‘Driving the Economy through Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ Emerging Agenda for Technology Management

Department of Management StudiesIndian Institute of ScienceBangalore 560 012, India

18–20 July 2012Venue:J N Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of ScienceBangalore – 560 012, India

Department of Management StudiesThe Department of Management Studies at the Indian Institute of Science, IISc, is one of the oldest departments of management in India. It has been running post graduate programmes and the doctoral programme since the mid-1950s. Located in the premier research institute of higher learning, it positions itself to train students in futuristic areas like technology management, business analytics, and policy analysis. The origin of the department can be traced back to 1947 when the section of Economics and Social Sciences was setup. This pioneering step was largely a result of the long-term vision of J.N. Tata, who had sown the seeds of management education and research in the country. This vision was given substance by the resolution of the Indian Institute of Science to establish a “...Philosophical and Educational Department, including methods of education, ethics and psychology, Indian history and archeology, statistics and economics, and comparative philology.”

Indian Institute of ScienceThe Indian Institute of Science, IISc, owes its foundation to the practical vision and insightful dreams of a great visionary, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. Ever since its inception, the Institute has laid balanced emphasis on the pursuit of basic knowledge in science and engineering, as well as on the application of its research findings for industrial and social benefits. IISc is engaged in higher learning and advanced research at the cutting edge of science and technology. The Institute has a highly qualified and internationally acclaimed faculty numbering 450 and a student strength of around 2700. The Institute’s faculty continues to be very active in research and maintains a high annual publication output. The research findings cover a wide spectrum of scientific investigations. The Institute has introduced many innovations in teaching and research that have contributed to the growth of science and technology in the country.

This forum provides a platform for invited distinguished CEOs and directors of technology-intensive organisations to deliberate on mega trends of technology creating opportunity for new business and services. They have been specially invited from organisations representing India’s large public sector enterprises, multinationals from USA, Germany, Korea as well as some thought leaders from DRDO and national laboratories.

The invitees will describe the global landscape with a focus on driving the economy through technology, innovation, and

development. The CEOs will reflect and recognize the changes that are sweeping the world and will define the agenda of how different economies need to respond to these changes. Such insights about technology-driven impacts on people, organisations, and society at large will help policy initiatives at the government level, investment decisions at the organisation level, and exploring opportunities and making careers at the individual level.

The invited speakers include technology & organisational leaders from Bharath Earth Movers Ltd., GE Jack Welch R&D Centre, SAP Labs, Lapp (Germany), Hora, Phoenix Contact, HP, IBM, Airbus, DRDO, CSIR labs, and CEOs of medium scale enterprises. Prof. Otthein Herzog

of Jacobs University Bremen, Germany will anchor CEOs conclave.

Innovation valuation conclave is one of its kind effort to bring all significant partners in the forum to recognise different interests and perspectives in evaluating an idea, innovation, product, a procedure, a patent, and an organisation-driven innovation pipeline. This event intends to bring together academic innovators, scientists working in different R&D labs, venture capitalists, bankers, developers of invention eco systems, management consultants, and policy makers.

Prof. J.J.Chanaron, Grenoble School of Business, France will anchor this conclave and summarise the deliberations for defining an agenda for future action. The other speakers are: Dr. Shailendra Vyakarnam of University of Cambridge, Prof. KPJ Reddy of IISc, Mr. Vivek Kulkarni of Brickwork Ratings, Mr. Amarjeet Singh of India Bulls, Mr. Deepam Mishra of i2 India Ventures, and Mr. Surendranath Warrier of Optimal Strategix.

This is another unique initiative of this international event to bring together innovators from diverse disciplines. The purpose of this event is to demonstrate ‘real technologies’ which are peer reviewed and accepted for their commercial application and economic viability. Direct interaction with the inventors and conversations with scientists will benefit both the delegates and the scientists. The selected innovations are mostly from different departments of IISc. However, this is not limited to only the campus initiative and will include innovations and technologies from DRDO, ISRO, national R&D laboratories, public sector organisations, startups, and Fortune and Forbes Global 2000 companies. The exhibition is expected to attract venture capitalists to explore the possibilities of funding, incubation, and commercialisation.
