OHSU School of Dentistry

2008 - 2009

Capping the end of a successful year, the OHSU School of Dentistry recently hosted a one-of-a-kind evening for its Dean’s Gold Circle donors and friends at the newly opened Allison Inn & Spa in Newberg, Ore. The Dean’s Gold Circle was the first black tie event held at the Allison, which is receiving rave reviews for its “green” architecture, spectacular views, innovative chef, and extensive garden.

“The Allison is a unique and special place for the School of Dentistry,” said Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, on Oct. 17 to the assembled crowd of 220. “At last year’s Dean’s Gold Circle dinner, Mary (Clinton) and I shared a table with Ken and Joan Austin [founders and owners of A-dec, Inc., and The Allison] and they suggested we consider having our 2009 event here. What an incredible idea! We did not need a second invitation.

“Thank you for joining us to celebrate another year of success at the School,” said the Dean.

“Dentists are some of the best people in the whole world and our alumni and donors continue to be amongst the most loyal.”

There were more than 50 new members joining the DGC (Dean’s Gold Circle) – donors of $1,000 or more – in 2008-2009, said School Alumni Relations and Development Director Pat Regan. New DGC members attending the dinner included Donald Paluska, D.M.D. ’91, and wife, Lisa; Gregory Nemchick, D.M.D. ’74, and wife, Susan; Rosemary McPharlin, D.D.S., OHSU assistant professor of operative dentistry, and husband, Tim; David Longtin, D.M.D. ’65, assistant professor of restorative dentistry; John Kloucek, D.M.D. ’86, and wife, Julie; and Stanley Bohnstedt, D.M.D. ’85, and wife, Karen. There were 20 School faculty attending who give at the Dean’s Gold Circle level.

Dean’s Message

There is so much happening at the School of Dentistry! The momentum is really amazing.

In September 75 of the brightest and most energetic first-year dental students successfully finished their

initial courses. Everyone made it through gross anatomy and now they are immersed in the full fall term curriculum (see page 26 for a class of 2013 profile). Our 225 second- through fourth-year dental students returned to campus in late September for the start of fall term classes and they are fully engaged with classes, the pre-doctoral clinic, and volunteering in the community. In October, we hosted a marvelous Dean’s Gold Circle dinner (see page one), garnered pledges at our phonathon (see page 15), and got to know the first year dental students a little better at an Alumni Association sponsored chili dinner. And we completed a very successful accreditation review from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (see page 25).

We were very worried last year because of the economic swizzle. Salaries and hiring were frozen, travel was restricted, and we were asked by the university to cut $2 million from our annual budget, due to the state’s lessening support for OHSU. The overall budget for the dental school declined in 2008-09.

The good news is that the number of donors at the Dean’s Gold Circle (DGC) level – gifts of $1,000 or more – increased. We had 50 new gifts at that level! Many of you also elected to mark your gift specifically to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence, which is a fund we tapped innumerable times this year for dental student and faculty travel to national research meetings, seed money for promising dental research, funds for patient care-related dental student events, and scholarships for dental students. Having a fund outside of our annual budget that enables us to react spontaneously to good ideas for dental education is priceless.

The Dean’s Fund for Excellence also was the source for two incredible successes that could only have been accomplished outside our annual budget. First, we remodeled our patient reception center for the pre-doctoral clinic, which was a 1956-style waiting area in a dark and narrow corridor with entry next to the restrooms. The remodel enabled us to prepare for implementing a paperless records system, which will go live next July, and is getting big smiles from our patients and employees (see photo, this page). Second, we created an enhanced Pediatric Dental Surgery Clinic in Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to care for children who are acutely ill, immunocompromised or have special needs. The clinic is so busy that we’re having trouble settling upon a date when all of our staff and faculty will be available to attend an official dedication of the new space.

So, we are incredibly busy and productive, morale is high, and a couple parts of our School facilities received a small, but important, physical boost, thanks to you.

You have made a great investment in your school. We are prudent in how we use your gifts and we appreciate the faith you have bestowed upon us as we continue our mission of providing excellent dental education, patient care, and research.

Have a wonderful 2010!

CorrectionIn the fall 2009 Caementum, Frank Strange, Ph.D., wife of Evelyn Strange, D.M.D. ’50, was incorrectly identified as having a medical degree. In fact, Dr. Strange, who died recently, held a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and taught behavioral sciences at the dental and medical schools. We regret the error.

Message from the Association President

From educating and supporting dental students to raising money to connecting with alumni, the OHSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association has had another busy year.

It has been a lot of fun keeping up with School developments and creatively finding ways to forge long-term relationships with dental students and alumni. As president, I have tried to attend as many Alumni Association-sponsored events as I can to connect with our future alumni – the current 300 dental students – and some of our 5,700 doctor of dental medicine, registered dental hygienists, and specialty training graduates practicing all over the world.

I believe there is a School and/or Alumni Association activity out there for everyone. After dental school graduation, it’s easy to get caught up with our dental practices and patients, our families and their activities, and the day-to-day minutiae of life.

It took me a few years after dental school graduation to make myself available for giving back to our School. I have never regretted my decision to get involved with the School of Dentistry. Take it from me, it’s never too late to get involved.

There is an Alumni Association activity just about every month in which alumni participation is needed. We make phone calls in April to welcome new dental students to OHSU, there is a white coat ceremony for second-year dental students in July, fourth-year dental students are honored at a “Welcome to the Alumni Association” reception in June, and the board personally greets first-year dental students at a chili dinner in October. There are reunions and awards at the Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon in April, golf and continuing education in September, and a leadership and professionalism lecture in February/March. And my favorite dental school event:

Graduation in May! There’s nothing like reliving your own dental school graduation by watching the newest dental graduates happily receiving their lilac hoods. It’s a great way to feel pride in your School and remember how and why you became a dental professional.

You can always find out what’s happening at www.ohsu.edu/sod/alumni.

Beyond events, we have alumni that volunteer in the School and Alumni office, and alumni who help teach dental students in the pre-doctoral clinic, in the community, and through the continuing education office. And we have alumni that give money and help raise funds at our October phonathon.

We sincerely thank those of you who have given of your time, money and expertise to the School and Alumni Association this year. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2010!

New Dental Donation to OHSU Library

The OHSU Library recently received the papers of Wilbur Nelson Van Zile, D.D.S., emeritus professor of oral surgery, who died in February.

