Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you!

As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of stu-dent-athletes . While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience .

During the 2013-14 academic year, 133 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls . That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg .

Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible educa-tion and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose . We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport .

Head Coach Stephanie Benkowski Coach Benkowski is available for interviews on weekday morn-ings during the season . Please coordinate all requests for per-sonal interviews with Coach Ben-kowski through the Sports Informa-tion Office at (724) 852-3334. Coach Benkowski will be available to report-ers approximately 15 minutes after the end of a match along the Waynesburg bench .

Players Media members are invited to at-tend Waynesburg volleyball practice sessions . Players are available for in-terviews after each practice, as their schedule permits . Post-match player interviews are conducted along the Waynesburg bench at the conclusion of a brief team meeting .

While getting back to the top of the confer-ence mountain is the main goal of any team in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference every year, the Waynesburg University volleyball team has also made it a point to take on an even more important and devastating op-ponent .

Over recent seasons, the Yellow Jackets have become active in raising money for breast cancer research and prevention . This year, their efforts will continue through the Side-Out Foundation and their Dig Pink program .

“I’m just really excited that we have the opportunity to spread the word about the research concerning breast cancer,” said Waynesburg University head volleyball coach Stephanie Benkowski .

Teams will typically wear pink tee shirts or uni-forms at the event, use pink volleyballs for play and sell various items at their respective gymnasiums to support breast cancer re-search . This is Waynesburg’s fourth year with the Dig Pink program . However, the Jackets have been raising money for cancer re-search since 2008 . That year, Benkowski was inspired by some of her PAC opponents to get involved with the program .

“Westminster, Bethany and Grove City have done it for a while now,” Benkowski said . “I just thought it would be a really good cause .”

This year, the Yellow Jackets will host Presi-dents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Saint Vincent on Oct . 17 . All funds raised at the event will go towards the very worthy cause .

The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was es-tablished in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work to-

ward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services .

Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fun-draising efforts . The foundation offers prac-tical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer . It contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer pa-tients, whether it be in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support .

Head coach Stephanie Benkowski returns for

her 10th season leading the Yellow Jackets

volleyball program in 2014 . This year’s squad

returns a mix of returning players and new-

comers looking to help the Jackets make a

climb up the standings in the Presidents’ Ath-

letic Conference (PAC). The team finished in

ninth place a year ago with a 2-16 record in

the PAC and a 7-23 mark overall .

MIDDLE HITTER

This is the position on the court where the

Jackets might have suffered their biggest

losses to graduation . Mabel Culp was one of

the team’s most productive players as a four-

year starter . Culp, who led the team in kills

(223) and blocks (44) in 2013, will be difficult

to replace . The Jackets also lost Sam Styche

to graduation, so Waynesburg will be looking

for players to step up and fill the void in 2014.

Benkowski is expecting sophomore Rachel

Lang to get an extended look in the middle

hitter position . Lang played sparingly in 2013,

collecting 52 kills and 22 blocks as a fresh-

man . Sophomore Jordin Faust also returns,

while freshman Kara Sapp look to provide

depth .

OUTSIDE HITTER

Moving to the outside, Waynesburg will have

to replace Amanda Silay, who also gradu-

ated this past spring . Silay ranked second on

the team in kills (201) and also racked up 353

digs .

The team’s lone senior, Tori Kramer, returns

after totaling 121 kills, 18 blocks, and 23 ser-

vice aces in 2013 . Benkowski also brings back

junior Kourtney Skinner, who has worked her-

self back into the fold after struggling with an

injury in 2013 . Skinner showed some prom-

ise back in 2012 as a freshman . Newcomer

Bridget Bobby will look to make an impact in

her first season with the Jackets. Waynesburg

Central graduate Shannon Morgan joins the

team as a first-year sophomore at the posi-

tion .

SETTER

The Jackets will have to replace their start-

ing setter for the second consecutive season .

With Natalie Ranallo lost to graduation, soph-

omore Morgan Newbauer appears to be the

frontrunner to replace her . Newbauer ranked

second in assists last season with 138, while

also collecting 180 digs . Fellow sophomore

Emily Nowakowski will look for more playing

time in 2014 .

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST

Defensive specialist will undoubtedly be the strength of the team as far as returners are concerned . Waynesburg returns All-PAC hon-orable mention selection Jess Dorazio . The two-sport athlete (volleyball and softball)made a big impact for the Orange and Black in 2013, recording a team-best 504 digs and 26 service aces .

“Jess brings confidence, leadership and hard work to the team,” Benkowski said . “She is a very dedicated player and is always giv-ing 100 percent no matter what sport she is playing . A lot of the team looks up to her for advice and also they want to work hard for her which is why she was picked as a captain this year .”

Also back at the position is fellow junior Meghan Balogh, who totaled 223 digs to rank third on the squad in that category . Junior Savannah Paladin rounds out the returners vying for time at the position . Freshman Cas-sidy Popa looks to add depth in her first year with Waynesburg .

