‘World’s biggest encyclo-pedia’ serves up propa-ganda.

by Nicholas Stix

With almost 2.4 mil-

lion on-line entries, and more than 1million volunteer editors, theEnglish-language version of Wikipedia.com is the world’s  biggest encyclopedia, andaccording to the rating ser-vice Alexa it is the world’sninth-most frequently visitedInternet site. “The free ency-clopedia that anyone can edit” promises to deliver “the sum of all human knowledge.”

The theory is that since any-

one and everyone contributes,Wikipedia can become an es-sentially unlimited storehouseof information. With the helpof enough contributors, articleswill be accurate and compre-hensive—and in some cases, italmost works that way. If youin Tokyo, Wikipedia will tell you.

However, when it comes to contro-versial questions—race in particular— the everyone-is-an-editor model breaks

down. Wikipedia suffers from thesame liberal biases as any mainstream publisher, but exercises them evenmore ruthlessly. This is because manycontributors offer factual but subver-sive information—which forces manyWikipedia administrators to spend their time actively rooting it out.

Wikipedia’s origins go back to 2000,when Jimmy “Jimbo” Wales, then a por-nographer, and Larry Sanger, a doctoralstudent in philosophy at Ohio State Uni-

versity, founded the online encyclopedia“Nupedia.” Nupedia’s articles were to be written and vetted by experts, but thegoing was slow. Mr. Sanger suggestedusing “wiki” (“wikiwiki” is Hawaiianfor “fast”) software that would let any-one write articles, and came up with thename “Wikipedia.” The encyclopedia

2001, and immediately took off, soonto become one of the most frequentlyconsulted information sources on the In-ternet. Mr. Sanger set out on his own in

2002, and now presides over two other online encyclopedias, Digital Universeand Citizendium. Unlike Wikipedia, they are written by experts.

Mr. Wales consolidated his power

at Wikipedia and became an Internetcelebrity who can charge five-figurefees for speaking engagements. In 2003,Foundation to run Wikipedia, which heoffered to the foundation as a gift. Lastyear he claimed Wikipedia was worth$3 billion, so he must have taken a

handsome tax write-off. In

2008, the foundation had 14 paid staffers and an operat-ing budget of $4.6 million, most of which went tomaintaining 300 servers.

It is the million or sovolunteer editors who actu-ally keep Wikipedia going, and it is this cadre of “edi-tors” and more powerful“administrators” who havecoalesced into somethingof a leftist cult. It need nothave turned out this way.

The heart of the Wiki theoryis that anyone with a com-  puter can be an “editor.”Unless an article is lockedfor some reason—this israre—you can click on the“edit this page” tab andchange the article any way

Letters from ReadersSir — Roger Devlin makes some in-

teresting points in his “Reafricanizationof the West” in the June issue, but his ar-

gument is undermined by his misogyny. He seems to think that the only thingwomen can offer race realism is their wombs. This kind of retrograde thinkingis unhelpful, even boorish. Women willnot support a movement that sees themonly as breeding stock.

Janet Fielding, Boston, Mass.

Sir — I share Dr. Devlin’s concernthat whites are not reproducing, but canhe think of a way to induce the women

their careers, and their incomes in or-der to keep the white race from goingextinct? He writes as if the decrease infertility and marriage rates is the fault of snarling, “liberated” women with whomno sane man would wish to live, andthat white men must seek solace in thecompany of dusky but feminine peasantwomen from South America. Perhaps hegot it exactly the wrong way around. Isthere any chance that white men are sovapid and self-absorbed that no intel-ligent white woman will give them thetime of day? What, exactly, can F. Roger

Devlin, PhD, offer a woman that wouldmake her want to be the mother of hischildren?

Elizabeth Garnett, Limerick, Ireland

Sir — Roger Devlin is right thatwomen are attracted to high-status men, -tive action” raises the status of black men. Racial preferences do not increasesocial standing any more than welfare

does. Racial preferences put black menin places they shouldn’t be and therebyexpose them to more white women, butthat is all.

A better explanation for why white

women take up with blacks is the media portrayal of them as hyper-masculine.Television and movies glamorize black   pathology and portray white men aswimps and bumblers. White men withany testosterone are depicted as bruteswho treat women badly. Barack Obamamedia fetishizing.

Tom Rittenhauer, Cincinnati, Ohio

Sir — I would like to make two pointsabout Thomas Jackson’s review of

Abraham’s Children by Jon Entine (see“Who Are the Jews, AR, May 2008).First, it is a bit simplistic to accept the“Middle Eastern fathers” and “Europeanmothers” narrative of Ashkenazi origins, since the work of Behar and colleaguessuggests that at least 40 percent of Jew-ish maternal lineages likely have their origins in the Middle or Near East.

Second, Mr. Jackson’s enthusiasmfor Y chromosome and mitochondrialDNA studies as methods to determineEntine’s focus on those types of stud-

ies, is somewhat misguided. It is truethat they do not recombine, but theyare essentially acting as single loci in  population genetics studies, and youcannot determine ancestry by single lo-cus or “single site” markers. AutosomalDNA analyses are needed, and the mostrecent show that the Ashkenazim can beclustered separately from both northernand southern Europeans. Much morework on this subject is needed, whichmeans that Mr. Entine’s conclusions are

very premature.Ted Sallis, Tampa, Florida

Sir — Ed Zeman’s letter in the Juneissue suggests that the Confederacycould not have lasted six months if theslaves had not supported the Southerncause. The truth is more complex. It iscertain that slaves provided valuablelabor to the Confederate cause and thatmany were loyal to the cause because of  personal ties to their masters. It is alsoindisputable that there were no seriousslave uprisings during the war, but theactual enthusiasm of slaves for the Con-federacy is open to question.

When the Union Army arrived inthe South, slavery tended to dissolve, and many slaves turned against their masters. Escaped Union prisoners re- ported that slaves never betrayed them

to Confederate authorities. Many slaves provided intelligence to Federal forcesand many joined the enemy army. Of the 180,000 colored troops in Federalservice, the vast majority were either former or escaped slaves.

The focus of my remarks at the AR conference was the current neo-Confed-erate myth that the war had nothing todo with slavery or race, and that tens of the South. Other than a few companies,no Negro troops were ever raised bythe Confederacy. Many body servants, cooks, and wagon drivers were used bythe Confederate army but they were incombat only on the rarest of occasions. As a practical matter, the Negro Con-

federate Soldier is a myth.Martin K. O’Toole, Marietta, Ga.

Sir — Why the fuss in your Junesay “Jump White People”? They meantto write a word of encouragement towhite people who want to play better  basketball, but just forgot the comma

Mark Hurd, Brooklyn, N.Y.

punishment is harsh. Wikipedia’s Britishspokesman David Gerard once banned

an American critic, Judd Bagley, alongwith thousands of his Utah neighborswho were using the same Internet provider.

Wikipedia has rules for editors. Theyare supposed to adopt a “neutral pointof view” (NPOV), “assume good faith”on the part of other editors, be “civil,”refrain from “personal attacks” on eachother, not act as if they own certainarticles, avoid “legal threats” or “van-dalism,” and, whimsically, “ignore allrules:” “Every policy, guideline or any

other rule may be ignored if it hindersimproving Wikipedia.”

