1. Remove the pin andplace the legs into thejoint of the cargo areaside and the floor.

Troop SeatsIf the vehicle is a cargo/troop carrier, it may be equippedwith troop seats. They provide seating for up to eightpassengers in the cargo area. The seat bottoms can belowered individually for use or folded up to provide morecargo space. (The short box version has a one pieceseat bottom) The seat bottoms lock in both the up anddown positions.

When the seat is in the up position, the quick release pinwill go through the left-hand leg and the right-hand leg ofthe seats. It will then go through the seat channel, tosecure the seat bottom in the cargo or up position.

Troop Seat OperationA quick-release pin islocated on the left or rightside of the troop seat legimmediately under the hingepin.

CAUTION:A seat that is not locked into place properly canmove around in a collision or sudden stop. Thatcould cause injury to the person sitting there. Besure to lock the seat into place properly wheninstalling it.

Safety BeltsSafety Belts: They Are for Everyone

It is very important for rear passengers to have thesafety belt attached properly. The belt may help rearpassengers from being thrown out of the cargo areain a crash.

Whenever the troop seats are occupied, the safetybelt must be installed.

Secure the belt across the cargo storage area byattaching the two clips on the belt to the tie-downlocations on the seat backs at the rear of storagearea. Be sure that the latches are in the lockedposition. The latches are in the locked position whenthey are parallel to the front and back edge of thebelt clips.

2. Place the pin in the holeprovided under thehinge pin. The seat isnow locked in the downposition.

To return to the cargo or up position, reverse steps 1 and2.

This part of the manual tells you how to use the safetybelt properly.

Windows

Side Windows

The vehicle may have this feature, a fiberglass cap.The cap has dark tinted glass, swing open sidewindows and a swing open rear access door. Theside window handles and door handles have lockcylinders to secure them closed.

Manual Windows

Rear Doors

You will be able to open the side window by turningthe window handles (A) in a clockwise direction,which will allow you to lift the window with theassistance of the struts.

You will be able to open the access door by turningthe door handles (A) in a counterclockwise direction,which will allow you to lift the door with theassistance of the struts.

The diesel engine starts differently than a gasolineengine.

Refer to the 2006 Duramax Diesel Engine Owner’sManual Supplement, located in the glove compartment.

Do not use gasoline or starting “aids,” such as ether,in the air intake. They could damage the engine. Therecould also be a fire, which could cause seriouspersonal injury.

Starting and Operating YourVehicleStarting Your Vehicle

CAUTION:

Vehicle Load Disconnect SwitchThe vehicle is equipped with a load disconnectswitch, the switch disconnects 12-volt vehicle loadsand 24-volt trailer/aux loads that could cause aparasitic drain on the batteries.

Notice: If you will not be using your vehicle fora period of 48 hours or more, you will need toplace the switch in the OFF position toprevent the batteries from discharging. Continueddischarging could damage the batteries. Whenthis switch is in the OFF position the main batteryfeeds to the starter and NATO jump startconnector remain powered.

The load disconnect switch (A) is located under theaccessory panel.

The switch should be placed in the OFF position anytime the expected vehicle storage time is to exceed 48hours.

Accessory Power 24-Volt

Your vehicle may be equipped with a 24-voltAccessory Power circuit. The connector (A) is locatedin the engine compartment on the driver’s side rearcorner of the vehicle, under the fender support brace(B). The circuit is identified with a label stating 24VAUX. The circuit is protected by a 25 amp fuse. Theaccessory side of the connector is supplied, theterminal for that connector will be needed. Contactyour GM Goodwrench dealer for this part.®

Storage AreasCargo CoverThe vehicle may have this feature, a soft top cargocover. The cargo cover is made of a waterproof,welded, plastic coated polyester. For care andcleaning of the cargo cover, see Cargo Cover onpage 5-53 under Service and Appearance Care. Thecover must be fully installed and properly anchoredbefore traveling on the highway.

Notice: If you raise or lower the cargo cover whilethe vehicle is in motion, you could damage thecover or the cover components. The repair wouldnot be covered under your vehicle’s warranty.Always put the automatic transmission in PARK (P)and the transfer case in a drive gear and not inNEUTRAL before raising or lowering the cargocover.

The side panels and rear panel of the cargo covercan be rolled up. The cargo cover allows ventilationwithin the closed portion through opening ventslocated on the front and rear of the top.

4. Pull apart the velcro flaps on both side panels nearthe back of the vehicle.

5. Roll the side evenly upward, repeat for the otherside.

6. When the sides reach the top, they can be held inplace by inserting the cargo cover straps in the clipsat the top of the cargo cover.

Rolling Up the Side Panels:1. Release tension on the

hooks by pushing therelease on the front of thehook.

2. Remove the plastic hookfrom the bed fastener.

3. Pull apart the velcro flapson both side panels nearthe vehicle cab.

8. Release the four cornersupport straps.

10. Stack the bows on top of each other withoutstriking the cab or the troop seats (if equipped).Push down equally on both sides of the upper partof the front and rear bows.

11. Pull upward equally on both sides of the upper partof the center bow.

12. Standing at the rear of the vehicle, push the bowsforward.

Storing the Cargo Cover:

1. Release tension on the hooks by pushing therelease on the front of the hook.

2. Remove the plastic hook from the bed fastener.

3. Pull apart the velcro flaps on both side panels nearthe vehicle cab.

4. Pull apart the velcro flaps on both panels nearthe back of the vehicle.

5. Release the six cover straps, located inside thecargo box, that attach the cover to the cargo coverbows.

6. Remove the cover from the cargo cover bows.

7. Fold the cover neatly and store it behind the seat inthe truck cab.

9. Remove the six quickrelease pins from thesides of the cargo coverbows.

14. To reinstall the cargo cover, reverse Steps 1 through13.

Note: The cargo cover is marked with the word FRONTon the inside top to aid in proper positioning of the coveronto the vehicle.