“This is the most remarkable collection I’ve seen in my time at OHSU,” said Sara Piasecki, head of Historical Collections and Archives. The collection includes Dr. Van Zile’s certificates and awards, manuscripts, research, teaching slides, and dental equipment and supplies, as well as correspondence and photographs relating to his U.S. Navy service, along with buttons, dog tags, and other uniform regalia, personal correspondence between Dr. Van Zile and his wife during World War II, and family photographs, including two tintypes of people who may be Dr. Van Zile’s parents.

Prior to his death, Dr. Van Zile also arranged for an estate donation for a dental student scholarship. For more information on Dr. Van Zile, go to http://ohsu-hca.blogspot.com.

The OHSU Library is currently accepting donations of dental memorabilia.

Special guests included Oregon Dental Association (ODA) President Rick Asai, D.M.D. ’81, and wife, Betsy; ODA Speaker of the House Jill Price, D.M.D. ’92; A-dec President Scott Parrish, and wife, Loni Austin Parrish; Jonathan Nicholas, ODS Companies vice president of branding and corporate communications, and wife, Vivian McInerny; and ODS Board Member Karen Anderegg and husband, Bill Rutherford.

Steve (D.M.D. ’75) and Fay Sakata traveled the farthest distance for the dinner, from Hilo, Hawaii, and Tom (D.M.D. ’78) and Christine Tucker drove from Klamath Falls, Ore.

The Allison’s Chef, Nathan Lockwood introduced the specially-prepared menu of house-cured salt cod branade on a warm crostini over a black kale salad, duo of braised beef shortribs and filet mignon with Yukon Gold potato cake and braised root vegetables, and chocolate mousse cake.

Music was provided by the Class IV’s, which include professor emeritus and associate dean emeritus Joe Consani and Jim Bennett, D.M.D. ’58, oral pathology professor emeritus.

The Austins, who were named honorary alumni of OHSU School of Dentistry in 2000, were the featured guest speakers.

“If it wasn’t for dentistry, there wouldn’t be an Allison,” said Ken.

Ken said in 1964 the Austin family dentist (Roy Yamada, D.M.D. ’54, now deceased, whose son, Russell, D.M.D. ’97, was at the dinner) loaned them $1,000 for six months to start A-dec (Austin Dental Equipment Company), now one of the largest dental equipment manufacturers in the world.

“We got our first $1,000 in October and our second $1,000 in November,” Ken recalled. “Then we had our first sale for 20,000 disposable evacuation tips totaling $800 and we were off. That was the money that primed the money for The Allison.”

Said Joan, “This place came from a dream 25 years ago.” Initially, she said, the idea was to create a small country inn for families to stay while their loved ones went through treatment

at the nearby Hazelden Springbrook facility. But when another hotel opened in Newberg, the plan was shelved.

“It wasn’t until land values skyrocketed and the wine country took off that we went back to the drawing board,” she said.

The Allison has 85 rooms, 12 meeting rooms, a spa, the Jory restaurant, walking trails, and more than 75,000 plants, including olive trees and five acres of pinot noir grapes. A vacant brick building nearby will become a village of boutique shops.

Daughter, Loni, spearheaded the art collection within the Allison. Son, G. Kenneth Austin III, made tables and a cheese cart with “all the bells and whistles” for Chef Lockwood.

“This is Joan’s gift to the state of Oregon,” said Ken. “It is a great legacy for Newberg, Yamhill County, wine country, and our state.”

To thank the Austins for their hospitality, Dean Clinton presented them with a large wood and metal sculpture the School commissioned with Loni’s input.

“I knew the importance and value of the A-dec relationship to OHSU,” said Loni. “It is very important to both sides and I wanted an impressive piece to portray the strength of the relationship.”

The sculpture, by Oregon artist Marilyn Higginson, will be on permanent display at The Allison.

“This gift culminates more than 40 years of A-dec and School collaborations,” said Dean Clinton. “We are so fortunate as dentists and the School to have been joined into the large family that seems to fall out of Ken and Joan’s existence. What a special evening. This has been a lot of fun.

“We think this is a great venue. And we will be here next year for our Dean’s Gold Circle.”

The Dean’s Gold Circle is scheduled for October 16 in 2010.

The last weekend in September, known as Back-to-School Weekend at the OHSU School of Dentistry, was filled with fun and educational Alumni Association-sponsored events. Back-to-School Weekend was the brainchild of Alumni Association veteran John Peterson, D.M.D. ’55, with several events named for premier clinician and educator Kenneth Cantwell, D.M.D. ’43, and one for former Dental Hygiene Department Chair Margaret M. Ryan.

Cantwell Memorial Golf tournamentOn Sept. 25, 120 alumni, dental students, and friends participated in the Cantwell Memorial Golf Tournament at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora. Though cloudy in the morning, by mid-afternoon the skies were sun-filled.

The team of Scott Nicholson, D.M.D. ’83, Ernie Thompson, D.M.D. ’83, Brian Seaholm, D.M.D. ’83, and Immediate Past Alumni Association President James Alder, D.M.D. ’82, had the low score of 64 to tie with the team of Ziad Kaady, D.M.D. ’03, Stuart Parks, D.M.D. ’02, Matt Hill, D.M.D. ’05, and Ben Grieb, D.M.D. ’03. There was a putting contest between the two teams to determine the tournament winner and the Nicholson/Thompson/Seaholm/Alder team was victorious.

The first place team received a $100 pro shop credit plus Nike shirts, McGregor hats, and golf balls from Dentsply. The second place team received a $50 pro shop credit, an umbrella, a mug, a towel, and Dentsply golf balls.

Dr. Grieb won the Consani Contest, hitting the ball closest to the hole. He won $1,000 for his efforts.

Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, played with OHSU president Joe Robertson, Jay Lamb, D.M.D. ’80, and OHSU Executive Vice President Steve Stadum. Eighteen dental students participated, as well.

Cantwell Memorial Lecture/Margaret M. Ryan Dental hygiene updateOn Sept. 26, nearly 100 people attended the Cantwell Memorial Lecture/Margaret M. Ryan Dental Hygiene Update in the OHSU Auditorium (Old Library). Ben Bernstein, Ph.D., OHSU affiliate assistant professor of community dentistry, spoke about “Turning Stress into Success in Your Dental Practice.” Dr. Bernstein noted that an optimal level of stress stimulates optimal performance and listed ways attendees could reduce stress and improve their performance by connecting their mind, spirit, and body.

