When we founded the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation in memory of our daughter Lauren, we wanted it to reflect her strength of character, compassion and her love of family.

We envisioned an organization serving not only as a resource and advocate for women, but as a champion for their families as well.

Since its inception in 2000 the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation has touched the lives of thousands of women and their families through the Women’s Scholarship Program, which has awarded more than 300 scholarships to income-eligible head-of-household women, and the Mothers

Matter gift basket project that has distributed more than 15,000 Mother’s Day gift baskets to special and needy mothers.

Our new Emergency Grant Assistance Program helps mothers and their families facing critical and urgent emergencies that cannot be met through any government or agency help. Such as the mother of a special needs child who was abandoned by her husband last year and has been struggling to get help for her son and keep up with household bills. She needed LRAF assistance to help pay car maintenance and insurance so she could continue working and taking her son to necessary therapy and medical appointments.

We are committed to doing the right thing for women in need; that’s what we’ve done from the beginning. It’s what Lauren would have wanted us to do.

My family and I are forever grateful for the kindness, generosity and friendship of the many wonderful and dear men, women and children that have touched our lives through the Foundation. We are truly blessed to have your love and support.

Susan Rose

2010 Lauren Rose“Legacy of Love, Laughter &

Light Award”The Lauren Rose Legacy of Love, Laughter and Light Award recognizes individuals for their dedication to honoring Lauren’s memory and ensuring that Lauren’s Legacy continues to make a real difference in the lives of women facing difficult challenges.

The first Lauren Rose award was presented in 2007 to Lisa Moriarty. Claire Carmody and Steve McBride were the 2008 and 2009 recipients. The selection of each year’s honoree is determined by prior Lauren Rose award winners. This year the committee selected two individuals for their dedication to the Foundation, commitment to its Mission and true spirit of volunteerism; each can always be counted on to help wherever needed with a dependability, good spirit and gentle kindness.

As the poet George Elliston said, “How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it” — our Lauren Rose Award recipients make every day beautiful!

2009 “Lauren Rose” recipient Steve McBride is presented the award by LRAF President Susan Rose (far left) and prior award winners Claire Carmody (second from right) and Lisa Moriarty (far right).

KIMBERLY“You need certain things in your life in order to succeed,” Kimberly said, “and the most important is education.” Growing up, she wasn’t encouraged to pursue higher education and now realizes that in order to “do better for myself and my son and to set a good example for him,” earning her degree is a necessity.

She’s currently facing many challenges. Recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, she works full-time, takes two or three

college courses a semester and is raising a two year-old son on her own. She has also assumed responsibility for her 18 year-old sister, who lives with her and is also pursuing a degree at Cumberland County College. She hopes for a career in child psychology or social work.

She’s grateful for the LRAF scholarship because “it doesn’t seem there are a lot of scholarships available in this field. “I was so excited when I learned it had been awarded to me.”

KATGetting top grades at Rowan University is very important to Kat as she pursues dual degrees in writing and education. “Success validates my effort and makes all the sacrifice worthwhile,” she said. She dreams of becoming a writer as well as making a difference by pursuing a career in education. This will give her an opportunity to have the same schedule as her young son once he enters school. With an article recently published in South Jersey Mom magazine, she is making progress toward both goals.

Her son inspired her to change her life and return to Rowan, where she had been enrolled ten years earlier but never completed her degree. “It’s important for me and my son that I finish what I started,” Kat said. A recipient of three scholarships this semester, she saves the letters to someday show her son.

The Lauren Rose Albert Foundation provides recognition, encouragement and support to help women achieve their dream of a better future through education.

We are pleased to highlight the personal stories of six LRAF Women’s Scholarship Recipients as they overcome

difficult challenges. Since 2004, the LRAF has awarded more than 300 scholarships to deserving women.

KIMOne reason Kim decided to further her education was to become an exceptional role model to her seven year-old son. She wants him to understand the importance of education and she also hopes to “give him more of an opportunity than I had.”

She’s well on her way as a nursing student at Cumberland County College, where she was awarded a summer externship in a very competitive application process. Following her successful externship as a nursing aide at Vineland Regional Medical Center, she’s already been offered a full-time nursing position once she receives her RN degree in May 2011.