13. Secure the bows in place with the front support straps.

Gun RackFloor Mount

The gun rack is designed for secure storage andeasy mounting and dismounting of the gun. The floormount gun rack is located behind the front seatsand will secure two guns.

If a gun is not properly stored, it could bethrown about the vehicle in a crash or suddenmaneuver. You and others in the vehiclecould be injured. When ever you store a gunin the vehicle, always be sure that it is storedsecurely in the proper location.

1. Insert the stock of thegun into the center of thelower mount. The lip ofthe lower mount mustbe fully around the stock.

Mounting the Gun

2. Place the barrel into the upper mount and push untilfully seated in the clamp.

3. Grasp and tug the gun up and down and side-to-side to ensure the gun is securely installed.

Cab Mount

If a gun is not properly stored, it could bethrown about the vehicle in a crash or suddenmaneuver. You and others in the vehiclecould be injured. When ever you store a gunin the vehicle, always be sure that it is storedsecurely in the proper location.

CAUTION:

The cab mounted gun racks are located at the rear ofthe cab and will secure one gun each.

Mounting the Gun

1. Place the stock of thegun into the center of thelower mount. The lip ofthe lower mount mustbe fully around the stock.

2. Place the barrel into theupper mount until fullyseated and secureusing the buckle andstrap.

3. Grasp and tug the gun up and down and side-to-side to ensure the gun is securely installed.

Pioneer Tool Kit

Improperly stored Pioneer Tool Kit could bethrown about the vehicle during a collision orsudden maneuver. You or others could beinjured. If you remove the tool kit, always store itin the proper storage location. When you put itback, always be sure that is securely reattachedin the mounting brackets.

CAUTION:

The Pioneer Tool Kit is a multi-purpose tool. Itincorporates seven basic hand tools into onecompact unit based on a Hudson Bay-style axe witha 36 inch handle. All of the attachments are storedin the carrying case (A) that slides onto the handlefor storage. The entire unit is mounted in bracketslocated on the interior rear cab wall. Remove bypulling out the hitch pin (B) from the axe and liftingand sliding it off the brackets. When you are finishedusing the tool kit, install all tools into the storagebag. Slide the bag onto the handle, install the axeinto the storage brackets, and install the hitch pin.For additional information on the usage of this toolrefer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The main components of your instrument panel arethe following:

Note: Before operating the vehicle, visually inspectthe exterior lighting to ensure that all lights are

operating correctly in blackout and non-blackoutmodes. Ensure that lights and reflectors are notobscured by dirt or have broken lenses.

The blackout driving light is mounted on the frontbumper grille guard on the left side of the vehicle.The blackout marker lamps are located on the frontleft and right sides of the vehicle. The blackoutstoplights are on the rear left and right sides of thevehicle. The military blackout lighting provides astealthy low illumination to standard lighting systems.

Within the rear marker lamps are separate colormarkers. Yellow will illuminate for the brakes andred will illuminate for the drive mode. The frontmarkers illuminate yellow.

Service Lights/Blackout ControlNotice: If the vehicle is not going to be driven for24 hours or more, the service lights switch mustbe placed in the “ALL OFF” position. This will helpprevent the batteries from discharging. Continueddischarging could damage the batteries. Beforenormal driving operations, turn on service lights toensure headlights, brake lights and turn signalsare operational.

The switch located on the left side of the accessorypanel is the service lights/blackout control.

With the ignition switch in the ON Position:

• Pull the switch outward then push upward to theservice ON position. All normal service lampswill be operational with normal controls.

• Move the service lights/blackout switch to thecenter ALL OFF position. All lamps and accessorypower to the vehicle will turn off.

• Move the switch to the blackout position, thefollowing will occur:

The blackout lighting system will be operative.

The front and rear blackout marker lamps will illuminate.

The blackout stoplamps will illuminate when the brakes are applied.

The instrument panel warning lights will remain functional.

The hazard lights will remain functional.

The horn will not be functional.

The vehicle’s military 12-pin trailer wiring connectorand trailer lamps are also controlled by this switch.

Blackout Drive Light Control

The switch located on the blackout switch panel next tothe service light switch is the blackout drive light control.

The service lights/blackout control switch must be inblackout position or in the down position for the blackoutdrive lights to function.

With the ignition switch in the ON position:

• Pull the switch outward then up to the ONposition, the front blackout drive lamp willactivate.

• Pull the switch outward then down to the OFFposition, the blackout drive lamp will deactivate.

• The switch will return to the center positionautomatically after you release it from either theON or OFF position.

The bed mounted 3-way switch (A) is located in theleft rear of the cargo bed.

Interior LampsTopper Dome LampIf the vehicle has this feature, a fiberglass cap, it willinclude a white interior illumination lamp. The lampis located in the top center of the rear panel, abovethe cap rear door. Switches located in the cab andcargo area of the vehicle control the lamp. The lampwill not function when the vehicle is in blackoutmode.

The interior 3-way switch (A) is located on theaccessory panel.

The lamp mounted override switch (A) is located onthe rear center of the topper roof. If the overrideswitch is turned OFF the following will occur:

• The interior mounted 3-way switch will notfunction.

• The bed mounted 3-way switch will not function.

The dome lamp will not function in the blackoutmode.

Warning Lights, Gages andIndicatorsThis part describes the 24-voltmeter gage on yourvehicle.

This gage can signal that something is wrong beforeit becomes serious enough to cause an expensiverepair or replacement.

Gages can indicate when there may be or is aproblem with one of your vehicle’s functions. Oftengages and warning lights work together to let youknow when there is a problem with your vehicle.

