Volunteer roles/instructions The role of start corral volunteers is to regulate access into the start corrals and also control the forward progress of participants through the start corrals. Each volunteer is assigned to a specifi c corral. Within each corral, volunteers will be assigned by their corral supervisors to one of three positions.

• Sign holder: Hold tall corral signs to make each corral easily identifi able to participants.

• Gatekeeper: Stand at the corral entrance and verify that each participant entering has a valid bib number (i.e. the participant bib matches the corral).

• Rope holder: Form a line stretching from the east to west side of Columbus Drive. Hold the yellow rope to create a barrier between corrals. At the direction of your corral supervisor, slowly move forward as the race starts.

Post-start role Once all participants have crossed the start line, each start corral volunteer will have a post-start role to complete before the end of their shift . Specifi c tasks will be assigned to each corral. This role could include any of the following tasks: assist with the start of a later corral, assist event staff with start line teardown, help to roll-up banners and fencing or pick-up discarded clothing items on Columbus Drive. These items will be donated as part of the event’s sustainability initiative.

Start corral setup The 2019 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffl e will feature a three wave start and start corral process to facilitate a smoother start to the race. Each participant’s start wave is determined by their start corral assignment. All participants have been assigned to one of the following start corrals: Wave 1 (red) – Wheelchair, Elite, A, B, C and D, Wave 2 (blue) – E, F, G and H and Walk Wave (green).

Frequently asked questions You will likely interact with many race participants throughout your volunteer shift . Please do your best to answer any questions they might have. If you do not know the answer to a question, that’s okay. Please direct the participant to a Grant Park information volunteer in an orange vest or to one of the three information tents throughout Grant Park. Refer to the map on pages 9 - 10 for information tent locations.

Which start corral should I be in? Check your bib. The letter listed before your event number indicates your start corral.

Can I run with a friend/change my corral? No, you cannot move to another corral, neither in front of nor behind your assigned corral. This rule is in place to maintain the integrity of the corral pacing, ensure a fluid race start for all participants and prevent corral overcrowding.

I registered for the 2 mile walk, can I switch to the 8K run?No, participants who signed up for the 2 mile walk are not allowed to compete in the 8K run.

I registered for the 8K run, can I switch to the 2 mile walk?Yes, participants who signed up for the 8K run can opt to participate in the 2 mile walk instead of the run. Please note, the walk is an untimed event.

Which gear check should I use and where is it?There are two main gear check facilities for participants, red and blue. Gear check for walk participants will be at the end of the blue gear check and will have green signage. Additionally, participants with white bibs will check their gear at the Elite Club Team Championship tent. Refer to the gear check map on pages 6 - 7 for directions to all gear check locations.

Where is…(start hydration, toilets, etc.)? Refer to the Grant Park map on pages 9 and 10 for all important locations.

How do I attach my timing device?Your MYLAPS Bib Tag timing device is permanently attached to the back of your bib number. Do not remove the timing strip from your bib, fold or damage it in any way. You must wear your bib number on your outermost layer of clothing throughout the entirety of the race to record an official finish time and place. Your time will be recorded from the point at which you cross the timing mats at the start line until you cross the timing mats at the finish line. The MYLAPS Bib Tag is a single-use device that does not need to be returned after the event.

Note timing devices are only applicable to the 8K run event. The 2 mile walk is an untimed event.

I lost my bib. What can I do? Replacement bibs are not available and you cannot access your start corral or the course without an official race bib. If you choose to participate without an official bib, you will be pulled off the race course when spotted without a valid race bib.

I am late, can you take my bag to gear check for me? For security reasons, volunteers CANNOT take baggage for a participant under any circumstances. Bags must be checked at a gear check tent. Any bags left unattended will be removed from Grant Park and will not be made available to the participant.

I am late, what should I do?Do not panic. If you are in Wave 1 and the field has not advanced, you can start at the back of Corral D. If Wave 1 is advancing, runners can wait and start in Corral H.

