United Way works strategically with SAFER St. Lucie to plan and to educate residents throughout all stages of disaster cycle; to support resiliency of the County in disaster situations; and to ensure and improved preparedness & faster return to normalcy. Following the 2004 hurricanes, UW worked with local recovery groups, businesses, UW of Florida, foundations, and other agencies to secure and distribute over $1,152,528 to agencies working on the frontline of the disaster. Familywize Prescription Drug Discount Program: United Way (UW) runs a prescription drug discount program so families and individuals can purchase needed medication at a reduced cost. UW collaborates with nonprofit agencies and businesses to distribute cards throughout the community. It is estimated that one out of every four people in our community has trouble paying for needed prescription medicine. Since the inception of the program in 2008, 27,944 people in our community have saved $3,177,642 on the cost of their medication.

Emergency Food & Shelter Program (ESFP)

United Way’s plays a large role in the prevention of homelessness & hunger through the coordination, planning and execution of a federally funded Emergency Food and Shelter Program. This program is an annual allocation from FEMA to each county in the country based on population & unemployment. United Way of SLC acts as the lead convener of the local EFSP Board and works with recipient agencies to see that all necessary paperwork is submitted in a timely manner.
