Literary Elements– aspects or characteristics of literature.

• Plot– the chain of related events that tells us what happens in a story.

• Subplot– plots that are part of the larger story but are not as important.

• Conflict– problem(s) faced by a character.

– Internal Conflicts– take place in a character’s mind. (Fear, jealousy)

– External Conflicts– when a character struggles with outside forces.

• Climax– the event that decides the outcome of the conflict.

• Resolution– how the story turns out. The end of the story.

• Theme– the central idea or message the author conveys.

• Parallel Episodes– events which are repeated several times. (3 Little Pigs)

• Context Clues– hints, embedded in the story (foreshadowing).

Etymology– origin and development of a word.

Proposition– an important idea or opinion that can be supported by facts, statistics, examples, anecdotes, definitions or expert opinions.