Her clinical rotation in the Maternal Health Department was the most rewarding and enjoyable. “All the new mothers are so happy and as a mother myself, I really felt I could help them by teaching them how to care for their babies.”

Returning to school, being awarded the LRAF Book Scholarship and the summer externship was all very timely for Kim because she was laid off from her full-time job in sales support in March. But her future is looking much more hopeful now thanks to the opportunities she’s received in the last six months.

The LRAF Book Scholarship is a substantial help to Kim as her education required a total of fourteen new books this semester. “You just don’t realize how much this scholarship can help until you really do need it,” she said. “I was so relieved to be awarded the LRAF scholarship.”

NATASHAThe challenge of raising three children on her own, particularly during their turbulent adolescent years, is what led Natasha to seek a career working with troubled teenagers. She hopes to be able to help young people who “society has given up on,” especially those who are not able to function in a regular classroom setting.

Natasha has set clear goals for herself — complete her Associate’s Degree in Human Services at Burlington County College, then pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at Rutgers University and finish with a Master’s Degree in Education.

She now understands the importance of education and realizes that the necessary sacrifices are well worth the end result. “If I had known 20 years ago what I know now, I would have a Ph.D. by now. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to realize you have to have an education.” Natasha was working in real estate when the economic downturn hit full force and she realized she had to return to school.

She’s setting a wonderful example for her three children — a daughter, 24, who just received her nursing degree, another daughter, age 17 and a son, age 11. “I almost gave up the first semester but I finally realized that I could make it.”

Natasha was “ecstatic” when she found out she had been awarded an LRAF Book Scholarship. She looks at the award letter every day for encouragement and motivation. She hopes that some day she too will be able to give back to society and help people the way the Foundation has assisted her.

ALLISONAs a result of the LRAF book scholarship, “I don’t have to deny my kids something they really need,” Allison said gratefully. ”I danced around my house when I learned I had been awarded these funds!”

Allison has turned adversity into adventure as she pursues higher education for the first time. Laid off after 14 years in her position, she found there were only temporary jobs available for someone with her credentials. So, she enrolled as a full-time student at Rowan University,

working to earn a degree in History. Once she receives her B.A. in May 2011, she hopes to enroll in the University’s 18-month program for a Master’s in Education. Ultimately, she would like to become a teacher for grades K-5.

A mother of three children, ages 19, 15 and 9, “I tell my children to go to college right after high school, it’s so much easier.” Her oldest son has heeded her advice and is pursuing a degree in accounting. Allison admits though, that she probably appreciates the education she is receiving now so much more than she would have when she was young.

Making friends on the Glassboro campus has been difficult because of her age, as has been getting used to doing homework, but she has learned to overcome these challenges as she keeps her sights on a better future for herself and her family.

YVONNEYvonne refuses to be intimidated by the challenge of continuing her education at age 57. She was inspired to do so by two individuals — her eldest son who also has returned to school, and President Obama, who suggested that older Americans continue their educations in order to improve their employment prospects.

She’s not a stranger to life’s challenges. She raised three sons (now ages 31, 21, and 19) entirely on her own. An 11th grade drop-out, she later went back when her third son was

young and earned her GED. “My son went to daycare and I went to school at the same time and earned my high school degree,” Yvonne said. “Now we are both going back to school again!” A family currently immersed in education, her middle son has also recently enrolled and plans to become an English teacher.

Because she is fascinated by the solar power world, Yvonne plans to pursue a career in the renewable energy field and is currently enrolled at Burlington County College as a Liberal Arts major. She conducted an extensive amount of research before making her career plans and she’s especially intrigued by the environmental impact of the growing field.

During the school year, she also works as a school bus driver, and she really enjoys getting to know the students who ride her bus. “I have a great rapport with the children,” she said.

Yvonne’s proud of her accomplishments thus far and looks forward to a brighter future through education. She found the process of writing the essay for the LRAF Book Scholarship to be particularly inspirational and cathartic. “It allowed me to put my emotions down on paper and also to evaluate my educational and career goals.”

“The cost of books would be one thing standing in the way of my education and I am very grateful that the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation has provided me with this Scholarship.”
