Philosophy of the Athletic Program

The Apollo-Ridge School District recognizes that athletic activities provide students with important opportunities for a total education. Athletics function as an integral part of the curriculum. These activities teach students’ lifetime values such as commitment, discipline, hard work, leadership, teamwork, and physical fitness. Together, these all lay a foundation for academic success.

Participation in athletic activities contributes not only to the physical health of our students, but to their emotional and social growth as well. It promotes a sense of unity and cooperation among athletes, the student body, and the entire Apollo-Ridge community. Our sports teams will always strive to win, but never at the expense of character, healthy attitudes and habits, and good judgment. We will always emphasize excellence, effort, improvement, and respect for coaches, teammates and officials.  Apollo-Ridge athletes should be known for their character and class, humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

Our athletic program is designed to develop, promote, and provide the following: self-esteem, school spirit and pride, good citizenship, sportsmanship, cooperation, higher academic performance, responsibility to self and others, respect, positive role models, healthy lifestyles, team building and life-long wellness.

The Apollo-Ridge School District believes that participation in athletics is a rewarding and memorable way to make the student’s education a wholesome, worthwhile experience.

Expectations of Student Athletes5/18/2023 4

Page 5: 1.cdn.edl.io · Web viewThe Apollo-Ridge School District recognizes that athletic activities provide students with important opportunities for a total education. Athletics function

a. Academics Remember that academic performance is your primary responsibility. The main reason that students attend school is to learn, and therefore academics always come first. Maintaining academic eligibility is the student’s responsibility – not that of coaches, teachers, or parents.b. Sportsmanship Positive sportsmanship is an expectation of our athletic program. Teams are expected to play “harder” than our opponents, but also are expected to play within the rules of the sport and the boundaries of clean and fair play.c. Respect At the very core of citizenship is respect--respect for oneself and others. The student-athlete is to demonstrate respect for coaches, teachers, officials, spectators, school facilities, equipment, and opponents at all times.d. Dedication A student-athlete must be willing to dedicate himself/herself to sports. The athlete should be aware that nothing worthwhile is accomplished without hard work and a sincere desire to succeed. The athlete must also realize the importance of work in the off-season. This commitment may be challenging and difficult at times. Remember. Attitude, effort, and persistance will assist one in reaching his/her dreams and becoming successful in life. e. Coming Ready to Play Student-athletes should come ready to practice on time, be focused and ready to learn. In addition, they should be prepared both physically and mentally for the season by training in the preseason.

Along with the privilege of competing for and representing Apollo-Ridge High School on the athletic field comes the responsibility and the above expectations. Athletes are held to a higher standard because of their high visibility. If Apollo-Ridge High School’s athletic program expects to continue to receive respect, we must work hard to earn it each and every day. Our actions are scrutinized not only on the field of play, but in the classroom, and throughout the Apollo-Ridge community. “Be the best you can be…….everyday, in every way, and on every play!”This commitment to total effort is what a student-athlete is all about.

Winning is not an outcome; it’s an attitude!

3) All injuries, regardless of severity, need to be immediately reported to the coach and the Athletic Trainer. Student-athletes competing in any sports at Apollo-Ridge High School will be initially evaluated by the Athletic Trainer and, if needed, promptly sent for secondary evaluations by the appropriate medical personnel.

Athlete’s Conduct (PIAA)

Beginning with the 1998-99 season, the PIAA requires that any athlete ejected from interscholastic competition forfeit the privilege of playing in the next interscholastic competition(s) at the level the ejection occurred. This pertains to both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. The athlete will not be permitted to dress in uniform while serving the suspension.

When/if an ejection occurs, the head coach and student athlete will meet with the athletic director to discuss the circumstances of the ejection then be responsible for completing a written statement describing the circumstances regarding the ejection, then forward it to the athletic office. Copies of this statement will be kept on file in the athletic office and also attached to the PIAA form specific to student athlete ejections and forwarded to the WPIAL and PIAA offices.

5/18/2023 16

Page 17: 1.cdn.edl.io · Web viewThe Apollo-Ridge School District recognizes that athletic activities provide students with important opportunities for a total education. Athletics function

If a second ejection occurs during the same sport season, the student athlete will again be subject to the disciplinary actions of the PIAA. Furthermore, disciplinary action taken by the school may include, but not limited to, the student athlete being removed from the team for the remainder of the sport season.

