make the trip becauseof school). Don’s parents, Veronica and Leo,on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Don, whose family roots lie in County Wexford – where the Keoughs were the hereditary bards to the rulingMacMurrough Kavanagh dynasty – has been a dynamic, vigorous and visionary presence in American life for over half a century, but he has also been a dynamic catalyst in Irish America, supporting Irish business, education and culture.

marriage, you get along to go along, you have difficulties, spats, but youhave to sit down and say we aregoing to work this out.”

Waking Up the IrishEchoes

It is typical of the prescience ofDon Keough that after a career incorporate America, he turned to aventure of a different kind, one thatwould pay tribute to the land of hisancestors.

When he retired as president andCOO of Coca-Cola in 1993 (he wouldretain a seat on the board of directors),Don turned his focus to Notre Dame and, with an endowment of $2.5 million, established the Keough Institute of IrishStudies, and the Keough Notre DameCentre in Dublin, Ireland.

“Notre Dame didn’t have any type ofacademic Irish Studies program. It justseemed like a natural fit to me,” Keoughsaid at the time.

Since then, with Don driving it on, andbacked by Andy McKenna and PatrickMcCartan, his friends and successors asChair of the Trustees, Irish Studies atNotre Dame has gone from strength tostrength, attracting world-class scholarssuch as Seamus Deane, Breandán ÓBuachalla and Declan Kiberd. Don alsoforged a close partnership with MartinNaughton, insisting that for an Irish-American partnership to work properly,it had to have a balanced leadership.

From the beginning, Don Keoughwisely insisted that Notre Dame couldonly forge a strong relationship withIreland through a genuine immersion in

Irish life, and through close collaborationwith Irish partners. Notre Dame operatesa trilateral partnership with UniversityCollege Dublin and Trinity CollegeDublin, and almost one thousand NotreDame students have studied there. Theirpositive Irish experience encouragesthem to become what Don Keough hasalways been – a lifelong advocate forIreland. It is typical of Don’s vision thathe was so quick to realize how signifi-cant the nurturing of these linkageswould become.

Don has always stressed that, as weseek to enrich other people’s lives, wereally enrich ourselves, and that thatmotivation lies at the heart of all philan-thropy. That is the true measure of acharismatic man who has greatly impact-ed thousands of lives, who has broughtwise counsel, good humor, vigor andmomentum to strengthening the relation-ship between Ireland and America, andwho has enriched us all through his gen-erous leadership. Don Keough has aunique ability to make people feel valuedand appreciated, and to spur them on in

their endeavors. An old Irish proverb says

“Beidh sé molta da mbéadhmé i mo thost” (‘He would bepraised even if I were silent’).

When he was granted Irishcitizenship in 2007, thePresident of Ireland, MaryMcAleese, presented Donwith a vellum inscription

which included a phrase from the Book ofSirach, chosen by Don’s good friend Fr.Timothy Scully CSC:

“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter:He who finds one finds a treasure.”

For all those who know, love, admireand are inspired by this great man, DonKeough has surely been a ‘sturdy shelter’and when you are with him, you areindeed in the presence of an Americanand an Irish treasure.

There is no one we would rather visit Ireland with than Don Keough. It is like coming home. He is the shepherd and we are his sheep. It is great to be in the flock! He has a greatunderstanding of the country, its people, its history, its customs and its culture.

– Andrew J. McKenna, Chairman of McDonald’s and Owner and Chairman of Schwarz Paper Co.

Don is regarded by somany Americans of Irish heritage as the #1 representative of IrishAmerica. He does so much for so many includingNotre Dame, but his largesshas gone far beyond that.

William Flynn, Chairman Emeritus, Mutual of America.

Don Keough has always been in my Hall of Fame. One of my first trips to Ireland was with Bill Flynn and Don Keough. Could anyone get a better introduction to the Emerald Isle?Let’s all raise a glass in honor of a true Irish gentleman and, now, the first recipient of IrishAmerica magazine’s Hall of Fame Award!

– Tom Moran, Chairman, President & CEO, Mutual of America

Donald Keough receiving anhonorary degree from NotreDame president Fr. Hesbergin 1985. It is a measure ofDon’s standing that both ofNotre Dame’s partner univer-sities, TCD and UCD, haveconferred honorary doctor-ates on him.

