WELCOME TO ‘HERITAGE WEEK’ IN COUNTY DONEGAL
People from heritage organisations, community groups, museums, heritage centres and Cultural Services, Donegal County Council have come together again this year to produce a great Heritage Week events programme in County Donegal. Their tremendous effort and hard work help to raise awareness of, generate pride in and encourage the conservation of our natural, built and cultural heritage. A record 124 Heritage Week events are already planned across the county and County Donegal is set to be the county with the most Heritage Week events per head of population in Ireland again this year. This year’s theme is ‘It’s in Your Nature’ highlighting the connections between people, place and our natural heritage. National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and Local Authority Heritage Officers. At national government level, Heritage is now part of the newly-reconfigured Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht. The exciting possibilities presented by the ‘Creative Ireland’ programme also present opportunities for much-needed investment in our heritage, arts and culture. Investing in our heritage helps to raise awareness, foster interest and generate pride in our heritage, convey our sense of place and identity as well as attract visitors, support jobs and sustain local economies.
The County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council has compiled this booklet highlighting events taking place for ‘National Heritage Week’ in County Donegal. Participants are advised to confirm details of events in advance. Contact details have been identified for each of the events listed. I hope that you will support the efforts of the many individuals and groups who have organised events for National Heritage Week in County Donegal and that you will encourage other people to engage with, and advocate for, the heritage in our communities.
Joseph Gallagher Heritage Officer
Updates on ‘National Heritage Week’ events are available on:www.heritageweek.ie
A day-to-day listing of events is available in the centre pages of this booklet.
Cover Photograph:Glenveagh National Park is the second largest of Ireland’s six National Parks and is a great place to explore our natural heritage. Its mountains, lakes, glens and woods provide a variety of habitats for our flora and fauna (that includes the Red Deer and the Golden Eagle). Glenveagh National Park is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) designated for the protection and conservation of habitats and species important in a European context and is a Special Protection Area (SPA) designated for the protection of endangered species of wild birds.
Grianghraf ar an chlúdach:Tá Páirc Náisiúnta Ghleann Bheatha ar an dara ceann is mó as sé cinn de Pháirceanna Náisiúnta in Éirinn agus is áit iontach í leis an oidhreacht nádúrtha a thaiscéaladh. Tá gnáthóga éagsúla ar fáil don fhlóra agus don fhána (an Fia Rua agus an tIolar Fíréan ina measc) sna sléibhte, sna lochanna, sna gleannta agus sna coillte atá ann. Is Limistéar Speisialta Caomhantais í Páirc Náisiúnta Ghleann Bheatha atá ceaptha le gnáthóga agus speicis atá tábhachtach i gcomhthéacs Eorpach a chosaint agus a chaomhnú agus is Limistéar Speisialta Cosanta í atá ceaptha le speicis d’éanacha fiáine a chosaint.

Fáilte go dtí an tSeachtain Oidhreachta i gContae Dhún na nGall
Tá daoine i ndiaidh teacht le chéile arís i mbliana ó eagraíochtaí oidhreachta, coistí pobail, iarsmalanna, ionaid oidhreachta agus Seirbhísí Cultúrtha, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall, le clár iontach imeachtaí a chur le chéile do Sheachtain na hOidhreachta i gContae Dhún na nGall. Cuidíonn a gcuid iarrachtaí agus obair chrua le haird an phobail a dhíriú ar an oidhreacht nádúrtha, thógtha agus chultúrtha atá againn, chomh maith le bród a chothú aisti agus daoine a spreagadh le í a chaomhnú. Tá 124 imeacht beartaithe ar fud an chontae le linn Sheachtain na hOidhreachta, an líon is mó riamh, agus tá cuma ar an scéal gur i gContae Dhún na nGall, arís eile, a bheas an líon is mó imeachtaí in aghaidh gach duine den daonra. Is é téama na bliana seo ‘Is é do nádúrsa é’, agus béim ar na ceangail atá ann idir an duine, a cheantar agus a oidhreacht nádúrtha. Is iad an Chomhairle Oidhreachta agus Oifigigh Oidhreachta na nÚdarás Áitiúil a chomhordaíonn an tSeachtain Oidhreachta Náisiúnta. Ag leibhéal náisiúnta an rialtais, tá cúrsaí Oidhreachta anois mar chuid de roinn ath-eagraithe, mar atá, An Roinn Cultúir, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta. Tá deiseanna iontacha ar fáil fosta ón chlár ‘Éire Ildánach’ chun infheistíocht, a bhfuil géarghá léi, a sholáthar dár n-oidhreacht, dár n-ealaíona agus dár gcultúr. Nuair a dhéantar infheistíocht san oidhreacht cuidíonn sin le feasacht a ardú, suim a spreagadh agus bród a chothú san oidhreacht, agus cuidíonn sé lenár bhféiniúlacht féin a chur in iúl, chomh maith le cuairteoirí a mhealladh, tacú le poist agus geilleagair áitiúla a chothabháil.
Tá an leabhrán seo, a thugann spléachadh ar na himeachtaí a bheas ar siúl i gContae Dhún na nGall le linn na Seachtaine Oidhreachta Náisiúnta, curtha i dtoll a chéile ag Oifig Oidhreachta Chontae Dhún na nGall, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall. Iarrtar ar rannpháirtithe sonraí na n-imeachtaí a dheimhniú roimh ré. Tá sonraí teagmhála curtha ar fáil do na himeachtaí atá liostaithe. Tá súil agam go dtacóidh tú le hiarrachtaí na ndaoine aonaracha agus na n-eagraíochtaí sin a bhfuil imeachtaí eagraithe acu do Sheachtain Náisiúnta na hOidhreachta i gContae Dhún na nGall agus go spreagfaidh tú daoine eile le páirt a ghlacadh i gcúrsaí oidhreachta laistigh den phobal agus labhairt amach ar a son.
Seosamh Ó Gallachóir Oifigeach Oidhreachta

