Feels Like HomeLetter From Executive Director and Board President

It’s been about 10 months since we moved into the Garden Street building — residents are settling in, clients and members are getting accustomed to the new beautiful surroundings, and our staff is adapting to life with multipurpose meeting spaces, and storage. It’s really a miracle for all of us. Before our existence on Garden Street, our world was very fragmented and cramped. Now it certainly feels like we are a family under one roof.

We take great pride and joy looking out from the office windows and observing the activity in the Recovery Learning Center at the Fellowship Club courtyard and residents as well as staff coming and going from the building. As mental health advocates, it’s good to know that our relocation has had a tremendously positive psychological health effect on all of us — staff, members, clients, residents, family members and volunteers. Our message is both subtle and overt that our clients deserve a beautiful setting and comfortable home.

Annmarie Cameron executive director

David Prenatt President, Board of directors

We all feel a resurgence of inspiration, motivation and rededication to our mission. The value of our new stable foundation is truly tangible and has created an improved “base” from which to work and grow. We long wished for a single place where people could come to get support, housing, education, practical support, look for a job, find a place to live… a place from which to better relate to our neighbors and family. Well, here we are, and it really feels like home.

Ironically and unfortunately, we now have three times more space and due to recent budget cuts, we have fifty percent less funding for programs and services. Our mission to meet the needs of our clients and families depends on the continued generosity of our community. Please help us by making a fully tax deductible donation today.

Mental illness is a community issue that affects every one of us — not just the person living with the illness. And we truly believe that it is part of an overall healthy community to have a strong resource for people to rely on to get the information and help that they need, and that is what we are here for.

Sincerely,

Annmarie Cameron David Prenatt Executive Director President, Board of Directors

How does the Mental Health Association in Santa Barbara County (MHA) serve your needs?

They’ve really helped me in repairing my shattered spirit. Having a safe and secure living arrangement makes living with my emotional “ups and downs” easier, because I know when the world becomes a bit too much, I can take a warm bath or close the door to my bedroom and have a good cry in private. I can just breathe!

What was your living situation prior to moving into the MHA facility, Building Hope? Before coming here, I was suffering alone. My depression was deeper and I was losing my faith. I was exhausted… my spirit was broken. I was living in a very tiny room and all of my money went towards paying my rent. I was left

with nothing. I was always broke and extremely depressed. I felt so alone. That was the hardest part for me before — feeling so isolated and scared.

Can you tell me how having affordable housing has changed your life?

It has allowed me to afford a beautiful apartment and to be able to pay my bills. I love it here! I have my own bedroom… and a closet! I have a beautiful view and a great ocean breeze. Living here has given me back hope and faith. I am not only living, but I am beginning to thrive! My health is getting better and on some days I have an intense feeling of happiness.

How do you feel about your new home at Garden Street?

I love it. I love everything about it. I’ve made friends and we can discuss our illnesses, and I don’t feel so alone anymore. It’s peaceful here… that’s what I love the most. I feel safe. I can ride my bike or walk wherever I need to. It’s a beautiful building and it has restored my hope and faith. I look around me, and every day I am thankful for this miracle. Some people may see this is as just another building, but to many of us, we see this as a new beginning. We call this our “home.”

What sorts of activities or programs do you participate in at the Recovery Learning Center at the Fellowship Club?

We have groups like Neighborhood Watch, which I am a part of. We also have a Seeking Safety group, which I like. I belong to a women’s group, and that helps my self-esteem. All these programs help me understand that I am not alone with my illness. I participate in our potlucks. We have art sessions that I love. I’ll also be in this year’s Arts Festival, so I’m really excited about that. I feel our new home was built from a lot of caring and a lot of love for humanity. How can anyone go wrong with caring and love being the foundation? This is a beautiful building with a lot to offer, and I thank everyone involved. •

I am not only living,

but I am beginning to thrive!

Economic Stress continued from page 4.

Keep physically and mentally healthy. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep and exercising are critical to dealing with stress and anxiety. In addition, allowing yourself enough personal time can help clear your mind of negative thoughts. Exercise (especially mind and body exercise such as yoga) activates positive feelings. Avoid quick fix solutions such as overeating or using substances that may make you temporarily feel better.

Do not isolate yourself. Talking to someone can help you understand your fears and may even help you get over some of them. This could mean talking to a professional financial advisor about your situation or simply talking to a friend or family member. Join a community activity, take a recreational class or reestablish religious community connections.

Help Others. Even though you may be the one who needs help, you’d be amazed how good things can come to those who serve others. It will also make you feel better and show you that you are not the only one dealing with issues.

Know resources that are available to you. We are all fortunate to be residents of Santa Barbara, which is full of amazing social services programs and resources that can help us. Everything from housing assistance, economic advisors, emotional support, and counseling can be found at little or no cost in Santa Barbara. Call 211 in Santa Barbara and find out what services are available for your specific needs. •

NAMI South Santa Barbara County is a chapter of the state and national NAMI organizations. Locally NAMI operates as an auxiliary of the Mental Health Association. NAMI members assist with MHA programs for consumers and families, including the teaching of a free 12-week Family-to-Family education series, offered twice a year in the spring and fall. Contact our Family Advocate at 884-8440 to inquire about the classes.

