1.General Information 1.1. This instruction is designed for specialists who are involved in the fire protection of metal structures of buildings and facilities using AKTERM Fireproof intumescent fire protection paint that is applied to the surface in the form of a coating. 1.2. AKTERM Fireproof paint coating is used as protection against open fire or other high-temperature impact of steel beams, supports, industrial and civil construction structures both indoors and outside (when using complex coating) in order to increase the fire protection. 1.3. AKTERM Fireproof complies with the requirements of fire safety rules and norms according to GOST R 53295-2009. 1.4. AKTERM Fireproof is produced by OOO AKTERM. 1.5. In its initial state AKTERM Fireproof basically is a system of pigments and fillers with added biocidal, modifying, stabilizing and intumescent additives. The paint has a characteristic faint odor that disappears once the coating is formed. 1.6. The fire-protective effect of the paint is based on the formation of a thick layer of intumesced foam (coked cellular material)on the surface of the metal the paint is applied to at a high temperature, this foam having low heat conductivity. The intumescence generates gases and water vapor, which makes for cooling of the surface. 1.7. The ready surface is a polymer film that only serves for fire protection and does not have anti-corrosion properties, which is why applying AKTERM Fireproof is only allowed to a metal surface protected against corrosion. It is recommended to use GF-021 base coat as a means of protection against corrosion. 1.8. When applying AKTERM Fireproof in the conditions of the negative impact of the environment it is necessary to apply a layer of environment-resistant protective paint coating over AKTERM Fireproof - weather-resistant varnish or enamel. 1.9. The process of intumescence of the protective film begins at the temperature of about 250°С. The intumescence coefficient is at least 10 (when exposed to temperatures up to 500°С).

• Color matching/tinting to get pastel shades is possible by adding waterborne color pastes, but not more than 2-3 % of the paint mass.

2.2. The fire protection efficiency of AKTERM Fireproof™ paint applied over the GF-021 0.05 mm thick anticorrosion base coat, defined according to GOST R 53295-2009, is not lower than group three (fire endurance 90 minutes) for metal structures with the effective thickness of 5.8 mm, with the dry layer thickness being 1.67 mm. The flow rate of the paint and the dry layer thickness are defined depending on the necessary fire endurance of the metal structures and the effective thickness of the metal. This information is presented in Table 2 **.

3. Application Notes

2.3. The practical consumption is shown without including process losses. The process losses depend on the application method, shape of the surface in question and operating conditions. 2.4. The time of drying to degree 3 at 20°С and the air humidity of not more than 70 % is not more than 2 hours. The final time of the formation of a coating capable of displaying fire-resistant properties is at least 24 hours (with the temperature of application being 20°С and air humidity being not more than 70 %). As the temperature decreases and the air humidity increases the drying time increases accordingly. A quality paint coating can not be formed at the temperature lower than 5°С and the humidity over 85 %.

3.1. Working with the AKTERM Fireproof™ coating is acceptable for specially trained workers who are eligible for working at heights and working with electrical tools and who do not have eyesight counter-indications (who are able to discern unacceptable defects of the coating in the given operating conditions). 3.2. AKTERM Fireproof™ is ready for use. Before application the paint needs to be thoroughly stirred. When stored for a long period of time the paint’s viscosity may increase – in such a case the paint can be diluted with water before use, but the water must constitute not more than 3% of the paint mass. 3.3. Before application of the paint the metal surface must be cleaned from rust using any available method (manually with wire brushes or sandpaper or using sandblasting) until the metal is clean. Then the surface is defatted with organic solvents and dried at a temperature close to 20°С within 2-3 hours. 3.4. The prepared and defatted surface is coated with GF-021 anti-corrosion base coat using a brush, a roller or a sprayer (if a sprayer is used, two layers must be applied with intermediate drying at least 24 hours). The base coat layer thickness must be at least 0.05 mm. The consumption of the base coat depends on the method of application and on average is 90-120 g/m2 without including process losses. The drying time for the primer coat is at least 24 hours. 3.5. The AKTERM Fireproof™ paint is applied layer by layer over the base-coated surface with intermediate drying of at least 24 hours. The thickness of the single-layer coating must be not more than 350-400 microns of moist film (or 230-290 microns of dry film), the consumption with that level of thickness is about 500 g/m2 without including process losses. 3.6. The paint is applied manually with a brush or a roller or using the method of airless spraying with high-pressure units. 3.7. The thickness of the moist and dry layers is controlled by a thickness gauge (a device for measuring the thickness of the SNU 115 dry coating, a tool for measuring the thickness of the moist layer). The external appearance of the resulting coating is controlled visually. Resist spots and cracks are not acceptable. 3.8. The painting works must be conducted indoors or under a roof with the temperature of the surface in question and the outside temperature being from +5 °С to +30 °С. 3.9. The operational lifetime of the fire protection paint coating is 10 years under the condition of adhering to the requirements of application and use.