Because so many people tinker witharticles there are far more spats andstandoffs than at a publication with areal editor. Wikipedia has had to estab-lish a tangle of procedures for “editor assistance,” “third opinion,” “requestsfor comment,” “mediation cabal,”“mediation committee,” “requests for mediation,” “requests for adminship,”

“conflicts of interest,” “requests for arbitration,” et cetera.

redress to editors who think they have been abused, but administrators gener-ally close ranks and get help from other ideologically sympathetic editors whohope, themselves, to be  promoted to administra-tor. You could thereforeout how arbitration issupposed to work and -lows the rules. There have  been so many clashes, bruised feelings, outcasts,

and disgruntled former administrators and em- ployees that Wikipediacritics have started their own sites and blogs, mostnotably at wikipediareview.com.

The most zealous members of Wiki- pedia’s ideological enforcement brigadekeep lists of articles they want to keepideologically pure, and get instant elec-tronic updates if anyone changes them. Some enforcers even get feeds when-ever a particular editor they suspect of ideological impurity edits an article.

Zealous enforcers can instantly go tothe article and undo the changes. Thisis called stalking.

Some critics believe Wikipediais a personality cult built up aroundMr. Wales, but the leftist slant of the politics. He is said to be an “objectivist,”or admirer of Ayn Rand, who opposedfederal help for New Orleans after Ka-trina and hates gun control. He probablysettled for whoever would work for free,

and just lets the leftist cabal have its way.Only by dropping editorial standardscould Wikipedia get a massive force of volunteer labor.

Real encyclopedias are devoted tothe truth. For Wikipedia, however, “the-ity, not truth—meaning, in this context, whether readers are able to check thatmaterial added to Wikipedia has already  been published by a reliable source, not whether we think it is true.” When-tion of “reliable source” is anythingreliably left-wing. Sources can includeliberal college newspapers and evenwhat amount to fundraising letters fromthe Southern Poverty Law Center or theAnti-Defamation League. Wikipedia ar-ticles almost never cite the one mediumthat actually employs fact-checkers:magazines.

While real encyclopedias always pub-lish their editors’ names, Wikipedia’senforcers are obsessed with keepingtheir comrades’ identities secret. They

claim lives and jobs arein danger from stalkers. In fact, anonymity is the perfect shield for political bias and outright fraud.

a hard line against anything that could  be construed as libelous, it is a veri-table defamation factory. For over four newsman and Robert Kennedy aide JohnSeigenthaler, Sr. said he “was thoughtto have been directly involved in theKennedy assassinations of both John, and his brother Bobby.” When BrianChase of Nashville was tracked downas the source of this nonsense he saidhe thought Wikipedia was “some sortof ‘gag’ encyclopedia. . . . I didn’t think anyone would ever take it seriously for more than a few seconds.”

At various times, the entry for Nor-wegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenbergsaid he was a convicted pedophile whohad spent time in prison, and an SPLCstaffer wrote anonymously in the article

on Pope Benedict that the pontiff was a pedophile and an oppressor of women.Anonymous edits from the BBC andthe New York Times —the changes werePresident George W. Bush, whose articleis always in some degree of lockdown.

A certain amount of spite and prank- playing is inevitable in an encyclopediaanyone can edit—it’s surprising there

is not more—but the volunteers seemto guard articles about their fellow left-ies more carefully than they do articlesabout conservatives. There also seemsto be something of a siege mentality. In2007, Wikipediareview.com reportedknown as BADSITES that bans links to people or publications that have criti-cized Wikipedia.

The enforcers at Wikipedia ignorelarge swaths of entries that are nonpoliti-

cal or for which they do not have enoughcadres to police. However, biographies, especially of living people, are amongthe most hotly contested articles. Theytend to be either hagiographies or demonographies, depending on thesubject’s politics, race, or sexuality. Intheory, people are not supposed to editarticles about themselves, but this ruleto stick to the letter of the law by having proxies spruce up his entry.

Wikipedia’s articles on race paralleland sometimes even outdo the left-wing propaganda of schools, universities, andthe media. They generally take the fash-ionable view that there is no such thingas race. A typical entry about evolutionexplains that “a gene-centered view of evolution” shows the “inanity” of think-ing in terms of the evolution of “races”(with scare quotes). It warns that the

“seems to show that genetics could also be used for ideological purposes,” andimplies that anyone who acknowledgesthe reality of race has sympathies for  Nazism.

The article on racism is more than10,000 words long, and is careful toexplain that “racial discrimination istreating people differently through a process of social division into categoriesnot necessarily related to race” (empha-sis added). Skepticism about the realityof race disappears, however, when it

comes to charging whites with discrimi-nation. The same article approvinglycites “sociologist and former AmericanSociological Association president JoeFeagin [who] argues that the UnitedStates can be characterized as a ‘totalracist society’ because racism is usedto organize every social institution.” Welearn further that in Mr. Feagin’s view,“today, as in the past, racial oppression. . . pervades, permeates, and intercon-nects all major social groups, networks, and institutions across the society.”

The breathless, almost 10,000-word

entry on Martin Luther King, Jr. as-serts that Mr. King never had communistassociates and was never unfaithful tohis wife: “The FBI began wiretappingKing in 1961, fearing that CommunistsMovement, but when no such evidenceemerged, the bureau used the incidentaldetails caught on tape over six yearsin attempts to force King out of the preeminent leadership position.” “Inci-dental details” is a delicate reference to

womanizing. As for Communism, the article settles

the question by quoting King as saying,“There are as many Communists in thisfreedom movement as there are Eskimosin Florida.” The article simply ignoresthe communist convictions of King’sclose associates Stanley Levison andHunter Pitts “Jack” O’Dell, and saysnothing about King’s relations with thecommunist Highlander Folk School and its founder, Myles Horton. Neither the article on King nor the school men-tions any connection between the two.

Wikipedia explains that the FBI re-cordings only sound like adultery: “[M]uch of what was recorded was, as quoted by his attorney, speech-writer and closefriend Clarence B. Jones, ‘midnight’talk or just two close friends jokingaround about women.” In fact, evensympathetic biographies by historian

David Garrow, black studies professor Michael Eric Dyson, historian Taylor Branch, and a memoir by King’s bestfriend, Ralph David Abernathy, makeit clear that King had a prodigious ap-  petite for mistresses and prostitutes.Mr. Branch even quotes one of King’sexcited outbursts with a woman not hiswife: “I’m f***ing for God!”

The article tries to deceive read-ers about Mr. Abernathy’s memoire, claiming that “Abernathy says that heonly wrote the term ‘womanizing,’

extramarital sex.” The citation linksto an interview transcript in which Mr.Abernathy says no such thing. Frequentof “womanizing”—inspired televisionhumorist Stephen Colbert to joke thatas liberators.”

The article ignores King’s supportfor racial preferences and promotesthe now-obligatory view that King wasdevotedly color-blind. It claims he wascommitted to non-violence, whereas headmitted he valued violence for its high

publicity value. The article buries a brief mention of King’s plagiarism toward theend, well out of chronological order, Brown

v. Board of Education would have read-ers believe it was a popular, constitution--sion, and that its few opponents wereIt fails to mention that Kenneth Clark’ssocial science, which formed the basis

No communist pals, no adultery.

of the court’s decision, was fraudulentor that Clark’s testimony was essentially perjury. Needless to say, the article citesno books by conservatives such as Ray-mond Wolters or Paul Craig Robertsthat correct the liberal myth. Nor doesthe article mention the   Harvard Law

Review’s (vol. 100:817, 1987) extensiveaccount of Solicitor General Philip El-man’s illegal, back-door collusion withJustice Felix Frankfurter to twist thecourt toward desegregation.

