I have a few brief remarks. It has been a long journey for us. I have a few brief remarks.It has been a long journey for us. Over the past decade, we learned valuable

lessons about equity and inclusivity … as well as the meaning of the phrase …“celebrate diversity.”

The operative word, atleast for us, is “celebrate.”

That requires a bit ofbackground about diversity.Iowa is one of the most ho-mogenous states in theUnion. Consider these statis-tics: In 2010, there weremore white people over theage of 100 in Iowa―846, tobe exact―than these under-represented groups whotook the ACT: African-Ameri-cans, 583; Hispanic/Latino,700; Asian/Pacific Islanders,537; and American Indian, 81.

While AEJMC members in the twilight of their careers are morelikely to think about their legacies than members starting theiracademic careers, an AEJMC legacy is something all of us shouldthink about regardless of the career stage we’re in. In fact,there’s no better time to think about legacies than the start of anew school year when we’re putting the finishing touches on ourcourse syllabi, updating our CV’s for our annual reports, andplanning our research agendas and service for the upcomingyear.

One’s legacy reveals itself in the students we mentor; the theo-ries we propose; the peer-reviewed research we present at con-ferences, publish in journals, and write in books; and the servicewe perform in our departments, universities, and AEJMC divi-sions, interest groups, commissions and standing and appointedcommittees. While a legacy is traditionally thought of in terms ofwhat is given to others, it is important to remember that AEJMCmembers who have come before us have contributed to thelegacies that we will pass on.

For example, Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, who was the recipientof the 2014 Lionel C. Barrow Jr. Award for DistinguishedAchievement in Diversity Research and Education, recognizedLee Barrow in her remarks at the Business Meeting not just be-cause he was the award’s namesake but because of the differ-ence he made in her life. A visionary who became a legend inAEJMC, Dr. Barrow, who was the first dean of Howard Univer-sity’s School of Communications, not only founded the MAC Di-vision but he helped shape AEJMC’s long-standing commitmentto diversity. In fact, Dr. Barrow’s AEJMC legacy is so importantthat two separate AEJMC awards are named in his honor. Oneaward is for faculty and the other award is for doctoral students.

As the recipient of the Barrow award, Dr. Kern-Foxworth isnot just the beneficiary of Lee Barrow’s legacy, she also createda program during her 2000 AEJMC presidency that will alwaysbe her legacy to AEJMC and members who participated in JLID,a leadership development program to prepare women and peo-

ple of color in AEJMC to become deans and department direc-tors.

AEJMC Executive Director Jennifer McGill, whom I recognized atthe Business Meeting for 30 years of service to AEJMC, shares inJLID’s legacy because under her leadership, JLID successfullygraduated 76 AEJMC members before going on hiatus after 2009because of lack of foundation funding. To everyone’s excite-ment, incoming AEJMC President Elizabeth Toth is re-launchingJLID under the new name of Institute for Diverse Leadership inJournalism and Communication and new funding from AEJMC’ssuccessful Centennial Campaign and a generous gift fromASJMC, the association for journalism and communicationdeans, directors, and department chairs. By re-establishing theleadership training program to develop more journalism andcommunication administrators who are women and people ofcolor, Elizabeth is continuing JLID’s legacy, securing her ownlegacy as AEJMC president, and providing a benefit to currentand future AEJMC members.

During my 2013-2014 AEJMC presidency, I have also tried tocontributeto currentand futureAEJMCmembers withmy presidentialinitiatives, in-cluding Na-tional NewsEngagement Day, the International Regional Conference in Santi-ago, Scholarsourcing, the Graduate Student Info Expo and theAEJMC Legacy Donor program.

Unlike my other presidential initiatives, the AEJMC Legacy Donorprogram, which I proposed when I ran for vice president, is notsomething we like to talk about, but it is important to talk aboutbecause it speaks to the legacy that each of us can leave toAEJMC.

Approved by the Board at the 2014 conference in Montreal, theAEJMC Legacy Donor program is elegant in its simplicity, enor-mous in its potential impact, and a wonderful way for AEJMCmembers to give back to an organization that has played such animportant role in their career success.

You can become an AEJMC Legacy Donor by following three sim-ple steps:

Discuss the AEJMC Legacy Donor Program with the Executive Di-rector of AEJMC to make sure your questions are answered andyour desires for your bequest will be met.

