A Christmas Wish

SATB a cappella

Anonymous text

Music by Ann MacDonald Diers

Our thoughts go out this Christmas to all hearts everywhere. For some are sad, though some are glad,

And some are filled with care. May every heart have courage, let peace and love abide.

May all of us care for each one this blessed Christmastide.

A Fly on the Wall

SATB and piano

Lyrics by William MacDuff

Music by

Roger Bourland

Within a stable many years ago, A common fly took refuge from the snow.

And there, among the animals, it saw A man and woman huddled in the straw.

“The woman’s time is close at hand, I fear, By dawn we’ll have another guest in here,”

Said the fly on the wall of a stable in Bethlehem.

And then, as if by plan, the stunning change began. By light of one, amazing star, the birth of Man.

A multitude of creatures came by day To greet the new arrival in the hay.

The common fly was drawn to him some-how And helped to clean the baby's tiny brow.

“This seems an awful fuss for just one child,”

The fly complained until the baby smiled At the fly on the wall of a stable in Bethlehem.

A rich, well-travelled king, for fear the fly might sting,

Was quick to flick the fly away, the fly took wing.

The fly continued on its lonely way, But there were those who swore they heard it say:

“In all my thirty days upon the earth, I’ve seen no greater miracle than birth! Before you condescend to one like me, Imagine first how blessed I was to be,

just a fly on the wall in a stable in Bethlehem."

All Hayle to the Days

SATB a cappella

Traditional English Carol

arranged by Elizabeth Norton

All hayle to the days that merit more praise than all the rest of the year, and welcome the nights, that double delights as well for the poor as the peer:

Good fortune attend each merry man's friend that doth but the best that he may, Forgetting old wrongs with Carrols and Songs to drive the cold winter away.

Thus none will allow of solitude now, but merrily greets the time,

To make it appear of all the whole year that this is accounted the Prime. December is seen apparel'd in green and January, fresh as May,

Comes dancing along with a cup or a Song to drive the cold winter away.

This time of the yeare is spent in good cheer, kind neighbors together to meet. To sit by the fire, with friendly desire each other in love to greet: Old grudges forgot are put in a pot, all sorrows aside they lay;

The old and the young doth carrol this Song, to drive the cold winter away.

When Christmas tide comes in like a Bride, with Holly and Ivy clad, Twelve dayes in the year much mirth and good cheer in every household is had:

The Countrey guise is then to devise some gambols of Christmas play; Whereas the young men do best that they can to drive the cold winter away.

Mary’s First Lullaby

SATB and cello or piano accompaniment

Music and text by Jonathan Santore

For nine long months I’ve waited dear,

And I’m so glad you’re finally here! But Mommy heard the strangest thing

And angel said you’d be a king. They’ll sing hosanna from the rooftops,

They’ll sing hosanna to the skies. I sing hosanna for the mother love

Shining in your open eyes. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna!

Your cousin leapt up in the womb

When you and I walked in the room. So much that I can’t figure out.

Your entire foot fits in my mouth! They’ll sing hosanna for the healing,

They’ll sing hosanna for the light. I sing hosanna for your tiny hands,

And the joy I feel this night. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna!

You’ll like it there in Nazareth.

Back home we’ll get to catch our breath! There’s things to learn, and games to play.

And hugs until you go away. They’ll sing hosanna for your calling,

They’ll sing hosanna for the sign. I sing hosanna for these precious years

And the time that you are mine. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna!

These Holidays!

SATB a cappella

Music and lyrics by

Michael Davis

These holidays need a little o’ that old fashioned music. These holidays need a little o’ that rhythm and harmony. Cold wind and gray skies will get you down if they can,

Oh, until the music puts the wonder back into the Winter Wonderland! These holidays need a little music, yes they do.

Snow storms and cloudy days try to get the best of you. So join the chorus and strike up the band,

And let the sweet music put the wonder back into the Winter Wonderland!

We don’t need more fancy clothes, or shiny ribbons and bright red bows. We’ve got all the pretty decorations anyone could ever need!

We don’t need more mistletoe or tons of presents from a store. When you’ve got something real, it’s something you can feel!

These holidays need a little more singing in harmony. Sweeten the way we get together with friends and family.

Ring out the bells and beat the drums if you can, And let the sweet music put the wonder back into the Winter Wonderland!

I just hate to think how it would be without caroling in four part harmony,

Without a song in your heart and a dance stirring in your feet! We don’t need more diamond rings or any other such expensive things.

We’ve got something real nobody’s ever gonna steal. These holidays need a little more singing in harmony.

Sweeten the way we get together with friends and family. Ring out the bells and beat the drums if you can,

And let the sweet music put the wonder back into the Winter Wonderland!

This Holiday

SAB and Piano

Lyrics and music by Steve Milloy

Life is full of everyday struggles that try to distract us from a higher call

but with each December we gather together to try and make sense of it all.

This human condition, whatever you believe in, is not meant for suffering and war.

Be at peace, spread joy,

share the love this holiday!

Step on up and help another. Inspire a sense of hope along the way.

You don’t need a reason, for now 'tis the season to show some good will through each day.

With more that unites us, why must we divide us by race or religion or creed?

Be at peace, spread joy,

share the love this holiday!

Coming in July…

The Krampus

(An International Ethnographic Special)

For SATB, piano and narrator

Text and music by Charles Baker

The Krampus [KRAHM-poos] is a mythological being associated with Saint Nicholas, mostly in Austria, Hungary and nearby areas. Similar figures with other names - Knecht Ruprecht, Klaubauf, Pelznickel - are known in other parts of Europe. Images of the Krampus were popular as greeting cards. This piece requires that a variety of these images, or similar ones newly created, be displayed for the audience - either projected, or printed large. If possible, there should also be images for station identification (KWIR-TV), funding providers (AIC, San Monto Corp.), and the International Ethnographic Society. There are two possible endings, A and B. Ending A requires a fully-costumed Saint Nicholas (not Santa Claus) in bishop's miter and robes, and a fully-costumed Krampus. Ending B requires a laptop computer. The Announcer and the Random Voice should be voiceovers, not present on stage. Dr. Edwin Fedwin, upon entering, stands at a lectern with a large, heavy book and a stack of greeting cards. He both reads prepared text (in italics) and makes off-the-cuff remarks (plain text). Dr. Fedwin is a mythological being. Any resemblance to actual persons living or dead is their problem. ANNOUNCER: [station ID image] From KWIR-TV in Morality Falls. Funding for the following commercial-free program has been provided by: [image] The American Immaturity Council -- exploring alternatives to healthy psychological development, [image] And by San Monto Corporation, discovering short-term profits in long-term problems, And by viewers like you. RANDOM OTHER VOICE: Like me? ANNOUNCER: Yes, you! And now, [theme starts; image] a special presentation of the International Ethnographic Society, with your host Doctor Edwin Fedwin… Would you like to be notified as soon as this piece is available? Please send an e-mail to [email protected]. Thank you!