The article on affirmative action aggressively supports it. The criticismsit offers are tame: beneficiaries getan unfair stigma, for example. Earlier versions used to concede that blacksare admitted to top colleges with muchlower SAT scores than whites, but thatfrom mentioning any of the eye-openingaccounts of the consequences of hiring

unqualified non-whites, it takes theastonishing position that people whowhites:

“That is, since individuals in such -tive action—systematically excluded, and since the groups are composed of individuals that are otherwise equal toothers, such groups have a higher pro-  because they are normally excluded.”

The article on redlining gives theimpression that before the 1968 Fair

Housing Act and 1977 CommunityReinvestment Act, which forced banks

to lend to non-whites with bad credit, itwas impossible for blacks or Hispanicsto get mortgages. This is, of course, false. Before those laws, millions of  blacks grew up in homes their parents bought with mortgages, and since blacksand whites were held to the same creditstandards, their default rates were thesame. The article does not point outthat the changes in the law have drivendefault rates by blacks and Hispanics far higher than the white rate.

In this connection, the article aboutDetroit’s 1967 race riot, which islargely a laundry list of excuses for violence, offers the following incongru-ous sequence:

“After the riot, respondents to a  Detroit Free Press poll listed poor housing as the second most importantissue leading up to the riot, right behind police brutality.

“Detroit had the highest home own-ership rate among black people in thenation. . . .” Presumably, they all paidcash. The article strains to avoid givingthe impression the riot had anything todo with race, and the 4,000-word entryis inexplicably entitled “12th StreetRiot.”

Not surprisingly, the article on theCivil Rights Act of 1964 offers noreason but “racism” for opposing thisenormous federal intrusion into freedom

of association. The nearly 6,000-wordarticle on the Civil Rights Movement issimply bizarre, opening as follows:

“Historically, the civil rights move-ment was a concentrated period of timearound the world of approximately onegeneration (1960 -1980) wherein therewas much worldwide civil unrest and popular rebellion.” The article includesthe Communist-inspired German stu-dent movement and the Chinese CulturalRevolution in this imaginary worldwidecivil rights movement.

The section on America mixes black

and Hispanic nationalism with nos-talgia for Communism: “Later in themovement’s trajectory, groups like theBlack Panther Party, the Young Lords, the Weathermen and the Brown Beretsturned to more militant tactics to make arevolution that would overthrow capital-ism and establish, in particular, self-de-termination for resident U.S. minoritiesthe American civil rights movement, butthey have different names.

Wikipedians routinely portray blacks—even criminals—as heroes or

victims, and censor accounts of blackswho misbehave. Entries on prominent black-on-white atrocities leave out race, the article may explain that race wasirrelevant. By contrast, articles on white-on-black atrocities, such as the JamesByrd and Emmett Till cases, emphasizeracial animus as the primary motive.Anyone who explores the racial char-acter of black-on-white crime or whocondemns the media for covering it up

is a “racist” or “white supremacist.”In many media accounts of crime,

photographs are the only clue to theraces of perpetrator and victim. Wiki- pedia deliberately withholds this clue.Censors have repeatedly removed all photographs from the article on theWichita Massacre (see “The WichitaMassacre,” AR, August 2002). The entryon the February 2008 massacre at the Kirkwood, Missouri, city council lacksany photographs of the black assailantvictims, and ignores race completely.

For over a year, the entry for theDuke rape hoax (the article is titledsimply “Duke Rape”) showed picturesof the three falsely charged Duke la-crosse players, while censors hid thename of Crystal Gail Mangum, the black “exotic dancer.” Both before and after

the players were cleared, censors deletedentire stories on Miss Mangum. The en-try now contains no photographs, thoughit makes no attempt to conceal race.

As information began to surface onthe Knoxville carjacking-kidnapping-rape-torture-murders of ChannonChristian and Christopher Newsom(see “The Knoxville Horror,” AR, July

2007), a number of editors initiallyfought the Wikipedia enforcers’ usualtactic of censorship and cited dozens of mainstream media articles. True to form,a series of censors deleted them, alongwith photographs and anything else thatthat only “racists” could believe thecrime might be racially motivated or thatmedia coverage had been biased. Theycited interest in the crime by “racists”as a reason to downplay the story. Wiki-

Christian and Newsom.

pedia suddenly demonstrated delicatescruples about the possibility of libel, insisting that Christian and Newsom had“allegedly” been murdered, and that itwas impossible to know whether murder the victims had been raped.

In June 2007, administrators lockeddown the article while they deleted all photographs and references to my own

in-depth research on the crime. Theytook the ultimate revenge against the person who initially wrote about themurders, and banned him permanentlyfrom contributing to Wikipedia.

Surprisingly, there is an article onrace and crime but one learns nothingabout the subject. Countless times, edi-tors have added statistics on black crimerates, interracial crime, and comparisonsof racial crime rates, only to see themcensored. The most aggressive censor calls himself “Yuchigai,” and insiststhat anyone who tries to include

crime statistics is guilty of “POV(point of view) pushing.” He warns,“Remove unwelcome information. (e.g. inter-racial crime) do NOT belong in this section.”

Wikipedia is nervous about hav-ing any article at all on this subject, and the jumpier censors have urgedthat it be removed. Instead, it openswith a statement that all historicaldiscussions of high black crime -ism.” The article then repeats Wiki-

pedia orthodoxy, claiming that “culturalanthropology and neo-Darwinian syn-thesis . . . demonstrated that the category -mate,” and links recognition of race to“the racial policies of the Third Reich.”In case readers stumble onto statisticselsewhere, the article warns: “Crime sta-tistics should be considered with cautionreality. Correlation between two factorsdoes not imply causation . . . .”

Since statistics are verboten, the morethan 2,000-word entry on -ing  promotes the myth that innocent blacks are constantly targeted by policemerely because of skin color. It suggeststhat if blacks really are arrested andconvicted more often than whites it isonly because police are so suspiciousof them.

A paragraph on the accidental, fatalshooting of Amadou Diallo by New“critics feel that the police were suspi-cious of Diallo simply because he was a black man walking down the street after midnight.” Diallo was not just walk-ing down the street. He was an illegalimmigrant standing in the vestibule of his building who panicked when policeshowed up. He failed to respond to com-mands, and whipped something out of his pocket police thought was a gun.

neighborhood and approached Dialloserial rapist.

The article has links only to tenden-those from the ACLU. Whenever any-one adds links to studies debunking themyth, left-wing censors remove them.

Rodney King contains no less than threeerrors: It calls Mr. King a “taxicabdriver,” it claims the Los Angeles police

him (making it sound as though he wasalready under their control), and insiststhat “there is no part of the tape thatIt is well known that when George Hol-liday brought his amateur video to TVstation KTLA, a staffer edited out theopening sequence that showed Mr. King was the censored version that the world

saw over and over.Wikipedia readers will not learn that

Mr. King had led two dozen CaliforniaHighway Patrol and Los Angeles police -cause he was violating parole. Readerswill not learn that Mr. King’s two black  passengers did as police told them andwere unharmed. Readers will not learn -ing technique,” in which four men eachgrab an arm or a leg, but Mr. King tossedthem off with “superhuman strength.”They will not learn that Mr. Kingwould not go down even after beingstopped a black driver, pulled him out of his car, and started beating him.

Curiously, the article on the Los An-geles Riots of 1992 includes much of the

information missing from the article onRodney King. Still, it strives mightilyto deny that it was a race riot, and playsdown the lethal violence done to whites, calling it “the occasional murder.”

