Lewis University head women’s cross country coach Dana Schwarting, who just completed his fifth season at the helm of the Flyers, has mentored several Track and Field All-Americans during his career, but now he can add a two-time cross country All-American to that list of accolades. Following a 40th-place finish in the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Lewis’ Kathryn Hague became the first Flyer to be named a cross country All-American since Malgorzata Biela, Magdalena Paszta and Kasia Arient accomplished that feat in 1997. Last season, Hague placed 28th overall in the NCAA Cross Country Championships to become the first Flyer to repeat as an All-American since Biela, Paszta and Arient did it in 1997. Schwarting, who came to Lewis in 2003 as an assistant track and field coach, has coached 49 Flyer Track and Field All-Americans, including Hague, who repeated as an Outdoor Track and Field All-American in the 1,500-meter run in 2011. He was named the Flyers’ head track and field coach in March of 2005 and the head men’s and women’s cross country coach following the resignation of Rick Wemple in late 2006. Other NCAA Division II All-America award winners during Schwarting’s tenure include pole-vaulter Duane Chappell, who won

three national titles; pole-vaulter Mark Zilch, the 2005 Division II indoor national champion and a 2005 U.S. Indoor National Championships qualifier; and Billy Stadele, the 2005 Division II and Great Lakes Valley Conference male indoor Athlete of the Year, a 2005 indoor All-American in the pole vault and 60-meter hurdles and an All-American and two-time GLVC champion in the decathlon. Schwarting came to Lewis after serving two years as men’s and women’s track and field head coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. At Morningside, he coached three national champions, three national runners-up and 19 Division II All-Americans. In addition, he coached the male and female 2001 Division II indoor Athlete of the Year and the female 2001 Division II outdoor Athlete of the Year. Two of Schwarting’s Morningside athletes, A.G. Kruger and Meredith Davis, qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the hammer throw and heptathlon, respectively. Kruger went on to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Schwarting earned bachelor’s (1996) and master’s (1998) degrees at the University of South Dakota. As a member of South Dakota’s track and field team, he earned four varsity letters competing as a decathlete, hurdler and long-jumper. He was a two-time North Central Conference champion and national qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles, and he earned all-conference honors in the decathlon, heptathlon and long jump. When he graduated, he held school records in the pentathlon and shuttle-hurdle relay. Schwarting and wife Lisa reside in Joliet with sons Logan, Parker and Keegan.

Dana SchwartingHead Coach | 5th Season

Rick HammerAssistant Coach | 2nd Season

Since his arrival in 2009, Lewis University As-sistant Cross Country/Track and Field coach Rick Hammer has made an immediate impact on both programs, highlighted by back-to-back All-America finishes by Kathryn Hague (2009, ‘10) in the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships. Prior to his arrival in Romeoville, Hammer spent three years at Division III Manchester College (IN), where he coached seven national qualifiers, two All-Americans and one National Champion during his tenure. While there, 11 different school-records were shattered and 186 spots were claimed on the Manchester track and field top 10 performance list. Hammer also spent time as an assistant coach for both Tri State University and IPFW. Hammer is a USATF Level I Certified Track and Field Coach and has a Level II certification in the endurance events. He is also a United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association and USA Triathlon member. As an undergrad, Hammer competed for Huntington University, as he was a two-time captain, national qualifier and Academic All-American.

James KearneyAssistant Coach | 1st Season

Former Manchester College and Saint Francis (Ind.) standout James Kearney just completed his first season as a graduate assistant coach for both the Lewis cross country and track and field teams. He works primarily with the Flyer distance specialists. While at Manchester, Kearney was the captain for both the cross country and track and field teams from 2007-09. Kearney also competed for Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana from 2004-07 where he was the captain of both the cross country and track and field teams. While there, he set the school-record in the indoor 1,500-meter run and as a member of the indoor 4x800 relay. He has received his USA Track & Field Level I Coaching Certificate and is currently pursuing his Level II certificate. He served as Manchester’s recruiting secretary from December of 2007 until January of 2009. In 2009, Kearney was an assistant cross country coach for Calumet College of Saint Joseph and for the last three summers, he has served as a camp counselor for the Yoder-Begley Running Camps. Kearney, who has earned three bachelor degrees from three different institu-tions, is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Lewis.

2010 Women’s Cross Country Recap

Senior Kathryn Hague was the first Flyer to repeat as a Cross Country All-American since 1997.

It was a season to remember for Lewis University senior Kathryn Hague, as she became the first Flyer in 11 years to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship and the first to repeat as an All-American in 13 seasons. Her time of 21:29 at the 6K GLVC Championships was the third-fastest in school history. She was the first Flyer to take home the title since Marianna Vidovic won the race in 1999. The Chicago, Illinois native qualified for the NCAA Championships following her ninth-place finish of 21:44.28 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships to earn All-Midwest Region honors on November 20th. Two weeks later, Hague became the fourth Flyer in school-history to repeat as an All-American, as she placed 28th overall with a time of 22:02.6 at the 6K NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park on December 4th. Lewis’ Malgorzata Biela, Magdalena Paszta and Kasia Arient were the last Flyers to re-peat as All-Americans in 1997, as that squad tied for second as a team at the National Championships. The top 40 finishers in the race earn All-America status. The 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference champion finished 40th in 2009, but drew on that experience to help her in the race. “Kathryn went out in the top 30, ran a real controlled race and brought it home,” Lewis head women’s cross country coach Dana

