This display houses the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses, alongside a signifi cant collection of George Crosses, telling the extraordinary stories of the people who have been awarded these medals.
Accompanying the stories of those awarded the medals is artwork, fi lm and photography exploring the concept of bravery and what motivates people to undertake acts of heroism.

Turning Points 1934–1945Permanent Exhibition, Level 2
Witnesses to WarPermanent Exhibition, Level 0
Second World War
Witnesses to War presents nine important objects from our collection spanning over a century, highlighting IWM’s role to tell the stories of confl ict. This dramatic display features a Harrier jet and Spitfi re plane, suspended above a V2 rocket. Also on display is a T-34 tank and a 13-Pounder Gun from the First World War which became a memorial for the men who fought with it. Joining them is a Reuters Land Rover damaged by a rocket attack in Gaza.
First World War GalleriesPermanent Exhibition, Level 0
First World War
From Britain and Europe after the Second World War through to the Cold War and the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, Peace and Security reveals how confl icts have been fought and communities divided in places such as Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan from 1945 to the present day.
Curiosities of WarPermanent Exhibition, Level 3
See some of the more unexpected objects from our collections. Items on display range from a section of the bar where the Dambusters crew used to drink through to a sofa which troops in Afghanistan made out of HESCObastion fencing.
Discover the story of the First World War through theeyes of the British people and the Empire, both on the home front and the fi ghting fronts. On display are objects from IWM’s collections including weapons, uniforms, diaries, keepsakes, fi lm and art.
See how the war started, why it continued, how the Allies won and its impact on people’s lives across the globe. Walk through a recreated trench with a Sopwith Camel plane swooping low overhead as a Mark V Tank looms above you.