24-Voltmeter Gage

Readings in either red warning zone indicate apossible problem in the electrical system. When theengine is not running, but the ignition is in RUN, thisgage shows the 24-volt battery’s state of charge.When the engine is running, the gage shows thecondition of the 24-volt charging system. Readings inthe low warning zone may occur when a largenumber of electrical accessories are operating in thevehicle and the engine is left at an idle for anextended period. This condition is normal since the

Engine Running

The gage needle should be in the green band whenengine speed is above an idle. If the needle is not inthe green band, the fuse element may have melted. Ifthe fuse is not blown and the system still does not

In a no load situation, with the engine off, the gageneedle should be mid-way between the red band andgreen band, in the yellow band. If the gage needle isin the lower end of the yellow band, this isunacceptable, and the 24-volt battery may have rundown.

charging system may not be able to provide fullpower at engine idle. As engine speeds areincreased, this condition should correct itselfbecause higher engine speeds allow the chargingsystem to create maximum power. The 24-voltmetergage is located in the lower right side of theaccessory panel. The voltmeter is located in theinstrument panel next to the service and blackoutlighting switch.

Air Filter Restriction Indicator

If the vehicle has this feature, a gage will be locatedon the accessory panel. It monitors the engine airfilter. As the filter gets dirty, the yellow indicator willbegin to rise. When it reaches the top of the scale,the filter should be replaced. After replacing the filter,reset the gage by pressing in the yellow reset button(A) at the bottom of the gage.

Tire Pressure Monitor Display

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system uses radioand sensor technology to check tire pressure levelsand temperature. If the vehicle has this feature,sensors are mounted on each tire and wheelassembly, except the spare tire. The TPM sensorstransmit tire pressure and temperature readings to areceiver located in the vehicle. The TPM display islocated on the lower driver side of the windshieldmolding. For additional information and details aboutthe TPM operation and displays see Tire PressureMonitor System on page 5-34.

Loading the Vehicle

CAUTION:Do not load the vehicle any heavier than the GVWR,or either the maximum front or rear GAWR. If youdo, parts on the vehicle can break, or it can changethe way the vehicle handles. These could causeyou to lose control. Also, overloading can shortenthe life of the vehicle.

Your Driving, the Road and theVehicle

It is very important to know how much weight yourvehicle can carry. This weight is called the vehiclecapacity weight and includes the weight of alloccupants, cargo and all military-installed options.The GVWR includes the weight of the vehicle, alloccupants, fuel and cargo. Three labels on yourvehicle show how much weight it was designed tocarry and other information important to the vehicle,the Vehicle Identification label, Shipping Data Platelabel and the Certification/Tire label. These labelsare located on the driver’s door.

Notice: Overloading your vehicle may causedamage. Repairs would not be covered by yourwarranty. Do not overload your vehicle.

Be sure to spread out your load equally on bothsides of the center line. Refer to Loading YourVehicle and Off-Road Driving in the 2006 VehicleOwner Manual for more information on vehicleloading.

Shipping Data Label

A vehicle specific shipping data label is found on thedriver’s inner door panel above the vehicleidentification plate. This label includes the vehicleloading curb and gross vehicle weight (GVW) (B) and

vehicle dimensions (A). For actual vehiclespecifications refer to label on vehicle. The curbweight is the vehicle weight without cargo oroccupants. The GVW is the total weight of theloaded vehicle. Never exceed the weights for yourvehicle.

Vehicle Identification Label

A vehicle specific vehicle identification label is foundon the driver’s inner door panel under the shippingdata plate. This plate includes the make and model(A), manufacturer’s VIN number (B), curb weight (C),maximum payload (D), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) (E), and Gross Combined Weight Rating(GCWR) (F). For actual vehicle specifications referto label on vehicle.

The curb weight is the vehicle weight without cargoor occupants. The maximum payload is themaximum allowable weight of cargo and occupantsthe vehicle is designed to carry. The GVWR includesthe weight of the vehicle, all occupants, fuel andcargo. The GCWR is the total weight of the vehicle,all occupants, fuel, cargo and trailer. Never exceedthe weights for your vehicle.

Front Mounted ReceiverThe vehicle may feature a front mounted receiver.You can use the receiver with a power winchplatform or with other accessories. Never use thefront mounted receiver to tow a trailer. Never use thefront mounted receiver without the receiver extension.

The front receiver (B) is located under the frontbumper. There is a winch power disconnect (A)located on the bumper near the receiver.

Connect the winch to the platform. Connect thewiring to the winch disconnect following themanufacturer’s guidelines.

If you are using a winch to pull out another vehicle,follow the winch manufacturer’s guidelines andobserve the following to prevent damage to yourvehicle:

• If possible, have your vehicle anchored from the opposite side of the winch to a solid, immovable object. When winching from the front, use both of the rear recovery loops.

• Put your transmission in NEUTRAL (N).• Use your regular brakes to hold your vehicle in place and block the wheels to keep the vehicle from moving.

Notice: Using a power winch with the transmissionin gear to pull out another vehicle may damagethe transmission. When operating a power winch,always leave the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).

If you are using a winch to pull out your own vehicle,follow the winch manufacturer’s guidelines for selfrecovery and observe the following to preventdamage to your vehicle:

• Do not self recover your vehicle by wrapping the winch cable around an object (such as pulley block or tree) and attaching it back to your vehicle’s recovery loops.• Always attach the winch cable directly to a solid anchor directly in front of your vehicle to achieve a straight line pull.

Recovery LoopsFront of the Vehicle

Rear of the VehicleThe vehicle is equippedwith two loops on the frontand back ends of thevehicle. You may need touse them if you are stuckoff-road and need to bepulled out to some placewhere you can continuedriving. The loops meetMIL-STD-209J for the tie-down specifications andnot for vehicle lifting.

These loops, when used, are under a lot offorce. Keep people away from the vicinity ofthe loops and any chains or cables during use.Always pull the vehicle straight out. Never pullon the loops at a sideways angle. The loopscould break off and you or others could beinjured from the chain or cable snapping back.

