ees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in gymnastics, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both base-ball and softball; and an NCAA gymnas-tics championship. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Ath-lete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Is-sues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinc-tion of being a part of seven national cham-pionship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, and 1992), 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips during his career as a player and coach, the first as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national championship team. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of seven national championships.

The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 mil-lion of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those proj-ects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of con-stituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business commu-nity. All of those experiences and relation-ships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a fu-ture that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trust-

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardi-nals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quar-terbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator start-ing in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Ala-bama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s De-gree in Secondary Education from the Cap-stone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He has been married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa since July 20, 1968. They have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

The University of Alabama women’s cross country team is one year re-moved from having its best year in nearly a decade and return this sea-son poised to make even more noise within the conference and region. Under cross country coach Randy Hasenbank’s guidance over the past three years, the ladies have gradually made their way up the standings at both the conference and region meet turning in their best team finish since 2000 of seventh and eighth in 2008, respectively.

“Our number one goal every year is to continue to improve and improve on our conference standing and taking the necessary steps to finish better in the regional meet each year,” Hasenbank said. “It would be great if we could finish in the top three or four in either of those meets. Obviously our goal is to win and get a spot in the national meet but it will take a great effort from each individual.” Even with the squad making drastic improvements over the past few years and having the best year in recent memory, the staff continues to expect more. Though it was a huge step forward in 2008, this team will not be satisfied until they are standing on the podium hoisting the hardware. “At the end of last year, the number one point was that seventh at SECs was a solid team finish but none of us can be happy with a seven,” Hasenbank recalled. “They know what it takes and as young runners, they really handled everything well last year and now have put themselves in position to compete at a high level.” There are few new faces joining the Crimson Tide this season as every member of the top seven runners return in 2009. In 2008, this team competed with 10 underclassmen on a roster of just 13 ladies and this year showcase a roster of 15 with nine underclassmen. The coaching staff, however, does not like to use youth as an excuse to not compete well each week his athletes toe the line. “To me youth isn’t a factor,” Hasenbank said. “Sometimes it’s easy to use youth as an excuse for why you don’t neces-sarily accomplish very much early on in your career. I don’t like to look at it that way and instead look at it as a talented roster with a lot of ability.” The Crimson Tide will be led by returning sophomores Sara Vaughn and Kelsey Johnson who were both named All-SEC and All-South Region last year. Vaughn led the squad in every race and qualified for the NCAA Championships while Johnson missed the championship meet by just one spot. These are the two ladies that will provide the support at the front of the pack week in and week out along with junior Haley Moody who is coming off a year in which she had a series of setbacks. If the Crimson Tide can get all three of them healthy and fit on the same day, this team can contend for titles. Also returning as sophomores are twins Leigh and Sarah Gilmore who showed tremendous improvement in the spring on the track. Though they did not compete at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships, these two posted qualify-ing marks and will be big players on what Alabama can accomplish in 2009. Sophomore Andrea Torske returns after being a consistent top five runner for the Crimson Tide last season. On top of the returning talent, Coach Hasenbank added even more depth to the squad with the addition of freshman Katlyn Will who has won several Mississippi high school state titles and led her team to team titles throughout her career. Also joining the Crimson Tide is in-state recruit Elsbeth Denton who finished runner-up at the cross country state meet in 2007. “I think this is the best situation from a coaching standpoint that I’ve been in since I’ve been here because there is a roster that goes nine or ten deep with ability,” Hasenbank said. “You start counting our top returners, a couple newcom-ers and a couple improving and we’re in a situation where every spot on the roster is competitive. To be in those top seven spots, you’re going to have to come back in shape to get one and you’re going to have to compete well to keep it.” Alabama will open the 2009 season with the Belmont Opener on Sept. 4 in Nashville, Tenn. before hosting the 21st Annual Crimson Classic two weeks later at the Harry Pritchett Running Park on Sept. 18. The Tide won last year’s meet with a score of 38 points. The squad will preview the site of the SEC Championships when it faces conference rival Ole Miss at the Ole Miss Invite on Sept. 26 in Oxford, Miss. The Crimson Tide will then travel to Stillwater, Okla. for the OSU Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State University on Oct. 3. Before starting the championship portion of the schedule, Alabama will get a look at the NCAA Championship course in Terre Haute, Ind. while competing at Pre-Nationals on Oct. 17. “The front half of the schedule is very similar to how we’ve started the last couple of years,” Hasenbank said. “The schedule gets a little more competitive with the OSU Jamboree, which is a very competitive meet with a lot of different schools we don’t usually see. The team is going to be a little bit more mature, we’re still young with a lot of sophomores on the squad, but I think it’s time for them to see how we stack up. Also, hosting the region meet is a great event for us and it’s a great way to promote the sport.” As previously mentioned, the SEC Championships will be held in Oxford, Miss. on Oct. 31. In 2008, the Crimson Tide finished seventh, their best finish since 2000 when they placed fifth. Alabama will host the NCAA South Regional for the first time since 2004 when they finished 15th. The squad posted an eighth place finish last season after not even scor-ing as a team the previous year. The fifth place finish was the highest since 1999 when they finished seventh. The NCAA Championships return to Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23. “We still don’t have a roster deep enough to where we have a margin for error,” Hasenbank said. “Every athlete has to stay healthy and come back better than where they were at the end of last year and they know they need to take another step physically as well as mentally to be ready.”

