Tire inflation pressure
Checking tire pressures
Tire pressures in psi/kilopascal areshown on the driver's door post and arevisible when the door is open.
Only check the tire inflation pressuresof cold tires. This means after driving amaximum of 1.25 miles/2 km or afterthe vehicle has been parked for at least2 hours. Warm tires have higher infla-tion pressures.
In the following tire inflation pressure
table, all pressures are specified in thestandard units of pressure, psi and kilo-pascal, and apply to cold tires, i.e. tiresat ambient temperature.

Vehicles with Flat Tire Monitor:
After correcting the inflation pressures, reinitialize the system. Refer topage 92.
Check the tire pressures on a reg-ular basis – at least twice a
month – and before every extended journey. If this is not done, incorrect tirepressures can cause driving instability
and tire damage, ultimately resulting inaccidents.Remember to check the inflation pres-sure in the space-saver or standardspare tire.Inflate the spare tire to the highest infla-tion pressure specified for your vehi-
cle.<
Comply with tire approvalspecifications
The inflation pressures in the tableapply to BMW approved tire sizes and
tire manufacturers. Your BMW centercan provide you with more informationabout these. Other pressures may berequired for tires made by other manu-facturers.
Your vehicle is equipped with tires thatnot only meet US standards, but alsoEuropean standards. We recommend
the exclusive use of BMW approvedtires.

Safety feature
A contact strip is located on the insideupper frame of each of the front win-
dows. If pressure is exerted against thiscontact strip while a window is beingraised, the system will respond by stop-ping the window and then retracting it asmall distance.
Despite this safety feature, beextremely careful to ensure that
the closing path of the window is not
obstructed. Some types of objectsmight fail to trigger the contact strip insome situations – very thin objects, forinstance. You can override this safety feature bypressing the switch beyond the resis-tance point and holding it.<

For driving that is relaxed and less likelyto cause fatigue, you should select asitting position that reflects your per-
sonal requirements. In combinationwith the safety belts and airbags, thecorrect seating position also plays animportant role in enhancing occupantsafety in the event of an accident. Toensure that the vehicle's safety systemsprovide you with optimal protection, we
request that you direct your carefulattention to the following section.
For supplementary information ontransporting children, refer to page 60.
Sitting safely with airbags
Always maintain an adequate dis-
tance between yourself and theairbags. Always hold the steering wheelby the rim to keep any chance of injuryto hands or arms to an absolute mini-mum should the airbag be deployed.Never allow any objects, individuals oranimals to obstruct the areas between
passengers and airbags. Never use thefront airbag's cover as a storage tray orsupport for objects of any kind. Neverallow front passengers to rest their feetor legs on the airbag cover.<
For airbag locations and additionalinformation on airbags, refer topage 57.
Sitting safely with safety belts
Your vehicle offers five sitting positions, each of which is provided with a safetybelt.
Never allow more than one personto wear a single safety belt. Never
allow infants or small children to ride in
a passenger's lap. Avoid twisting thebelt while routing it firmly across thehips and shoulder, wear it as snuglyagainst your body as possible. Do notallow the belt to rest against hard orfragile objects. Do not route the beltacross your neck, or run it across sharp
edges. Be sure that the belt does notbecome caught or jammed. Avoidwearing bulky clothing and pull on thelap belt periodically to retension it overyour shoulders. In the event of a frontalimpact, a loose lap belt could slide overyour hips, leading to abdominal injury.
In addition, the safety belt's restrainteffectiveness is reduced if it is wornloosely. Expectant mothers shouldalways wear their safety belts, takingcare to position the lap belt against thelower hips, where it will not exert pres-sure against the abdominal area.<
For information on using the safetybelts, refer to page 51.

always sit upright and be properlyrestrained – infants and small childrenin appropriate child-restraint systems;larger children and adults using thesafety belts. Never let an occupant'shead rest near or on a side airbagbecause the inflating airbag couldcause a serious or fatal injury. Pleasenote that the word Airbag imprinted onthe door trim panel indicates the air-bag's location.Accident research shows that the saf-est place for children in an automobileis in the rear seat. However, a child sit-ting in the rear seat and not properlyrestrained could place his or her headon or near the airbag, if so equipped. For example, a child — even thoughbelted in — may fall asleep with his orher head against the side airbag. It maybe difficult for a driver to ensure thatchildren in the rear seat will remainproperly positioned at all times and notplace their heads on or near the sideairbag. Therefore, we recommend thatthe rear seat side airbags, if installed inthe vehicle, be deactivated if childrenwill travel in the rear seat. The rear seat side airbags may alreadyhave been deactivated by a BMW cen-ter. If you are uncertain of their status,
deactivated, please contact your BMWcenter.<
Even when all these guidelines are fol-lowed, there is still a small residual riskof injuries to the face, hands and armsoccurring from airbag deployment inisolated instances.
In sensitive individuals, the ignition and
inflation noise may induce a mild hear-ing loss that is temporary in mostcases.
Corresponding airbag warning labelsare found on both sun visors.
This is the right way a child should sit ina child-restraint when rear side airbagsare provided.