“It was well worth doing,” said Joseph Schwartz, D.D.S., associate professor of periodontology, who frequently attends the Cantwell Memorial Lecture.

“It was a great presentation with a lot of information that you could take back to the faculty, or even to your wife. Sometimes people put themselves down and in this recession, you have to find ways to bring yourself up, and that’s what he did.”

Prior to the lecture, the historical dental collections and archives were open, with yearbooks and catalogs for alums to peruse. Alums were asked to identify dental students, staff, and faculty in old photographs. Rich Knight, D.M.D. ’79, for example, recognized Jim Rademacher, D.M.D. ’70, in a photo and was able to make a copy of the print for Dr. Rademacher’s family.

Fred Scott, D.M.D. ’63, has been making calls for the School of Dentistry’s annual phonathon for as long as he can remember.

“We used to have a contest to see which class could raise the most money,” said Dr. Scott, with a chuckle. “One year, some of us gave in our classmates’ names so we could get 100 percent participation. Then, other classes started to make gifts in larger amounts!”

Dr. Scott volunteered each night of the eight nights of calling during the October Alumni Association phonathon on behalf of the School of Dentistry and even received a gift during his calls from brother, Delbert, a medical doctor. Fred Kreutzer, D.M.D. ’64 volunteered at the phonathon for six nights, conducting research, and Lillian Harewood, D.M.D. ’95, Alumni Association vice president, made calls for five nights. Two third-year dental students – Joe Jarman and Kelly Andrews – volunteered every night of the phonathon.

About 55 alumni, dental students, staff and faculty raised $135,260 for the School, much of it designated for the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

The Dean’s Fund for Excellence is used to support such off-budget requests as dental student and faculty travel, scholarships, student events, start-up research, and this summer, the remodel of the School’s patient reception center and creation of a Pediatric Dentistry Surgery Clinic.

“We have tapped into the Dean’s Fund for Excellence many times this year to support School endeavors during a tight budget year,” said Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64.

“I’m not sure how much longer we’ll need to tap into the Dean’s Fund for Excellence, but we very much appreciate the financial flexibility the fund has given us. Ideally, we would like to grow this fund again for when we need it most.”

The phonathon “is for a good cause,” said Ken McInnis, D.M.D. ’85, who is in private practice in Hillsboro, Ore.,

and was calling for his third year. “I enjoy talking to people in my class. It’s my duty to be here.”

Alumni Association Board Member Glen Shimshak, D.M.D. ’74, agreed. “This is the only time of year I talk to 90 percent of my classmates,” he said. “We use the time to catch up on our lives and families while giving back and doing something good. This is my way of repaying the dental school.”

Traditionally, the annual phonathon is held in the OHSU Foundation’s board room, but this year, the Foundation’s new call center also was available for making calls. The call center has a computer and phone at every station and is designed to minimize the use of paper.

The Class of 1981 donated the most during the phonathon, $8,800 from 13 gifts. The top caller from that class was E. David Granum, D.M.D. ’81, who raised $5,300 on the first night. There was a tie for most donations with the classes of 1964 and 1965 each bringing in 17 gifts. Volunteer callers from those classes were: Fred Bremner, D.M.D. ’64, Don Sirianni, D.M.D. ’64, and Chuck Padbury, D.M.D. ’65. Student Kelly Andrews had the record for the longest call during the phonathon, talking with one alumn on Oct. 29 for more than 30 minutes.

Dr. Scott and wife, Punky, who is an honorary alumni, once again donated all of the food during the phonathon, from The Bomber Restaurant & Catering Co. “The Alumni Association would like to give a huge thank you to Punky and The Bomber,” said Pat Regan, director of alumni relations and development.

“Dental school was the highlight of my life,” said Dr. Granum, who said he attended OHSU at age 30, and is the regional dentistry manager for Willamette Dental. “I identified with the people in my class and where they came from. It is important to me to be involved in the school.

“I want other people coming up in the profession to have the same good feeling about dentistry and the School that I do.”

Alumni Adventures

Web Site Migration CompleteThe School of Dentistry’s Dental Informatics team – Devin Bryant, Dave Feucht, and Kim Howard – recently completed a six-month migration of the School’s Web site to the OHSU unified site structure, which means easier navigation for patients, alumni and friends.

“The goal was to give all of the sites on the OHSU Web site a common look and feel,” said Dave, computer support analyst.

“Now the School web site should look and operate similarly to the rest of the university, and provide information in a more consistent and logical way.” For the migration, the Dental Informatics team worked with School deans and department heads to update and rearrange content on their pages, eliminate old content, add photographs, and improve layout. A School calendar is in the works and, thanks to the migration, Dave and Devin said they are better able to make use of the tools the Information Technology Group offers through the university. Each department is able to update its own Web site. For example, the migration enabled the School’s Alumni Association to update its site with new interactive features. Alumni and friends can now make a gift online, register for events, update their contact information, and view current career opportunities that have been received at the school. The School’s quarterly newsletter for alumni, donors, and friends, Caementum, and its monthly internal publication for dental students, staff, and faculty, Dental Bites, are available online.

“We also have a new online photo album of dental students and alums at various Alumni Association events,” said Development Assistant Mallory Gordon. “Photos from the album can be downloaded and printed. Alumni who have taken the time to check out the updated Web site seem to be impressed!”

The patient care section of the School’s Web site was redone and first steps were taken toward integrating it with the university’s health care web site, ohsuhealth.com.

“We hope to have it completely integrated by the end of the year,” said Devin, systems applications analyst. “The integration will enable people who go to ohsuhealth.com to search for a dentist or clinic, and find information on services they need.”

Alumni Association In Hawaii

Bringing a little rain from Portland, the School of Dentistry hosted an alumni reception in Honolulu, Hawaii, during the American Dental Association annual session in October.

“It was a wonderful time,” said Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64. “The food was incredible and, despite the light showers, we had an outdoor patio with a terrific view of the Pacific Ocean.”

More than 100 alumni and friends attended the Oct. 3 reception, including 15 alums from Hawaii, including Robert Azama, D.M.D. ’78, Kyle Chock, D.M.D. ’80, James Choy, D.M.D. ’97, Frederick Curtice, D.M.D., Owen Kawakami, D.M.D. ’68, and Laura Mallery-Sayre, D.M.D. ’69. Oregon Dental Association President Rick Asai, D.M.D. ’81, attended with wife, Betsy, and ODA Speaker of the House, Jill Price, D.M.D. ’92, was also there.