Schwarting said. “The biggest difference between this year and last is that she wasn’t nearly as nervous and much more relaxed.” Hague was also the top finisher from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. She also won the 5K National Catholic Invitational (18:22), hosted by Notre Dame, and the 5K Illini Open (17:36), hosted by the University of Illinois. Lewis freshman Ciersten Deardorf also impressed at the National Catholic Invitational, as she finished fourth overall with a time of 18:54. Those performances

helped Lewis to a second-place finish as a team. Lewis opened the season at the Badger Open, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, where the Flyers finished fifth out of eight teams, ahead of Division I Northern Illinois on September 3rd. Two weeks later, the Flyers competed at the highly prestigious 5K Greater Louisville Classic, where they competed against the top Division I and II teams in the country and finished 31st out of 35 teams. The Flyers would beat two more Division I teams at the 5K Illini Open, as they finished fourth as a team, defeating both Illinois State and Bradley. Hague’s first-place finish at the GLVC Championships was not enough, as the Flyers finished fifth as a team. Along with Hague, sophomore Amy Clawson was named to the All-GLVC team followoing her 13th-place finish of 22:43. The rest of the Flyers, excluding Hague, ended the 2010 campaign with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.

Fundamental to its Mission is a spirit of association which fosters community in all teaching, learning and service.

HISTORY Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School, a school for boys and was established on 170 acres of farmland donated by Mi-chael and Frances Fitzpatrick of Lockport. Aviation technol-ogy became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. During World War II, hundreds of Navy fl ight instructors were trained at Lewis. In 1952, the school

was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Tech-nology and granted its fi rst baccalaureate degrees. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 328-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institution. Today, with grow-ing enrollment, outstanding programs, experienced faculty and motivated students, Lewis University is recognized as one of the fi nest, mid-sized, compre-hensive Catholic universities in the country.

When Dan Schumacher was hired as Lewis University’s Director of Athletics in June of 2006, the Chicago native knew the heights that the Flyers Athlet-ics program could reach as a department. With great vision comes great expectations, and Schumacher and the Flyers have most certainly delivered. Since his arrival, Lewis has won fi ve regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and nine GLVC Tournament championships, while making appearances in 12 NCAA Tournaments, including the men’s soccer team’s run to the ‘Final Four’ in 2009. While the Flyers have made improvements on the fi eld, the fi elds have also been improved during Schumacher’s tenure, as there has been over $500,000 worth of facility upgrades on the Romeoville campus. Schumacher helped speed up the facility upgrade timeline by forming the Varsity Club, an organized,

non-profi t fundraising arm of the Lewis University Athletic Department that supports small-scale capital improvements. Neil Carey Arena, home of both basketball and volleyball teams, has seen the most upgrades as it now features a new fl oor, scoreboards, a video board, island baskets and retractable bleachers which has increased the seating to over 1,000. Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have directly benefi tted from Schumacher’s efforts, as the Lewis Swimming Pool now has a state-of-the-art scoring system which has allowed the program to increase its home schedule. The locker rooms in Neil Carey Arena have been remodeled and are now equipped with fl at screen tele-visions. Lewis now has the ability to video stream all of their home basketball games and volleyball matches from the Arena on www.LewisFlyers.com. Schumacher has also helped make the John F. Ken-nedy Sports Center become more ‘Flyer Friendly’, as the hallways proudly display Lewis Athletics Artwork and each offi ce has furniture that has the Lewis Flyers Athletics logo emblazoned on it. The Athletic Training room has been remodeled and now holds custom tables, cabinets, fl ooring and an ice machine. Outside the JFK Sports Center, the Lewis softball team now has new dugouts, a new press box and a custom windscreen for the outfi eld fence, while the outfi eld fence of Brennan Field, home of the Flyer baseball team, now has a custom windscreen as well. On the docket for both fi elds are brand new Daktron-ics scoreboards, which are slated to be fi nished by the 2011 season. What Schumacher is most proud of, however, is the performance of his student-athletes in the classroom. In the past three years, the graduation rate for Lewis student-athletes has risen from 60% to as high as 86%, while the Flyers’ Academic Success Rate (ASR) has peaked at a remarkable 98%, Schumacher has brought along seven new head

coaches, including women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith and men’s basketball coach Scott Trost. Smith has won two Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championships, along with two GLVC Tourna-ment championships while losing just 17 matches in three seasons. In his second season as the head coach, Trost led the Flyers to 20 wins for just the 14th time in school history, as well as an appearance in the GLVC Tournament fi nals and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time since 2004. A 1986 Carl Sandburg High School graduate, Schum-acher was responsible for the fi nancial administration of Winona State athletics. Among his duties were marketing and promotions, development, external relations, corporate relations, facilities oversight, budgeting and NCAA compliance. Schumacher was the primary catalyst of a two-year campaign that generated $3 million, through private donations and newly developed athletics department revenue channels, for major improvements to Winona State’s soccer, football, baseball, softball and bas-ketball facilities. He also spearheaded a project that transformed a $42,000 annual corporate sponsorship program into an annual corporate/external relations program that generates $500,000 in scholarships for Winona State athletics and the WSU Foundation. Schumacher spent seven years with Conseco Finance Corporation prior to joining the Winona State staff, serving as Senior Credit Manager from 1995-98 and as Vice President from 1998-2002. He was a Branch Manager for TCF Bank and Mortgage Corpora-tion in Minneapolis from 1990-95. Schumacher earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations (business administration minor) in 1989 and a master’s degree in educational/school administra-tion in 2005, both at Winona State. As a member of the WSU football team, he garnered All-America honors and served two seasons as a team captain. Schumacher and wife Kristin are the parents of daughter Kasey (15) and sons Jack (12) and Declan (8).