Members Can Nominate Candidates for Upcoming Election

It’s time to call up the next team of AEJMC’s leaders. This year AEJMC will again use an online process for nominating candidates for

the association’s top leadership positions. The Nominations and Elections Committeeinvites nominations, including self-nominations, for the vice presidency and for openseats on our elected standing committees. Nominations must be posted by Friday,Oct. 17; the election (also online) will take place in the spring of 2015.

All current AEJMC members will receive an email with a link to the onlinenominations form in mid-September.

The committee will review nominations and select a final slate of candidates.Two candidates will be selected to run for the office of vice president, with the win-ner serving as vice president in 2015-16, becoming president-elect in 2016-17, andAEJMC president in 2017-18. Our current president-elect, Lori Bergen of Marquette,will move up next year to the presidency, and current vice president, Paul Voakes ofColorado, will move up to president-elect.

The climate I refer to is not the nippyUpper Midwest one, often blamed forlack of diversity. It is the climate in everydepartment, school or college.

Best recruiting practices for diversitymay increase numbers of under-repre-sented groups; but climate retains them.

We work on climate every day inHamilton Hall. Here are some examplesassociated with doing diversity:

Faculty take Safe Zone training so stu-dents know where to go to discuss issuesassociated with sexual orientation.

Because more than half of our gradu-ate students are from China, we celebrateLunar New Year with dance, song, foodand good will.

Many of our Asian students adoptAmerican names, as is common practice.Several professors at Greenlee adoptedChinese names in response. Mine is BaiChee Mai.

One advertising professor posts lec-tures in English and Mandarin, a practicethat is gaining national attention and nowis spreading throughout the institution.

Two other professors are working onfederal grants to help aging femalelandowners adopt conservation farmingpractices.

Another has published award-winningworks on women pioneers in journalism.

Another professor created a photodocumentary of Mexican immigrants inMarshalltown, Iowa, who were subject tothe largest-ever raid at a U.S. packingplant.

Four of our students are recent partici-pants in the American Advertising Associ-ation’s Promising Minority Studentcompetition.

Uhuru, a student-run multiculturalmagazine, titled itself after the Swahiliword for “freedom” to advertise its mis-sion to under-represented groups.

One of our academic advisers, a mem-ber of the Kiowa tribe of Oklahoma, hasbeen selected as one of only 10 advisersacross the country to participate in theNational Academic Advisers Association’sEmerging Leaders Program.

There is so much more to recount. Youcan find the specifics in our Diversity Pageon the front door of the Greenlee web-site.

Many communication programs canboast similar or even more substantialachievements in equity and diversity.What sets the Greenlee School apart isthe ability of faculty and staff to self-cri-tique. It is difficult to self-critique in con-tentions climates, which is why we focuson the word “celebrate” when we do di-versity.

Our philosophy is simple: If youcreate a welcoming climate, diversityhappens.

Some people do not thrive in a cele-bratory environment. For instance, we donot envy but embrace each other’s suc-cesses, as if they were our own. We donot elevate status by title or rank or bytouting one type of professional experi-ence, research or degree over anothertype. We advocate for equity, especially insalary considerations. We expose our stu-dents to differing viewpoints that chal-lenge our social and political beliefs,inviting to campus such speakers as

Bethany McLean, Vanity Fair; Paul Gidot,Wall Street Journal; Eugene Robinson,Washington Post; and Clarence Page,Chicago Tribune.

As our climate improved, so did ournumbers. We raised the percentage ofnon-white students from 8% in 2004 tomore than 14% today. Greenlee profes-sors have served on college and universitydiversity committees. Our collective ef-forts dovetailed nicely into priorities forequity and inclusion advanced by ourPresident, Steven Leath. The focus on cli-mate also has helped facilitate an influx ofinternational undergraduate students toISU, doubling in five years to almost 2,000students today. In sum, the practice ofglobal media at Greenlee is helping our in-stitution realize its goal of global diversityand outreach.

Before closing, I’m going to ask thefaculty and staff of the Greenlee School tostand once more.

Each one of those colleagues―of vari-ous social classes, nationalities, races andorientations―has one thing in common:They put the interests of the School overtheir own.

I can make that bold statement―eachone standing there―shares that requisiteattribute of climate. It takes a long jour-ney to get there. If we can do it, so canyou.

AEJMC is calling on its members to involve their classes, departments, campuses, communi!es, state and local media in the first"ever Na!onal News Engagement Day.

Even though more news pla#orms are available 24/7 and there are diverse ways to engage with news, ge$ng news is no longer ana!onal priority. For the Millennial genera!on we teach, news is even less important, and for some, news is not even in their lives.That’s why the most recent Pew Research Center biennial news consump!onsurvey called 29% of young adults “newsless.”

