More experienced, more skilled, and more smarter is what describesthe 2009 edition of Ferris State University women’s volleyball as the

Bulldogs set their sights on a Great Lakes Intercollegiate AthleticConference (GLIAC) championship and a NCAA Division II Tournamentberth.

“We have all the makings to have a great season but performing at aconsistently high level will be the key,” said 14th-year FSU head coach TiaBrandel-Wilhelm. “I believe our players have a better grasp of how ourstructure fits into the team concept.”

But with a year of experience and a rigid spring season under theirbelts, the Bulldogs are poised to bounce back from last season’s 16-13record. FSU welcomes back 12 letterwinners from last year, which includesfive starters and its regular libero. The Bulldogs also return more than 85percent of their kills production, better than 83 percent of their blocks out-put, and at least 70 percent of the squad’s service aces.

“We have a lot of players back who received court time last season,”said Brandel-Wilhelm. “While that’s a positive, we’re looking for those whocan be consistent in their play. The ladies have performed with consistencyin practice and the spring scrimmages so now they just need to do the samein our matches.”

A notable change from this season’s team compared to the 2008 squadwill be in the Bulldogs’ style of play.

“We will be able to generate more offense than in the past few years,”stated Brandel-Wihelm. “A lot of our success this season will depend onour offense to score more points. We have considerable depth and a num-ber of offensive weapons with which to choose from.

“We will need them because this year’s schedule is one of the toughestwe’ve ever had. We’re sure to be tried and tested by our non-conferenceopponents,” added Brandel-Wilhelm. SETTER

Ferris State’s setting position will likely be the key to the Bulldogs’ 2009success. A new face will occupy the position this fall as both of last season’sregulars, Andrea Rich and Candice Marut have graduated. Both concludedtheir careers with over 1,000 assists apiece. Samantha Fordyce, who red-shirted a season ago, is expected to be the starter following a productivespring. MIDDLE BLOCKER

Ferris State’s most productive position could wellbe at the net as the Bulldogs return five blockersfrom last season’s squad. Highlighting the groupshould be as one of the conference’s top blockingtandems in senior Kristy Gilchrist and juniorArielle Goodson return. Gilchrist hopes to makethe most of her final year of collegiate competi-tion after placing second among the 2008 team’sleaders in blocks (79), third in kills (233), andfourth in service aces (23) en route to attain-ing honorable mention all-conference acco-lades. The 2007 All-GLIAC Second-Teampick recorded nine double-digit killmatch efforts a season ago while pacingor sharing the team lead in kills on sevenoccasions. She enters this fall currentlyranking tied for 27th place on FSU’s all-time leaders list with 48 service aces. Arapidly improving player, Goodson turned in anotherhighly-productive campaign last fall with single-season highs in about everystatistical category. A starter in 26 of the squad’s 29 matches, Goodson ledthe Bulldogs for the second consecutive season with a career season-best92 blocks. The 2008 All-GLIAC Second-Team honoree netted 16 block solosand 76 block assists as both represented team highs. She also placed sec-ond on the 2008 squad with a career-high 262-kills total and averaged ateam second-highest 2.43 kills per set. Goodson appears well on her way toetching her name in the program’s annals for blocking by ranking 23rd all-time in solos (37) along with 30th in both assists (145) and total rejections(182). Senior Sarah Lark should also play a key role in the Bulldogs’ suc-cess on the court following her most productive season in a Bulldog uniformlast fall. Lark’s 151 kills in 29 outings marked the team’s fifth highest totaland set a career single-season high as did her .208 hitting percentage. Shealso generated a career-best 52 blocks in 2008 to place fourth on thesquad’s blocking leaders list. As a result of her experience and leadership,Lark has been tabbed as a co-captain for the 2009 team. Danielle Hamiltonreturns for her junior year after playing in 10 matches last season whilesophomore Mallory Kopa was on the court in five encounters. Anne Sutton, who was redshirted last fall, could also figure in the equation. OUTSIDE HITTER

If there’s an area which may raise a question mark on the surface itprobably lies within the outside hitting position as Ferris State is limitedexperience wise. With the competition on the Bulldogs’ schedule this sea-son, this position will be vital to the team’s offensive production and subse-

quently, its success on the floor. The veteran of the youthful group is seniorKatie Edwards, who hopes to equal if not surpass her last season’s statisti-cal numbers. Edwards has proven capable of being a capable offensivethreat as evidenced by her hammering a squad-high 274 kills in 29 matcheslast season. She also led the team with a 2.49 kills per set average andchalked up double digits in kills 16 times. Edwards either led or shared topteam honors in kills on 14 occasions last fall and is eager to cap off a four-plus collegiate career with a flourish. Joining Edwards on the outside issophomore Ashley Huntey, who wound up tallying a team sixth-most 118kills to go with a team third-best 256 digs and a squad fifth-highest 22 ser-vice ace output in 29 matches. Amanda Kettlewell also returns to the foldfor her senior year and has been hampered by injuries throughout hercareer. Nevertheless, she posted 28 kills in 24 outings a season ago to rankseventh among the squad’s leaders. Sophomore Karen Thompson wasright behind Kettlewell in kills (26), but was able to showcase her versatilitywith a squad sixth-most 87 digs while being listed seventh in both serviceaces (11) and total blocks (13). Redshirt frosh Aly Brecht, an up-and-comingplayer, is expected to push the others for playing time. LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST

The Bulldogs welcome back experience and quality depth in this areawhich in turn will make multiple options available to the FSU coaching staff.Sophomore Lisa Tobiczyk is back as the incumbent at libero following anoteworthy display in her initial collegiate campaign. Tobiczyk amassed ateam-leading 374 digs and a squad-best 3.28 digs pet set in 29 appearanceslast season. She recorded double-figure dig totals in 21 matches, which fea-tured five 20 or more digs in a contest. Tobiczyk also proved to be effectivein serving with a team second-most 34 aces to go with a squad-leading .945serve percentage. For her efforts, she honored as a co-winner of the 2008team’s Bulldog Award for displaying the most heart and desire. An out-standing performer in the classroom, Tobiczyk not only landed a spot on theGLIAC All-Academic Team last season but also was recognized as the team’sFSU President’s Award recipient for maintaining the squad’s highest cumula-tive grade point average. A pair of talented juniors, Dana Ruttle andWhitney Rupp, are sure to challenge Tobiczyk for playing time and the levelof competition will be a benefit to all. Ruttle, a third-year junior, dispelledthe sophomore jinx last season by making the most of her on-courtexperience. A 2008 FSU Coaches Award co-recipient, Ruttle ended up third

among Ferris State’s leaders a season ago in service aces (24) andfourth in digs (164). Ruttle, a 2008 GLIAC All-Academic

Team pick, collected at least 10 digs in nine 2008matches. She will team up with Sarah Lark to serve asco-captains for the upcoming campaign. Rupp sawaction in 20 outings last fall while attaining GLIAC All-Academic Team accolades for the 2008 season. NEWCOMERS

Armed with arguably its best recruiting class inseveral years, Ferris State is in the process of

laying a solid foundation for future success. The combination of this year’s four-member group with last season’s class willhave a significant impact on the program’sfortunes. Don’t be surprised to see thenewcomers battle the regulars every step

of the way.

BRANDEL-WILHELM YEAR-BY-YEAR

COACHING ACCOLADESTIA BRANDEL-WILHELMHead Coach ◆ 14th Season

(Alma, 1990)

Tia Brandel-Wilhelm and the Ferris State University women’s volleyballprogram have become deeply intertwined as the Bulldog head coach getsset to embark on her 14th season at Ferris State in 2009.

Since becoming the program’s fifth head coach in June 1996, Brandel-Wilhelm has resurrected the program by guiding the Bulldogs to five NCAADivision II National Tournament appearances, which includes four of the lastsix years.

Success and Brandel-Wilhelm have become synonomous as the 2007 FerrisState squad recorded the program’s 10th consecutive winning campaign asBulldogs reached double-digits in victories for the 27th consecutive year with a20-10 overall record.

In 2004, Ferris State claimed its ninth Great Lakes Intercollegiate AthleticConference (GLIAC) Championship after winning the league’s annual postsea-son tournament for the first-time ever.

FSU also reached the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament under Brandel-Wilhelm in 2002. Since moving into Ewigleben (pronounced A-VAH-glave-in) Sports Arena from theHealth and Physical Education (HPE) Building in 1981, Ferris State has firmly

established a home-court advantage in its volleyball-only facility. The Bulldogs have posted an impressive 271-73 (.788) overall record at the

Ewigleben Sports Arena and compiled six undefeated home sea-sons (1984, ‘87, ‘89, ‘90, ‘96 and ‘02). ........................................................

The arena, located on the southwest end of campus, is namedafter former FSU President Dr. Robert L. Ewigleben. The 12th presi-dent in the University’s history, Ewigleben served in the positionfrom 1971-83.

With a seating capacity of 600 on the arena’s west side and astring of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)Championship banners on the east side, the Sports Arena has tran-spired through the years as an exceptionally challenging venue forFerris State’s opponents. Adding to the hostile environment are thevocal and highly-supportive fans. Capacity crowds at Ferris State

are nothing new as the Bulldogs led the nation in NCAA Division II volleyball atten-dance in 1989 while ranking seventh nationally in 1990 and 15th in 1997.

The volleyball arena is a part of FSU’s Sports Complex, which also houses themodern 2,400-seat Jim Wink Arena for basketball and the Ewigleben Ice Arena, thehome of Ferris State’s Division I men’s ice hockey program. Within the Sports Complexstructure is a varsity student-athlete weight room, athletic training facilities, a renovat-ed multipurpose room, locker rooms and athletics department staff offices.

In an on-going effort to attract top-quality student-athletes, a wood-surface playingcourt was installed at Ewigleben Sports Arena in the spring of 2001 and additional reno-vations were made to the appearance of the facility.

The Ewigleben Sports Arena has been the site of NCAA Division II RegionalChampionship Tournaments in 1982, ‘87 and ‘89. In both ‘87 and ‘89, Ferris State wonthe regional title and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

In 13 seasons under current head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, the Bulldogs are 124-33 overall at home. FSU is 84-31 in GLIAC outings and 40-2 in non-conference homeplay under Brandel-Wilhelm.

Ferris State holds the NCAA DivisionII record for consecutive matches won.The 1984 Bulldog squad won 46consecutive matches en route to a 48-3finish and an appearance in the NCAADivision II Regional Tournament.

The Ferris State women’s volleyball program hasbuilt an unmatched tradition since moving into

the Ewigleben Sports Arena in 1981. In an effort touphold FSU’s rich history, a campaign was launched inthe spring of 2004 to renovate and upgrade the pro-gram’s existing locker room facility.

The project, which was completed in the summer of2004, included the addition of 20 custom-built woodlockers, a study lounge and video room for dailyutilization. The renovation also entailed the installation of storage cabinets and new flooring toenhance the facility’s interior appearance.

The “Bulldog Rally” campaign funded a significant portion of the project through privatedonations, which were earmarked towards the renovation. The campaign solicited private finan-cial support to provide for the construction and installation of the custom-built lockers.

The upgraded locker room, combined with FSU’s volleyball-only playing surface in theEwigleben Sports Arena, continues to enhance Ferris’ ability to attract high quality student-ath-letes and provides current team members with the resources necessary to compete at the NCAADivision II level.
