With the variety of process control systems available, it is often necessary to convert an input signal intoa format that the control system will accept. Signal conditioners take signals from an assortment of fieldinstruments such as thermocouples and RTDs, and convert those signals into any of several standardinstrument signals (1-5 V, 4-20 mA, etc.) while providing isolations.

Signal conditioners are also beneficial to the accurate transfer of these signals and the elimination ofground loops.

Pepperl+Fuchs signal conditioners utilize the latest technology, offering unparalleled protection againstground loops while maintaining optimum signal accuracy and complete isolation. There are three basictypes of KF signal conditioners:

Loop Powered Repeaters/Isolators: Loop powered repeaters do not require a separatepower supply. Available in single and dual channel models, these transformer isolatedsignal conditioners transfer analog DC signals with each channel working as a DC isolatorproviding 2,500 VDC isolation between the input and output.

Analog Isolators: These units require a separate power supply and provide signalconditioning and 3-way isolation to various input signals.

Limit Alarms: This class of signal conditioners provides two Form C relay outputs withadjustable high and low switchpoints and selectable control safe and normal operation. They also require a separate power supply and provide 3-way isolation.

The latter two categories are fully field-configurable and provide 1,800 VDC isolation separating input, output and power supply. Input and output ranges, modes of operation, switchpoints, etc., can beprogrammed in the field via DIP switches on the side of the housing. Some models also offer a PCinterface. Input, zero, and span are adjustable by potentiometer to 50% for all input ranges. The wide-ranging capabilities and field-configurable settings allow for numerous options in a diverse range ofapplications.

All P+F analog isolators and limit alarms also contain the ASIC chip for increased reliability. ASIC (Appli-cation Specific Integrated Circuitry) substantially reduces failures by virtually eliminating discrete com-ponents and their solder joints where most faults occur. Printed circuit board connections are reducedby 70%.

    OPERATION:

The KFD0-CS-1.50 is a single-channeldevice that does not require a separatepower supply. Due to the 24 VDC inputvoltage limitation and the internal voltagedrop, the maximum output voltage underload is 23 VDC. The maximum internalresistance is 230 ohms. At input voltagesgreater than 26.1 V, the internal voltagedrop is lower than with input voltagesbelow 26.1 V.

    Current/VoltageDriver CurrentOutput Isolator

The KFD2-CD-1.32 provides three-wayisolation and is used for driving I/P converters, electrically operated valves and positioners. The KFD2-CD-1.32 is available in severalversions.

    CURRENT INPUT OPTION

Current flowing into terminals 10 and 11(9)passes through resistor Internal Load, generating a voltage that is transferred to theDC/DC converter. A current limit circuit in linewith terminal 9 protects Rm from damage. Themaximum voltage drop across the input is only4 V at 20 mA, allowing the connection ofseveral KFD2-CD-1.32 input circuits in series.

    VOLTAGE INPUT OPTION

Voltage within the specified input range istransferred to terminals 9 and 10 via anamplifier and a DC/DC converter. A voltagelimiter circuit protects the amplifier fromincorrect input switching and overvoltage, butwill draw current through a 50 mA fuse duringoperation.

    CURRENT OUTPUT OPTION

Voltage transferred across the DC/DCconverter provides a proportional current atterminals 1 and 2. For all supply voltages, thereis a minimum of 17 V at 20 mA to drive loadsof up to 850 Ω.

    UniversalTemperatureInput Isolator

The KFD2-UT-1 is designed for connection toRTDs (Pt100 and Ni100) or thermocouples (B, E,J, K, L, N, R, S and T), and provides three-wayisolation. The inputs, outputs and power supplyare galvanically isolated.

This device also features internal/external coldjunction compensation, burnout monitoring forthermocouples and burnout and short circuitmonitoring for RTDs.

All settings are programmed and calibratedthrough a serial interface to PC (on-lineprogramming--see the P+F web site for moreinformation).

A signal at terminals 2 and 3 is transmitted acrossthe isolator and converted to an equivalent outputat terminals 7 and 8. Terminal 7 has the samepolarity as terminal 2.

All parameters are programmable through a K-ADP1 cable (sold separately) that provides theconnection between the programming socket ofthe KFD2-UT and the RS232 PC interface.

Accessories include removable terminals withinternal cold junction compensation (K-CJC) anda K-SK programming software kit. The K-ADP1and K-SK are required unless the KFD2-UT isconfigured by P+F.

This unit is not intrinsically safe.

    AC Current/VoltageInput Current/VoltageOutput Isolator

The KFDX-AC accepts an AC voltage/currentinput and provides a fully isolated proportionalDC current or voltage output. In order toeliminate ground loops, the I/O channel isoptically isolated to 1,800 VDC andtransformer isolated from the power supply.

The input can be configured in the field forone of twelve voltage ranges from 100 mV to250 V and 4 current ranges from 10 mA to100 mA. Output is linear to the input, configurable for five ranges: 0-5 V, 0-10 V, 0-1 mA, 0-20 mA, or 4-20 mA.

The KFDX-AC is outfitted with a green dualfunction power/signal status LED. When theunit is powered, the LED is illuminated. Whenthe input signal is over 110% of the full scalerange, the LED flashes at 8 Hz.

The KFDA-DCV accepts a DC voltage inputand provides two adjustable relay outputs. This limit alarm also effectively eliminatesground loops with 1,800 VDC isolationseparating input, output and power supply.

Setpoints can be configured as HI or LO inselectable controlsafe or non-controlsafeoperating modes. The KFDA-DCV relies ondeadband (hysteresis) and constant samplingof the input to prevent false switching whenthe input varies slightly on either side of thesetoint. The input must remain beyond thesetpoint for 100ms, uninterrupted, to qualifyas a valid trip condition. To return the alarmto an untripped condition, the input signalmust be outside the deadband and remainthere for 100 ms. This time-based dynamicdeadband, in addition to the evaluation ofhysteresis, improves setpoint stability. Selectunipolar operation for inputs that do notchange in polarity.

The KFDA-DCV is equipped with three LEDs.The first is a green INPUT LED which indicatesDC power and input signal status. If this LEDdoes not illuminate on power-up, check wiringconnections. When the signal input is over110% of the full scale range, the INPUT LEDwill flash at 8 Hz; below 0% it will flash at 4Hz. Each setpoint has its own LED whichindicates the relay state; an illuminated LEDindicates a tripped condition.

The KFD2-GS-1.2W is a trip amplifier for twoindependently field-configurable limit alarms.Three-way galvanic isolated units convert 0/4-20mA, 0/1-5 V and 0/2-10 V signals into trip pointoutputs.

For high alarm indication, the status of the contactoutput changes when the setpoint is exceededand will not reset until a lower value is met. Thedifference between these states is the adjustablehysteresis.

The trip alarm is adjustable by a selector switchand potentiometer.

A monitoring voltage output of 0-10 V can be usedto adjust limit values and hysteresis withoutinterrupting the input signal.

The KFU8-CRG-1.D transmitter powersupply is suited for a variety of measuringtasks. 2- and 3-wire transmitters as wellas active power supplies with 0/4-20 MAsignals can be connected. Two relays andan active 0/4-20 mA current output areavailable.

The input has lead breakage and shortcircuit monitoring.

The universal power requirement allowsAC or DC power of unit.

Programming is via a PC (using PACTware)or by using the control panel on the frontof the device.

This unit is not intrinsically safe.