Underbody ProtectionThe vehicle may have this feature. To protect theunderside of the vehicle, multiple skid plates havebeen installed. The skid plates ensure that anoptimal amount of the vehicle’s underside isprotected from damage, but a smooth undersidealso assists your vehicle in sliding over obstacles itmight otherwise hang up on. When in place, themultiple skid plates allow full access to maintenanceitems.

Notice: Never use the recovery loops to tow thevehicle. Your vehicle could be damaged and itwould not be covered by warranty.

When recovering the vehicle, you should determinethe direction of the recovery by the distance requiredto free the vehicle from the surrounding terrain.Secure the towing cable to both front or rear loopswith a V-device to gain an even pull on both anchorpoints and avoid damage to the vehicle.

Enhanced Suspension SystemThe vehicle may have this feature. The enhancedsuspension system is found on vehicles with optionpackage (EMP). The enhanced suspension providessupplemental suspension modifications speciallyengineered for severe service on and off road. Thesystem is comprised of a series of four speciallydesigned and critically damped hydro/pneumaticjounce shocks in parallel with the vehicle’s primarysuspension for increased energy dissipation andgreatly enhanced all terrain capability. The front andrear suspension is equipped with this feature. Thefront factory jounce bumper has been modified towork with this system. This system requires nomaintenance or adjustments.

When towing the vehicle, you should always use aproperly equipped wrecker/recovery vehicle. Refer toTowing Your Vehicle and Recreational Towing in theindex of the 2006 Vehicle Owners Manual for furtherinformation on towing the vehicle.

Towing Your Vehicle

Trailer Connections

The NATO standard 12-pin trailer connector (A) islocated on the rear bumper between the driver’s siderecovery loop and the pintle hitch. When connectinga trailer wiring harness connector to the connector,make sure the dog ears of the trailer connector areproperly aligned when inserting it into the connector.

Pintle HitchThe pintle hitch is a dual purpose hitch. It can towtrailers with either a lunnette eye or a standardcoupler. The pintle upper jaw closes onto the top ofthe ball to allow for towing trailers with lunnette eye.The upper jaw locks into up or open position forstandard coupler towing.

The pintle hitch is located at the rear of the vehicle,and is removable.

Do not use the pintle hitch if it is worn,damaged or missing parts. An improperlyworking hitch would cause the trailer todisengage from the vehicle and cause you canlose control of the trailer. You and others couldbe seriously injured. Inspect the hitch beforeusing to ensure it is in proper working condition.

Installing the Pintle Hitch:1. Install the receiver extension (B).

2. Push the pintle hitch (A) into the receiver extension.

3. Install the retaining pin (E) into the receiver extension and the pintle hitch (A).

4. Install the spring clip (C) into the retaining pin (E).

Operating the Pintle Hitch:To Open:

1. Open the latch by removing latch pin (D).

2. Pull up on the lock latch (F) while lifting the latch (G).

To Close:

1. Push the latch (G) until the lock latch (F) locks in place.

2. Install the latch pin (D).

Battery

Batteries have acid that can burn you and gas thatcan explode. You an be badly hurt if you are not careful.See Jump Starting (12V System) on page 5-5 for tipson working around a battery without getting hurt.

CAUTION:

Vehicle StorageThe vehicle may be equipped with deep cyclemaintenance free batteries. When it is time for anew battery, get one that has the replacementnumber shown on the original battery’s label. Werecommend an Optima replacement battery. SeeEngine Compartment Overview on page 5-4 forbattery location.

Warning: Battery posts, terminals and relatedaccessories contain lead and lead compounds,chemicals known to the State of California to causecancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands afterhandling.

Note: There is also a 12-volt battery located onthe frame under the vehicle on the passenger side.

If you are not going to drive your vehicle for 48 hoursor more, place the vehicle load disconnect switch inthe OFF position. See Vehicle Load DisconnectSwitch on page 2-3. This will help keep yourbatteries from running down.

Jump Starting (12V System)If the battery (or batteries) on the vehicle have rundown and the vehicle will not start, you may want touse another vehicle to provide power to start thevehicle.

Heavy duty jumper cables can be used to jump startthe 12-volt system.

1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt battery with a negative ground.

Getting between vehicles that are being jumpstarted is dangerous. If the vehicles were tomove you could be seriously injured or killed.Do not stand in front of the vehicle being jumpstarted. Never jump start frozen batteries theycan explode. You or others can be could beseriously injured. Allow the battery to thaw atroom temperature before jump starting.

CAUTION:Notice: Ignoring these steps could result in costlydamage to the vehicle that would not be covered by thevehicle warranty. Trying to start the vehicle by pushingor pulling it will not work, and it could damage the vehicle.

2. Get the vehicles close enough so that jumpercables can reach, but be sure the vehicles arenot touching each other. If they are, it could causea ground causing the vehicle not to start. The badgrounding could damage the electrical systems.

To avoid the possibility of the vehicles rolling, setthe parking brake firmly on both vehicles involvedin the jump start procedure. Put the automatictransmission in PARK (P). Be sure the transfercase is in a drive gear and is NOT in NEUTRAL(N).

Batteries can hurt you. They can be dangerousbecause:• They contain acid that can burn you.• They contain gas that can explode or ignite.• They contain enough electricity to burn you.If you do not follow these steps exactly, someor all of these things can hurt you.

Notice: If you leave the communications/navigationequipment or other accessories on during jumpstarting procedure, they could be damaged. Therepairs wouldn’t be covered by the warranty.Always turn off your communications/navigationequipment or other accessories when jump startingyour vehicle.

3. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles. Unplugunnecessary accessories plugged into thecigarette lighter or accessory power outlets. Turnoff all lamps that are not required as well asradios. This will avoid sparks and help save bothbatteries. In addition, it could save the radio!

4. Ensure the jumper cables do not have loose ormissing insulation. If they do, you could getshocked and the vehicle could be damaged.