Sara Vaughn and Kelsey Johnson, both sophomores, return for another season to lead the Ala-bama women’s cross country squad just as they did last season when they ran 1-2 for the Tide in every race. Vaughn, a Tulsa, Okla. native, and Johnson, hailing from Iowa Park, Texas, were named All-SEC, All-SEC Freshman and All-South Region for their performances at the SEC Championships and NCAA South Region Championships, respectively. Vaughn would go on to compete at the NCAA Champion-ships with Johnson missing the chance to advance by just one second.

During their rookie seasons, Vaughn and Johnson competed at the 2009 USA Junior National Cross Country Championships at Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Md. Competing in a field consisting of the top collegiate freshmen and most of the top high school girls in the country, Vaughn finished in fifth place and solidified a spot to represent the U.S. at the IAAF World Championships in Amman, Jordan. Johnson, unfortunately, finished 22nd and needed to place among the top six so therefore did not qualify.

Vaughn would go on to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jor-dan where she helped lead the U.S. squad to a fifth place finish. Among the world’s best cross country juniors (19 years of age and under), Vaughn finished 64th in a race featuring 63 different countries.

“This is a very significant accomplishment for Sara,” head women’s cross country coach Randy Hasenbank said. “When you just consider the sheer numbers in the sport, to be one of six is amazing. I am not surprised; I felt it was very possible for her to qualify. The real surprise was that we did not have two athletes make that squad. Kelsey ran a fantastic race just a week earlier. I really thought that Kelsey could make the squad as well. She just did not fully recover from her race the previous week in Nebraska, it happens.”

“I think it feels a little different because I’m representing a bigger area than just Alabama, but I run every race the same,” Vaughn said. “We all try and run for the same thing and I run because I love it so it’s kind of the same.”

Together, Vaughn and Johnson enjoyed a memorable rookie cross country season at Alabama while putting themselves on the national stage as freshmen. Not only did each earn All-SEC, All-SEC Freshman and All-Region honors, each earned SEC Athlete of the Week honors and etched their name into the Alabama record books. Even with all the traveling and competing, the duo was able to find time to study as each posted individual GPA’s above 3.96 contributing to a 3.7 team GPA in the fall. “I think the best thing about it is that it’s an opportunity for her to see just how big running can be,” Hasenbank said. “She left her comfort zone going over there to compete against the best young runners in the world and I’m pleased that she was able to be a part of it. I think now she understands, after going to the event, what a big opportunity and accomplishment it is.”

