AT&T Foundation Provides $500,000 Grant for 20 new Teen Centers The AT&T Foundation donated $500,000 to the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, a gift that was used to open Teen Centers and add new programs at 20 additional library locations. The Dallas Public Library's three newest Teen Centers: Skillman Southwestern, Park Forest and North Oak Cliff, were largely sponsored by AT&T. The money will also create a Literary Camp and Teen Center Arts Incubator. Membership Growth Through the vigorous efforts of the Membership Committee, led by Frank Kryza and a host of other helpers, the Friends membership has grown over 30%. Membership now stands at 600. In addition to upgrading and expanding the list of benefits for members, a focused Young Professionals Group was established under the leadership of Valentina Collins. The goal is to accommodate new downtown residents and younger professionals working in the Dallas central business core with receptions and programs tailored to their interests. Allison McCul cheon. Library of Congress Visits Dallas The Library of Congress brought to life the unique historic and cultural treasures housed in the Library of Congress in a free program at the Dallas Public Library. Library of Congress educational specialists presented National Treasures, Local Treasures: The Library of Congress at Your Fingertips in two events. Congressmen Sam Johnson and Pete Sessions came to the library to welcome the Librarian of Congress. Dallas was one of only five cities in the country selected to host the interactive presentation highlighting Jack Cole Irom Ihe Cenler lor Book, Congressman the largest collection of the world's knowledge and America's creativity. It was an elegant evening with a silent suction, seated dinner and an entertaining program with local Dallas author Robert Edsel. His story is a fascinating tale of the plunder of the art and treasures of Europe in World War II and the recovery of thousands of pieces. The Monuments Men were dedicated to finding and returning the treasures. Their story had not been told before - and many never really shared their stories even during their lifetime. Performance Space Dedicated in the Memory of Shirley Pollock On October 24, the Dallas Public Library dedicated the Shirley Philipson Pollock Performing Space on the fourth floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Library to honor the memory of Shirley Pollock. She was a friend to many arts and civic organizations in her lifetime, but she especially loved the Dallas Public library, which was the beneficiary of her dedication, time and support. The naming of a Dallas Public Library area is designated for the recognition of persons who have contributed significantly to the development of the library services. The library staff wanted to do something special to honor her and chose to name the performing space in the her memory. Performance Space Dedicated in the Memory of Shirley Pollock

On October 24 the Dallas Public Library dedicated the Shirley Philipson Pollock Performing Space on the fourth floor of the J Erik Jonsson Library to honor the memory of Shirley Pollock She was a friend to many arts and civic organizations in her lifetime but she especially loved the Dallas Public library which was the beneficiary of her dedication time and support The naming of a Dallas Public Library area is designated for the recognition of persons who have contributed significantly to the development of the library services The library staff wanted to do something special to honor her and chose to name the performing space in the her memory City Manager Mary Suhm attended the dedication and presented a Proclamation to the Pollock family Board member Richard Pollock with wife

Robert Solender Award Announced

The Friends lost longtime board member and supporter Robert Solender in November Among his many contributions Robert was instrumental in securing funds for the second bookmobile dedicated in March 2008 At the annual luncheon it was announced that a Robert Solender Award will be given annually to a Friends member who has contributed significantly to the library

Marsha Fogarty Honored

Long time Friends member Marsha Fogarty was honored by the Mayor and Dallas City Council with a special recognition for her many achievements She served as President of the Friends for four years as well as serving as a Director for many years She also served on the Dallas Municipal Library Board for numerous years She and her husband moved to Colorado shortly after the presentation She is greatly missed

Bookmarks opened at NorthPark Center on June 13 2008 This is the only library for children located in a shopping mall in the United States It is a dream-come-true for Director of Libraries Laurie Evans who first conceived this unique concept The Mayor and six City Council Members attended along with Nancy Nasher and executives of Atmos Energy Library Board Members and Directors of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library The Mayor not only helped to cut the ribbon but he also stayed to read to the children The library scheduled a full day of activities and entertainment for the children

Bachman Lake Branch opened to great fanfare replaCing the Walnut Hill Branch Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the Lochwood Branch which will replace the Casa View Branch and also for the Pleasant Grove Branch A site celebration was held for White Rock Hills Branch since it will be a year before the groundbreaking can take place Oak Lawn Branch Library celebrated 80 years of service and Lakewood Branch celebrated their 70th anniversary

He is a graduate of the University of Texas where he earned a BA with special honors in Plan II and in Classics as the William J Battle Scholar in Classics He also has degrees from Gonville amp Caius College (Cambridge) where he spent a year studying Etruscan metalwork and fourth century Attic iconography and from Harvard Business School where he earned an MBA

Deborah Brown joined the Friends in March 2008 She coordinated substantial publicity to achieve higher civic profile for the Friends and over 25 separate articles have been published in local papers in the last year Electronic newsletters are now being sent monthly to keep members informed on a more timely basis Social networking media vehicles including both Facebook and Twitter have also been established

Deborah is a Dallas native and a graduate of SMU She worked in the telecom industry for over 20 years with stints at ATampT and British Telecom She has been a long time community volunteer and has served on the boards of many organizations including the MuniCipal Library Board Dallas Animal Shelter Commission

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League and Womens Council of the Dallas Arboretum Married to husband Nigel they are the guardians of 6 cats