Before you connect the cables, here are somebasic things you should know. Positive (+) will goto positive (+). Negative (-) will go to a heavy,unpainted metal engine part or a remote negative(-) terminal. The remote negative terminal islocated on the engine drive bracket and is markedGND (ground).

5. Open the hood and locate the battery. Find thepositive (+) and negative (-) terminals on eachbattery.

CAUTION:

Using an open flame near a battery can causebattery gas to explode. People have been hurtdoing this, and some have been blinded. Use aflashlight if you need more light. Be sure thebatteries have enough water. You don’t need toadd water to the Optima battery (or batteries)installed in every new Military vehicle. But if abattery has filler caps, be sure the rightamount of fluid is there. If it is low, add waterto take care of that first. If you do not,explosive gas could be present. Battery fluidcontains acid that can burn you. Do not get iton you. If you accidentally get it in the eyes oron the skin, flush the place with water and getmedical help immediately.

CAUTION:Fans or other moving engine parts can injure youbadly. Keep your hands away from moving partonce the engine is running.

Do not let the other end touch anything until the next step.The other end of the negative (-) cable does not go to thedead battery. It goes to a heavy unpainted metal part of theengine in the vehicle with the dead battery.

6. Connect the positive (+)cable to the positive (+)terminal of the 12-voltbattery (12-volt side) ofthe vehicle with the deadbattery.

7. Connect the positive (+)cable to the positive (+)terminal 12-volt systemof the vehicle with thegood battery.

8. Connect the negative(-) cable to the negative(-) terminal of the12-volt system of thevehicle with the goodbattery.

9. Connect the other endof the negative (-) cableto the remote negative(-) terminal, markedGND, on the vehiclewith the dead battery.

The electrical connection is just as good there, butthe chance of sparks getting back to the batteryis much less.

10. Start the vehicle with the good battery. Allow thevehicle’s battery to charge for 10 minutes beforeattempting to start the vehicle.

Note: It may take up to 30 minutes to charge thebattery enough to start the vehicle, depending onthe battery’s state of charge.

11. Start the vehicle with the dead battery.

Notice: If the jumper cables are connected orremoved in the wrong order, electrical shortingmay occur and damage the vehicle. The repairswould not be covered by your warranty. Alwaysconnect and remove the jumper cables in thecorrect order, making sure that the cables do nottouch each other or other metal.

12. Remove the cables in reverse order to preventelectrical shorting. Take care that they do nottouch each other or any other metal.

If this procedure does not work, you will need todisconnect the 24-volt side battery and charge it alonefor 10 minutes. Replace the battery and repeat the jumpstarting procedures as outlined.

Note: This procedure should only be performed byauthorized personnel.

Jumper Cable Removal

To disconnect the jumper cables from both vehiclesdo the following:

1. Disconnect the black negative (–) cable from the vehicle that had the bad battery, or remove the negative terminal.2. Disconnect the black negative (–) cable from the vehicle with the good battery.

You should only use the NATO slave receptacle andslave cable when performing this operation.

1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 24-voltbattery with a negative ground.

2. Get the vehicles close enough so that the slavecable can reach, but be sure the vehicles are nottouching each other. If they are, it could cause aground connection causing the vehicle not to start,and the bad grounding could damage theelectrical systems.

Batteries can hurt you. They can be dangerousbecause:

• They contain acid that can burn you.• They contain gas that can explode or ignite.• They contain enough electricity to burn you.

If you do not follow these steps exactly, some or allof these things can hurt you.

CAUTION:

Slave Starting(24V NATO Connector)If the battery (or batteries) on the vehicle have rundown and the vehicle will not start, you may want touse another vehicle to provide power to start thevehicle.NATO slave cables are the only recommendedmethod for 24-volt jump starting of the vehicle. Youshould only use NATO slave cables to jump startsimilar vehicles.

Notice: Ignoring these steps could result in costlydamage to the vehicle that wouldn’t be covered by thevehicle warranty.Trying to start the vehicle by pushing or pulling it will notwork, and it could damage the vehicle.

3. Disconnect the red positive (+) cable from the vehicle with the good battery.4. Disconnect the red positive (+) cable from the other vehicle.5. Return the remote positive (+) terminal cover, if equipped, to its original position.

The wiring circuits in your vehicle are protected fromshort circuits by a combination of fuses, circuitbreakers and fusible thermal links. This greatlyreduces the chance of fires caused by electricalproblems.

Be sure you replace a bad fuse with a new one ofthe identical size and rating.

If you ever have a problem on the road and do nothave a spare fuse, you can borrow one that has thesame amperage. Just pick some feature of yourvehicle that you can get along without — like theradio or cigarette lighter — and use its fuse, if it isthe correct amperage. Replace it as soon as youcan.

The 24-volt fuses are located in the enginecompartment taped to the 24-volt generator wiringharness. These fuses are for the 24-voltmeter gagefuse (5 amp), 24-volt trailer fuse (25 amp) and 24-volt accessory power circuit (25 amp). Your vehiclealso has a special relay center for the blackoutlighting. The relay center is located on the

9. Start the vehicle with the dead battery.

Note: Use twisting motion when disconnecting theslave cable from the receptacle. Forcefully pulling thecable from the receptacle may cause damage to thereceptacle mount.

10. Remove the slave cable in the reverse order thatit was installed. Take care not to let the cableends touch each other or any other metal.

11. Install the covers on both vehicles and fully tighten to ensure a proper seal.

12. Clean and stow the slave cable.

Tire Pressure Monitoring SystemNotice: Do not use a tire sealant if your vehiclehas Tire Pressure Monitors. The liquid sealantcan damage the tire pressure monitor sensors.

Beadlock Wheels

If the vehicle has this feature, a Tire PressureMonitoring (TPM) system, this system is a sensingdevice designed to identify and display tire operatingdata and activate an alert or warning when tirepressure or temperature irregularities are detected.