Dean Clinton talked about the recent School remodeling projects that were funded by gifts to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence, and he updated alumni on the group practices. The Dean noted that three of the 75 dental students from the Class of 2013 are from Hawaii, Jeff Casebier, Aaron Omura, and Seth Huish, bringing the total number of Hawaiian dental students to six.

“We have a lot to be proud of at the School and I wanted to thank this group for their support,” said the Dean.

Editor’s note: Don J. Jeannet, D.M.D. ’50, was interviewed for Caementum in early August, about six weeks prior to his Sept. 26 death (see page 22). His posthumous feature is published with permission from wife, Anna Jeannet.

Don Jeannet, D.M.D. ’50: I dream of dentistry

Despite growing up in a dentistry family, it was never a given that Don Jeannet, D.M.D. ’50 would follow father, Emil’s (D.M.D. ’19) footsteps.

“My mother had been pushing for me to be a dentist,” acknowledges Dr. Jeannet, 82. “But I just wanted to learn things, not because I wanted to get into dentistry but for the fact of learning.

“I was actually looking for something else to do when I got out of the service, but dentistry seemed as good as anything else I might do,” he said. “It turned out to be the best experience I ever had in my life.

“I dream of dentistry,” said Dr. Jeannet. “To me, dentistry was a lot of fun because you learn new things all the time.”

Dental technician in u.S. ArmyBorn and raised in Portland, Ore., Dr. Jeannet attended Grant High School and went on to the University of Portland, where he amassed a year’s worth of credits, and then to Oregon State University for a year.

“I overdid myself in academics,” said Dr. Jeannet, with a chuckle. “I had way more credits than I needed.

He entered the U.S. Army and went into medics basic training for dental technician school. “I used all of the equipment that I would eventually need to become a first-year dental student,” said Dr. Jeannet.

While Dr. Jeannet was in the service, his mother, Gladys, arranged for him to attend dental school. “I got home on a Saturday and started dental school on Monday,” he said.

“Everyone in my dental class had been in the service, except Evelyn (Strange, D.M.D. ’50). The average age of the class was 37 and I was 19.

“Why they took me, I had no idea,” he said. “It was ridiculous!”

After his year in dental technician school, Dr. Jeannet said he found dental school easy.

“The first year was a cinch,” he said. “The first class was dental anatomy, a course I had taught at technician school. I was not only able to do my own work, but I was able to help some of my classmates with their work, too.

“It was a pleasure to be with those guys,” he said. “We had a marvelous class. No one ever talked about what they did in the service, but five of us had landed [in Normandy] during D-Day and one was a pilot heading to Japan for bombing when he learned that the war was over and that he should turn around.

“They were all good quality people,” remembers Dr. Jeannet, who often coordinated his class reunions and liked to keep tabs on his classmates, donating regularly to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence. “Many of my classmates have died of cancer or had Alzheimer’s. Now there are only 13 of us left.”

Dr. Jeannet gets quiet.

“It is such a shame to see them go because they were such outstanding people.”

the “worst” StudentAs dental school went on, Dr. Jeannet said it got tougher. “I needed to learn how to deal with patients and their problems,” he said. “I always considered myself to be the worst student in my class.”

Though that sentiment is doubtful, it does illustrate the mental grit needed to complete four years of dental school. Dr. Jeannet said he often thinks about establishing a student scholarship for the “worst” dental student, simply to give OHSU students who feel like they are struggling some needed encouragement.

Dr. Jeannet’s father practiced in Portland, for many years at the Russell Street Clinic, but Dr. Jeannet wanted to stand on his own after graduation.

“My dad was a really fine dentist as I look back on it,” he said. “But I didn’t want to work there when I got out of school. He was a skilled craftsman, but his equipment and techniques were old.”

Dr. Jeannet opened an office in northeast Portland at Union and Killingsworth. John Dixon, D.M.D. ’50, ran a neighboring pediatric dentistry practice.

In 1959, Dr. Jeannet, wife, Ann (an R.N.) and their four children headed north to the San Juan Islands, which were without a dentist.

“It was entirely different then than it is now,” said Dr. Jeannet. “There were 5,500 people on 174 islands and you got here by ferry – if you were lucky. People were going to Bellingham and Anacortes for their dentistry.

“We were headed to the East Sound of Orcas Island,” he said. “They had a dental office for us, but no equipment.

“Before we got on the ferry, we stopped on San Juan Island and went into a drugstore where we were told that San Juan Island is actually more convenient than Orcas Island for everyone on every island to get to. We thought that was a bummer.

“Our band had good musicians, and I really miss the big bands.”

Back to the islandsRetiring from UCLA, Dr. Jeannet returned north in 1998. He remarried in 1999, to Anna, a former patient from 40 years prior. Dr. and Mrs. Jeannet tore down Dr. Jeannet’s vacation home and built a permanent home, completed in 2004.

“It’s a different group of people up here,” he said, during a phone call one rare rainy afternoon from Friday Harbor.

“The property values have gone up so much that many people can’t afford to live here.

“There were 14,000 people on all the islands at last count. It’s a changing place.

“I have a bad back from dentistry and foot trouble,” he said. “Then I had prostate cancer and I had to give up fly fishing because of the care you have to take not to fall.”

Dr. Jeannet said he is “out of the music business” and ties fishing flies in his spare time.

“I miss dentistry,” he said. “I’m still running into kids I had as patients 30 to 40 years ago. It was a lot of fun.”

“So we took a vote as a family and ended up going to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island instead.” Dr. Jeannet practiced in Friday Harbor for 13 years.

“For many years, I was the only dentist in the county,” he said. “I knew all the people on all the other islands.

“We used to travel by ferry to ‘America’ as we called it,” said Dr. Jeannet. “You knew everyone on the ferry, the farmers and business owners and teachers. The quality of life was great.”

Los Angeles: Dentistry and MusicIn 1973, Dr. Jeannet joined the faculty at University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry, in their crown and bridge department.

“There weren’t many on the faculty who’d been doing dentistry for very long,” he said. “The dental students, however, were excellent. I had 25 dental students to mentor in every class and wet-nursed them all.”