The article blames the riots in part onanger over the light sentence given to a49-year old Korean convenience-storeowner, Soon Ja Du, for fatally shootingon March 16, 1991. It fails to note thatthe strapping Miss Harlins, who was probably shoplifting, had badly beaten

the diminutive Mrs. Du. It also

fails to report the constant shoplift-ing, 30 burglaries, and two armedrobberies—one only seven daysearlier—the Du family had sufferedfrom blacks, or the nine Koreanswho had been murdered by blacksin convenience store robberies dur-ing the previous year alone.

and beaten with bricks and baseball batsair.” Twenty-four hours later one of thecensors removed this carefully sourcedmaterial, explaining that he had takenout “sensationalizing statements & re-has never been restored.

Articles about foreign countries areno better. The more than 10,000 wordsabout Zimbabwe offer many detailsabout Robert Mugabe’s “human rightsabuses” against blacks, but whites arevictims of nothing more serious than“eviction” because of “the controversial

land redistribution of 2000.” Likewise, the 11,400-word article about South

Africa says nothing about the threatswhites face or the authorities’ indif-ference to their murder and disposses-sion.

Wikipedia’s treatment of pro-white or race-realist groups is transparent propa-ganda. The article on white nationalismreminds readers that the very concept of race is “an anthropological archaism,”and suggests only two possible positionson race: multiculturalism or neo-Na-zism. It writes admiringly of anti-whitegroups as “anti-racist organizations,”while treating anyone sympathetic to

whites with hostility and skepticism.Any concern for the survival of whitesis nothing more than “the repackaging, relabeling, and transformation of whitesupremacy into something that wouldappeal to a broader, more educatedaudience.” Conclusion: “The AmericanRenaissance, Council of ConservativeCitizens, the National Alliance and National Vanguard are . . . widely rec-ognized as white supremacist and racistgroups.”

Censors have regularly sought entire-ly to delete the entry for the pro-whitethink tank, the National Policy Institute (I should note that I served proudly asthe director for one of its projects—see“How Whites Stack Up,” AR, August2007), claiming the institute is not “no-table” and therefore does not deservean entry. Editor “Closedmouth” deletesall the information that explains why itcomplains that the “article may not meetthe notability guidelines for companiesand organizations.”

The article about American Renais- sance has been constantly vandalized.AR is invariably “racialist” or “a month-ly white separatist magazine.” Anyonewho dares to call it “race-realist” is promptly censored. It is obvious the cen-sors have never read the magazine, andcite only hostile opinion columns and

public-relations mailings from “anti-racists” who have barely read it either. Here is one description of the magazine:“Some issues of AR have featured theo-logical arguments. One argument has been that interracial and inter-culturalmarriage is racial suicide and an unequalyoking, and that such unions ‘go againstthe very community which marriage isdesigned to establish’.”

For brief periods the article has beendescriptive and neutral, including theviews of critics, but that is unacceptable. Most of the time, perhaps 90 percent

is criticism, with scarcely any attemptto describe AR’s goals or arguments. This note from a censor calling himself Skylab reveals both his ignorance and  bias: “Personally, I would rather justnever have to read about these hysteri-cal racists. However, I came across thisarticle by accident and felt I shouldcontribute to it.”

At one time the entry for the NewCentury Foundation was a meaty piecethat cited both The Color of Crime andits critics, but it has been cut down to

NCF is essentially a neo-Nazi organi-zation and that The Color of Crime issemi-literate rubbish. “Possecomitatus”was unintentionally revealing when heexplained why he changed referencesto the report: “The Color of Crime:Removed words that made this soundlikeoit [sic] was researched by seriousepaopl.” [sic]

The article about Jared Taylor be-came such a battleground that Wikipedialocked it down for several months. It has

since been reopened, but as one well-meaning editor discovered, anything butcriticism is unwelcome:

“I tried to insert some actual, substan-tial quotes from Taylor that might havesomething to do with this subject andgive an actual feel for Taylor’s beliefsand they were promptly deleted with therationale that they were just ‘a plug for Taylor’s views.’ Uh, excuse me, but isthis [a part of the article called “Views”]not supposed to be a section on Taylor’sviews?”

Blacks get different treatment. Leon-ard Jeffries, Kamau  Kambon, andFrances Cress Welsing have all calledon blacks to kill all whites (Mr. Jeffriesexpressed this more as a wish), but Wiki- pedia calls none of these people “racist”or “black supremacist.” Censors saythat such terms are against Wikipediarules that require an NPOV. Someone

who calls himself Malik Shabazz haseven eliminated the word “controver-sial” from the article about Mr. Jeffries, calling it “POV,” or biased. Wikipediaseems to accept the dogma that onlywhites can be “racist.”

As with black criminals, censors keep

out unpleasant facts. Readers will notlearn that Mr. Jeffries’s students reportedhim as saying, “If I had my way, I’dwipe them [whites] off the face of theearth.” Dr. Welsing’s article does use theR-word, but only indirectly—“Welsinghas been criticized for allegedly [empha-sis added] promoting an overtly racistideology”—but there is no mention of the genocidal core of her thinking. OnlyMr. Kambon’s entry sometimes noteshis call for blacks to exterminate all

whites—and only when the energetic“Yahel Guhan” has not taken it out.

It would be easy to cite more ex-amples, but the point is clear: Wiki-  pedia actively purveys and reinforcesthe prejudices of our time. I see it asa cross between an Internet message board and today’s authoritarian, multi-cultural university. Or, as co-founder Larry Sanger, himself a liberal, wrotein June 2006, “Wikipedia has gone froma nearly perfect anarchy to an anarchywith gang rule.”

But isn’t conventional myth-makingabout race exactly what we would ex- pect? Why should Wikipedia be any dif-ferent from the New York Times or CBS

or New York University Press? It should be different because the Internet is far more free-wheeling and undeceived thanthe New York Times. People who actu-ally know what they are talking aboutoften correct stories in ways that forceWikipedia’s censors to face what reallyhappened. Editors at the Times probablydo not often have to make a decisionabout deliberately removing a relevant,well-researched fact simply because it jars their political sensibilities.

This is not to let the Times entirelyoff the hook. The truth is there for anyone willing to look for it. However, people with a certain political bent donot look for the truth, so are unaware

of it, and are spared the unpleasantnessof explicitly censoring it. Unlike whathappens at CBS or the Times, truth of aninconvenient kind creeps unbidden intoWikipedia articles, from which it must be forcibly removed. What distinguishesthe censors at Wikipedia is that they dothis regularly and cheerfully. It is this that makes Wikipedia far more culpablethan “mainstream” organs that do noth-ing more than pass along to readers their own ignorance and assumptions.

European Nationalism on the March

Lessons for Americans.

by Gregory Hood

The speaker strode casually tothe podium in front of the silentcrowd. In a conversational tone,

as if he had done it a thousand times, hesaid quietly, “Eigen volk…” “ Eerst!”thundered back the one thousand stronggathered in Hendrik Conscience Plaza.