Traction systems used on a vehicle withoutthe proper amount of clearance can causedamage to the brakes, suspension or othervehicle parts. The area damaged by the tractiondevice could cause you to lose control of yourvehicle and you or others may be injured in acrash. Beadlock wheels or vehicles with militaryoption code EMP should not be used with tirechains or other similar belt or strap tractionsystem. There is not enough clearance.

CAUTION:

If the vehicle features Option Package EMP(Enhanced Mobility Package), it will feature specialrubber beadlocks, made exclusively for use on multi-piece wheels. This device fits securely between the

tire beads and positively locks the tire to the wheelrim flange. Beadlocks allow vehicle operation at thelow tire air pressure conditions required for bettermobility in mud, sand and snow.

By reducing the air pressure, the tire footprint isincreased significantly, thus allowing a greater areaof traction or contact. The beadlock also performs asa safety device to ensure that the tire does not“unseat” from the rim or rotate on the wheel at theselow air pressure settings, while also preventing theentry of foreign objects, debris or water into the tire’sair chamber. Replace with the same type, style orsize as originally equipped or the beadlock wheelsmay not function properly. For tire pressures see theTire Pressure Chart in Capacities and Specificationson page 5-51.

Removing the Spare Tire andToolsPickup VehiclesUnder Body Carrier

The heavy duty bumper of the vehicle has anopening in the bumper to gain access to the sparetire hoist. This opening is located behind the licenseplate mount. In order to gain access to this openingyou must lower the license plate. To lower the plateyou must remove the pin (B). Rotate the plate (A)down enough to access the opening. For moreinformation, refer to Changing a Flat Tire andRemoving the Spare Tire and Tools in the 2006Vehicle Owner Manual.

Cargo Bed Carrier

The cargo bed tire carrier is located in thepassenger front of the cargo bed. To remove the tire,use and turn the wheel wrench counterclockwise andremove the wheel nuts (A).

Swing Away Carrier

The swing away tire carrier is located at the rear ofthe vehicle attached to the bumper. To remove thetire, use and turn the wheel wrench counterclockwiseand remove the wheel nuts (A).

If you drive with the spare tire carrierunlatched, you could injure pedestrians ordamage the vehicle. Make sure the carrier issecure before driving.

CAUTION:

1. Press the button on the pin (B), which is attached to the cable (A), to remove the pin from the latch bolt nut (C).

2. Lift up on the latch on the left side of the vehicle to release the spare tire carrier from the vehicle. The handle will stay in the raised position until

the spare tire carrier is closed and latched properly.

3. Swing the spare tire carrier to the side.

The spare tire carrier must be secured so thatit does not strike and injure someone. Alwaysclose it into the latch forcefully. Make sure thatthe release handle is fully closed (down) andthat the cable is attached.

CAUTION:

1. Move the spare tire carrier back into place until it latches, by closing it into the latch forcefully. The spare tire carrier is latched properly when the latch handle has lowered to the closed position.

2. Reinstall the cable (B) by pushing in the button on the pin (A) and inserting the pin into the latch bolt nut.

3. Pull on the spare tire carrier to make sure it is firmly latched.

In Vehicle Carrier

To close the swing away tire carrier, do the following:

11. Remove all of the wheel nuts and take off the flat tire.

12. Remove any rust or dirtfrom the wheel bolts,mounting surfaces andspare wheel.

Rust or dirt on the wheel, or on the parts towhich it is fastened, can make the wheel nutsbecome loose after a time. The wheel couldcome off and cause an accident. When youchange a wheel, remove any rust or dirt fromthe places where the wheel attaches to thevehicle. In an emergency, you can use a clothor a paper towel to do this; but be sure touse a scraper or wire brush later, if needed,to get all the rust or dirt off.

13. After mounting the spare, put the wheel nuts back on with the rounded end of the nuts toward the wheel. Tighten each wheel nut by hand. Then use the wheel wrench to tighten the nuts until the wheel is held against the hub.

14. Turn the wheel wrench counterclockwise to lower the vehicle and remove the jack.

Incorrect wheel nuts or improperly tightenedwheel nuts can cause the wheel to come looseand even come off. This could lead to anaccident. Be sure to use the correct wheelnuts. If you have to replace them, be sure toget new GM original equipment wheel nuts.Stop somewhere as soon as you can and havethe nuts tightened with a torque wrench to theproper torque specification. See Capacitiesand Specifications on page 5-51 for wheel nuttorque specification.

CAUTION:

Notice: Improperly tightened wheel nuts can leadto brake pulsation and rotor damage. To avoidexpensive brake repairs, evenly tighten the wheelnuts in the proper sequence and to the propertorque specification. See Capacities andSpecifications on page 5-51 for the wheel nuttorque specification.

Getting under a vehicle when it is jacked up isdangerous. If the vehicle slips off the jack youcould be badly injured or killed. Never get undera vehicle when it is supported only by a jack.

CAUTION:

Raising your vehicle with the jack improperlypositioned can damage the vehicle and evenmake the vehicle fall. To help avoid personalinjury and vehicle damage, be sure to fit thejack lift head into the proper location beforeraising the vehicle.

Tire Pressure Monitor System GageWarning and DisplaysThe Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system gage willbe located on the lower left driver side of windshieldmolding. The TPM system gage can displayinformation such as the tire pressure, tiretemperature and warning/alert messages.

A (Programmed Wheel Position): This message willalert the user of which wheel is being programmedand if the system is receiving data from that location.This is also referred to as the Tire Icon.

B (Alarm Indicator Lamp): This will change color ofthe gage backlighting if a wheel problem is detected.

C (Low Pressure Indicator): This message willdisplay to indicate a low wheel pressure condition.

D (Alert Indicator): This message will display toalert the user of a problem. When the alert occurs,stop and check your tire as soon as possible.