Four OHSU dental alumni also were on the UCLA faculty around that time, said Dr. Jeannet, including William Riter, D.M.D. ’55 and James Grenfell, D.M.D. ’63.

“The group from Oregon were so far ahead from anything I’ve ever seen,” he said. “When people ask me to recommend a dentist, I tell them to find out where the dentist went to school and if they went to Oregon, go there. You can’t believe how good the Oregon and Washington-trained dentists are.”

While at UCLA, Dr. Jeannet had divorced and remarried, to Mary. Dr. Jeannet was on the UCLA faculty for 23 years. He also supervised dental students in a low-income clinic for a few years after he left the faculty. (Mary died in 1997).

In high school, Dr. Jeannet had learned to play the trumpet and, while in Los Angeles, he managed a 19-piece swing band, “D.J.’s Doctors of Swing.”

“We played all over Los Angeles, including the Palladium, the backyard of the hotel magnate, Baron Hilton, and aboard the Queen Mary,” he said. “We got to know all the big-name musicians, including Johnny Carson’s musicians.

New Student Scholarship

Willamette Dental Foundation (WDF) recently pledged $75,000 for dental student scholarships at the OHSU School of Dentistry. The gift will provide two annual scholarships: $55,000 for one third-year dental student, and $10,000 for one fourth-year dental student.

“Willamette Dental has long been providing scholarships to the dental school, but this is a new five-year agreement,” said Alumni Relations and Development Director Pat Regan.

To qualify for the scholarships, dental students must be interested in practicing in a group practice after graduation. Students must complete an application to be considered. The first scholarships will be awarded in spring 2010.

Eugene Skourtes, D.M.D. ’68, founded Willamette Dental in 1970, with one Portland office, which has now grown to more than 50 offices throughout the Northwest. The WDF was founded in 2000 to provide funding that supports the training and education of dentists.

When Rich Knight, D.M.D. ’79, was about 10-years-old, he watched his father and his regular Sunday golf buddies do

“gimmes” while putting, counting anything within two feet of the hole as having been sunk. A week later, when young Richard returned home after playing a round of golf on his own, he announced to his dad his “best golf day ever!” Richard then explained to his dad that he had modified his father’s definition of a “gimmie” to count any putt on the green as good.

“My dad got a funny look on his face and said, ‘But, Rich, that’s cheating!’ ” recalls Dr. Knight.

That experience – and another when his mother reminded him as a teen to honor a commitment he’d made to a younger boy – were among many that taught Dr. Knight the values of honesty, integrity, trust, and accountability. He believes values continue to be developed and clarified throughout our lives. The values he has developed form the foundation of his message of “Caring” which he has presented this year for such audiences as the Oregon International College of Dentists and the faculty conference of the OHSU School of Dentistry.

Dr. Knight is a former Alumni Association president (2007-2008) and the School’s first recipient of the prestigious Stephen Peglow Award, an honor given annually to one graduating OHSU dental student who most exemplifies professionalism. He is married to Honey, R.D.H., and they have three children and two grandchildren.

“I want to deal with people fairly in ways that benefit them as well as me,” said Dr. Knight, during the OHSU SOD faculty conference in late September. “Caring for others doesn’t mean that I treat everybody the same way. I will treat various people in different ways depending on their needs, cultural background, and communication style.”

“I want to treat people with respect and to show they matter to me. When this is done honestly, it can provide a framework for establishing trust.” Dr. Knight said he tries to set his ego aside and avoids putting himself in situations where one person gains at the expense of another. He looks for common ground upon which to develop relationships.

“People will sense when someone cares,” he said. “Caring can mean different things to different people. Our job as dentists is to determine the person’s needs and then organize our caring and treatment around those needs.”

“I believe caring exists when one has the desire to connect with and value other people.” Dr. Knight said caring only happens with effective forethought. “Caring requires that the caregiver is able to sense or ask in what form the recipient wants the care to be given.”

Being honest, caring, and compassionate to others, consistently aligning his actions with values, being a life-long learner, holding himself and others accountable, and striving to do what is right in every situation are parts of Dr. Knight’s professional vision.

He describes his leadership style as a dentist and a teacher/facilitator as one who models the way. “To create new behaviors in others, those behaviors must be modeled in a safe environment where it is okay to make mistakes and to learn from them. I try to speak professionally and respectfully to patients, students, and co-workers. I also respect them for who they are, rather than how I want them to be. I use my interactions with patients to model the professional behavior I want to see the students exhibit. Each patient interaction is a potential learning experience.”

He also tries to enable others to act by encouraging them to trust themselves and be unafraid to make mistakes while learning. “When I was in dental school, it was not uncommon for teaching to occur through fear or intimidation,” said Dr. Knight. “A safe and caring environment allows students to relax and learn more effectively.”

Dr. Knight suggests trusting others and at the same time holding them accountable. To build trust, he recommends discussing openly in front of others how you trust that person.

“I make a conscious effort to create a climate that will encourage and sustain trust,” he said. “It is important to be open to input and consider each person’s alternate viewpoint. I also like to celebrate others’ victories and recognize publicly the commitment and contribution of others.”

“I have seen all these values, leadership, and teaching styles within the School faculty, staff, and administration,” including such alumni as Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, Jim Tinkle, D.M.D. ’79, Don Sirianni, D.M.D. ’64, Peter Morita, D.M.D. ’86, Bob Quinn, D.M.D. ’55, Bill Bonniksen, D.M.D. ’75, John Lee, D.D.S., and Mike Hoag, D.M.D. ’76.

“Gone are the days of the classroom where the teacher looks at the students as empty vessels to be filled with the teacher’s knowledge,” said Dr. Knight. Now is a time where we as “facilitators” need to appreciate the knowledge the students already have and help them along their journey to a greater understanding. We all are students and we all help each other on that lifelong journey. I learn something new each day!”

Newsletter of the OHSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association Winter 2009

The OHSU School of Dentistry was revitalized this fall in preparation for a rigorous once-every-seven year accreditation process through the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the arm of the American Dental Association that accredits all United States dental education programs.

The outside of the School was painted, the landscaping re-done, and many repairs inside that had been delayed were made, said Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64. “It is safe to say that we are looking a little better facilities-wise,” he said, “thanks to efforts for our accreditation visit and projects within the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.” (See story, page two).