It is May Day in Antwerp, Belgium. To this crowd of Vlaams Belang (Flem-

ish Interest) supporters, it is the heartof the Occupied Republic of Flanders.Along with two other Americans, Iam listening to speaker after speaker denounce the tyranny of the Belgianstate, of all things. Of course, eachfiery sermon against the perfidy of Brussels is given in Dutch, and I relyon the patience of nearby translators.separatist party dedicated to breaking upan already small European country has become the hope of Western patriots theworld over and the driving force beyond

a European-wide movement for racialand cultural survival.Belgium, as each speaker points out,

is the bastard child of anachronisticGreat Power politics. French-speakingWalloons and Dutch-speaking Flemingswere clumsily shoved together under a freshly created monarchy in 1830 tocreate a neutral buffer-state to the northof post-Napoleonic France. Two worldwars have shown that this project didnot ensure peace, but Belgium endured

and became the centerpiece of another misbegotten scheme, the EuropeanUnion. Belgium is the headquarters of the continent-wide bureaucracies thatare strangling the once proud nationsof the Old World. In the new Europe

of mass immigration, “hate speech”laws, and a continent-wide currency,Belgium is the original post-national, post-European nation.

And yet, in the heart of the new left-  bureaucrats of Brussels did not counton the stubborn Flemish nation, whosehistory can be summarized as the refusal

to accept decisions others make for it.One of the formative events of Flemishhistory, the 1302 Battle of the GoldenSpurs, was the defeat of an army of mounted French nobility by Flemish peasants and townspeople armed with

pikes. Today, the Flemish people’s armyis the Vlaams Belang, a party feared bythe European political class, repressed  by the Belgian government, and con-demned by the media, but that continuesfrom triumph to triumph.

The Vlaams Belang fights for thesecession of Dutch-speaking Flandersfrom Beligum to form an independent

nation. The party is socially conserva-tive, perhaps the only serious party inWestern Europe that campaigns againstabortion, homosexual marriage, anddrugs. It is pro-capitalist, and opposesthe transfer of wealth from the largelylasseiz-faire Flemings to the more so-cialist, French-speaking Walloons in thesouth. Most explosively, it condemnsimmigration as a biological and culturalthreat to the Flemish  people, and opposesthe Islamization of Europe.

That is why the par-ty—then known as theVlaams Blok—was  banned by the gov-ernment and forcedto reorganize under anew name. All other   parties in Belgium

have imposed a cor-don sanitaire, refus-ing to give it the coali-tion entrée to power to which its electoralresults would ordi-narily entitle it. Thefederal governmentof Belgium continuesto think of ways to cut off the party’sfunding, arrest its members, or again ban it outright

The VB is nevertheless the largest  party in the Flemish parliament and

works actively with other European na-tionalist movements, especially the Na-tional Front in France. It was the youthwing of the party that organized the MayDay conference we are attending. It iscalled the Day of the Right-Wing Youth, and activists from all over Europe have  been invited to form a united frontagainst the eradication of their cultures.we Americans were welcomed warmly. We spent several days studying andlearning from a movement that has no parallel in the United States. The Euro-

pean Right has many lessons for thosetrying to build resistance in America.

The May Day rally had no problemwith leftists, thanks in large part to VBsecurity, which guarded all entrances.Party activists also made sure everythingran smoothly, monitoring microphonesand sound equipment, and arrangingtransportation. After the last speech, weall took buses to a huge hall where wecelebrated with food, drinks, and music.

The rally was more carefully plannedand better attended than a typical Re- publican campaign rally.

Despite this, it never felt script-ed. Men, women, and young peoplelaughed, drank, and sang historicalsongs without the kind of political jock-eying and maneuvering that character-izes most partisan gatherings. Famous  party leaders such as Filip Dewinter

and Frank Vanhecke moved through thecrowd, listening to the stories of the oldand drinking beer with the young, notworking the room, but simply spend-

ing time with people who clearly knewthem and respected them, but were notawed by them.

The atmosphere was that of a Fourthof July party in a small Midwesterntown. Everyone was comfortable cel-ebrating a common heritage with friendsand comrades. Party members ensurefamily-friendly events like this whilea polished, professional, and savvy or-ganization builds a movement that cancapture political power one step at a time by appealing to everyday people. -

ment of different groups hawking shirts, posters, mugs, and books, which addedto a kind of carnival atmosphere. Not for since we wanted to buy everything.

Impressed by the rally (and none theworse for Flemish beer), we staggeredinto the street and met some college-aged party members. We learned thatmembers of the Nationalistische Stu-denten Vereniging (or NSV—Nation-alist Student Organization) would be

having their initiation that night at a lo-cal bar. What followed taught us another lesson: the importance of a nationalistsubculture that opposes the dominantanti-white mass culture.

We expected to laugh at casual haz-ing while drunk kids made fools of themselves, but what we saw was far more interesting. In a catacomb-like

white, and red hor-izontal stripes, em- blazoned with theFlemish Lion andthe letters “NSV.”men and womenin caps and sashesover casual clothessolemnly sang theDutch nat ionalanthem, followed

by the “Lion of Flanders,” the pre-sumptive Flemishnational anthem.Every initiate hadnationalist sym-  bols and stickers, containing dozens

of patriotic songs from Flanders, the  Netherlands, and around the world. Each would rise on signal and sing aselection, to the boisterous approval of their seniors. The songs, the customs,

and slogans of this fraternity speak of the battles of the past and glories to bewon in the future.

down. This is not a political meeting, buta coed political fraternity: college kidsrejoicing in their heritage and comrade-ship, singing the songs of their fathersand grandfathers. They drink staggeringamounts, but the atmosphere is joyful, never vulgar or cheap.

The NSV is not an ancient or secretorganization. It was started in 1976, in

the modern era of fanatical anti-racismand anti-white prejudice, and grew fromthe ground up. Many modern leaders of the Vlaams Belang started their careersin the Flemish movement as members of the group. The evening we were there,  NSV alums—some are now electedsinging, like graduates back on campusfor homecoming.

The NSV is not just a social club. Itis a political force, which participates

in demonstrations, marches, and directactions. A casual search for “NSV” onYouTube reveals an organization that isfar more committed, active, and coura-geous than any comparable conserva-tive group in America. From ripping

the face of the Belgian king (and beingarrested for their trouble), marching, putting up signs, facing down hundredsof screaming lefties, or even just slap- ping “Rechts Vlaams Studentikoos”(Rightist Flemish Students) stickers allover Antwerp, the NSV has created acadre of young people with a healthy

sense of national identity.  people, not for an impressive resume or a lame job on Capitol Hill. Nor are theyout to shock. Their magazines cover awide range of Indo-European history, philosophy, theology, and even biology. They are students who can discourse onJulius Evola one minute and go back toheavy metal or soccer the next. They arenormal kids doing things that, to Ameri-can eyes, seem extraordinary.

The NSV is a kind seedbed for theVB, though the two organizations are

not formally connected, and some mem- bers of the NSV are not members of theVB (some think it is too moderate). A background in street activism and even astint in a Belgian jail for defending freespeech are credits, a ticket towards thetop of the party, rather than indiscretionsto be denied and apologized for, as theywould be in the American conservativeestablishment. A VB leader once saidthat “the youth movement is not radicalenough . . . it should be driving the party

to the right and keeping it true to its prin-ciples.” In America, conservative youthorganizations often try to tame strongactivists, turning campus radicals into poorly-paid Hill staffers or party hackswho, in turn, explain the latest betrayalto the grassroots.

The drunken kids we saw that nightwere the same people manningtables, collectingforms, servingfood, and doingthe grunt work at the Day of  the Right WingYouth. Within afew years, theywill be runningconferences andwinning public

political organi-zation in Americacomes close totheir dedication, activism, or en-

thusiasm. No organization even exists inAmerica that can channel young peoplewith good instincts into productive andhealthy political and social action. Whatthe NSV represents is an entire subcul-ture capable of continuously generatingnew recruits.