please read the following:Never install a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat of this vehicle.Your vehicle is equipped with an airbagsupplemental restraint system for thefront passenger. Because the backreston any rearward-facing child-restraintsystem – of the kind designed forinfants under 1 year and 20 lbs/9 kg –would be within the airbag's deploy-ment range, you should never mountsuch a device in the front passengerseat, since the impact of the airbagagainst the child-restraint's backrestcould lead to serious or fatal injuries. If it is necessary for a child – not aninfant – to ride in the front seat, certainprecautions should be taken. First, move the passenger seat as far awayfrom the dashboard as possible. Thisimportant precaution is intended tomaximize the distance between the air-
bag and the child. Older childrenshould be tightly secured with a safetybelt after they have outgrown a boosterseat that is appropriate for their age, height, and weight. Younger childrenshould be secured in an appropriateforward-facing child-restraint system
yNever install a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat. We strongly urge you to carefully readand comply with the instructions forinstallation and use provided by thechild-restraint's manufacturer wheneveryou use such a device.Do not attempt to modify child-restraintsystems. If you do this, the protectionprovided by these systems could beimpaired.Always ensure that all occupants – of allages – remain properly and securelyrestrained at all times.<

be if you could permanently configureyour vehicle's various features andadjustments to mirror your own individ-ual preferences. In engineering yourvehicle, BMW has provided for a num-ber of options for personal adjustmentthat can be programmed into your vehi-
cle at your BMW center. The available configuration data fall intotwo categories, according to whethertheir primary orientation is the vehicle –Vehicle Memory – or the individual –Key Memory. Provided that each per-son has a separate remote-control key,
you can have your BMW center enterbasic adjustment data for up to fourindividuals in the system.
The system then relies on a bilateraldata exchange to identify the individualuser and executes the selected settingswhenever the remote control unit is
used to disengage the door locks.
Distinguishing between keys
Color-coded decals have been pro-vided to help you distinguish individualkeys with different settings.
What the system can doYou can learn about the entire array offeatures this system offers at your BMWcenter.
You will see this symbol through-out the Owner's Manual. It is to
remind you at appropriate places of thesettings that are available to you.<

92 Flat Tire Monitor*
The concept
As you drive, the Flat Tire Monitorkeeps track of pressure levels in all fourtires. The system alerts you whenever
the inflation pressure of a tire falls sig-
System limitations
The Flat Tire Monitor cannot pro-vide you with advance warning of
sudden and severe tire damage caused
by external factors and does not detect

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2004-330i-sedan-owner-manual 92/182
the inflation pressure of a tire falls significantly below the pressure of anothertire.
The system actually detects pressureloss by monitoring differences in therelative speeds of the four wheels. Itinterprets variations outside specifiedlimits as severe pressure loss, and thenresponds by generating a warning.
Functional requirements
In order for the Flat Tire Monitor to learnthe correct tire inflation pressure,
please do the following:1. Check the tire inflation pressures in
all tires2. Compare them with the tire inflation
pressure table on page 26 and cor-rect them, if necessary
3. Initialize the system.
by external factors and does not detectthe balanced and very gradual pressureloss that takes place in all four tiresover an extended period of time.<
On the other hand, the following situa-tions can lead to a delayed detection of
pressure loss and even to the systemnot functioning:
>Driving on snow-covered or slipperyroads
>Performance-oriented driving: slip atthe drive wheels, high levels of lateralacceleration
>When driving with snow chains, falsewarnings and undetected pressurelosses may occur
>When driving with a space-saverspare tire, the Flat Tire Monitor can-not function.
Initializing the system
Each time you correct the pres-sure in a tire, or change a wheel or
tire, reinitialize the system immediatelyafterwards. This requires a bit of driv-
ing.<
1. Before driving off, start the enginebut do not start driving
2. Press the button as long as you needto until the yellow indicator lamp inthe instrument cluster lights up for afew seconds
3. Drive off.
It takes a few minutes before the FlatTire Monitor can detect a flat tire andissue a warning.

