God documents this additional error in wonderfully picturesque language in Jeremiah 2:13-14, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” We do not just turn away from a total dependence on and love for God; we turn to lifeless, powerless substitutes. Whether we want to admit it or not, these substitutes are known as idols (of which there is no shortage in modern America). D. Martin Lloyd-Jones put it well when he said, “An idol is anything in our lives that occupies the place that should be occupied by God alone. Anything that is central in my life, anything that seems to me Essential. An idol is anything by which I live and on which I depend, anything that holds such a controlling position in my life that it moves and rouses and attracts so much of my time and attention, my energy and my money.” Many of these idols are prevalent in the culture as a whole – hence the theme American Idols. As a Christian school, we battle temptation in this regard on several fronts. As I develop this theme through the year, I will examine the ways in which several seemingly innocuous, even good things can supplant our dependence on and love for Christ alone. These are academic excellence, moralism, sports, and safety and security (or, as Francis Schaeffer put it, personal peace and affluence). I will do my best to show how we can still strive for the good in these things while avoiding the pitfall of idolatry. In everything we do at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, my prayer is that we would always remember, “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” Psalm 36:9

There has probably never been a more chilling accusation for God’s people than the charge in Revelation 2:4, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.” Unfortunately, we rarely let it stop there.

An idol is anything by which I live and on which I depend, anything that holds such a controlling position in my life that it moves and rouses and attracts so much of my time and attention,

my energy and my money.”

Many of these idols are prevalent in the culture as a whole – hence the theme American Idols.

American Idols - Leaving Our First Love

“Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken your first love.” Revelation 2:42

We expect another tremendous year in the Lower School! With a strong core of returning teachers, we stand poised to hit the ground running. Our first year with the new writing program was a tremendous success, and Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Halbrooks have excellent plans for the upcoming year in the Writing Lab for grades 1 through 4, while Mrs. Thompson continues to shepherd the fifth and sixth graders. Our newest teacher, Mrs. Glenda Briley, is excitedly preparing to work through a new curriculum for K4 through grade 6 Music, and is also readying fun student programs and studying possibilities for the addition of an after-school Middle School-age student audition choir. We look forward to the growth of three teachers in new positions, with the move of Mrs. Debbie Crews to third grade, Mrs. Ginger Ward to half day kindergarten, and Mrs. Sandy Pasqualotto to the full day kindergarten. We are also excited to welcome so many new families into our school community, and look forward to the gifts they bring.

As we think of and pray for each of our teachers preparing and looking forward to the upcoming year, we would request that you remember to lift up Mrs. Miriam Kinworthy. Mrs. K., who teaches our fifth and sixth grade math and science, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer earlier this summer. She has begun treatments following surgery, and we look forward to

her return, as she is able. Please pray for healing and strength as she deals with this disease. These upcoming months bring great anticipation and talk of new buildings and tremendous opportunities for continued growth. We anticipate continual improvement along the way as we wait upon the Lord and the incredible work that He will continue in the life of the school and so many young people. May He bless you richly as you continue your partnership with us throughout this coming school year. In Christ,
