What does NCBB do to reduce its environmental impact?

• Adopted official recycling policy:

-The Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) is determined to make reducing the amount of material being sent to the local landfill a company wide priority beginning in 2008. -Organizational PPP # 1049 refers to the corporate policy.

• Employee Orientation includes 5-10 minute powerpoint

A message from the recycling committee:

Thanks to the efforts from staff at all four sites and mobiles during 2008, the NCBB recycled a record number of materials.  Here are our totals from Recycling Enterprises, Retro-Fit Recycling, The UPS Store, and some in-

house numbers.  

Cardboard – 17,710 #Mixed Papers – 6,155 #

Magazines – 296 # Plastics – 3,190 #

Aluminum cans  - 355 #Styrofoam – 150 #, that’s a lot of strofoam

Wooden Pallets – 30Used Donor Beds – 5 Used Ice Machine – 1

Used computer and electronics – 787 #Rechargeable batteries – 13

Regular batteries – 15 #Fluorescent bulbs – 91PCP filled ballasts – 6

Other Environmentally-Friendly Projects

• Light bulbs are being changed out to CFB bulbs which require less wattage and last longer

• Thermostats are on timers that lower the set points at night and on weekends.

• Restroom lights are also connected to motion sensors to avoid being left on for long periods of time.

• Operations areas (1st Floor) at 84th Street utilizing new technology: ground water heat pump system (GWHP)-also connected system to computer server room to add cooling.

• Landscaping has undergone changes to plants that do not require frequent watering, as well as the use of mulch to help conserve moisture.

New landscaping project is in the works:

Looking for a volunteer group (Lincoln Green Scene) to help replace existing planting beds and convert to perennial rock gardens with low moisture/native plants that require very low

maintenance/financial support.

• 100 employees• Four locations/four mobile vehicles

Recycle Committee to become Green Team:• currently three members• working on membership from each department• will promote employee suggestions/involvement

Ex: now recycle plastic packaging from collection kits that was previously thrown out.
