Regular Attendance is Important

Belmont North Public School recognises that students need to attend school on a regular basis to gain the maximum benefit from schooling in order to optimise their life opportunities. At Belmont North Public School we understand that for maximum transfer of knowledge 95% percent attendance is necessary. Attendance lower than 95% impacts on academic standards.

At Belmont North Public School there is an expectation that once enrolled, students will attend on a regular basis, and positive attendance patterns should be fostered. It is our focus to wrap positive support around each student to maximise their attendance.

(Please see attached letter and posters for more information about the importance of regular attendance).

Principal’s Report Continued…..

INTERESTING FACTS

Did you know?

• Missing one day a week of school from Year 1 to Year 11 is the equivalent of missing two years and one term of schooling.

• Being half an hour late to school each day from Year 1 to Year 10 is equivalent to missing one year and one-and-a-half terms of schooling.

• Being absent five days a term from Year 1 to Year 10 adds up to more than one year of missed schooling.

• There is a direct correlation between attendance and achievement. • Frequent absences make it difficult for teachers to ensure your child learns what they need to. • Patterns of attendance/absence are set up in the early years of schooling. • Students who are frequently absent from school are over-represented in the juvenile justice system. • Girls are absent more often than boys. • Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive relationships with their peers. • Students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to end up homeless. • Aboriginal students are absent twice as much as non-Aboriginal students. • Research shows that students who are often absent from school are likely to earn less than their peers

as adults. In the event that school interventions to improve student attendance fail or continue to be unsatisfactory, the school will be required to make an Application to the Home School Liaison Program local manager for consideration of further action. An attendance officer may be allocated to work with you and the school to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

3-6 SWIMMING CARNIVAL A fantastic day was had by all students who attended the Swimming Carnival last Wednesday. What a great way to spend such a hot day! The sportsmanship was amazing! Congratulations to all of our participants on a fantastic effort. Good luck to Tahn, Cailan, Jay, Jessie, Anastasia, Mykka, Zoe, Koby, Scarlett, Lacey and Michala who will represent BNPS at the Zone Swimming Carnival on Thursday and Friday.

K-2 WATER FUN DAY K-2 had a blast last Wednesday with sponges, slip ‘n’ slides, sprinklers, water guns and water play. It was reported that some of the teachers may have gotten a bit wet too!

Debating Last Tuesday, 8 students from Years 5 and 6 attended a Debating workshop at Valentine Public School. All students worked hard and enthusiastically to develop their public speaking and debating skills and were a credit to our school. We gained some excellent knowledge and strategies to use when debating and received an honourable mention from the adjudicator in one activity. Congratulations to all students. Mrs Cindy Gibson.
