MULTICULTURAL ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOLSENIOR SEMINAR SYLLABUS 2015-2016
Course Description: Why am I taking this course?Senior Seminar is a comprehensive and mandatory half-year course for all 12th grade students at Multicultural Academy. The purpose of this course is to prepare students for life after high school and enable them to create an informed post-secondary plan of action. This course will expose students to different post-secondary options, with a particular emphasis on post-secondary education.
Objectives: What will I learn as a result of taking this course? Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Understand the College Process and College Application Requirements Meet a variety of application deadlines on a regular basis Take the SAT Apply to six (6) colleges and/or post secondary schools—two safety schools, two target
schools and two reach schools (Out of the 6 schools, one should be Community College of Philadelphia and one state school)
Write one personal statement Create a usable resume Request at one letter of recommendation Compile a Brag Sheet to accompany recommendation requests Write thank you letters to recommenders
2. Learn about college life and expectations
3. Understand how to finance a post-secondary education Submit completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Research and apply for at least five (5) scholarships Learn different types of loans

Set attainable short and long term financial goals Track personal spending and create a usable budget Calculate a variety of interest rates and understand types of fees associated with lending Understand the benefits and dangers of credit cards
As a part of this course, students will be required to have several meetings with Ms. O’Brien.
Instructional Materials:
Binder Loose leaf paper Dividers Pens/or pencils Open Mind
Grading: Students will be graded using the following items: Binder Check (2X) Class Participation Pop Quizzes Tests (Monthly)
Grading: Students will be graded on a point system
Expectations and Rules: Respect self and others Arrive on time and ready to work Come prepared with materials Maintain a positive attitude Use school appropriate language Classroom, computer lab, and auditorium should be kept clean at all times Respect all college representatives