The VB keenly understands theimportance of the subculture. Political

movements are built on volunteer poli-tics: Every minute spent for the cause isa minute taken away from work, family,or friends. It is therefore extremely im- portant that political work be combinedas much as possible with fun and friend-me, “The movement would not be whereit is if it were not for drinking.” This wasnot entirely a joke. The VB understandsthat well-organized social events accom- plish a great deal on their own.

Something else we learned was theimportance of a physical base. In the

heart of Antwerp is an unimposing little pub called the Leeuw van Vlaanderen(the Lion of Flanders) and known as “the beast.” Inside this Flemish nationalist pub, surrounded by other bars and tour-ist traps, is an extraordinary collectionof posters, stickers, framed pictures, and patriotic music that create an atmospherethat does not exist anywhere in America. At any hour, students, politicians, and patriotic Flemings can be found drink-ing, reading, or discussing the issues of

the day. The Lion of Flanders and other nationalist pubs are places to network and meet new potential activists, to buildsolidarity and comradeship.

Even on our short trip we made useof “the beast.” A group of leftists was tohold a pro-marijuana rally in the center of the city, and we had heard that theVlaams Belang Youth was going tocounter-demonstrate. Our small groupof foreigners had no idea where to meetthe protesters or what route the protestwould take. But we did know about theLion of Flanders. Sure enough, we foundthe VB continent there and were ableto offer reinforcements. We had a goodtime taunting the hippies, who wereeventually dragged away and arrestedfor trying to plant marijuana on public property. It was a small triumph, but wecould take part simply because we knewabout a central location.

After professionalism and the impor-tance of a subculture, the third lessonof our trip was the need for serious political education. During the confer-ence, we hammered out consensus onsubtle political issues such as “subsid-iarity” and what constitutes “culturalrelativism.” This was a challenge for groups that spoke at least six differentlanguages and various regional dialects. The result was a spirited and extremelyerudite, multi-lingual discussion thatled to resolutions on larger issues (suchas what European identity means) and

Turkey joining the EU).Creating an intellectual tradition is

just as important as creating an activisttradition. It keeps efforts grounded, pri-orities clear, and keeps policy statements

from falling into clichés or sloppy think-ing. Political education also preventsthe movement from becoming co-optedor distracted from its original goals inthe way the American conservativemovement has been co-opted. A typicalVlaams Belang activist is far more edu-cated and historically conscious than atypical Republican activist. Ideologicaldedication tends to correlate with in-

creased activism. The last important lesson we learned

from the Day of the Right Wing Youthalso raised the most questions in mymind: It was the issue of localism. TheVlaams Belang, it should be said, is notan explicit race consciousness move-ment, and would be uncomfortable to  be associated directly with American Renaissance . It defends Europe andWestern Civilization and opposes im-migration, but it is essentially a Flemishnationalist movement. It is a secessionist  pan-racial movement.

Many of the parties at the confer-ence were also localist and secessionist. There were Brittany separatists, Alsaceseparatists, and the Lega Nord of Italy. Some have argued that localism mayhold the key to saving Europe, andit is true that with the decline of the

French National Front, the strongest pro-Western (if not explicitly pro-white)movements in Europe are the VlaamsBelang and the Lega Nord.

Many separatists describe themselvesas “identity” activists. As a Breton sepa-ratist said, “French is no longer a realidentity. National identity is bound to theFrench state and the French state gives passports and citizenship to anyone whomoves into the country, whether theyhave a connection with the preexisting people and culture or not. Anyone, atthis point, can be French, or Belgian,

or British, which means that it doesn’tmean anything. With our movement, easier to build a system that will pre-serve our culture.”

This is a plausible approach to the key  problem white activists face, namely, that the traditional institutions manyof us defend—our nation states—arenow biased in favor of non-whites.Separatism is a blow against thesecorrupt institutions. At the same time, while organizing as “whites” drawssuspicion and criticism, it is far more

“acceptable” to organize as Flemish or Basque. Separatist cultures and regionaltraditions also make it much easier tocreate the subculture necessary for astrong movement.

Of course, this approach is not with-out drawbacks. The late Sam Francisonce called neo-Confederate movements“infantile.” He said we should organizeas whites to reclaim the whole country, not defend small sections of it. Other groups at the conference took the same

position. A lone BNP activist arguedthat breaking up the United Kingdomwould make it easier for the EU to takemore control. A Spanish activist wasadamantly opposed to Basque indepen-dence, which other localists supported. He said Spain was the product of severalindependent kingdoms joining together

to achieve Reconquista from the Moors, and that unity, not division, was what theWest needed today.

Indeed, there is nothing inherent inseparatist movements that guaranteesthey will be pro-white. Basque separat-ists are extremely left wing, as is theScottish National Party. At the same

time, the so-called identity movementsencourage division among whites.Brittany separatists and National Frontwork together against common foes. TheHungarian nationalists who attended theconference are working to restore lostterritory populated by ethnic Hungar-ians. They would be weaker if they werealso trying to split the country apart. Andyet it is undeniable that the Lega Nordand the VB are among the most promis-ing movements on the continent.

Separatism should be understood as a

tactic rather than as an ideology. Flemishindependence makes sense because theFlemings are clearly a distinct peoplewith their own language, culture, andcustoms. On a more practical level, theyare also economically exploited by theBelgian state, so ordinary people mayfavor Flemish independence if only for economic reasons.

The Brittany separatists have a casefor independence, but Breton identityis not nearly so strong or widespread as

Flemish identity. The Breton languagewhile the Flemish dialect of Dutch isthe living language of Flanders. Still,Breton identity may prove a useful tacticfor winning local elections and gettingwhites to think about their heritage.

-cilor said to me, “I know everyone in mycommunity and respond to their con-cerns. As a result, even non-nationalistswill say to me, well, I think Dewinter is a fascist but you are a good guy andI’ll vote for you. The ironic thing isDewinter is a leftist compared to me!”Western patriots need to build power from the ground up at the smallest level possible and grow gradually. People willrespond to movements that serve their local interests, and power will follow.

We can win these struggles, and partieslike the Vlaams Belang are showing theway. But the hard truth is that it takesslow, painful, grassroots organizing tosucceed. To adopt a cliché, white activ-ists must think globally but act locally. We need to build institutions that can ap- peal to normal people who do not think

all the time about politics or race. Weneed to develop a subculture that pro-duces educated and dedicated activistswho will donate their time and talents both out of ideological commitment and because what they are doing is fun.

Finally, we need to recognize thatwhere we can do the most good is rightwhere we live: We should run for school

board, become local party delegates, start a campus newspaper or a school parents’ organization. There are con-servative organizations that will train  beginning activists in the science of organizing.

I came home fully intending to go

back to Flanders, but I also recognizethat we can’t look to exciting move-ments overseas to save us. We are all part of the great white Western racialfamily, but we need to work wherewe can do the most good with peoplewhom we know, understand, and love.

In this sense, we can understand thedouble meaning of the Vlaams Belang’sslogan:   Eigen Volk Eerst . “Our OwnPeople First.”

BNP Candidate Wins Seat on London Assembly

A historic breakthroughfor British nationalism.

by Roberta Woods

On May 2, 2008, Richard Barn- brook was elected to the LondonAssembly—the equivalent of the

city council—thus reaching the highest (BNP) or any other so-called far right party has ever attained in Britain. Thisvictory, which shocked the establish-ment, came despite hostile media anda huge campaign against the BNP. This breakthrough shows the party is a cred-ible political force and has the potentialto serve at all levels of government.