Rather than remaining on the sidelines observing news’ declining relevance,AEJMC is leading the e%ort to elevate the importance of engaging with news bysponsoring the first Na!onal News Engagement Day. On Tuesday, Oct. 7,everyone is encouraged to read, watch, like, tweet, post, text, email, listen toor comment on news.

Na!onal News Engagement Day will not only contribute to an informed society,which is part of AEJMC’s mission, it will encourage people of all ages to explore news and raise awareness about the importance ofbeing informed. Na!onal News Engagement Day will also help people discover the benefits of news, whether giving them somethingnew to talk and tweet about or making them feel empowered as they learn news can be helpful in their daily lives. And in an erawhen public regard for the press is at its lowest point, Na!onal News Engagement Day provides an opportunity to be&er educatethe public about the press’ principles, process, watchdog role and First Amendment rights.

Unsure what to do for Na!onal News Engagement Day? Na!onal News Engagement Day can have the greatest impact when AEJMCmembers involve their own classes and reach out beyond their classes, whether to non"journalism and non"communica!on classes,campus and community organiza!ons, middle schools and high schools or local media. So the first thing to do for Na!onal News En"gagement Day is to pledge to get involved at h&p://www.newsengagement.org/. Already AEJMC members in 41 states, the Districtof Columbia, and five countries have pledged their par!cipa!on.

October 15 Deadline for Members to Submit Proposals for AEJMC-Peter Lang Publishing Scholarsourcing SeriesBased on the concept of crowdsourcing, AEJMC and Peter Lang Publishing have joined together in a book publishing ven-ture called Scholarsourcing that re-imagines the way scholarly books are proposed, peer-reviewed and approved forcontract.

ProcessIn the first round of Scholarsourcing, AEJMC members are invited to submit abbreviated book proposals that are relevant tojournalism and communication and speak to the mission of AEJMC. The abbrevi-ated proposals are uploaded to an online system that allows AEJMC members tobrowse, comment and vote on the proposals. Once the voting period ends, anAEJMC Scholarsourcing editorial committee will review the abbreviated propos-als, member comments and votes to determine the book proposals that will ad-vance to the second round. In the second round, authors of the top proposals areinvited to submit complete book proposals that will be reviewed by an AEJMCScholarsourcing editorial committee. Authors of the best proposals that fit the Scholarsourcing criteria will be offered bookcontracts by Peter Lang Publishing.

Criteria and DeadlinesOct. 15 is the deadline to submit an abbreviated book proposal for the first round of Scholarsourcing. The proposal of nomore than 500 words must include the book title, rationale and synopsis of the book (250words). It should then state the book’s contribution to the field of journalism and commu-nication and how it speaks to the mission of AEJMC (250 words). The proposed bookshould be based on original research; it should not include previously published material.At the end of the proposal, the author’s name, affiliation, email address and phone num-ber must be included. The proposal should be emailed as a Word attachment to Mary Savi-gar, Peter Lang senior acquisitions editor, at [email protected] no later than 11:59p.m., Oct. 15. Please put “Scholarsourcing” in the subject line of the email.

The acquisitions editor will remove author-identifying information from the abbreviated book proposals and send to theAEJMC executive director for placement into the AEJMC online system which will allow AEJMC members to browse, commentand vote on proposals between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15, 2015.

NotificationAuthors will be notified by March 1, 2015, if their proposals advance to the second round. These authors will be invited tosubmit a complete book proposal (guidelines will be issued at that time). Complete book proposals must be submitted tothe Peter Lang acquisitions editor by April 14, 2015. These proposals will be reviewed by the AEJMC Scholarsourcing editorialcommittee and authors will receive written feedback.

Authors will be notified whether they will receive a book contract no later than June 15, 2015.

In order to maintain an open and fair editorship selection process, the AEJMC Publications Committee is callingfor applications and nominations. Nominees will be contacted and asked to submit applications. All applicants will be consid-ered for the position. Editors are appointed for four-year terms (pending membership approval of change from three- tofour-year terms).

Responsibilities include the prompt processing of all manuscripts submitted to Journalism &Communication Educator; coordinating four issues per year; handling all correspondence rela-tive to the publication; cooperating with the AEJMC Central Office on business and budgetmatters affecting the journal; reporting to and working with the Publications Committee onthe continuous development of the journal; and preparing an annual report. The editor willwork with the production and promotion representatives of the publisher. The editor receivesan annual honorarium of $5,000.