In early October, a 15-person accreditation team conducted three days of on-campus interviews, observations, and discussions. A final report is expected by the end of the year.

“It’s over!” said Phyllis Beemsterboer, M.S., Ed.D., associate dean for academic affairs, who led the Accreditation Steering Committee (Jack Ferracane, Ph.D., chair and professor of restorative dentistry; Mark Mitchell, M.A., associate dean for student affairs; Denice Stewart, D.D.S., M.H.S.A., associate dean for clinical affairs; Tom Shearer, Ph.D., associate dean for research; and Ron Sakaguchi, Ph.D., D.D.S., M.B.A., associate dean for research innovation) that prepared an intensive self-study document for the programs selected for the visit: doctor of dental medicine, endodontics, periodontics, and orthodontics. (Oral and maxillofacial surgery is on a five-year accreditation cycle. Pediatric dentistry just

received its accreditation so is on a different review cycle).

“Our preliminary report is that we did very well,” said Dean Clinton. “The 15 consultants affirmed that we are just about as good as we think we are and that is a reflection of our faculty, staff, and dental students.

“In the preliminary report, there were no significant concerns about any part of any of our programs and there were strengths found in every program,” he said.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome and there were no surprises. Everyone can be very proud.”

While at the School, the accreditation team commented on the excellent preparation of the self-study document, the high level of energy throughout the School, the camaraderie amongst all School constituencies, and the friendly and cooperative attitude within the School. They were also “impressed” by the group practice structure, the number of dental students participating in research, and the integration of critical thinking into the curriculum.

“Our goal of emphasizing customer service and interpersonal relations through the ACE (Advisory Committee on Excellence), the hiring of Ben Bernstein, Ph.D., (see page 30) and the summer remodel of the patient reception center, all were noticed by the reviewers,” said Dean Clinton,

“which is a validation of what we’re trying to do at the School. It serves as an even greater stimulus for us to keep going.”

new Dental Student nhSC ScholarsThe School has four new National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholars. First-year dental students Trevor Friederes and Clark Brinton, and third-year dental students Anne McLean and Philip Getsinger, recently received word that they will receive four-year and two -year scholarships respectively, from the NHSC. NHSC scholars receive tuition, fees, school-related living expenses, and a stipend, in exchange for two- to four-years of service in an NHSC-approved health site. Fourth-year dental students Erin Estep and Timothy Schmidt already are NHSC scholars, said Mark Mitchell, M.A., associate dean for student affairs.

Dental Students tackle Spanish to Care for patientsSecond-year dental student Orrin Mackey spoke fluent Spanish during college. But he was surprised upon entering dental school how many Spanish terms he didn’t know.

That’s why when OHSU’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) began offering informal Spanish classes several times a

month, Orrin chose to participate.

“I wanted the opportunity to use my Spanish skills and especially further my exposure to dental vocabulary,” said Orrin. “By having this base in the language, I will improve my communication with Spanish-speaking patients and enjoy treating them more.”

Cynthia Scheines, D.D.S., Ph.D., assistant professor of periodontology, is a native Argentinian and has been instrumental in teaching the handful of dental students in the Spanish classes, said HSDA Founder and second-year dental student Jim Bell.

“We would not have been able to progress as quickly as we have without the training she has provided,” said Jim.

During Spanish class, the dental students practice clinical Spanish, role-playing such clinic interactions as taking a medical history, asking patients about symptoms they are experiencing, and reviewing treatment plan options.

“I had a basic understanding of the Spanish language before, but let’s face it, ‘dental Spanish’ is not conversational Spanish,” said second-year dental student Matt Harris. “These classes are giving me the basic building blocks to treat Spanish-speaking patients without an interpreter. I would love for a part of my future practice’s patient pool to be Spanish-speaking and these classes are giving me the dental and medical vocabulary to do so.”

Jim was the one who initiated the Spanish language classes when he founded the HSDA a year ago. “I am a firm believer that when speaking Spanish to our Spanish-speaking clients, we should use the proper language and terms of dentistry and explain as needed to clarify to our patients, just as we would in English,” said Jim.

“We should sound like dentists whether we’re speaking in English or Spanish.

“For every skill, we are developing in dentistry, we practice, practice, practice before we get to the clinic,” he said. “Why should our Spanish skills be any different?

“I feel much more confident speaking to patients in Spanish regarding dental needs due to the instruction we have had,” said Jim. “I also feel that as we direct ourselves in a professional manner to Spanish-speaking clients in their language, they are more satisfied with the care they receive and can more easily place their care in our trust.”

First-year Dental Students in Full SwingSeventy-five new OHSU dental students recently finished their first courses – six-week sessions in gross anatomy, introduction to professionalism, history of dentistry, and introductory patient assessment and diagnosis – and are now enmeshed in the full fall term curriculum.

“The air is electric!” said School of Dentistry Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, greeting the class of 2013. “As it should be. Most of you have been waiting for this day for two, three,

five, and even 10 years. We are here to convince you as soon as possible that you made an excellent choice in coming to this school. There is a long tradition of excellence at OHSU and we are absolutely sure we will take all 75 of you to the next level of your education.”

The 75 first-year dental students were selected from 1,132 applicants, said Mark Mitchell, M.A., associate dean for student affairs. Forty-seven of the first-year dental students are from Oregon, 20 are from WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education) states, and eight are from other western states. Ten are Asian Pacific Islanders, one is Hispanic, and one is Native American. Fifty of the first-year dental students are men and 25 are women. The median age is 25.

Like many of the new dental students interviewed, Jennifer Snarskis, 25, from Portland, Ore., admitted to a little nervousness – and a lot of excitement.

“It’s good to finally be here,” said the University of Oregon biology major. “I like the health care field and dentists seem so well-balanced with their personal and professional lives. Also, you can see the progress of the person that you’re trying to help.”

The overall grade point average of the incoming class is 3.61. Six of the first-year dental students have either double-majored or received two bachelor’s degrees, said Mark.

Six from the class of 2013 have OHSU School of Dentistry relatives, including Richard Bohnstedt (son of Stanley Bohnstedt, D.M.D. ’85), Jarid Burley (husband of Katie Burley, D.M.D. ’08, R.D.H. ’02), Kelly Gilmore (daughter of Vernon Gilmore, D.M.D. ’73), Emily Jones (daughter of Mark S. Jones, D.M.D. ’83), Jillana Pollard (daughter of Thomas Pollard, D.M.D. ’74), and Kristopher Scholes, (son of Harold Scholes, D.M.D. ’67, and brother of Kendall Scholes, D.M.D. ’92). One new student, Kyle Malloy, is the son of longtime prosthodontics faculty member Charles

“Mark” Malloy, D.M.D., M.S.