Randy Hasenbank is entering his fourth season as head cross country and assistant track coach for the Alabama women’s team. Before taking over the program in the fall of 2006, the cross country team had just one All-SEC performer since 2000 and no athlete had garnered All-South Region honors since 1999. In Hasenbank’s three seasons at the helm of the women’s cross country team, he has had at least one NCAA All-South Region performer in his three years including freshmen Sara Vaughn and Kelsey Johnson. Hasenbank has guided three freshmen (Haley Moody, Vaughn and Johnson) to a spot on the All-SEC team. In his first cross country season with the Tide, Hasenbank led Julia Hicks to an All-Region team honor and the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, the Tide’s first NCAA qualifier since 2000. In the spring of 2008, Hasenbank added eight-time junior college National Champion, Betty Rot-ich to the squad. Betty made an immediate impact to the Crimson Tide garnering All-SEC honors in the indoor 5,000m and outdoor 10,000m. In ad-dition, Rotich became the first distance runner to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2000. The 2008 season was the most prolific cam-paign in the last decade of Alabama cross country. Hasenbank led a team comprised of mostly under-classmen (10 of 13) to a seventh place finish at the SEC Championships and an eighth place finish at the NCAA South Region Championships marking their highest finish at both meets since 2000. Ha-senbank coached his second athlete (Vaughn) in four years to a NCAA Championship appearance. He coached Vaughn and Johnson to the 2009 USA Junior National Cross Country Championships where Vaughn advanced to the IAAF Junior World Cross Country Championships. In the spring of 2009, Hasenbank coached freshmen Vaughn and Andrea Torske to the third and fifth All-Time best performances in school his-tory in the 3,000m steeplechase. Fellow freshman Johnson qualified for the Mideast Region Champi-onships in the 1,500m and 5,000m. Hasenbank joined the Alabama staff following

four years at Wichita State where he served as head coach of the men and women’s cross country teams and assistant coach for the track and field program. He led the Shockers to the 2005 MVC Cross Country Championship. Hasenbank coached Wichita State athletes to 64 All-MVC honors. Hasenbank had athletes break 13 school records while coaching 13 female athletes to NCAA qualifying marks. He coached 18 student-athletes to individual MVC Championships, 12 Re-gional qualifying marks and nine NCAA qualifying marks. In addition, his athletes earned four NCAA All-American honors, the Midwest Regional Ath-lete of the Year and the MVC Athlete of the Year. Hasenbank, a former steeplechaser, has enjoyed much success coaching the event as his athletes have earned eight NCAA regional qualifying marks and five NCAA qualifying marks. Most recently, Hasenbank coached Desiraye Osburn to a 9:47 ef-fort in the event, which was good enough for No.

10 All-Time in U.S. history. From the spring of 1990 until the spring of 1993, Hasenbank worked at Cloud County Community College, in Concordia, Kansas, where he served as assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach, head men’s soccer coach, intramural director and instructor. As an athlete, Hasenbank earned junior college All-American honors as a member of the Cloud County track and field/cross country team. At Wichita State, he was an All-MVC performer and helped lead the nationally ranked Shockers to the 1989 MVC Cross Country Championship. A member of the Wichita State Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Hasenbank earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1990 and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration in 1995, both from Wichita State. Hasenbank is married to the former Lennis Whitehair, of Abilene, Kansas.

Former World-class thrower Sandy Fowler, a four-time All-American, National Champion and Olympian is entering her 13th season at the helm of the University of Alabama women’s track team as head coach. Fowler wasted little time in her ef-forts to return the Crimson Tide squad to an All-American level of competition. Before her arrival prior to the 1998 season, Alabama had not had an All-American since 1996. By 1999, two athletes had earned All-American honors with three more earn-ing the accolade in 2000. In the last nine seasons, Fowler and her staff have produced 25 All-Ameri-cans. Fowler’s success has come largely due to her philosophy of fielding a balanced squad, with an increasingly strong sprint, distance and field pro-gram. She is quick to point out that Alabama’s suc-cess is an end result of bringing in athletes who believe in the system as well as the coaching staff and feel a sense of ownership. “Our goal is to have a well-rounded pro-gram that is competitive at the SEC and NCAA level in all event areas. The emphasis is to keep the team moving forward by being tougher both mentally and physically than our competitors,” Fowler said. “Our team needs to be strong, consistent and aggres-sive in all areas. My philosophy has been to be selfish when you compete, worry about yourself, be aggressive, and want the victory more than your competitor.” Another Fowler ‘stepping stone’ was re-turning the Crimson Tide to the top half of the SEC. She was able to accomplish that in the spring of 2001 when the squad took sixth at the SEC Outdoor Championships. “Getting this program back to the top of the SEC was a big step for us,” Fowler said. “The Southeastern Conference is without a doubt the most talented conference in the country and if you are successful here, you’re going to be suc-cessful on a national level.” Fowler has been teaching the value of teamwork since her first day with the Crimson Tide. She took over a program that was once one of the South-eastern Conference’s best, a program that won the conference indoor and outdoor title in 1994, but a team that spent the last part of the ‘90s rebuilding the championship form. Fowler stresses that education is first and fore-most at the Capstone and each athlete knows from the first day of the recruiting process that Fowler demands excellence in the classroom as well as on the track. The track team placed 13 student-athletes on the Academic All-SEC Honor Roll in 2009. “Athletes need to realize that education provides a lifetime of opportunity,” Fowler said. “Earning a degree from The University of Alabama is one of the biggest accomplishments of their life. Track and field will provide wonderful dreams, memo-ries, national records, and world rankings, but an education stands alone. The opportunity to use something that you love [track & field] to accom-