To understand the significance of this victory it helps to know somethingof the history of London’s governing  bodies and of Ken Livingstone, the

city’s famously left-wing former mayor.of local government in London was theGreater London Council. Mr. Living-stone, an open Trotskyite, arch-multi-culturalist, and BNP nemesis, presidedover the council from 1981 to 1986,during which time it was a thorn in theside of the Conservative government. He lavished tax money on cheap publictransport, but especially on homosexu-als, pet ethnic minorities, immigrants, and others who were a solid electoral base for the Labour Party.

In 1986, Margaret Thatcher abol-ished the Greater London Council, and distributed its powers among theLondon borough councils, leaving noLondon-wide authority. Many thoughtthis was the end of “Red” Ken, but theywere wrong. He reemerged when theLabour government under Tony Blair came to power in 1997 and establishedthe London-wide Greater London Au-thority. This is composed of the electedLondon Assembly, which is headed by

a mayor with powers similar to those of the mayor of New York. Members of theassembly oversee the decisions of themayor and can amend the city budget.Their powers are limited, but the jobParliament.

All the established political partiescompete keenly in the campaign for mayor, but it is also a chance for smaller   -ties are ostensibly running for mayor butthey do not expect to win. Instead, theyhope to get enough votes to win one of

Fourteen assembly seats representLondon borough constituencies, with -sentation from party lists. Any party thatassured of at least one seat.

When the first London Assembly

elections were held in 2000, Ken Living-stone emerged, phoenix-like, to becomecontinue his socialist policies. London Britain to use proportional representa-tion, however, and there was always fear

within the main parties that upstarts such barrier and get on the assembly. In 2000,the BNP’s candidate, Michael Newland,2.9 percent of the total. In 2004, JulianLeppert fell just short with 4.7 percent. The main parties breathed a collective

sigh of relief, but it was inevitable thatthe failure by both Labour and the Con-servatives to tackle immigration and lawenforcement would increase support for the BNP.

By 2008, Ken Livingstone had beenmayor for eight years. He presided over

into the capital, both legal and illegal, happy in the knowledge that they usu-ally vote Labour. He continued to pour taxpayer money into minority projectswhile branding any attempt to promoteBritish culture as “racist.”  Indeed, therace industry was probably the onlyadministration.

His hopes for a third term suffereda setback in February 2008, when LeeJasper, the mayor’s black advisor for “police and equalities,” resigned amid

with various black organizations towhich he had been funneling publicmoney. This did not stop Mr. Living-stone from continuing to court the ethnicvote, with campaigns such as OperationBlack Vote, which used city money toincrease black voter turnout.

Mr. Livingstone was wounded, how-ever, and vulnerable to a challenge. Thegenerally moribund Conservative Partyran Boris Johnson, a light-weight whom

the media dubbed “Boris the Buffoon” because of his penchant for appearing onTV game shows. His greatest asset wasthat he was not Ken Livingstone.

The BNP had a real chance of win-ning an assembly seat. It had an at-tractive candidate in Mr. Barnbrook, who had already served on the Barking

and Dagenham Coun-cil in East London. In2006 his BNP teamwon an unprecedented12 council seats and  became the number-two party, or officialopposition.

Mr. Barnbrook hadalso gained public at-tention in connectionwith the “BNP balle-rina,” Simone Clarke. In January 2007, Miss

Clarke, a principaldancer with the Eng-lish National Balletwas “exposed” as aBNP member. A crowd

of lefties demonstrated at one of her  performances, and Mr. Barnbrook mether backstage with a bouquet of rosesand lilies. Later they started dating, andin December 2007 the press discoveredthey had become engaged.

This kind of attention certainly did nothurt, but a run for the London Assemblyis a serious campaign. The BNP handed

door. A dedicated team of volunteers, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, came from all corners of the country inresponse to Mr. Barnbrook’s call. The of burqa-clad women with the caption,“The Changing Face of London—IsThis What You Really Want?”

The media usually shun the BNP, butthe BBC seemed to recognize there wasconsiderable popular support for a party

for city council seats around the coun-try. It decided to accept a four-minute political broadcast, which can be seenon YouTube at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fPqdFqEXD3w&feature=email_. BNP broadcasts usually air at dead of night, but this one went out during primeviewing hours at 6:30 p.m. Because the party does not have a large PR budget, it produced the broadcast itself, but it waswell received and attracted attention ata critical time.

All the main parties, theunions, community leaders, clapped-outcelebrities, and even some church lead-ers, including the Bishop of Durham, tried to persuade people not to vote for the BNP. The press was negative, oftenhysterically so. The   Daily Mirror , for example, ran a supplement of no fewer than eight pages that included “10 rea-was that “the BNP doesn’t even supportthe England football team because it has black players.” Other reasons were thatthe party “is linked to hardline Nazis andracists across Europe and North Ameri-ca,” and that “many of their candidatesare convicted thugs and fraudsters.” The

Daily Mail quoted Martin Luther King’svision of a “world of equality for all,”and invited readers to join its campaignfor “hope not hate.” All this may have

helped the party, since Londoners do notlike to be told how to vote. The city went to the polls on May 1.

On the evening of May 2, BNP membersarrived at City Hall for the results, andwere greeted by a mob of “anti-fascists.”The count was some six hours late be-cause of tabulation problems, but shortlyafter midnight it was announced thatBoris Johnson had been elected mayor.

Each of the candidates gave a shortspeech. When it was Mr. Barnbrook’sturn, 90 percent of the audience walkedout of the chamber and the other candi-

dates ostentatiously ignored him. Mr.Barnbrook remained composed, and  promised to have the last laugh. Hehad not been elected mayor, but said hetallied he would be on the London As-were announced the BNP had won a seatgasp went up from the chamber followed by much elation among BNP supporters.worthwhile!

The BNP total was at the low end of

estimates—some polls had predictedas much as 14 percent of the vote—   probably because conservatives whomight have voted for the BNP wereso desperate to see the back of “Red”Ken that they rallied en masse to BorisJohnson.

Even the supposedly conservative -cess. The Daily Telegraph predicted thatMr. Barnbrook would become a “pariah” because all the other assembly members

Mr. Barnbrook (right) speaks on electionnight.

These days, when he arrives at CityHall to go to work, Mr. Barnbrook isstill greeted by “anti-fascist” protesters, but their numbers are rapidly dwindling.

Despite efforts to exclude him, he has been elected to committees and boardsthat deal with the budget, health andenvironment, and internal audit. Hereports that despite attempts to freezehim out, more than half of the assemblystaff is now communicating with himnormally, and he has vowed to makeBoard if anyone tries to keep him fromdoing his work. He has assumed his du-ties as a duly elected representative of the people, and over time the assembly

will have to accept him.The way has now been cleared for

further breakthroughs for the party, in particular in the European elections nextyear. The British may be slow to wakefrom their multicultural slumber, but asthe BNP website explains, “The quietrevolution is getting louder.”

Ditching the SAT

Despite what college admissions -

sessment Test (SAT) is basically an IQtest, and blacks and Hispanics do notdo as well on it as whites and Asians.Repeated revisions and re-scorings havenot changed this fact. Since today’s col-leges are more interested in “diversity”than in scholastic aptitude, and the SATstands in the way, many schools nolonger require it. In May, Smith Col-lege in Massachusetts and Wake Forest

University in North Carolina became thelatest to make the SAT optional.