Applicants and nominees must be AEJMC members in good standing. They should also be ableto write and edit clearly and concisely; have an understanding and appreciation of a broadrange of research methods; have extensive knowledge of the literature of mass communica-tion; and be housed in a department or school that is eager to cooperate in this publishingventure with special reference to such considerations as office space, travel, use of equipmentand provision of student and/or staff assistance. The Publications Committee expects the editor to comply with the graphicdesign standards established for all official AEJMC publications.

Call Issued for Blum Award NominationsThe Eleanor Blum Distinguished Service to Research Award was created to recognize people who have devoted substantialparts of their careers to promoting research in mass communication. It is named in honor of its first recipient, the late EleanorBlum, a long-time communications librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Blum Award is not necessarily given every year, but nominations received by Dec. 9 will be considered for a 2015 award.Nomination packets should include a letter describing the nominee’s contributions in the area of the award, the nominee’sC.V. and at least five additional letters of support (preferably more) from colleagues who can attest to the candidate’s qualifi-cations for the award. 1. The AEJMC Montreal Conference features a record number of accepted papers — 910. The 2014 conference is the associa-tion’s 4th meeting in Canada, and its second time in Montreal. The association met in Ottawa in 1975, Montreal in 1992 andToronto in 2004. The Central Office shipped 6,360 pounds of materials for the 2014 meeting.

2. New Conference Programming Process — The first year of the new programming process for Council of Division memberswas a success. For the first time in many years, groups did not have to attend the December Meeting to select program time-slots. Each group submitted its list of sessions, which were randomly allocated in a day-long meeting at the Central Office facil-itated by the CofD head and vice head.

3. AEJMC created a News Engagement Day website and kicked off publicity at the conference. The Day is an initiative of Presi-dent Paula Poindexter. Conference attendees were asked to pledge to participate on Tuesday, Oct. 7. This year’s goal is anews engagement activity in all 50 states. By the end of the conference, members in 41 states had pledged.

4. AEJMC signed a contract with Peter Lang Publishing to create a Scholarsourcing Book Proposal project. The call for the pro-posal was issued at the Montreal conference. AEJMC members will be asked to comment and vote for the best proposals.Winning proposals will be asked to complete a full proposal, which Peter Lang will evaluate.

5. AEJMC Trailblazers of Diversity Oral History Project — AEJMC continues its project to collect oral histories from the manymembers and professionals who worked through the years to diversify the discipline, the professions and the association. Thehistories will be housed at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.

6. Visiting Professors in Social Media Grants — For the fifth year, AEJMC worked with the Scripps Howard Foundation to offersix grants of $4,000 each for faculty to explore how media outlets are using social media. The grants fund a two-week visit to amedia outlet for the faculty and a visit by a professional to the faculty’s campus.

7. New Leadership Institute — Incoming President Elizabeth Toth is developing a new year-long institute for diverse leader-ship. Tentative start date for the program is at the 2015 conference.

8. Work continues on the AEJMC International Regional Conference in Santiago, Chile, to take place Oct. 15 to 17, 2015. AnAll Academic portal will open this fall for competitive research papers. Texas Tech University has signed on as a sponsor.

9. Online forms streamline conference — The online conference registration form for the Montreal conference tracked infor-mation for 2,000 attendees by the early bird deadline. It was the most pre-registered conference attendees to date. Onlineforms were also created for check requests, complimentary students and speaker registrations.

10. AEJMC members approved a new membership category — Beginning Oct. 1, a new membership category for AdjunctFaculty will be available.

AEJMC’s Top Ten in 2014

Members Invited to Contribute Chapters for New Sport/Religion Book AEJMC members are invited to contribute to an anthology tentatively titled Sport and Religion in the 21st Century, to be pub-lished in late 2015 by Lexington Books, a division of Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. The work will address this topic from avariety of perspectives, including cultural, sociological, political, technological, and other chapters, TBD. The scope of the bookis not fixed, and prospective authors are encouraged to consider unique approaches.

Authors and scholars are invited to submit research papers and panel proposals for the 40th annual AEJMC Southeast Collo-quium, which will be held March 26-28, 2015, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Jane Kirtley, the Silha Pro-fessor of Media Law and Ethics at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will be thekeynote speaker.

In honor of the 40th anniversary, this year’s conference will feature a special pre-conference event, Ida B. & Beyond — in-cluding peer-reviewed presentations and panels from scholars of communication and history from across the country andformal comments from keynote speaker Mia Bay, the director for the Center of Race & Ethnicity at Rutgers University.