Determining the maximum load
1. Locate the following statement onyour vehicle's placard*:
The combined weight of occu-pants and cargo should never
exceed XXX kg or YYY lbs., as thiscould otherwise result in damage to thevehicle or unstable driving conditions.<
2. Determine the combined weight ofthe driver and passengers that will beriding in your vehicle
3. Subtract the combined weight of thedriver and passengers fromXXX kilograms or YYY pounds
and luggage load capacity is650 lbs.:1,400 lbs. minus 750 lbs. = 650 lbs.
5. Determine the combined weight ofluggage and cargo being loaded onthe vehicle. That weight may notsafely exceed the available cargoand luggage load capacity calculatedin Step 4
6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be trans-fered to your vehicle. Consult themanual for transporting a trailer todetermine how this may reduce theavailable cargo and luggage loadcapacity of your vehicle.
Stowing cargo

Break-in procedures
To ensure that your vehicle providesmaximum economy throughout a longservice life, we request that youobserve the following suggestions.
Engine and differential
Up to 1,250 miles/2,000 km:

Tires
Due to technical factors associatedwith their manufacture, tires do notachieve their full traction potential until
an initial break-in period has elapsed. Thus drive with extra care during theinitial 200 miles/300 km.
Ob l l d t t i
To break in the separate parking brakedrums, apply the parking brake lightlywhen coasting to a standstill – at a traf-fic signal, for instance – use caution toavoid posing a danger to other roadusers.
To avoid corrosion, repeat this proce-dure from time to time

Constantly vary both vehicle and enginespeeds, remembering not to exceed4,500 rpm or vehicle speeds of over100 mph / 160 km/h:
Obey your local and state maximumspeed limits.
Do not use full throttle, and avoidpressing the accelerator beyond thekickdown point during these initialmiles.
You can then proceed to increaseengine or vehicle speeds once the ini-tial 1,250 miles/2,000 km have elapsed.
Please remember to observe thesesame break-in procedures if either theengine or the differential should have tobe replaced later in the course of the
vehicle's service life.
Obey your local and state maximumspeed limits.
When the vehicle is operated on
wet or slushy roads, a wedge ofwater may form between the tire andthe road surface. This phenomenon isreferred to as hydroplaning, and canlead to partial or complete loss of trac-tion, as well as loss of vehicle controland braking effectiveness. Reduce your
speed on wet roads.<
Brake system
Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the brake pads and rotorsachieve the optimal pad-surface andwear patterns required for trouble-free
operation and long service life later on.
dure from time to time.
The brake lamps do not come onwhen the parking brake is set.
Vacuum for the brake system servo uniton your BMW is available only when theengine is running. When you move thevehicle with the engine off – when tow-ing, for example – substantially higherlevels of pedal force will be required tobrake the vehicle.<
Clutch
Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the clutch starts to operate atoptimum efficiency. Remember toengage the clutch carefully during thisinitial period.

do not, a wedge of water can formbetween tires and road surface. Thisphenomenon can lead to partial orcomplete loss of contact between thetires and road surface, as well as loss ofvehicle control and braking ability.Driving through water: do not drivethrough water on the road if it is deeperthan 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walk-ing speed. Otherwise, the vehicle'sengine, the electrical systems and the
transmission may be damaged.Rear parcel tray: never use it to storeheavy or hard objects; otherwise, occu-pants could be injured if the vehicle isbraked hard.Clothes hooks: when hanging clothingfrom the hooks, be sure that they will
not obstruct the driver's vision. Do nothang heavy objects on the hooks. If youdo so, they could cause personal injuryduring braking or evasive maneuvers.<
braking, you will exploit the full benefitsof the ABS system if you apply maxi-mum pedal pressure – panic stop.Since the vehicle maintains steering
responsiveness, you can avoid possibleobstacles with a minimum of steeringeffort, despite the full brake application.
Pulsation at the brake pedal combinedwith sounds from the hydraulic circuitsindicates to the driver that ABS is in itsactive mode.
Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)
DBC is included in the DSC, refer topage 87.
The system responds to sudden, high-intensity applications of force to the
brake pedal by automatically brakingthe vehicle with maximum boost toachieve the shortest possible brakingdistances during panic stops. This sys-tem exploits all the benefits of ABS.
CBC is an advanced engineeringdesign of the ABS. When braking whilecornering at high speed or braking dur-ing high lateral acceleration, or when
braking during a lane change, vehiclestability is improved and steeringresponse is enhanced.

