INTRODUCTION
PURPOSE
This numerical list includes the principal products andservices of the manufacturing and mining industries in theUnited States. The data for these products and serviceswere collected in the 1992 Census of Manufactures on 213long forms (MC-2001 through MC-3912) and 78 shortreport forms (MC-2071 through MC-3975) and in the 1992Census of Mineral Industries on 10 long (MC-1001 throughMC-1403) and 2 short forms (MC-1371 and MC-1471).Each report form covers one industry or more and includesa product inquiry which lists the primary products of theindustries as well as the chief secondary products fre-quently reported by establishments classified in the indus-tries on that report form.
Products and services are arrayed generally in ascend-ing seven-digit numerical order followed by alphabeticalcharacters within their respective five-digit codes (productclasses), the product classes in order within their four-digitcodes (industries), and the industries within their three-digitindustry groups and two-digit major groups. Major groups, industry groups, and industries, as presented in this man-ual, are in accord with both title and content of theStandard Industrial Classification Manual: 1987 edition, published by the Office of Management and Budget.1
In addition to the more than 6,300 products for whichinformation is collected primarily in the censuses of man-ufactures and mineral industries, there are over 4,500products for which information is collected monthly, quar-terly, and annually in the Census Bureau’s Current Indus-trial Reports (CIR) program. Where CIR product detail isavailable, the census report requests only broad aggre-gates that can be ‘‘tied in’’ with the product detail in theCIR program.
PRODUCT CODING SYSTEM
Each product or service is assigned a seven-digit code. The product coding structure represents an extension, bythe Bureau of the Census, of the four-digit industrialclassification of the manufacturing and mining industriesas defined in the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)System. The SIC, developed under the direction of theOffice of Management and Budget by the Technical Com-mittee on Industrial Classification, classifies establish-ments to the four-digit industry level by their primary type ofactivity.
The classification system operates so that the industrialcoverage is progressively narrower with the successiveaddition of digits. This is illustrated as follows:

COMPARABILITY BETWEEN 1992 AND 1987
This manual attempts to preserve the historical compa-rability between the 1992 and 1987 censuses for productclasses and product codes in appendixes I and J. Appen-dix I presents the linkage from 1992 to 1987. Appendix Jprovides the mirror-type linkage from 1987 to 1992. Theuse of these appendixes is illustrated below using ethylalcohol and other industrial organic chemicals, n.e.c.:

For 1992, Product Classes 28692, Ethyl Alcohol; and28698, Other Organic Chemicals, N.E.C.; were split outfrom 1987 Product Class 28695, Ethyl Alcohol and OtherOrganic Chemicals, N.E.C. 1987 product code 28695 11was split into 1992 codes 28692 10 and 20; the same splitwas applied to 1987 codes 28695 25 and 27. Finally, 1987product codes 28695 31 through 98 were recoded to 1992codes 28698 31 through 98.

CURRENT INDUSTRIAL REPORTS (CIR)
The 1992 Census of Manufactures, as in earlier cen-suses, utilizes the tieline relationship for reporting sum-mary information in the census where product detail isbeing reported for the same period in a CIR or, in a fewinstances, surveys conducted by other Federal Govern-ment agencies. The product detail that is collected monthly, quarterly, or annually in the CIR is not duplicated in thecensus of manufactures. Instead a single (tieline) code iscollected in the census that corresponds to the sum of thedetail appearing if the CIR is used. For tielines related tothe CIR, the product detail covered in the commoditysurveys comprises, additionally, more than 4,500 productlines, each coded to the seven-digit level. The productscollected in the CIR are shown in Appendixes A and B,‘‘Product Descriptions in Current Industrial Reports ThatRelate to Tielines in 1992 Census of Manufactures’’ and‘‘Product Descriptions in Production-Only Current Indus-trial Reports.’’ The product coding structure used for thecensus and the CIR includes about 11,000 categories.
FORMAT OF MANUAL
In this numerical list, the product code column, whichincludes codes used in the 1992 publications, is based onthe 1987 SIC structure. Appended to each seven-digitproduct code is an eighth digit called the ‘‘check digit’’used to verify the keying of product codes for computerprocessing. The check digit is developed from the seven-digit product code itself but is not part of the product code. The sixth and seventh digits of the product code takentogether are unique and identify the product. Occasionally, the sixth digit will be similar for a group of related productswithin the product class but the sixth digit by itself is notsignificant. These products and services codes are arrayed(generally) in ascending numerical order within their respec-tive five-digit product classes, the product classes withintheir four-digit industries, the industries within their three-digit industry groups, and the industry groups within theirtwo-digit major groups. Major groups, industry groups, andindustries are titled in accordance with the short SIC titlesshown in Part II, Numerical List of Short Titles, StandardIndustrial Classification Manual, 1987 edition. Titles anddescriptions of the five-digit product classes and seven-digit products have been developed by the Bureau of theCensus. The titles of the two- to five-digit levels are shownin capital letters.
To the right of each four-digit industry title is the numberof the report form used in the censuses to collect theinformation for products and services of that industry (forexample, MC-1001). The product code, check digit, prod-uct description, unit of measure for quantity data collected, and kinds of data collected are given for each product.(See abbreviations section for key to the abbreviationsused for unit of quantity and data collected.)
This manual contains ten appendixes. Appendixes Aand B list the product detail brought into the census byboth tielines to and special production-related surveys
of the CIR. Appendix C relates these Current IndustrialReports to their census tielines. Appendixes D, E, and Fcontain the codes for the contract and miscellaneousreceipts reported by manufacturing and mining establish-ments. Appendix G shows those products that are primaryto more than one industry; that is, produced elsewhere butby a different process. Appendix H provides the list ofcensus product codes that relate to the U.S. InternationalTrade Commission Report, ‘‘Synthetic Organic Chemi-cals.’’ Finally, appendixes I and J illustrate the relationshipbetween the 1992 and 1987, and the 1987 and 1992product classes and product codes, respectively.
CHANGES IN PRODUCT CLASSES
For the 1992 Census of Manufactures, data were col-lected on 1,462 product classes compared with 1,446 forthe 1987 census. Table A compares the number of man-ufacturing SIC four-digit industries and census five-digitproduct classes for 1992 and 1987. Tables B and C showthe distribution of industries according to number of prod-uct classes in an industry for manufacturing and mining, respectively. For instance, 130 manufacturing industrieshave only one product class; 91 have two.