Dean Clinton noted that competitiveness is downplayed at the dental school in favor of group practices, which he likened to a team sport.

“This is a place where it’s okay for everyone to excel at the same time,” he said. “Our goal is a 4.0 for all of you and 75 graduates come 2013.”

First-year dental students were at Cannon Beach Sept. 3 and 4 for their annual off-site teambuilding conference.

“The weather was perfect,” said Mark. “Our theme this year was ‘On Becoming a Dentist’.”

Dental Students Reach OutOHSU School of Dentistry students stepped out of the pre-doctoral clinic recently to provide education and care in the community.

Family Resource FairFour dental students attended the Family Resource Fair at the Beaverton City Library on Oct. 17, educating children and their families about oral hygiene, nutrition, and how to handle dental emergencies. About 350 children and families attended the free fair.

“We provided information to parents about how to take care of their kids’ mouths, and we passed out pamphlets,” said fourth-year dental student Vicky Chen, who coordinated the School’s participation for the American Student Dental Association. “We also passed out oral hygiene supplies to families present.”

In addition to Vicky, dental students participating included second-year dental student Orrin Mackey, third-year dental student Tim Carpenter, and fourth-year dental student Allison Hallin.

Special Olympics Special SmilesOn September 16, two pediatric dentistry residents and several Pacific University dental hygiene students helped screen and conduct oral hygiene instructions for the state’s Special Olympics Special Smiles athletes and their families. Dozens of young athletes and their families visited the School of Dentistry tent during the event held on the Nike campus in Beaverton, said Phyllis Beemsterboer, M.S., Ed.D., associate dean for academic affairs.

critical thinking and treatment planning. Dividing into their already assigned group practices, the first-year dental students were asked to develop treatment plans for hypothetical patients.

Six second- through fourth-year dental students led their respective group practices in the treatment planning exercise. The associate deans at the retreat served as experts in various areas – such as ethics, prosthodontics, and periodontology – that the groups could use in developing the many treatment plans for presenting to their patients.

“As a dentist, and certainly as a dental student, there is a high expectation because our focus is to learn and apply knowledge to serve people,” said Dean Clinton. “The people that are relying upon us are relying upon our ability to improve their health. Any compromise to doing anything less than the best we can is injurious to our patients. So there is no compromise in absolute integrity.”

Peter Morita, D.M.D. ’86, associate dean for patient services, led the students in a discussion about being a dental student, which was presented by upper class dental students. Each first-year dental student received a Class of 2013 sweatshirt, courtesy of the School of Dentistry Alumni Association.

The conference ended with a sand sculpture “contest” under sunny skies. Each bridge group was charged with creating a hands-on exhibit for a hypothetical Children’s Museum of Dentistry. School Alumni Relations and Development Director Pat Regan “judged” the friendly competition, which included sculptures ranging from teeth and tongues to SpongeBob SquarePants and an alligator.

“This is a journey, an enjoyable journey, I hope, and we’re going to work our tails off,” said Dean Clinton. “Welcome, have fun, it’s a great place to be and we’re happy that you’re here.”

Fourth-year dental students demonstrated their skills in diagnosis and treatment planning during the School’s first Objective Standardized Clinical Examination (OSCE) in mid-August. This was the first large-scale OSCE performed at the School. It was designed to assess student clinical skills as a precursor to competency.

“This was an educational first for us,” said Denice Stewart, D.D.S., M.H.S.A., associate dean for clinical affairs. “We have been performing student competencies for many years, but we think OSCE’s are a better way to evaluate students’ performance for these particular clinical skills.”

At the OSCE, fourth-year dental students went from station to station demonstrating orally such competencies as head and neck exams, vitals taking, evaluating patient medications’ impact on dental care, performing informed consent, and radiographic analysis. There were 10 stations and seven minutes allotted for each. Nineteen staff members volunteered their time as “patients” and two dozen faculty were on hand for grading.

“It was great to see everyone working together,” said Dr. Stewart. “It gave the faculty and staff an opportunity to see the dental students in a different light and I think the dental students saw the faculty and staff differently, as well. The OSCE went a long way in having us think collaboratively about why we’re here: providing high-quality care for our patients and an excellent education for our students.”

The next OSCE, for the third-year dental students, is slated for winter term.

A National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research R25 grant, received in the spring of 2007, is successfully promoting critical thinking and the use of scientific evidence throughout the School of Dentistry, said Ron Sakaguchi, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., M.B.A., associate dean for research and innovation, who is the principal investigator.

From receipt of the grant in 2007 to winter 2009, course content hours and class exercises in evidence-based decision making have increased from 37 hours to 88, said Dr. Sakaguchi. In the same period, use of scientific literature increased from 52 hours to 116 and research methods increased from 16 hours to 22.

The R25 grant has funded two faculty development sessions with John Rugh, Ph.D., professor and chair of orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Dr. Rugh led the dental school faculty in exercises called CATs, Critically Appraised Topics, to discover and apply scientific evidence to clinical questions and treatment decisions.

In May, thanks to the R25 grant, the School held its first Research Day, to encourage research by showcasing scientific projects by dental students, staff, and faculty. About 35 researchers participated and plans are underway for a Research Day on April 26, 2010.

This fall, the R25 grant inspired three teams of dental students to compete for the opportunity to present research findings and search strategy at the 2009 PROH (Practice-based Research in Oral Health) conference. The teams researched controversial clinical topics, identified opposing viewpoints, reviewed relevant literature, and presented their results to a panel of basic science and clinical faculty, in early November.

“This was an excellent opportunity for dental students to refine research skills, and to teach others about applying evidence to dental decisions,” said Dr. Sakaguchi.

Second-year dental student Brittany Fox, third-year dental student Katie Marsh, and fourth-year dental student Jason Walker were selected to present their CAT on the effect of smoking, periodontal disease, and bisphonate therapy on implant performance. They presented their research at the annual PROH conference, alongside five OHSU faculty teams.