NAMI’s Fall Family-to-Family Classes: New Series for UCSB Students Added to Classes for Local FamiliesBy Jan Winter

NAMI South Santa Barbara County is celebrating nine years of providing Family-to-Family classes to persons who have a mentally ill loved one. The free 12-week series teaches folks the essentials of mental illness: how it affects the brain, treatments, medications, coping and communication skills, and more. Nearly 450 families

Feeling stressed about the collapsed economy? You are not alone — and there are ways to cope and reduce your anxiety. While the Mental Health Association focuses mainly on those with serious and mental health issues, we are also concerned with the state of the community’s mental health as a whole. Here are some tips to help reduce your stress:

Evaluate your finances and expenses.Be honest about your current financial situation. Set a financial goal and stick to it. Include your family and clearly explain why you are making the difficult financial decisions. Do not create more debt.

Create a plan. We feel better when we feel in control. Come up with a plan of action for how to adapt to the changing financial conditions. This could include measures such as postponing a planned vacation or home renovation, increasing revenue by taking extra hours at work or renting out a room in your house.

have benefited from the series — offered twice a year since 2000 — and the Fall class currently under way at the Mental Health Association was over-subscribed with 30 members.

This year, NAMI members Ann Lippincott, Mary Rae Staton and Sabina White, all of whom work at UCSB and all of whom have taught the Family-to-Family curriculum for our NAMI chapter, spent much of last year working out details for the inaugural Family-to-Family course for UCSB students.

They met with Dean of Students, Yonnie Harris, and Angela Andrade, Assistant Dean of Students and Coordinator of the campus Mental Health Initiative. Samantha Arigapudi, a mental health intern who works in Angela Andrade’s office, advertised the course and made phone calls. Samantha also made photocopies of the enormous binder full of Family-to-Family readings and resources for each week, set up the class each week, and provided support for Ann and Mary who taught this first campus Family-to-Family course.

While a small class (only 9 students), it was mighty! Across the quarter, few missed even one class session and all who started finished the course! We look forward to offering another Family-to-Family course for UCSB students in spring quarter. Ultimately, we hope to offer the courses for faculty and staff on campus.

Look for Good News. Some people can feel their anxiety and stress level rising when they are exposed it; if this sounds familiar, try taking a walk or listening to some music to get your mind off of the situation. Look for the good news, too, and try to find a nice balance.

Concentrate on things you can control. There are many factors associated with this economic crisis that are completely beyond your control, and focusing on these things can make you feel powerless. Instead, try to focus on the things that you can do something about.

Keep things in perspective. It’s only money — easier said than believed, but try to remember that things like your health and your friends and family are truly the most important things in life. Remember, many people are going through exactly the same thing you are going through now.

Study Shows Those with Serious Mental Illness Die 25 Years Earlier,

On AverageAdults with serious mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and clinical depression, die on average 25 years earlier than Americans overall, according to research by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The research shows that, on average, those with mental illness die at age 51, while the general population dies at age 76. They die from heart disease and cancer at alarming rates because they don’t get early screenings and treatment.

The Mental Health Association in Santa Barbara County would like to bring this issue to the community’s attention as further evidence of the need for improved and better coordinated health care for people living with mental illness.

These findings are devastating to the mental health community and to those with mental illnesses; they confirm what our clients experience in a health care system that is failing them. It is important that we all recognize the magnitude of these statistics and work to help change these numbers.

There is hope for those living with mental illness. The study also indicates early health screenings, exercising, taking the right medications, maintaining proper nutrition, and seeking appropriate help with staying away from drugs and alcohol are all important steps to take.

The Mental Health Association in Santa Barbara County provides educational opportunities and promotes self-help recovery groups that assist individuals to find the local resources to improve their overall health. We urge both adults living with mental illness and their family members to consider these high risks and take necessary steps in promoting their health and getting proper care to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Visit the Mental Health Association at Our New Web Site!Following the completion and move into our beautiful new building on Garden Street, the Mental Health Association also has a new look — on the web! The site has been redesigned to better meet the needs of anyone who is looking for more information about us and what we do to serve those living with mental illness and their family members, as well as the general community.

While our site remains at the same address (www.mhainsb.org) it has been reconstructed to include more information and resources, with a very user-friendly navigation. When you visit our new site, you will now find information about our services, NAMI, services for family members, a photo gallery and a media room where you can keep up to date with our news and what’s going on at the Mental Health Association. We are proud to feature the beautiful artwork of our talented clients throughout the pages and provide a welcoming feel to people who are surfing through our site.

We are also excited to announce that potential donors can now make contributions to the Mental Health Association with the click of a button. Our new web site features a ‘How to Help’ page where people who are looking to contribute can make an online donation, or learn about volunteer opportunities.

The Mental Health Association is pleased to share its resources online in this digital age and have the ability to have a strong presence in all areas. So check out photos from past events, follow our news stories and learn more about our services at www.mhainsb.org. Dig in!