E (Learn Mode): This message will display toindicate the system is in a programming mode forremoving or adding wheel sensors.

F (Towing Vehicle Indicator): This message willdisplay to indicate that a towed vehicle data hasbeen received.

G (Numerical Display): The display will indicate thepressure or temperature of the wheel indicated.

H (Units of Pressure or Temperature): Thismessage will indicate which unit of measurementhas been selected for the numerical display.

I (Programming Mode): This message will displaythat the system is in a programming mode.

Notice: Driving when a TPM system alert orwarning condition is detected, may cause tiredamage. This damage would not be covered bythe vehicle warranty. Reduce vehicle speed to anappropriate safe level and proceed to a safestopping location or facility where the tire can beinspected and serviced.

Gage FunctionWhen power is applied to the receiver, the gagedisplay momentarily turns on all icons, beeps, andthe gage backlight blinks once. The unit then goesinto standby mode waiting for data from the wheeltransmitters.

Note: Until the vehicle is in motion no data will bereceived from any installed transmitter. The displaywill remain blank.

J (Cold Pressure Indicator): This message willindicate that the numerical display is cold tirepressure.

K (Tire Rotation Program): Press this button afterthe tires have been rotated and the new positionneeds to be updated.

Tire Pressure Monitor SystemSwitch Panel

The switch panel is located on the instrument panelnext to the steering column. The switch panel’sfunction is to program or select certain functions ofthe system.

The gage display has anenergy saving feature thatturns lights on to fullintensity or active stageonly when required todisplay alert conditions orprogram the unit. The gageautomatically switches tolow power stage when nocontrol activity is detected.

The respective tire icon is filled in as soon as data fromits transmitter is received. The windshield/louver is shownfor any towing vehicle transmitter. After data from alltransmitters is received the display will be in the stateshown or normal mode until an alert or warning conditionis detected.

Data from a towed vehicleor trailer (if equipped withsensors) is indicated bytire icons with nowindshield/louver icon.

1. Press the TIRE button to scroll through the tires.

2. Press the MODE button to scroll through the pressure, temperature, and pressure deviation readings for a selected tire.

Checking Tire Conditions

The system will alternateviews between the towingand towed vehicle whenoperating with thisconfiguration.

The Pressure Deviation Alert is initiated when themeasured tire pressure deviates from the requiredpressure by more than the preset level.

The gage light will change colors and the alertindicator flashes on and off. The audible alarmsounds once and the digital readout displays theamount of deviation from required pressure. Pressany button to acknowledge the alert and stop theflashing. The gage light will remain on and thesystem returns to normal mode.

Example:Pressure Deviation Alert Level = ±5 PSI (0.34 Bar)Required Pressure = 35 PSI (2.40 Bar)Actual Pressure in a wheel drops to 30 PSI (2 Bar)Pressure Deviation reading as shown will be -5 PSI(0.34 Bar). You should stop and check your tires assoon as possible. The Pressure Deviation Alert iscancelled when the tires are properly re-inflated tocorrect levels. See Capacities and Specifications onpage 5-51 for Tire Pressure Monitoring SystemSetting Chart.

The High Temperature Alertis initiated when the airtemperature within a tireexceeds the programmedlevel. The temperature alertindicator and audible alarmturn on and offcontinuously.

Error CodeAn E1 error code may be displayed if the vehicle isnot in motion for 15 minutes or longer with the keyin the ON position. If after 5 minutes of driving 6mph (10 kph) or greater the code is still present,contact your GM Goodwrench dealer.

The gage light, low-pressure warning indicator andthe audible alarm turn on and off continuously. Pressany button to acknowledge and stop the flashing.The gage light remains on and the display reverts toa normal mode. The Low Pressure Alert is cancelledwhen the tires are properly re-inflated to correctlevels. See Capacities and Specifications on page 5-51 for Tire Pressure Monitoring System SettingChart. The Pressure Low Alert is cancelled when thetires are properly re-inflated to correct levels.

A Low Pressure Warning isinitiated when the pressuredrops below theprogrammed level.

Low Pressure Warning

Press any button to acknowledge the alert and stopthe flashing. The gage light remains on and thedisplay reverts to a normal mode. 2. To enter this function press the MODE button untilthe flat tire icon and pressure units are displayed.

3. Press the TIRE button to scroll to the desired axle. The tires of the selected axle are filled in.

4. Press the MODE button to view the current value.

5. Press the TIRE button to increase the value.

6. Press the MODE button to decrease the value.

7. Press the SET button to save when the desired value is reached.

Pressure Deviation AlertThis function sets the pressure deviation alertthreshold for all tires. Factory default setting is 5 PSI(0.34 Bar).

To Program

5. Press the MODE button to decrease the value.

6. To disable this feature press the MODE button until the display shows OFF.

7. Press the SET button to save when the desired value is reached.

Temperature Compensated PressureWhen a tire heats up, the air pressure inside the tire canalso be expected to increase. For example, a normal or“required” pressure at 64°F (18°C) may be 34 PSI or(2.34 Bar) and a normal pressure at 120°F (49°C) maybe 39 PSI (2.70 Bar). Both pressure readings are correctat their respective temperatures.

The amount of deviation from the required pressure atany temperature can be read by using the PressureDeviation mode of this system. If at any time you areuncertain that the Actual Pressure reading on the gagedisplay indicates the correct tire pressure, switch to thePressure Deviation (+) readout. A blank display indicatesthat the reading on the display is the correct one. Any (+)or (-) value indicates the tire pressure is incorrect by thatvalue. This value can then be used to correctly inflate thetire.

High Temperature AlertThis function changes the high-temperature alertthreshold. Factory default setting is 176°F (80°C).