regular basis, at least twice a monthand before every extended journey, refer to page 25. If this is not done, incorrect tire pressures can cause driv-ing instability and tire damage, ulti-mately resulting in accidents.<
Tire tread – tire damage
Inspect your tires frequently for treadwear, signs of damage and for foreignobjects lodged in the tread. Check thetread depth.
Tread depth should not be allowed to
go below 1/8 in / 3 mm, even thoughthe legally specified minimum treaddepth is 1/16 in / 1.6 mm.
Below 1/8 in / 3 mm tread depth, thereis a great risk of hydroplaning, even atrelatively moderate speeds and withonly small amounts of water on theroad. Tread wear indicators in thetread-groove base – see arrow – aredistributed around the wheel circumfer-ence and are labeled on the tire side-

Sustained high temperature can causethe material of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessive tem-perature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of
performance which all passenger cartires must meet under the FederalMotor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.Grades B and A represent higher levels
BMW advises against usingretreaded tires, since driving
safety may be impaired. This is due tothe possible variations in casing struc-tures and, in some cases, to their
extreme age, which can lead to adecrease in their durability.<

Grades B and A represent higher levelsof performance on the laboratory testwheel than the minimum required bylaw.
The temperature grade for this tireis established for a tire that is
properly inflated and not overloaded.Excessive speed, underinflation, orexcessive loading, either separately orin combination, can cause heat buildup
and possible tire failure.<
Uniform Tire Quality Grading
Quality grades can be found whereapplicable on the tire sidewall betweentread shoulder and maximum section
width. For example:Tread wear 200

Temperature A
Tire age
The date on which the tire was manu-factured is indicated by the code on the
sidewall:DOT... 3603 indicates that the tire wasmanufactured in week 36 of the year2003.
BMW recommends the replacement ofall tires – including the spare tire* –when the tires are no more than 6 years
old, even if a tire life of 10 years is pos-sible.
Run Flat tires*
Before purchasing tires, check if yourBMW is equipped with Run Flat tires. These are indicated by a circular sym-bol containing the letters RSC on thetire sidewall, refer to Changing a wheel. In this case, use only Run Flat tires, since no spare wheel is available in theevent of a flat.

The right choice
BMW recommends using onlywheels and tires that have been
approved by BMW for use on your par-
ticular model. Although other wheelsand tires may theoretically have thesame dimensions, variations in factorssuch as manufacturing tolerances can
lt i t t b t ti d b d
The correct wheel and tire combi-nation affects various systems
that would otherwise be impaired, forexample ABS, DSC and ADB-X/DBC.For this reason, use only tires of the
same manufacture and tread configura-tion. In the event of a flat tire, for exam-ple, remount the approved wheel andtire combination as soon as possible <
Winter tires
Choosing the right tire
BMW recommends the use of wintertires for operation under winter roadconditions. While all-season tires – with
M+S designation – provide better wintertraction than the corresponding sum-mer tires, they generally do not achievethe performance of winter tires.

result in contact between tire and body-work, ultimately leading to serious acci-dents. BMW cannot evaluate all tires

the safe performance of specific tirebrands and approved them for use.Consult any BMW center for details.Comply with any local/national regula-tions, for example by recording the tiretype in the vehicle documents.
tire combination as soon as possible.<
Storage
Always store tires in a cool, dry place.Store them away from light wheneverpossible. Protect the tires against con-tact with oil, grease and fuel.
Do not exceed the maximum tire infla-tion pressures specified on the tiresidewall.
In the interest of safe tracking andsteering response, install winter tiresmade by the same manufacturer and
having the same tread configuration onall four wheels.
Never exceed the maximumspeed for which the winter tires
are rated.Unprofessional attempts by laymen to
service tires can lead to damage andaccidents.Have this work performed by trainedprofessionals only. Any BMW centerhas the required technical knowledgeand the proper equipment and will behappy to assist you.<

This service strategy accurately reflectsyour own vehicle's specific needs bydefining maintenance intervals accord-ing to individual operating conditions.Minimal use drivers – those who drive
significantly fewer than6,200 miles/10,000 km annually –should have the engine oil changed atleast every 2 years since oil deterio-rates over time regardless of use

Driving with a spare tire*
For certain wheel/tire combina-tions, the size of the spare tire will
differ from that of the remaining tires. The spare tire is fully functional at allloads and speeds. However, the spare
tire should be replaced at the earliestpossible opportunity in order to achievethe original operating conditions.<
Run Flat tires are labeled on the side-wall with a circular symbol containingthe letters RSC. Run Flat tires consist ofself-supporting tires and special rims. The tire reinforcement ensures thatdriving remains possible to a restricteddegree in the event of pressure drop or
even if the tire is deflated.
When mounting or replacing sum-mer tires with winter tires, or vice
versa, use Run Flat tires since no sparewheel is available in the event of a flat.In this event, BMW recommends con-
sulting your BMW center. Your BMWcenter has the information needed forworking with Run Flat tires and isequipped with the necessary specialtools.<