Research Papers

Authors should submit each paper as an email attachment (documents may be submitted in the following formats: Word,PDF) directly to the paper chairs listed below for each division by no later than 11:59 p.m. Dec. 8 EST. Thanks to a PRSA Foundation grant, the Inez Kaiser Graduate Students of Color Awards Program was extended to three re-cipients at AEJMC’s Montreal conference. The awardees were ‘Niyi Waid Bello, Ph.D. candidate, Texas Tech; NiveenAbiGhannam, Ph.D. candidate, Texas at Austin; andYoung Eun Park, doctoral student, Indiana.

The award seeks to encourage these students’ aca-demic career aspirations, and in turn, their involve-ment broadens the diversity within AEJMC’s PublicRelations Division, AEJMC and the profession. In ad-dition to increased travel funding for the fellows, amentoring component was added to the program.

“I am profoundly honored to be named one of the2014 Kaiser fellows and to join the list of distin-guished past awardees,” says Niveen AbiGhannam,whose research focus is on science communication,including women science opinion leaders. “Thisaward is such an encouraging early career recogni-tion for me and a great motivation to keep excelling.”

AEJMC’s Standing Committee on Research invites nominations for the 2015 Tankard Book Award.

Authors who are AEJMC members as of Nov. 12 may self-nominate any first-edition scholarly monograph, edited collection ortextbook published in 2014 that is relevant to journalism and mass communication. (The copyright MUST be 2014.) Nomi-nated books may be co-authored or co-edited and must be well-written and break new ground. Nominations are due Nov. 12.

The three finalists will discuss their works at an awards panel at the 2015 AEJMC San Francisco conference. Following the dis-cussion, the 2015 Tankard Book Award winner will be announced. Finalists must agree to be present at the Tankard panel andregister for the AEJMC conference. Finalists will be notified by early June 2015.

Benson Wins 2014 Tankard Book Award

NYU Professor Rodney Benson has been named the winner of AEJMC’s 2014 Tankard BookAward for his book Shaping Immigration News: A French-American Comparison.

Benson received the award Aug. 6 during AEJMC’s Montreal conference.

Benson is an associate professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication atNew York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development andan affiliated faculty member in the Department of Sociology. He holds a Ph.D. in sociologyfrom the University of California, Berkeley.

The book, published in 2013 by Cambridge University Press, compares immigration news cov-erage in the United States and France from the early 1970s through the 2000s, drawing on de-tailed text and image analysis and nearly 100 interviews with journalists in Paris, Los Angelesand New York. Benson draws on the comparison to draw broader conclusions about journalis-tic practices and performance in the two countries. According to Cambridge University Press’sdescription of the book, Benson “challenges classic liberalism’s assumptions about state inter-vention’s chilling effects on the press, suggests costs as well as benefits to the current vogue inpersonalized narrative news, and calls attention to journalistic practices that can help em-power civil society.”

Don Stacks Receives 2014 Bowles Public Service AwardDon Stacks, Miami, is the recipient of AEJMC’s 2014 Dorothy Bowles Award for Outstanding PublicService. The award recognizes an AEJMC member who has a sustained and significant public-servicerecord that has helped build bridges between academics and professionals in mass communica-tions. Stacks (pictured at right) received the award during AEJMC’s Business Meeting Aug. 8 at theMontreal conference.

Stacks has written more than 150 scholarly articles and papers, and has spoken at conferences onfive continents. His books, Primer of Public Relations Research and Dictionary of Public RelationsMeasurement and Research, have become vital tools for public relations professionals, clarifying,systematizing and informing methods and ideas around research and evaluation in the field. Heserves on the boards of leading communication and public relations journals and directs the annualInternational Public Relations Research Conference, which he founded 18 years ago. Stacks alsoserves as trustee for the Institute for Public Relations, and is on the boards of the International Pub-lic Relations Association and the Institute for Public Relations.

Submit Now for 2015 AEJMC-Knudson Latin America PrizeAEJMC is calling for books and manuscript-length non-fiction reporting projects (including multi-media) for the AEJMC-Knudson Latin America Prize.

This award is given annually to a book or project concerning Latin America or coverage of issues in Latin America. The workmust make an original contribution to improve knowledge about Latin America to U.S. students, journalists or the public.The submission should either be journalistic or educational in nature, or both. Thesubmission may be the result of one author or a team’s work. The work must havebeen published in English. Only one submission is allowed per person. AEJMC does re-serve the right to not present an award.