This third book follows ‘Star Shell Reflections, 1914-1915’ and ‘War, Hellish War, 1916-1918’ and is a truly unique and timeless diary published for the first time 100 years on by his granddaughter Barbara McClune. St. John’s Point during WWII: SW Donegal was significantly affected by the events of WWII / ‘The Emergency’ . . . they even left a mark in the landscape. Come along and learn more about this sad but interesting time in our history. A number of things that have marked the landscape in South West Donegal and have left us a lingering reminder of World War II. There is Local Defence Force’s Lookout Post at St. John’s Point, from where volunteers kept an eye on the unfolding drama offshore; there is the ‘EIRE’ sign at the end of ‘The Point’ that was made from whitewashed stones which could be seen from the air by passing aircraft. These and many other things have an intertwined and fascinating story to tell.Date: Saturday, August 26

Stone Age Tools Exhibition: This is the first exhibition of flints, blades and other stone tools discovered in a submerged Stone Age site next to Greencastle Golf Club. The discovery of prehistoric tools and peat along the western shore of Lough Foyle suggests that hunter-gatherers lived in a settlement in North Donegal during the Stone Age. The settlement, one of Ireland’s earliest, was probably founded in 7,000 B.C., during the early Mesolithic era, according to Kieran Westley, a researcher at the Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Ulster. His findings are published in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology.

www.europeanheritagedays.com
European Heritage Days (EHDs), a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and theEuropean Commission, are the most widely celebrated participatory cultural eventsshared by the citizens of Europe.
Over 70,000 events are organised every year in order to help raise awareness ofEurope's common heritage and the continuous need for its protection.
This year we are celebrating the intrinsic relationship between peopleand nature under the common theme of Heritage and Nature.
European Heritage Days 2017 highlight people's relationship with their immediate environment, show the way nature and people are
intimately interrelated and draw attention to the need for preserving nature, heritage and landscape for
future generations.

Share Your Story / Inis do Scéal: Come to the Folk Village and view some of the earliest maps of Glencolmcille! See how the landscape has changed over the last 170 years and share your memories and stories about past ways of life. The earliest detailed maps made over 170 years ago. They recorded places on the cusp of great changes (driven by famine, industry and the agricultural ‘improvements’ of landlords), which would irrevocably alter the ancient landscape. While the appearance of the area has changed, earlier ways remain preserved in old placenames and memories of past farming practices. Dr. William Megarry and students from the School of Natural & Built Environment, Queen’s University Belfast want to hear and record your memories.
97 OIDEAS GEAL, GLEANN CHOLM CILLE
What Makes Landscapes Special? The ancient windswept landscape of Gleann Cholm Cille is a special place, but what makes some landscapes special? A talk by Prof. Keith Lilley and Dr. Mark Gardiner, Queen’s University Belfast. Places and landscapes evolve over many millions of years. Yet, it is usually the activities of the more recent past which give a place a sense of character. From the ancient tombs of the first farmers to the churches, stations and paths of the Early Christian Period, the past is still uniquely visible in Glencolmcille, alongside the more recent changes of the last 150 years. This talk will look at the special character of the area and explore how it can be preserved in the future.

Back Photograph:Lime kiln in Tully, near Dungloe in west Donegal. There were circa 5,000 lime kilns known to have existed in the nineteenth-century rural landscape of County Donegal. As part of the implementation of the County Donegal Heritage Plan, Donegal County Council and The Heritage Council have commissioned a study of lime kilns in County Donegal that will investigate the distribution of lime kilns; identify their forms, components and construction; develop a typology; document specific case studies; suggest possible conservation measures and produce the text and illustrations for a booklet to assist with their interpretation and conservation. If you have information on an interesting lime kiln in your area, please contact the County Donegal Heritage Office.