PAC

Thomas More continued its recent domi-nance by winning its fourth PAC title in the past five years by downing top-seeded Bethany in a five-set thriller to take the 2013 conference championship . Geneva won the

title in 2011, but the TMC has won the last two titles and also earned back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 . Geneva, Westminster, Saint Vincent and Grove City rounded out the teams that qualified for the PAC Tournament in 2013 .

The PAC will feature a pair of new faces in 2014, as both Grove City and Thiel will have first-year head coaches.

“The PAC will continue grow stronger every year, especially with the new coaches being hired this year,” Benkowski said . “With Grove City and Thiel hiring very good candidates those programs will continue to succeed and grow .”

Benkowski said the challenge of the compe-tition within the PAC should be a motivating factor for every team in the league .

“Every year, each coach goes out recruiting to find the best players that fit their volleyball program plus the university itself . We are all going out striving to put together the best team we can with the best student athletes,” she said .

The Jackets open the season against Allegh-eny College at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge on Friday, Aug . 29 . PAC play be-gins on Sept . 17, with a road tri-match featur-ing Chatham and Westminster .

Head coach Stephanie Benkowski begins her 10th sea-son at the helm of the Waynesburg volleyball program in 2014 .

Over the past decade, Benkowski has seen 10 players reach All-PAC status, earned PAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and has seen numerous student-athletes earn aca-demic honors .

Waynesburg last made it to the postseason following the 2008 campaign . That year, the Jackets earned an 11-20 overall record and a 6-8 mark in PAC action. As the fifth seed in the tourney, Waynesburg picked up a 3-1 upset victory over number-four Thiel on the Tomcats’ home court .

It was the first win in the conference tourney for Waynesburg since 2005 . The Jackets then went on and played well against the even-tual champs from Westminster during a 3-1 loss .

Individually, Benkowski enjoyed a first for her time at Waynesburg as senior outside hitter Laurie Lindner was named PAC Player of the Year following the 2008 cam-paign. It was the first time Benkowski had coached a player to the prestigious honor . Lindner joined three of her teammates on the 2008 All-PAC squad .

After a rough start to her first season (2005) at Waynesburg that had the team four games below .500, Benkowski guided the Yellow Jackets to 13-consecutive victories .

Waynesburg went on to finish the season at 21-13 overall with an 11-1 mark in conference play and an appear-ance in the PAC Championship match . For her efforts, Benkowski earned PAC Coach of the Year accolades .

The Waynesburg volleyball team has also consistently held a strong presence on the annual Fall PAC Academic Honor Roll and 2010 was no different . The Jacket volley-ball team featured five players on the list.

A 2001 graduate of Saint Vincent, Benkowski has also experienced much success as a player . While at Saint Vincent, she was a member of teams that compiled a re-cord 90-46 and made three playoff appearances in four years . She received second-team all-conference acco-lades in each of her last two seasons with the Bearcats .

In addition to starting on the volleyball team at Saint Vin-cent, Benkowski played four years in the outfield for the Bearcat softball team .

Following her playing career, Benkowski was named the head coach at Point Park . While coaching the Pioneers for four seasons, she coached six players that earned rec-ognition from the conference .

In addition to her coaching duties at Point Park, Benkows-ki served as Associate Athletic Director and earned her master’s degree in Business Administration .

She resides in Baden, Pa . with her husband Jason and their daughters Katarynia and Nadia .

BRUSCHI

Sara Bruschi comes to Waynesburg with a deep pool of coaching experience from both the high school and college ranks . She most recently served as the head coach at Uniontown High School this past fall . During her one and only season with the Red Raiders, Bruschi led her squad to a 10-0 undefeated section record and a spot in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs .

Her high school experiences also include three years as the head coach at one of Uniontown’s biggest rivals, Connellsville High School . Bruschi coached the Falcons from 2008 to 2010 and led the Blue and White to the WPIAL playoffs during her first year on the job.

In between her stays at the two Fayette County high schools, Bruschi returned to her alma ma-ter of Saint Vincent College to spend the 2012 campaign as a volunteer assistant with the Presi-dents’ Athletic Conference (PAC)-rival Bearcats .

Prior to her time on the bench, she wore the green and gold of SVC from 2002-to-2005 . Dur-

ing Bruschi’s senior season (2005), the Bearcats won a conference title and the standout middle hitter served as a team captain . She also ranked in the NAIA top 15 rankings for blocks as both a junior and senior .

Along with her scholastic coaching back-ground, Bruschi served on the coaching staffs for both the Penn Highlands Volleyball Club (2009-2011 and 2014) and the Pitt Elite Volleyball Club (2012-2013) . She also has seven years of experi-ence working in the Junior Olympic club ranks .

Bruschi graduated from Saint Vincent in 2006 with a degree in English/Communications Edu-cation . She played her high school ball at Con-nellsville, which she graduated from in 2002 and earned All-Fayette County laurels while excel-ling with the Falcons .

Bruschi resides in Connellsville with her husband Josh . She teaches eighth grade English at Con-nellsville Junior High School .