“Ireland is going througha tough period. It’s had aheady twenty years. We’ve had that in thiscountry, but the sizes ofour countries are differ-ent. In a place like Ireland, every person who made amistake – well, everyonein the neighborhoodknows it….They are goingthrough a period of deepembarrassment. They’relashing out at each other, trying to come to termswith the issue. But weknow the Irish. There willbe a day – and, Mr.Ambassador, the sooner the better – when they decide todeal with it. When they will decide to, together, confrontthis issue, to do what is necessary, and to begin to thinkabout a new Ireland. An incredible Ireland – this specialplace with this special population. We should be beginningto think about what the new Ireland is going to look like. And everyone in this room, to the extent that they can behelpful, should do their best to help this country.

You know, the real members of the Hall of Fame are theparents and grandparents and great-grand-parents and great-great-grandparents whohad the courage to come here. So to the honorees of the Business 100, I congratulateyou, but to everyone in this room, let me sayThank God that we’re lucky enough to haveIrish blood streaming through us and to havethe privilege of calling ourselves Americans.America needs some optimism, too. So, tothe leaders in the room, let’s be the mission-aries of optimism.

I am grateful to my associates and friendswho are here: to Father Scully, FatherMcGraw and Father McNamee. My family is

here: five of my children –the parents of sixteengrandchildren – I amproud of all of them, andmy wife Mickie, who hasput up with me all throughthese years and been mypartner.

Of course I’d love toacknowledge everybody inthis room but I can’t. AnneSweeney, congratulationsto you on the brilliant jobyou’ve done at Disney;I’ve followed your careerwith joy. To Cathie Black:Cathie, you’ve beenthrough a tough two

weeks, but the public school system in this city will belucky to have you [as Schools Chancellor]. To my associates at Coca-Cola Company, thank you for everything ... It’s been a privilege to be your colleaguethrough these years. To Andy McKenna, the chairman ofthe board; to all the trustees who are here, and to the representatives from the University [of Notre Dame], thankyou. And to each one of you, thank you very much andGod bless all of you.”

Irish America magazine’s 25th annual Business 100 luncheon, held on November 30th at The New York Yacht Club inManhattan, brought together national and international leaders from every sector of the business community. The celebration also marked the induction of Donald R. Keough into the newly formed Irish America Hall of Fame. Keough ischairman of Allen and Company and former president, COO and diretor of Coca-Cola. He was the driving force behind theIrish Studies programs at Notre Dame and its sister school in Dublin, and led several trade missions to Ireland. In recognitionof his great accomplishments Keough was celebrated with speeches from Kevin Whelan, director of the Notre Dame KeoughCentre in Dublin and Irish Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Collins. “That sense of home and belonging,I believe, is inherent in being Irish.”

20 IRISH AMERICA FEBRUARY / MARCH 2011

W e represent a broad spec-trum of business andindustry in this room andthe one thing that I know

we all have in common is our wonderfulIrish heritage.

I’ve come to realize that that feeling ofhome and that sense of belonging, beingwelcomed with open arms, just has to beIrish. No matter how far you’ve traveledor how long you’ve been away, it sticks. And I think it starts when you’re born. You’re welcomed into the world with awonderful embrace from everyone whocame before you, everyone who will be apart of you, and they want you to knowthat you are loved and you’re somethingspecial.

In my home I have a letter that’sframed and mounted on my wall that mygrandparents wrote to my parents on theday that I was born. It’s a tough one toread so I’ll cut to the chase on the partthat I think resonates the most for all ofus in this room. They wrote: “I’ll betyou’re very happy with your new charge. It will be very interesting for you to liveout your lives giving everything for thecomfort and advancement of your fami-ly, and most of the pleasure will comewhen you have to deprive yourselves ofsome comforts to afford their desires.”The spirit and the promise of that letterhave prevailed throughout my lifebecause everyone in my family isreferred to as “our.” “Our Anne.” “OurDonald.” “Our Rosemary.” I grew upthinking that “our” was one of our fami-ly names that just got passed along andwas applied to everyone namedSweeney. It wasn’t until I was older thatI realized it was a possessive, it was a

claim on each of us so we knew we werepart of the family – connected and insep-arable from one other. And it wasn’t untilmuch later that I truly understood thepower of that claim: that whenever anyof us are together, wherever that happensto be, we’re home.