plish this is once in a lifetime.” In 2007, former Crimson Tide NCAA Champion Beth Mallory received the pinnacle honor for a NCAA student-athlete, the NCAA Top XIII Award. This honor is bestowed upon the best student-athlete, both academically and athletically, who demonstrates the type of commitment athletes need to have for their future. “The pride that our athletes have in this pro-gram is what propels us to bigger and better times, heights and distances,” Fowler said. “There’s noth-ing better for me than bringing in a young athlete as a freshman and watching them grow physically and mentally within the program.” Step-by-step, Fowler and the Crimson Tide have come closer and closer to returning the Tide to its championship heritage. Talent, teamwork, deter-mination and heart are coming together, along with a generous helping of expert coaching pro-vided by Fowler and her assistants Randy Hasen-

bank and Scott Roberts. Over the last five seasons, during which the Tide produced 13 All-Americans, the Crimson Tide has made its intentions clear – success is again going to be an Alabama habit. In the spring of 2009, Fowler led Angelica How-ard to Alabama’s first individual hammer throw SEC Championship in school history. Under Fowl-er’s guidance, Howard improved her mark in the hammer throw by close to 40 feet from her fresh-man year to her sophomore year. Fowler’s lone NCAA Champion at Alabama was Beth Mallory in 2005 when she claimed the discus title, the first in school history. Mallory garnered six All-American honors in four years at Alabama in the discus (2003-06) and hammer throw (2004-05). Fowler’s success through the years has not gone unnoticed on the international level. She first got a taste for international coaching as an assis-tant coach at the 1990 Goodwill Games before also coaching as an assistant at the 1993 World Cham-pionships in Germany. Fowler served as an assis-tant coach at the 1999 World University Games in Spain before returning to the Olympic Games, not as an athlete but as an assistant coach, in 2000 in Sydney. Fowler’s most recent stints came as the

head coach at the 2005 World Championships in Finland, where the U.S. had one of its best World Championship showings in recent history, and the 2009 Five Nations Match in Scotland. In between international coaching jobs, Fowler has been a meet referee at the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials in New Orleans and served as the Supervisor of Sports Information for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, she coached at the USA Track and Field’s Elite Throw-ers Olympic Development Camp every summer. Before joining the staff at Alabama, she served as the University of Florida’s field events coach for eight years. During that span, the Gators won four SEC team titles as well as the 1992 NCAA Indoor Championship. She coached four athletes to seven All-American honors during her Gator tenure. Fowler’s penchant for success began with her days as a champion shot putter at Northeastern University. In addition to being a nine-time All-

American, Fowler won the 1982 AIAW (the NCAA’s predecessor) National Outdoor title. She still holds the school records at North-eastern in the shot put (53-11) and discus (165-10). She graduated from Northeastern in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She was inducted into the Univer-sity’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. In the middle of her collegiate career Fowler earned a spot on the 1980 United States Olympic squad as an alternate in the shot put. Even though the U.S. chose not to participate in the 1980 Olympics, Fowler still counts the experience as a positive one. “They did a lot of nice things,” she said. “We had dinner at the White House and met the President and things along those lines that I will never forget.”

Fowler competed internationally for the U.S. at the 1981 World University Games in Romania and at the 1981 Pan Pacific Games in New Zealand. She also participated in the 1981 and 1982 USA vs. Rus-sia meets held in Leningrad, USSR and Indianapo-lis, Ind. respectively. In February of 2007, Fowler was inducted in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Athlete Hall of Fame. She was born in Brookline, Mass. which is located in the Boston area. She is married to Cleon Fowler, who owns and operates a sports computer-based timing and data business of international repute. The couple has a dog, Mercury, and a cat, Shadow.