The Waynesburg women’s volleyball team finished in ninth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 2013 . Despite the difficult season, the team swept Chatham in conference play and saw five of their seven wins overall come in straight sets . The season got off to a good start wiht the Jackets winning back-to-back matches against Mary Baldwin and Eastern Men-nonite .

At the conclusion of the year, Coach Ben-kowski saw the graduation of four key con-tributors: Amanda Silay, Mabel Culp, Nata-lie Ranallo and Sam Styche .

Culp finished off a strong career by lead-ing the team in kills (223) and blocks (44) this past season . The veteran middle hitter finished with double-digit kills nine times in 2013, including a season-high total of 16 against La Roche on September 21 . Ranallo, who served as the team’s setter, tallied 564 assists and totaled 25 blocks to rank third on the squad . The veteran also chipped in 197 digs on defense, ranking her fourth on the team. She finished with a season-high in digs with 17 on October 29 in a match against Thiel .

Silay, another four-year contributor, fin-ished second on the squad in kills (201) and digs (353) . She earned a season-best 24 digs against Franciscan on September 11 . Silay recorded double-digit digs in 20 matches in 2013 .

The team’s final senior, Sam Styche, reg-istered 152 kills and 65 digs last season . Styche recorded 10 kills against Goucher on August 31 .

Another of Waynesburg’s top players was defensive specialist Jessica Dorazio . Just a sophomore, Dorazio led the Jackets in digs (504) and service aces (26) . The two-sport athlete (softball) registered a career-high 36 digs in an August 30 match against Eastern Mennonite . She recorded double-digit digs in all but four matches this past season and was the only Jacket to ap-pear in every set played in 2013 . For her efforts throughout the season, Dorazio was

named honorable mention All-PAC .

The team’s lone junior, Tori Kramer, com-piled 121 kills, 21 service aces, 18 blocks and 52 digs in 2013 . Sophomore Meghan Balogh finished third on the team in digs with 223 .

Several newcomers also got extended playing time throughout the course of the season . Freshman Rachel Lang recorded 52 kills in limited action to finish fifth on the team in that category . Lang tallied 22 blocks to rank fourth on the squad . Fellow freshman Morgan Newbauer finished with 138 assists, ranking second on the team be-hind Ranallo .

The schedule concluded on November 2, when the Jackets took down Chatham in PAC action on Senior Day . Waynesburg was led by Culp and Silay, who each fin-ished with 12 kills . Silay added 11 digs in the victory .

Waynesburg finished the 2013 season with a 7-23 overall record and went 2-16 against conference opponents .

Senior middle hitter Mabel Culp led the Jackets in kills and blocks during the 2013 season.

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vin-cent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the confer-ence’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Divi-sion III provisional membership in 2007-08. Saint Vincent became full-fledged member of the NCAA last year and the 2011-12 school year saw Geneva do the same after acting as a provisional member. Chatham University became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2010-11, the conference had 39 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 19 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.

The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2013-14 trophies. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named a record 852 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Waynesburg University is a small, private, comprehensive Christian university located in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh . Founded by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a mem-ber of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), the University inspires students to pursue lives of pur-pose through faith, learning and serving .

Offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, Waynesburg University designs its curriculum to meet the needs of today’s students . Undergraduates can choose among more than 70 programs of study, includ-ing the traditional liberal arts such as English, history, biology, and more, and innovative fields such as athletic train-ing, biblical ministries, computer foren-sics, criminal justice, forensic science, marine biology, nursing, sports informa-tion, sports management, and many others .

The University’s Graduate and Professional Studies Program, located at three convenient centers in the immedi-ate Pittsburgh region, offers accelerat-ed, evening programs geared for adult students in the fields of business, nursing, education, and counseling psychology .

The University’s total enrollment is approximately 2,300 students, includ-ing over 1,500 undergraduates on the Waynesburg campus and over 800 graduate and professional studies stu-dents . Waynesburg students enjoy per-sonalized attention from highly qualified faculty, a well-rounded liberal arts cur-riculum, state-of the-art facilities, a net-

worked campus with wireless Internet in academic and recreational settings, and Internet access in all residence hall rooms .

The beautiful campus includes an award-winning campus center, per-forming arts center, and several new, apartment-style residence halls . New additions to campus include a recently constructed Center for Research and Economic Development, modern addi-tions to the dining hall and library, and a new fitness center that is accessible to students, faculty and alumni . The lat-est edition to the campus landscape is the magnificent Roberts Chapel . Completed in 2011, the chapel seats around 600 individuals and has become the centerpiece of the Waynesburg University landscape .

High school students who are actively involved in community service can qualify for the Bonner Scholars program, which provides scholarship assistance for those who com-mit to weekly volunteer service .

The University’s commitment to service learning and service leadership includes national and international mission and service trips . Participating in these experi-ences broadens students’ perspectives and education . Recent international ser-vice trips have included Guatemala, Haiti,

Malawi, Mexico, Austria, South Africa and other locations around the world .

Waynesburg University is a Division III mem-ber of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) . Men’s teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, soccer, tennis, track and field, and wrestling . Women’s teams include basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball .
