    MessagefroMthe chair,

Its hard to believe that two years have passed since I became Chair. Looking

back, so much has been done but so much still needs to be accomplished. The

one constant has been your support and generosity. Without such, the Tri-Valley

Conservancy would not have been able to do hal the things weve achieved. So,

    thank you very much.

During 2008 the Conservancy has: Completed the Draft North Livermore Resource Conservation Study

Continued to ensure that more than 4,100 acres remain under agricultural

conservation easement, including 1,900 acres that support the Livermore

    Valley Trail System

Continued Quest for Excellence Winegrowing and Winemaker program in

    support o local viticulture

Applied for Land Trust Alliance Accreditation This national accreditation

indicates that TVC is operating in an ethical, legal and technically sound manner.

As my term as Chair o TVC draws to a close, I would like to reiterate that our

work at TVC is never-ending and that our goal or adding miles o public trails,

protecting hundreds o acres o wildlie habitat, preserving agriculture and

conserving scenic areas or everyone to enjoy, remains at the oreront. Ater all,

what we do today in the way o preserving land will be the hallmark or uture

generations. It will also serve as our legacy or our children and grandchildren.

Land conserVation coMMitteeLast year the committee recommended to the ull board that TVC commission a

Conservation Resource Study of the North Livermore Priority Landscape Area.

Using Conservancy-established guidelines, the study identied several key sites or

protection as well as discussion and ways to acquire conservation easements. That

study has already been through one public review process and will have another beore

    being completed in 2009.

Besides the study, the committee also recommended to the board the purchase of 74

acres o property that will link Del Valle State Park to Sycamore Grove Park, allowing

or a trail that will eventually link Ohlone Wilderness in Sunol to Shadow Clis in

Pleasanton to the Bay Ridge Trial.

The property owners and TVC came to an agreement on the purchase price, with a

closing date o no later than December 2008. The East Bay Regional Park District, with

a proviso that it would receive a trail easement on the property, contributed $150,000.

The Livermore Area Recreation and Parks District (LARPD) also is on board with

another $150,000. TVCs ultimate goal is to give the land to the LARPD for addition to

    Sycamore Grove Park.

Thank you to Jean King, Mary Roberts, Karl Wente, Bill Hoppes and Jon Harvey, who served

on this committee with me in 2008.

    John D. Rockefeller Jr.

resource deVeLopMent coMMitteeIn 2008, our mission remained much the same as the previous year: the preservation o

areas outside the South Livermore Valley Area Plan (SLVAP). With most o our unding

restricted to the SLVAP, our continued goal has been to look orward and pursue unding

or conservation expansion into the Tri-Valley.

To that end, we implemented a three-year fundraising plan 2008 to 2010 which

included the ollowing concepts: a major donor board, board training, message and

branding enhancement, and a strengthening o our membership program.

The ruits o our labor are starting to show; our donor renewal has increased by 30

percent, from 55 percent in 2007 to 85 percent in 2008.

Part o the success can be attributed to our Jeans and Jewels undraiser; held at the CasaReal in Pleasanton, the fundraiser was attended by 198 TVC supporters. In fact, the net

    for the rst-time event was $25, 342.

Thank you to Kathy Farrell, Miriam Miller and Michael Princevalle who served on this committee

    with me in 2008.

    Talk about a night to

    remember! For a rst-time

    event, Jeans and Jewels, held

on October 2 at Casa Real

    in Pleasanton, was a rousing

    and delightul success.

This was the place to be toenjoy antastic ood paired

    with superb wine, and then

    embraced by wonderul

    socializing, a silent and live

    auction and o course, hot

    music to work your groove.

    We realize that this

    past years success could

    not have been achieved

    without the hard work and

    commitment o the 2008

    Jeans & Jewels Committee.

To each and every one o

finance coMMitteeEveryone knows that 2008 was a terrible year or most equity investors. The nancial/credit

crisis led to ull blown recession which in turn caused a downturn in consumer and business

spending. All this was refected in equity markets which ell o a cli over the latter hal o

the year. Any way you cut it and no matter where you invested around the world, 2008 was a

    disaster or long term investors

I regretfully report that the combined nancial statements for the year ending December 31,

2008 reect net assets totaled $11,942,128 which is a decrease of $2,426,657 (unrealized

investment loss) and $900,000 (option to purchase property) when compared to December 31,

2007. We look hopeully to the uture and trust the markets will turn around in the long term.

Thank you to Mark Eaton and Karl Wente who served on this committee in 2008.

Board goVernance coMMitteeThis committee met regularly during the past year to discuss the involvement o all directors in

the activities and goals or the Conservancy, to select new candidates or directorship and to make

recommendations or improving the Boards committee structure.

Current strategic, conservation and undraising plans were the topic o discussion during a

January 2008 retreat or the Board. What materialized rom that retreat was that the Tri-Valley

Conservancy needed to identiy key changes and organizational challenges in the near uture.

The Boards retreat and subsequent discussions highlighted the need or another board member

to be elected beore the end o the year. The Board Governance committee recommended Kathy

Farrell. Kathy agreed to join the TVCs Board as At-Large Director in June 2008. The Board will

be looking to ll two more seats during 2009.

Thank you to Jean King and Michael Princevalle who served on this committee with me in 2008.
