Report of the National YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving Council:

The Council’s year of 1977-78 has experienced growth, involvement, changes, and much deeper concepts

of the need for values education n in our Competitive Swimming and Diving Program.

The participation in our National Championships for the year of more YMCAs than ever before gives us

the impetus to continue the never ending philosophy of “It Starts With Me.” With each individual

involved in any form of competition today, whether it be swimming, diving or the inevitable job of

carrying newspapers there is always a need to realize the actual value that the human being must receive

from the input he applies to doing the best job he knows how, no matter what the circumstances

confronting him be.

The Executive Committee and the Council have adopted these basic philosophies and many more, hoping

that they will enrich the total concept of the swimmer and diver being aware of his individual

performance and the need for his understanding in reaching a goal which is ever seemingly ahead of him.

I cannot find the words to express my personal feelings to all YMCA staff and volunteers who have given

their time and energy to strive to meet those same adopted philosophies that the Council is trying to

project. The Values Education Programs is on the move as are the Coaches Certifications Program and

the Officials Certification Program. Be alert and be ever mindful that there is always a job do and that “It

Stares With Me”. C. Eugene Keltner Chairman