My husband and I are both from Irishfamilies and we now live a good 3,000miles away from our parents and a longway from our siblings and other rela-tives. Our children are grown now too.Our son Christopher is living on his ownand our daughter Rosemary is thousandsof miles away at college. But when weget together in any combination, to cele-brate any occasion – and the Irish cele-brate every occasion extremely well –we’re home, in a way that’s hard todescribe to anyone not blessed by thatIrish tradition.

My husband’s grandmother wasfrom Dingle, which means two veryimportant things. First, he claimed hisIrish citizenship, which he proudly didjust a few weeks before I spoke at theIrish America [Business 100] event in1998, and I remember bragging a littlebit about that in my speech that year.He officially became an Irishman andBill and I took the children to Dingleto see where his grandmother wasfrom. Well, my husband’s grandmoth-er was the eldest of nineteen children –nineteen! – one of whom was actuallyborn after his grandmother moved tothe United States, so she didn’t get tomeet her youngest sibling until shewas in her 70s. Now, it was anextremely large family then and it’seven larger now, a couple of genera-tions later. But the first day in town we

were standing in a restaurant and justhappened to run into two of his aunts andfour of his cousins who were visitingfrom the U.S. And when I asked them ifthey knew how we could get in touchwith any of the cousins in Dingle theygave me this blank look and they told meto just go out and stand on the sidewalk. And by the way, if you happen to be aFitzgerald or a McLoughlin from Dingle, you are welcome to our house for dinnerany time.

My father’s family, the Sweeneys, arefrom a village in Co. Mayo. My moth-er’s family, the O’Connells from Co.Kerry, and her father’s family, theTormays, emigrated from a thatched cot-tage in Kells, Co. Meath. My widowedgreat-great-grandmother put three of hernine children on a boat to America to livewith relatives in Pennsylvania. My great-

Our Anne Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney-ABC Television Group, gave a

grandfather, Hugh Tormay, wasjust thirteen when he made thattrip, leading his six-year-oldbrother and his four-year-oldsister into the unknown. WhenI thought about how muchcourage it took for those kidsand the incredible sacrificetheir mother made to give theman opportunity for a better life,I realized it wasn’t unique toour family. It was just one ofthe countless stories of Irishemigration to the new world.Hugh Tormay and his siblingswere just three of more thanone million people who leftIreland during the mid-nine-teenth century. And Ireland’seconomic downturns in the 30sand the 50s and the 80s sentmore people far from home.

According to an economicsprofessor from Trinity College in Dublin, emigrating is a cultural norm, even if it’snot a preference. The Irish know how todo it: they build networks and they takecare of each other. In light of Ireland’seconomic crisis, another generation isbeginning to scatter across the globe. Andrecently, I’m sure you saw, the New YorkTimes discussed this recent wave of Irish

emigration, 65,000 peo-ple left the country lastyear and they estimatethat another 125,000 mayfollow them this year.I’m sure they’re going tocome back. The article

also highlighted how Irish parents aredrawing strength and support from eachother, as their children start new liveselsewhere out of economic desperation.Unlike my great-great-grandmother, kiss-ing her children goodbye and wonderingif she’d ever see them again, I’m hopefulthat this time technology will step in –phones, e-mail, Facebook and Skype –

and enable families to stay incloser contact and give us anew way to communicate thegreat culture of Ireland astheir children embark on newjourneys.

But it’s hard. It’s hardenough to send your kids outinto the world toward their pas-sions and ambitions. Watchingthem go even though theydon’t want to, but because theyhave no other choice, has to bedevastating for everyoneinvolved. But I have to wonderif this constant history of so

many hearts and homes broken in half byemigration only deepens our devotion tothe Irish family and makes it so important– and easy – for us to come home whenev-er and wherever we come together.

However it came to be, that sense ofhome and belonging, I believe, is inherentin being Irish. For me it’s in the storiesthat have been passed down through theyears and it’s one of the many things Igave thanks for last Thursday [onThanksgiving]. And I thank you, forinviting me to come home to the IrishAmerica Business 100. It’s an honor to beincluded and it’s a true privilege to bewith you today.
