2 A Cornerstone of the Community

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Nurses, physicians, dieticians, housekeepers and clinicians work

around-the-clock to ensure healthcare is here when you need it.

Whether it’s a broken arm in the emergency room on Sunday

afternoon or a heart attack at 2 a.m. on the Fourth of July,

Chambersburg Hospital, Waynesboro Hospital and Summit Health’s

other affiliates stand ready to care for you.

We are proud to offer high quality medical care right here at home. Imagine living in Franklin County without a community hospital

nearby. When every minute is precious to you or your loved one,

reaching the nearest emergency room quickly could mean the difference

between life and death.

I think of a patient who was experiencing a major heart attack in

Waynesboro. The Waynesboro Hospital team assessed him, and

then raced him by ambulance to the cardiac catheterization lab at

Chambersburg Hospital. Our top-rated cardiology services saved his

life. Together, your local hospitals were able to correctly diagnose and

coordinate the desperately needed care.

As nonprofit entities, Chambersburg Hospital, Waynesboro Hospital

and other Summit Health affiliates are here to serve community

members across the greater Franklin County region. Our volunteer

hospital board members share their time, talents and energy without

compensation. There are no shareholders to receive dividends or

gain from the rising value of stock. There are no private owners who

benefit from “profits.”

Because Summit Health and its affiliates are charitable organizations,

any unspent funds at the end of the fiscal year are reinvested to keep

superior healthcare available in Franklin County.

A Message From The

President

Norman B. Epstein,

President and CEO

“Despite the many

challenges in

healthcare today,

Summit Health

reinvests to keep

the system strong,

viable, and ready to

meet your and your

family’s needs each

and every day.”

Chambersburg Hospital

2008 Annual Report

Healthcare capabilities regularly improve with cutting edge

technologies to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions. The

newest medical innovations are incredibly expensive, yet they can

save more lives.

Waynesboro Hospital and Chambersburg Hospital invested more

than $2 million in imaging technology that will give doctors the

ability to better diagnose and treat our patients. The 64-slice

CT scanner gives clinicians a 3-D view of the body and organs,

which they can turn to view from any angle. Images can be shared

simultaneously for consultation with other physicians involved in a

patient’s care.

Summit Health spent $1.5 million this year to acquire and

implement digital mammography across its affiliates. There is no

doubt this technology makes it easier for clinicians to find breast

cancers earlier. Think about the women in your life who might one

day be saved by early detection.

Hospital facilities require regular maintenance, occasional

renovation and even expansions to meet the needs of today’s

patients and technologies.

During the past five years we updated the Chambersburg Hospital

emergency department to meet the needs of a growing community.

A new medical building on Norland Avenue now houses the John

L. and Cora I. Grove Cancer Center, a dedicated facility for cancer

treatment. This year, we built new staff and visitor parking lots to

prepare for upcoming state-of-the-art patient care facility expansions

at both Chambersburg Hospital and Waynesboro Hospital. These

facility upgrades keep us prepared to serve our communities for

decades to come.

4 A Cornerstone of the Community

Attracting and retaining highly trained physicians to smaller rural communities remain top priorities – at a very high expense.

This fiscal year, Summit Health invested more than $10.3 million to recruit and retain the very best medical professionals. Examples include a board-certified vascular surgeon, medical oncologist, urologist, psychiatrist, and a fellowship-trained breast surgeon.

The national nursing shortage is a pressing issue faced by all hospitals, with no easy solution.

This past year we invested in our nursing staff ’s continued education by providing more than $2.7 million in scholarships and educational programs. As full-time employees, new nursing graduates now complete an 18-month nurse residency program, developed by Summit Health. While they directly care for patients, new nurses also address nursing and patient care issues in a classroom setting, as well as simulated patient rooms, with an experienced and highly-skilled nursing staff. This has resulted in improved nursing skills and higher job satisfaction and retention.

More patients without insurance are treated each year. Plus, financial reimbursement for services provided to patients at both Chambersburg Hospital and Waynesboro Hospital continues to decline.

This past year, unreimbursed and charity care rose to more than $21.2 million. These patients are your neighbors, friends and family. Charity care is a core component of our mission, “to improve the health and well being of the people living in communities we serve in Franklin County and surrounding areas.”

Despite the many challenges in healthcare today, Summit Health reinvests to keep the system strong, viable, and ready to meet your and your family’s needs each and every day.

Many communities across the nation have lost their local hospitals. With outstanding leadership and an eye toward the future, Summit Health will be here caring for the residents of greater Franklin County for decades to come – right here at home.

Proud to serve you,Norman B. Epstein, President and CEO