Topics are open, but preference will be given to work on civic issues or topics that pro-mote social change and that break new ground. Works must have been published in2014. Entries should include six copies of the work as well as a narrative putting thework in social, political and cultural context. The winner must attend the AEJMCconvention in San Francisco in August 2015 to receive the award. The winner willbe notified by early June 2015. Class had begun when I’d clicked the “play” arrow a while earlier.The professor, an esteemed and personable scholar at a top-tieruniversity, was making a complex and considered argumentabout an intriguing subject. Her words, though, were slipping by.I stopped the video several times, went back a few sentences, re-played, then replayed again.

I took notes to focus my attention, but… No. Not happening. I hadto figure something out before her points stood a chance of stick-ing, and it wasn’t an abstruse point that needed clarification. Itwas something painfully mundane, in fact. Was her blouse but-toned incorrectly? Was the collar poorly constructed or was it sup-posed to look that way? Maybe the crookedness was an opticalillusion? Fortunately, I could pause and ponder: chalk one up forrecorded pedagogy. But first I did the equivalent of passing a notein class: I took a screenshot of the professor and her odd blouseand sent it to a friend.

Although I’m a professor and happily so, last semester I completedfour MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses – as a student andI’m enrolled in three more. It’s safe to say I’m impressed and, per-haps, addicted. Much of what I’m learning, however, has less to dowith mastering subjects than gaining insight into how I react as astudent. By extension, I’m learning things to do and not do as ateacher. For starters, in my professor role, I’ve vowed never towear puzzling clothes to class.

The anonymity of the MOOC plays to my dual-agenda advantage,freeing me to relate to the course simply as me, not as someoneresponsible for keeping up a public persona. In me-to-monitor ses-sions, unobserved, I am allowed degrees of focus that would befreaky in person. As a result, I can become intensely aware of myprofessors and the settings in which they are teaching. I’m free toacknowledge frustrations and distractions – to say “Argh!” outloud when needed. In the public forum “discussions” with fellowenrollees, a feature of many MOOCs, I can lurk as well as partici-pate to get an idea of how the course is being received. Is my co-hort on track or splintered into la-la land? I saw both, and I sawreasons for both.

I’ve gained a greater respect for students’ need for recognition.Over the years, as grading and feedback fatigue takes its toll, indi-vidual notice can recede – it takes concerted time and effort. As aMOOC student, I found myself yearning for attention, and thatneed awakened the professor side of me. If I had the choice nowbetween making more assignments, thereby lessening the chanceof feedback, or going for fewer and paying more attention, I’d gofor the latter. I’m going to increase the number of “extra credit”assignments, too.

Here are some of the other top lessons I’ve learned from being inMOOCs:

Be highly aware of distractions. What’s written on the board orprojected on the screen behind you? Are there hallway dramasvisible from the class? Is the sun pouring in and hampering stu-dents’ ability to read your face as you speak? Is someone smackinggum? Don’t be so intent on your presentation that you allow suchthings to highjack or hamper your students’ progress.

Attention cycles matter. Timing matters. Emphasis matters. I waslucky to take a “bootcamp” in pedagogy when I began teaching atArizona State. Ten years later, I remember what an instructor toldus: after 45 minutes of listening nonstop to a lecture, learninggoes in reverse. Alas, after one of my MOOCs, I truly believe. Takebreaks. Diversify delivery. Emphasize points with something otherthan your voice – write on a board, hold something up, changewhere you stand. Take breaks, and encourage students to do thesame. At home, plugged into my computer, I was neverthelessfree to walk around while listening and set my own breaks. Thishelped me absorb the material. See what you can do to give yourstudents absorption time, too.

Make-work assignments are deadly. Sure, they can reinforce a les-son point, but they build in resentment and demonstrate a lack ofrespect for the students’ time and effort. If a solid review of thematerial is necessary to bring a point or a skill home, or if simplepractice is needed, at least say that. Better yet, try to incorporatethat work into a meaningful assignment.

Once a bond breaks, it’s not easy to get it back. Attend to momen-tum. The best classes made me eager for the next ones by show-ing me I’d learned something and would soon be building on thatknowledge. Connecting the classes is as important as connectingstudents to the classes. I don’t know how yet, but I’m going to besuper attentive to what I teach just before and just after Thanks-giving break this year. No need to lose them in the home stretch.

It pays to switch perspectives. I recommend enrolling in a MOOCor two; you don’t have to finish… and you might discover a new-found appreciation for useful handouts, accessible material and in-spirational professors. Oh, yes – and you might find inspirationitself.
