The Rust Nature Sanctuary is the Audubon Naturalist Society’s newest sanctuary. It includes a manor house on 68 acres of an old farm, mature woods, meadows, and a large pond. Beaver, deer, foxes, wild turkeys, owls, woodpeckers and other wildlife make their homes at Rust. Nature Storybooks (PreK and K) – Children will make their favorite storybooks come to life – exploring the forest, pond and meadows and learning about the wonderful plants and animals in them. Children will also sing songs, play games and make crafts to enhance what they learned. Forest Friends (1st-2nd grades) – Children will explore the plants and animals living in the woods and investigate what these organisms need to survive. They also will learn how to protect the environment and learn what it means to be a friend of the forest. Hikes, games, stories, and crafts are all part of this session. Web of Life (3rd-4th grades) – Plants, animals, water, soil and sun – all these things are connected together in the great web of life. In this camp, the kids will learn how these elements interact with one another and how the web is maintained, affected or broken. Established in 1975 and is ACA accredited. Summer Camp: Daily swimming, arts and crafts, computers, sport, and dance/music. In the afternoon, campers have a variety of activities to choose from: private music lessons in piano, flute and percussion, Boy and Girl Scouts, band, chorus, handbells, dance, Tae Kwon Do, and drama. Extended day includes culinary creations, sports, arts and study hall. Soccer Clinic: During the morning hours, campers will work on ball skill activities and coordination. In the afternoon, they will participate in scrimmages. The 5-7 year old campers only have soccer clinic through lunch and then join their group in the Day Camp. Clinic includes lunch, snack and swimming. Specialty Camp: Fun and hands-on learning through theme-related actives. Each day involves a field trip and bus ride to and from campus, ending in a swim on campus. Field trips will include a boat tour on the Potomac, trips to Colonial Beach, Spy Museum, Port Discovery in Baltimore, and historical walking tours of Alexandria, Clifton, Georgetown, Leesburg, Fredericksburg, and Manassas. Summer Studies: enrichment or remedial programs in reading, literature, creative writing, language arts, math, and handwriting by degreed teachers. Campers are never taken for tutoring during specialist activities or swimming. Counselor in Training Program (8th-9th grades) – Students will assist counselors with their groups – organizing events throughout the camp. CIT program has 2-3 year apprenticeships leading to qualification as a junior counselor and includes outings such as swimming, canoe trips, camping, rock climbing and ropes course. Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies at Cooper’s Cove (8-15 years and adult): A wildlife sanctuary located near Capon Bridge, WV, about 2.5 hours from Washington, DC. Each day, exploration of the natural world is interwoven with games, song, stories, arts, hiking and swimming. Campers are introduced to plant, animal and earth science, and participate in overnight trips. Site includes a spacious main lodge with all-purpose room, hearth fireplace, dining porch, field study and work areas, infirmary, bookstore, darkroom, and library. 2006 theme – La Música de España y Portugal Olé Morning Program: Preschool and Kindergarten Campers – program is designed to engage young children in music and arts experiences that nurture musicality and creativity. Established in 1983, Special Love, based out of Winchester, Virginia, was created to let kids be kids. The organization provides fun and exciting events for kids with cancer year round. Camp Fantastic - this camp provides children with cancer an opportunity to step back from the seriousness of their disease and enjoy the bonds of friendship with other children who share similar experiences. The camp provides classes, recreation, theme parties, campfires for children who are currently being treated or have undergone treatment for cancer in the last three years. A full medical staff from NIH is on site. BRASS (Brothers and Sisters Shine) Camp and Weekend – a weekend or entire week for the siblings of kids with cancer that sometimes don’t get the usual attention because of their sibling’s illness – a chance to have a normal weekend of talent shows, water Olympics, horseback riding, canoeing, and soccer, as well as opportunities to speak with a counselor about the ordeal their family is facing. Established in 1998. Held at Wallops Flight Facility, an operational NASA installation located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. This camp is for children interested in learning about the science and engineering of rockets and space flight. Students will have the opportunity to do some of the things that astronauts do. They will launch a “Mission to Mars”, as well as build and launch their own model rockets. They will explore the world of robotics using the LEGO© MindStorm system as well as engineer a simulated rocket launch in a NASA mission control room. Students will tour the many departments at the Facility and Navy Aegis Training Center, NOAA Weather Command and Data Acquisition Center, NASA and Virginia Commercial Space Flight launch facilities. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Academy. NOTE: This camp is dependent on the support of the U.S. Navy and NASA facilities and personnel.
