The University of Mobile volleyball teamwill enter its fifth season of competitionin 2009 with 108 victories and back-to-back trips to the NAIA NationalChampionship already in the books.

"This is a big year for us to try and turnthe corner to be an elite team that consis-tently challenges for a spot in the Top-10and a National Championship," HeadCoach Jon Campbell said. "We've madegreat progress the last three years butstill have room to improve."

To reach that next level, the returningplayers will have to continue to improve, and the incoming class will need to stepup to replace some departing players.

Headlining the returning players is two-time NAIA All-American outside hitterWhitney Knight, and 2008 NAIA All-American Paula Stilkey. They are theteams' lone seniors and will be countedon to set the tone on and off the court.

"Paula and Whitney are obviously two ofour go-to players, and we will need themto be at their best and lead by exampleon and off the court," Campbell said.

Also returning are Kelly Sherling, whohad 296 kills and a .307 attack percent-age, and Cassy Johnson, who was secondon the team with 121 blocks last year.Gone from the squad are Nicole Stokes,DeCreisha Arrington, Syretta Baldwin,Amy Carey and Amber Presnell.

Losing five key contributors means theincoming recruiting class will need toproduce right away. The six signees aresetters Vanessa Rodriguez and MelodyTenney, outside hitters Sarah Scott andHeather Schierer, setter/defensive spe-cialist Courtney Fenwick, and middleblocker Blaire Fowler. Tenney is a trans-fer from Warner University, where sheled the team with 512 assists and 58 aces.

"After losing both setters from last year,we will need Melody, Courtney andVanessa to step up, and I think they havethe skill set to keep this offense running

and even allow us to do some newthings," Campbell said. "Melody has theability to jump set which will allow us torun a faster offense, Courtney is verysmart and quick, while Vanessa'sstrength to push the other two makeseveryone better."

"Sarah is very good at varying her attackand is a crafty hitter, Heather is a strongsix-rotation player who will fight for thelibero spot right away, and Blaire bringsa lot of energy and will challenge forcourt time early on," Campbell said.

Waiting for the returning and incomingplayers is a schedule, which features 31matches overall, seven home matches, and four tournaments. The team willbegin play at the SCAD TournamentAugust 28-29, open Gulf Coast AthleticConference play Sept. 9 at Spring Hill, and host their first home match Sept. 15versus Southern University at NewOrleans.

Georgetown College, whom Mobileplays twice, and Lindenwood both fin-ished 2008 in the NAIA Top-10, whileLubbock Christian, Lee University,Embry-Riddle and Union all finished inthe Top-25 or received votes.

"Early on it was hard to get a goodschedule, but as we've continued to win,we've have been able to add more andmore top opponents, and I think this isour most competitive schedule yet,"Campbell said. "And that's the way wewant it: To be the best you have to beatthe best, and we now have that chance."

A home-and-away series with NCAA IIUniversity of West Florida, and matcheswith very solid Freed-Hardeman,Campbellsville, SCAD and Loyola add tothe list of tough matchups.

"Georgetown and Lubbock were both atnationals last year and will give us agood gauge as to where we are,"Campbell said. "Adding schools likeLindenwood, West Florida, Freed-Hardeman, Campbellsville and SCAD on

to that will really push our girls to getbetter."

While all of the tough non-conferenceschools are great to play and measure upwith, conference play is still crucial. Withdirect qualification in place, the LadyRams need to win the Gulf CoastAthletic Conference Tournament to earna bid to nationals, and to their advantagethe tourney is at home this year.

"Just like we did in 2008, we have to takecare of business in conference before wecan worry about winning a nationaltitle," Campbell said. "Loyola continuesto get stronger and stronger, whileBelhaven and Spring Hill are improving,so it is no sure thing. We certainly arelooking forward to having the GCACtournament on our court."

All-Time Record Versus Opponents

The 2008 season saw the Universityof Mobile volleyball team pick up itsthird straight 30-win season, 34-5,and advance to the NAIA NationalTournament for the second straightyear.

Mobile has quickly turned into aforce to be reckoned with, going 101-19 over the last three years after a 7-13 mark in 2005's inaugural cam-paign.

The season also saw Mobile climbinto the Tachikara-NAIA VolleyballCoaches' Top 25 Poll for the first timein school history, climbing as high asNo. 18 and staying in the poll for thefinal 10 weeks.

"When we started the program in2005, we set our sights on being aNational Championship contender, and we moved another step closer in2008," Head Coach Jon Campbellsaid.

The season began with five straightshutouts and 18 consecutive victo-ries, before a five-set loss at NCAA IIWest Florida on October 7th.

"We had a great start to the year, andWest Florida was the best team weplayed in that stretch. Beating themwould've been good, but losingbrought out a hunger to win that wehadn't seen all season," Campbellsaid.

Mobile bounced back nicely, going 12-2 after the loss toclose out the regular season. The Lady Rams then head-ed into the GCACTournament, needing towin the title to pick up abid to nationals. Mobile, while dominating theGCAC in the regular seasonthe past two years, had yetto win the conference cham-pionship. The team rose tothe occasion and beatDillard and Loyola instraight-sets.

"Before you can even thinkabout being a national titlecontender, you have to takecare of business in yourown conference, and theteam won the tournamentwith authority," Campbellsaid.

For their efforts, the LadyRams got to host WebberInternational in a 2008NAIA National

Championships Opening RoundMatch. Mobile took momentum witha 25-12 victory in the first game andthen held on for 25-22 and 30-28wins to take the match and advanceto Sioux Falls, Iowa for the rest of thetournament.

In pool play at the 29th AnnualNAIA Volleyball NationalChampionship, Mobile drew peren-nial powers Azusa Pacific andColumbia College, who had com-bined for 79 victories in NationalTournament play. Mobile dropped a1-3 decision to Columbia and a 0-3match to Azusa before reboundingwith a 3-2 win over Dordt to closeout the tournament.

"We were disappointed with how westarted, but it was nice to close with avictory, and we were able to see whatkind of competition stands betweenus and our goal of being nationalchamps," Campbell said.

To cap the season, the Lady Ramsracked up several awards. WhitneyKnight was named 3rd-Team NAIAAll-American after racking up 448kills and 365 digs, and Paula Stilkeywas named Honorable MentionNAIA All-American thanks to 319kills, 276 digs and 132 blocks. Knightalso garnered GCAC Player of theYear honors for the second straightyear. Stilkey, Nicole Stokes, SyrettaBaldwin and DeCreisha Arringtonjoined Knight as 1st-Team All-GCACmembers. Amber Presnell, Stilkey,Knight and Baldwin were namedDaktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

"It was great to see our student-ath-letes honored for their hard work onand off the court. Their educationwill carry them farther than volley-ball ever will," Campbell said.