At Wake Forest, admissions direc-tor Martha Allman says ditching theSAT is part of the schools’ effort toincrease “socioeconomic, racial, andethnic diversity in the student body.”She also claims research has shown that

SAT performance is linked to familyincome, and that the test does not predictsuccess in college. In fact, SAT scoresare excellent predictors of success in

college, and they are “linked” to familyincome because income is generallyrelated to IQ.

Educational consultant Jack McGuirewants even more colleges to make theSAT optional. “I do think it improvesa school’s image,” he said. “It showswhat’s important to schools, if they’rereally interested in increasing diversity.”[Elizabeth Landau, More CollegesMove Toward Optional SATs, CNN,May 30, 2008.]

and infecting government policy. The UN has no authority over USaffairs, but that hasn’t stopped it fromand South Asians, and for mistreatingimmigrants and foreigners. It also wantsthe US to abolish the death penalty, claiming non-whites get it more oftenthan they should.-

Tutu Speaks

South African Archbishop DesmondTutu thinks white Americans werewrong to get “very, very upset” over Barack Obama’s pastor, JeremiahWright. He says that Rev. Wright “may

have said more crudely what, actually, almost every African-American wouldhave wanted to say. I mean that is howthey feel in your country, that race . . .is a very, very real issue. And I think onthe whole you keep trying to pretendthat it isn’t.”

Mr. Tutu also faults the US for of-fering blacks the “illusion of equality:”“You say to them, ‘You’re equal, and thesky’s the limit.’ And they keep bump-ing their heads against this thing that’s

Wake Forest chapel.

Big Brother

Massachusetts is one of the mostliberal states in the country and has a black governor, Deval Patrick, but thestate still suffers from a “hostile racialclimate,” which is a holdover from the

busing debacles of the 1970s. That’saccording to a new group called theCommonwealth Compact, which wantsto make the Bay State’s workforce more“diverse.” Noting with horror that 94  percent of the board members of thestate’s largest corporations are white and87 percent are men, the CommonwealthCompact wants to shame companies intohiring more non-whites and women.

The plan is to launch a major PR cam- paign to get companies to sign up for aninquisition—76, including Wal-Mart,have already done so—under which they

tell Commonwealth Compact all abouttheir employees, senior management, and who applies for jobs. They willalso pledge to hire more non-whites andwomen. The Commonwealth Compactsays it will report the data only by in-dustry, not by company, so as to avoid

Marc Bendick, a Washington-baseddiversity consultant, thinks it should ratcompanies out right away. “Discrimina-tion reported that way [by industry] isa villainy without a villain,” he says.“Until you put pressure on companies

through shame or possible litigation tochange their behavior, you’re not reallygoing to accomplish anything that’sdifferent from what’s long prevailedunder EEOC reporting requirements.”Promises aren’t good enough, he adds.“Companies that make those pledgestend to have a slightly higher representa-tion of underrepresented groups, but it isvery marginal. This is not a very effec-tive way to move employment practicesforward.” [John C. Drake, Push is Set

for Workplace Diversity, Boston Globe,May 19, 2008.]

Charities could get the same pressure. The California lower house recently passed a bill that would make charities

report the composition by race anderotic orientation of their own boardsand staffs, the boards and staffs of thecharities they support, and explain howmuch money they give to non-whitecauses. Supporters of the bill claim theyare just asking for information, but thegoal, obviously, is to force charitiesto hire non-whites and fund pressuregroups. Critics say the California bill is

covering all foundations nationwide arealready being readied. The bill was to goto the California senate in June. [Heather R. Higgins, The ‘Diversity’ Threat toCalifornia Charities, Wall Street Journal,May 30, 2008.]

Italy Moves Right

In April, Italian voters returned con-servative billionaire businessman SilvioBerlusconi to power with a center-rightgovernment pledged to tackle the prob-lem of illegal immigration. His coalition  partners include both the nationalist Northern League (Lega Nord) and the National Alliance. (Gianni Alemanno, the Alliance’s candidate for mayor of 20,000 illegals.) The Berlusconi gov-ernment was quick to keep its word. InMay, it passed laws making it easier toexpel illegals and making illegal entry punishable by up to four years in prison.Illegals intercepted on the way to Italy

can now be held in detention for up to 18months. The government also promisesto crack down on Gypsies, who commita disproportionate share of crime. Theusual people are complaining that Italyis experiencing a “racism wave,” thatPrime Minister Berlusconi is creatinga “climate of discrimination,” and thatthe government is “legitimizing racistlanguage.” [Italy Condemned for ‘Rac-ism Wave,’ BBC, May 28, 2008.]

Saving the Tribe

The Kalinagos of Dominica are thelast remaining pre-Colombian Indiantribe in the eastern Caribbean. Of the4,000 who live on the tribe’s 3,800-acrereservation, only 1,000 are full-bloodedKalinagos. The rest are mixed, usuallywith a Kalinago father and a non-Kalina-go mother. Kalinago women who marryoutsiders usually leave the reservation. As a measure to save the tribe, Chief Charles Williams wants the Dominicangovernment to pass a law requiring

Kalinagos to marry other Kalinagos. Healso wants non-Kalinagos barred fromliving on the reservation. Dominicanlegislators have so far refused. Such a

law would “legislate who a person canmarry, and this cannot be so,” says Sen.Claduous Stanford. [Intermarriage Bansto Save Tribe Met with Opposition, Ft.Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, May 12, 2008, p. 23A.]

Watson Grovels OnLast fall, DNA co-discoverer James

Watson got into trouble when he told aBritish newspaper that he was “inher-ently gloomy about the prospect of Af-rica” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence isthe same as ours—whereas all the test-ing says not really.” People who knownothing about race and IQ denouncedDr. Watson. Speeches and a book tour were cancelled and the science labora-tory James Watson made famous forced

him out. He did himself no credit (andno good) by issuing an apology in whichracial differences in IQ.

Dr. Watson continues to go astray. Inearly June, he gave an interview to The

Root , an online black culture magazineowned by the Washington Post .  Root  editor (and Harvard University profes-sor) Henry Louis Gates, Jr. asked Dr.Watson if he was still gloomy aboutAfrica’s future. His reply: “Not if weeducate them. I think we’ve got to focuson education.” He also says he doesn’t

believe there is a link between race andIQ: “You can’t tell me that Ethiopiansare stupid. Jesus. So they test very lowon IQ, but I know enough of them— they’re bright.” [Henry Louis Gates, Jr.,Color, Controversy and DNA, TheRoot.com, June 2, 2008.]

Allah Behind Bars

Muslims make up just 12 percent of the French population, but between 60

and 70 percent of all prison inmates. InBritain, they make up three percent of the population and 11 percent of prison population in Holland, but 20 percentof adult prisoners and 26 percent of all juveniles in lock up. Belgium is just two percent Muslim, but Muslims are 16 percent of the prison population.

Why are so many Muslims in prison?Sebastian Roche, research director for Research, blames it on “discrimina-tion.” He says French society isolatesMuslims in ghettos, robbing them of hope for “social advancement.” JeanneSautière, director of integration andreligious groups for the French prisonsystem, has a slightly better explanation:“Many immigrants arrive in France indelinquency more frequent,” she says,

adding the obligatory disclaimer: “Themost important thing is to say there isno correlation between Islam and de-linquency.” [Molly Moore, In France,Prisons Filled with Muslims, Washing-ton Post, April 29, 2008.]