Where can I get safety pins or other runner supplies? You can find safety pins and other supplies at the pre-race supplies tent near each gear check facility.

What amenities are available on course? Two aid stations are located along the course. Each aid station offers Gatorade® Endurance Formula (lemon-lime), water, medical support and toilet facilities.

Biofreeze Pain Relief Spray will be available at the Biofreeze Relief Zone at Mile 4 (Harrison Street and Wabash Ave.). Apply Biofreeze Pain Relief Spray to alleviate soreness and help you to take on the final mile of the race. Biofreeze personnel will be on-site to apply the product on participants.

The 2 mile walk will have one on-course aid station offering water and toilet facilities.

Contingency/emergency plans Many contingency plans are in place to handle an unplanned event such as diversion of the race route or adverse weather conditions. In the case of such an event, look to your volunteer supervisor for instructions. Medical personnel and volunteers are on site to handle any medical incidents that may occur. If you witness a person in need of medical attention, please call 312.781.6408 or 9-1-1 immediately.

Event Alert System The Event Alert System communicates the status of course conditions to participants, volunteers and spectators leading up to and on race day. All participants, volunteers and spectators should familiarize themselves with the Event Alert System color indicators, remain alert for directions from race officials, announcers, and volunteer leaders and take precautions to prepare properly for varying conditions on race day. Look for EAS communication in the start/finish areas, Grant Park, aid stations and via public announcements.

Public safety information You can help maintain public safety in a few simple steps:

• Whatever your role on race day, be aware and check the area around you – observe runners, spectators and general public. Be vigilant.

• If you are at an aid station make sure that only your supplies are there and that no one has the opportunity to add to them or tamper with them.

• Keep a look out for bags or packages that appear to be unattended. If in doubt, ask!• Do not store or hold bags or packages for someone you do not know.• Report anything or anyone suspicious to your team leader or a police/security officer.• Be good neighbors and respect the people and community around you; pick up after

yourself and keep the noise to a minimum during early hours.• Help keep the city and parks clean. Please use waste, recycle and compost stations.

The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle works with the City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management and Communications throughout all the stages of our planning process. These agencies work in tandem to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the Shamrock Shuffle.

Prohibited items Wheeled devices are not permitted on the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K run or 2 mile walk course by anyone other than registered and authorized wheelchair participants, duo team participants and authorized course marshals on bicycles. Prohibited wheeled devices include non-registered wheelchairs and handcycles, baby joggers, strollers, skateboards, rollerblades and bicycles.

The use of music devices (e.g. iPods) is permitted during the race; however, in keeping with USATF rules for championship races, athletes competing for overall awards or prize money may not use music or communication devices during the event.

The use of cell phones, video devices, cameras or similar devices by participants while in the event is strongly discouraged, and event officials reserve the right to disqualify any participant using such devices who poses a safety hazard on the course.

Additional prohibited items on the 8K run and 2 mile walk course include, but are not limited to: large bags (backpacks, suitcases and rolling bags), hard-sided coolers, costumes covering the face, any non-forming bulky outfits extending beyond the perimeter of the body, props and non-running equipment, pets/animals (except service animals that are trained to perform specific work or tasks for a person with a disability), alcoholic beverages, illegal substances, chairs, weapons, remote controlled aircrafts and drones, Camelbaks® and any type of hydration backpack. For the avoidance of doubt, fuel belts and hand-held water bottles are allowed.

Lost & found Lost & found items will be collected throughout the day and available for pick-up until 11:30 a.m. at the Jackson and Harrison Information Tent locations and until 1:30 p.m. at the Post-Race Party Information Tent. Unclaimed items will be taken back to the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle office (135 S. LaSalle Street) where they can be picked up in person starting Monday, March 25 after 10 a.m. Call 312.904.9814 or send an email titled “lost & found” to [email protected] to inquire about lost items. Any items that are unclaimed as of Friday, April 19 will no longer be available for retrieval.

Lost child/Person Keep child/parent with you and stay in the location where child/parent is found. Call 312.781.6415 for further instruction.
