I

t was the opening game of the tournament. Mali the hosts played 4-4-2 with variations. The positive aspect was the careful distribution of passes to teammates especially through the wings making a balance between defence and attack. The negative aspect was the failure to consolidate their possession to create scoring chances. Liberia also played 4-4-2. They were quick to the ball and were accurate in ball distribution and positioning but poor in finishing the attacks. Mali played with two stoppers. They made close and sometimes loose marking according to the situation on hand. Liberia marked closely four defenders with the full support of the midfield players retreatimg back to create a well balanced defence and this was spear-headed by George Weah. Keita Seydou played brilliantly for Mali through the right wing position creating open spaces for the strikers to move in. They spread out their game effectively from the midfield to the extremes but their crosses were challenged by the opposing defence. Liberia played more towards the right si