To Program

1. Enter Level 1 Programming Mode see Entering Programming Mode.

2. To enter this function press the MODE button until the alert icon and temperature units are displayed.

3. Press the TIRE button to enter and display the current value of High Temperature Alert.

4. Press the TIRE button to increase the value.

5. Press the MODE button to decrease the value.

Measurement Selection-Metric or Imperial

Use this mode to select the combination of pressureand temperature units. Unit combinations are PSI -°F,Bar -°F, Bar -°C, PSI -°C.

2. To enter this function press the MODE button until the pressure and temperature units are displayed. (PSI/Bar, °C/°F).

3. Press the TIRE button to enter.

4. Use the TIRE or MODE button to scroll through thefour combinations of unit settings.

5. When the desired combination is displayed press the SET button to save and exit this mode.

6. Press the SET button again to revert to normal mode.

Tire Rotation Mode

This function is used after tires are rotated and the newpositions need to be updated. This procedure is valid forfour tire locations only.

To Program1. Enter Level 1 Program- ming Mode, see Entering Programming Mode.

2. To enter this function press the MODE button until the tire rotation icon is displayed.

8. Press the SET again to revert to normal mode.

6. To disable this featurepress the MODE buttonuntil the display readsOFF.

If more than one tire location contains the samesensor number, the display will prompt an errorwith the conflicting tires filled in and the associatedsensor number. Press any button to return the tireselection menu and make necessary corrections.

8. Press SET button again to revert to normal mode.

Note: This display indicates that ID 1 is programmedin two locations causing the error.

3. Press the TIRE button to scroll to a tire position.

4. Press the MODE button to select it for editing.

Note: The current tire position number will be dis-played.

5. Use the TIRE or MODE button to adjust the valueto the number determined in step 6.

6. Press the SET button when the numberrepresenting the desired sensor is achieved. Thisreturns the display to the tire selection menu.Scroll to a different tire location and edit the sensornumbers as above.

7. Press SET button to save and exit this mode.

Advanced Programming-Level 2Slope Mode SLSee the Tire Pressure Monitoring System Setting Charton page 5-52 for setting value specifications.

The Slope is a value corresponding to the rate ofpressure change due to temperature for a particular tire.This value affects the calculation to determine pressuredeviation value. The factory default setting is 44.

To Program1. Enter Level 2 Program

ming Mode, seeEntering ProgrammingMode.

2. Press the TIRE button to scroll to the desired axle, the tires of the selected axle are filled in.

3. Press the MODE button to display the current value of slope for the selected axle.

4. Press the TIRE button to increase the value.

5. Press the MODE button to decrease the value. The minimum value is 10 and the maximum is 160.

6. Press the SET button to save the value.

Repeat steps 2-6 until the slope level is set for allaxles as desired.

7. Press the SET button to exit.

8. Press the SET again to revert to normal mode.

This method must be carried out while the transmittersare in “gage fill” mode. This mode is entered for 15minutes after the vehicle has been driven above 6 mph(10 kph). Each transmitter “learn operation” must becarried out at least 90 seconds apart. If it is not possibleto complete the learn operation for all transmitters within15 minutes, the vehicle must again be driven above 6mph (10 kph) and then the process can be continued.

Note: To prevent the last identification from being erased,scroll to the next tire position before driving. A beep andrapid flashing of the gage light indicate a transmissionwas received. The new ID is stored.

6. To remove the transmit ter from the selected tire location, press the MODE button.

7. Press the TIRE button to scroll to another position and repeat step 4 or 5 as required.

8. Press the SET button to save and exit.If no error is found, the system will reset and go tonormal mode.

Learn ModeThis mode is used to add or remove transmitters fromthe system.

To Program1. Enter Level 2 Program-

ming Mode, seeEntering ProgrammingMode.

3. Press the TIRE button to display the ten possible wheel positions for the towing vehicle. The

currently installed transmitter positions are nowindicated with a filled in tire indicator.

4. Use the TIRE button to scroll to the desired position. The outline of the wheel position to be programmed will flash.

5. A new transmitter identification can be learned byinflating or deflating the tire by more than 3 PSI(0.20 Bar).

2. Press the MODE button to select the learn mode icon.

Note: The bulbs in the blackout tail/stoplamp and frontmarker lamps are light emitting diodes (LED) instead ofincandescent bulbs. They are not replaceable and areserviced as an assembly. For bulb replacement refer tothe 2006 LSSV Military Trucks Service ManualSupplement.

Marker Lamps (Blackout)

2. Remove the lens cover from the lamp.

3. Press in on the bulb and turn counterclockwise.

4. Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

5. Put the new bulb into the socket and press in and turn clockwise.

6. Install the rubber lens gasket into the lamp groove.

7. Reinstall the lens and tighten the screws.

Bulb Replacement Headlamp

To replace the blackout headlamp, do the following:

1. Remove the three screws (A) from the front of the headlamp.

Appearance CareWashing Your VehicleThe exterior finish on the vehicle is a non-gloss orlusterless paint in accordance with MILHDBK-1223.Wash the vehicle using only mild soap and water. Donot use cleaning agents that are petroleum based, orthat contain acid or abrasives. All cleaning agents shouldbe flushed promptly and not allowed to dry on the surface.Do not towel dry or wax the paint surface. High pressurewashes may cause water to enter the vehicle.

Cargo Cover

Wash the cover using only mild soap and water. Do notuse cleaning agents that are petroleum based, or thatcontain acid or abrasives. All cleaning agents should beflushed promptly and not allowed to dry on the surface.Do not towel dry or wax the surface. The windows shouldbe washed with a water soaked cloth. Do not rub dry.After washing the cover make sure it is completelydry before lowering it. High pressure water maycause water to enter the cargo area.

Seat Covers

The interior seats have been fitted with fabric seat covers.The seat covers protect the seat from damage and canbe removed for cleaning. Refer to Cleaning the Inside ofYour Vehicle in the Vehicle Owner Manual for fabriccleaning.