Transferring from Sport to SportIt is understood that an athlete’s interests may change in a given sport and that he/she would prefer to play another sport. If an athlete wishes to switch to another sport, the following steps must be adhered to:

1. Athlete informs coaches of both sports of his/her intentions.

2. A final roster of the sport the athlete would like to join has not been established where “cuts” have been made.

3. Both coaches and athletic director support the transfer.

No student-athlete may quit a team and join another team in the same season once a team roster has been established. If a student-athlete wishes to quit a team in the same season, both coaches must be in agreement and the team the student-athlete wishes to join must still be in the team selection process.

Page 18: 1.cdn.edl.io · Web viewThe Apollo-Ridge School District recognizes that athletic activities provide students with important opportunities for a total education. Athletics function

Transportation PolicyWhen the Apollo-Ridge School provides transportation to and from athletic events, student-athletes are required to ride that transportation. The members of the athletic staff feel it is in the best interest of team unity that everyone travel together and share the game experience. As the “guardian” during these trips, the athletic staff must be able to account for the whereabouts of all student-athletes and insure their safety.

In the event that there are extenuating personal circumstances and a parent/guardian wishes to take responsibility for the transportation of his/her son or daughter, it is required, barring unforeseen circumstances, that the parent/guardian provide written notice with reason for request to the coach requesting the exception 24 hours in advance. The request requires the approval of the Athletic Director or building principal. A parent/guardian must also present himself/herself to a member of the coaching staff informing the coach that his/her child is leaving with him/her. Student-athletes may then ride with their parent/guardian. Student-athletes may not ride with other student-athletes or anyone else other than their parent/guardian. (See page 2 for Parent/Guardian Permission: Student Travel form)

Expectations of Parents1. Support Your Student-Athlete

Encourage participation. Allow the student to select the sport based on his/her perceived ability and interest. Provide a pressure-free environment regarding scholarship expectations.

Be supportive of your athlete. See that his/her needs are met. See that he/she has the right equipment. Attend as many of your child’s contests as possible.

Stress the importance of the complete athlete….both the mental and the physical preparation.

Do not emphasize quitting as the best way to solve a problem, but rather perseverance.

2. Keep Athletics in Perspective Emphasize that academics must always come first. Assist the student to structure time wisely so that athletics do not

interfere with academics.5/18/2023 18

Page 19: 1.cdn.edl.io · Web viewThe Apollo-Ridge School District recognizes that athletic activities provide students with important opportunities for a total education. Athletics function

Use athletics as a way to teach our children how to interact with other people during emotional situations. Help your child understand that athletic ability varies with body maturity and that effort is just as important, if not more important, than natural ability.

3. Supporting the Program Be supportive of the coaching staff. Go to all meetings requested by

the coaches. Being on a successful team is important to your athlete. Support the coaches preparation plan. Talk to your athlete frequently about how things are going with his/her sport. Make arrangements to talk to the coaches privately and early about perceived problems.

During the season, take into consideration practice and games when planning family events.

Understand the needs of a particular sport. Some require more equipment, while some take more time.

Model positive behavior.

Communication Plan for Athletic Concerns

For programs to be as successful as possible, it is important that both the parent/guardian and coach have a clear understanding of each other’s positions. During an athletic season, situations may occur that cause a player and parent/guardian to have concerns. If this transpires, the player should first approach the coach politely and respectfully to resolve the issue in a mature manner. There may also be times when a parent wishes to request a conference with a coach. The following procedure will ensure that concerns can be quickly resolved.

Protocol for Parental/Guardian Concerns

Contact the coach to have a discussion or set up an appointment. Our athletic policy states: Never confront a coach before, during, or after a practice or a game. Our coaches are responsible for the supervision and safety of their athletes first and foremost. These can be emotional times for both parties. Meetings and discussions of this nature do not promote resolution.

Issues NOT to be Discussed with Coaches Playing time (sole discretion of coaches) Play calling Team strategy Other student-athletes

If a next step is NecessaryIf the coach cannot be reached or the meeting does not bring a resolution, contact the Athletic Director at 724-478-6000 x 6032 to make further arrangements.

Communication Plan for Athletic Concerns (continued)

Chain of Command to be Followed When Expressing Concerns

1. Contact the Head Coach2. Contact The Athletic Director at 724-478-6000 x 60323. Contact the High School Principal at 724-478-6000 x1001.4. Contact the Superintendent at 724-478-6000 x60105. Contact the Apollo-Ridge School Board

If this process is not followed and a level is bypassed, the parent or individual expressing the concern will be redirected back to the appropriate level.

It can be very difficult to accept when your child does not play as much as you had hoped. Coaches make decisions based on what they believe to be best for all students involved. Playing time is the sole discretion and judgment of the coaches.