“This experience has helped me become a better dentist,” said Jason. “To provide quality care to our future patients, we need to make sure that we support our clinical decisions with strong clinical evidence. I don’t believe that every patient that comes through our doors will require a literature review. However, knowing where to look for answers to unfamiliar problems will be a valuable skill.

The annual meeting was Sept. 19 at Salishan, Ore., with about 100 people attending.Dr. Baumgartner presented a humorous montage of stories and photos of the 54 OHSU endodontic residents who have graduated from OHSU during his 18-year tenure. Former OHSU endodontology residents flew in from as far away as Cleveland, Ohio, for the event.

The OSAE presented Dr. Baumgartner with travel and golf certificates, and wife, Teddi, with Nordstrom and spa gift cards.

Dean Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, and wife, Mary attended, and the Dean presented Dr. Baumgartner with an engraved clock and barometer from the School of Dentistry.

“Craig is one of a very select few of the most respected scientists and clinicians in the United States and certainly enjoys an international reputation as one of the most knowledgeable endodontists and educators in the world,” said Dean Clinton. “He has brought great visibility and credibility to OHSU and to our endodontic program which is regarded as one of the premier advanced specialty programs in the United States.”

Dr. Baumgartner received his bachelor of science in pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his doctor of dental science at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

After dental school, Dr. Baumgartner was a general dentistry officer with the 90th Medical Detachment of the U.S. Army, based in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

He then entered an endodontic residency program at the Army Institute of Dental Research in Washington, D.C., and went on to receive a master’s degree in oral biology from George Washington University, and a certificate of specialty training in endodontics from the Army Institute of Dental Research, Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington.

In 1975, Dr. Baumgartner was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, where he was chief of the endodontic service in the U.S. Eighth Army. In addition, he lectured and taught at Seoul National University.

psychologist and health Care Coach Joins School

Nationally recognized health care psychologist and coach Ben Bernstein, Ph.D., has joined the School faculty as an affiliate

assistant professor of community dentistry.

Dr. Bernstein will offer guidance to the School’s Advisory Committee on Excellence (ACE), which is charged with boosting service excellence.

A teacher for 40 years and psychologist for 30, Dr. Bernstein focuses on helping people who work in high-stress situations.

“Being invited to join the ACE team is part of a dream,” said Dr. Bernstein.

“We will be working to address issues that are common to dental schools across the country.”

R25 Grant (continued from page 29)

“The dentist’s role in the broad scheme of health care is evolving and we need to embrace these changes and apply them in our day-to-day patient interactions.”

The R25 grant also is making research awards available. In 2010, dental students will be able to apply for what will be known as the Dean’s Student Research Fellowship. Students selected will receive a $2,000 stipend and $500 for travel to present their research at the annual meeting of the American Association for Dental Research.

“We hope the availability of this funding will encourage even more dental students to apply for and get involved in research,” said Dr. Sakaguchi.

The following year, Dr. Baumgartner was endodontic director of the general practice residency at Letterman Army Medical Center, an endodontic consultant, and adjunct assistant professor at the University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco. He was transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was chief of the endodontic service for the Salomon Dental Clinic.

In 1981, he joined Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., as assistant director of the endodontic residency program at the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research, later rising to director of the program and being promoted to Colonel. He then attended the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland, and received a Ph.D in microbiology/immunology. While there, he was an associate professor in the department of endodontics. He returned to the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research, Walter Reed Medical Center and was Dental Corps Chief of the Microbiology Branch. Dr. Baumgartner received numerous medals and commendations from the U.S. Army including the Meritorious Service Award.

In 1991, he joined OHSU as associate professor, chair of the Department of Endodontology, and director of the advanced dental education program in endodontics, with a co-appointment to the department of oral molecular biology. Dr. Baumgartner also maintained a private practice, within OHSU’s Faculty Dental Practice.

In 1996, Dr. Baumgartner was promoted to professor with tenure.

Dr. Baumgartner has held many committee appointments and consultancies, including the American Association of Endodontics Committee of Diagnostic Terminology (2008), the oral exam committee for the American Board of Endodontics (2003-06), and the steering committee for the American Board of Endodontics (2003-08).

His major research interests are microbiological and immunological aspects of endodontic infections, and materials and methods used in endodontics, and he has written numerous chapters, over 100 journal articles, and many abstracts in these areas. He co-edited the sixth edition of Ingle’s Endodontics (2008), was president of the American

Board of Endodontics (2007-08), and received the OHSU Distinguished Faculty Award in 2004. On June 4, Dr. Baumgartner was appointed professor emeritus of endodontology.

Dr. Baumgartner has acted as research advisor to dozens of graduate and postgraduate students, and supervised visiting research scientists on sabbatical. His invited state, national, and international presentations number in the hundreds. He is a frequent continuing education presenter for OHSU.

“My professional life grew just from being around him for 18 years,” said Jim Tinkle, D.M.D. ’79, associate professor emeritus of endodontology. “His curriculum vitae reads like a dean’s ‘wish list’ for a faculty member. He is a bright and well-educated man, a mentor, a great teacher at all levels, a prolific and respected researcher, a terrific clinician, and remains a nice guy.”

Said Dean Clinton, “While we will miss Craig, we have been very successful in recruiting our next endodontology chair.

Christine Sedgley, B.D.S., M.D.Sc., M.D.S., F.R.A.C.D.S., Ph.D., will join OHSU Jan. 1. Dr. Sedgley is currently assistant professor in the department of cariology, restorative sciences and endodontics, at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

“Christine has already been on our campus several times to engage in the transition, and Craig has kindly agreed to help in this process,” said Dean Clinton. “We look forward to more formally introducing Christine when she is here full time next year.”

new Grant for Dr. LampiKirsten Lampi, Ph.D., professor of integrative biosciences, recently received five grants totaling nearly $1.5 million. Dr. Lampi’s research focuses on the effects of deamidation

– a kind of protein modification – on beta-crystallins, structural proteins found in the lens of the eye, necessary for maintaining lens transparency. She has shown that deamidation decreases protein stability leading to aggregation, a potential mechanism for cataracts. Dr. Lampi received a four-year, $1.3 million grant from the NIH to study the role of deamidation in beta-crystallin structures. She also received a two-year, $75,000 grant from the NIH to study the lens membranes in eyes. Additional funding was provided from the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon ($39,300), OHSU Presidential Bridge Funding ($48,090), and an anonymous $15,000 gift.
