Running HardIt was a hot sunny day and we lined up for cross country. Iwas hot and tired waiting. After the girls went and the boyswent it was our turn. The girls were finishing and we linedup. When I heard the clap I sped off like lightning.

I got really tired. I heard my mum cheering. When I heardher I went much faster. I went so fast when I went down thehill. At the end I went as fast as lightning. A boy overtookme but I was too fast, I overtook him. I just beat him.

    Understanding Numeracy: Starting to Learn

You are your child's first and most important teacher.By showing a positive attitude towards mathematics, you will help to foster your child's interest inmathematics. Counting is the beginning of numeracylearning. Numbers are all around us. Show your childhow you use them, everywhere, any time. Your child'steacher will want to know about the things you do athome to support your child's numeracy learning. Thiswill help the teacher to better understand your child'snumeracy ideas.

    Understanding Numeracy: Understanding the

LearningChildren learn by using equipment, drawing picturesand diagrams, and talking about what they are doing.Encouraging children to use their memory and to workthings out in their heads helps their development.Children go through broad, overlapping stages in theirnumeracy learning. Ask your child's teacher to talk withyou about those stages. Children will be exploringmany ways to work out problems. Talking about how

they work out their own problems and listening toothers' strategies helps their understandings.

Understanding Numeracy: Maintaining theLearningAs children reach senior primary school, their ideas innumeracy become more complex, so it is still veryimportant that they continue to use equipment, drawpictures and diagrams, and talk about what they aredoing. Children need to be looking for patterns andrelationships between numbers and to be generalisingtheir ideas. Showing an interest, encouraging, andhaving high expectations that children will succeed in

mathematics are powerful motivators for children'sachievements in mathematics.
