Masthead - The masthead is the visual branding of the
title and allows the magazine cover to be recognised by
the typical readers and may attract new readers with the
visual aesthetic. The vivid red allows the magazine cover
to be noticeable from a distance. The spacing andshadow of the font is indicative of the progression of
typography in contemporary media. This type of font
wouldnt typically have been used in printed media,
however here it is used to allow readers to distinguish
the type of information that the magazine publishes.
Selling line - The selling line is a condenseddescription of the titles main marketing point.
The magazine has been designated The
ultimate buyersguide for men . The selling line
then makes readers aware that the majority of
the magazinescontent will revolve around male
products or items of a male interest. The selling
line is the smallest font on the cover of the
magazine which suggests that Complex
magazine is a well established buyersguide formen and typical or new readers should be aware
of this. The inclusion of fashion designer and
entrepreneur Marc Ecko reinforces the notion of
the magazine being the ultimate buyers guide
for men as it displays contemporary fashion and
the latest trends for men.

Left Third- It is vital that the left of themagazine cover contains enticing information
especially when the magazine is displayed in
western countries where the entire cover of
the magazine is not displayed on shelves.
Here, the left third of the magazine displays ta
cover line that might be considered a useful
tip by men. It is also important that the
masthead of the magazine is visible to ensure
that if the cover line of the left third of the
magazine does not attract readers, the
credibility of the magazine will do so.
Cover Lines- The cover line on the left third
of the magazine cover uses numbers in a
digital font format. This reinforces the
modernity of the magazine and refers to the
number of contemporary styles the
magazine contains.
The sans serif text influences the syntagmatic
meaning of the magazine cover. The
anchorage text creates a link with the typical
readers of the magazine. The anchorage textand cover lines are the same font type: san
serif within the magazine cover. The
combination of paradigms creates the
message that all the cover lines allude to a
similar content that attracts the readers of
Complex.

Model Credit - It tends
top be unusual for a
model credit to be
placed on a magazine
cover as the main image
is usually a person, that
will be easily recognised
by most readers.
However at the time of
publishing (2009) Zooey
Deschanel did not have
the notability as an
actress that she
currently has.
The model credit is
followed with the
indication that Zooey
Deschanel has the
potential to blow up
alluding to her ability to
improve and gain
credibility as an actress.
Cover Lines- The
cover lines
dispersed on the
magazine cover
refer to the content
of the magazine.
The cover lines on
Complex magazine
indicate that the
content has been
produced for male
readers.

Cover lines are placed
around the main image
on the magazine without
detracting from the main
image. They are usually
in varied colours but
utilise the colour palette
of he magazine cover. In
this case, the colourpalette of the magazine
is sky blue, yellow and
black. The range of vivid
colours create a visual
aesthetic that draws the
readers attention to
certain aspects of the
cover lines.
The cover lines consist of
longer sentences as
opposed to brief text and
so the readers attention
is drawn to specific
sections of the cover
lines. Here, the readers
attention is drawn to the
four words cheat on
your girl. Automatically,
without any previous
information the reader ismade aware of the
slightly humorous yet
taboo articles within the
magazine.

The colour palette consists of paradigms that have been
selected to create a link throughout the magazine cover.
For example, the colour palette of the cover lines and
anchorage text consists of yellow, blue and black.
The choices of the colouring are
interconnecting and striking whichcatches peoples attention easily. The
syntagm of the magazine cover is
presented as being used as a signifier
for the most important parts of the
cover lines. The cover lines that allude
to the most reader enticing content are
highlighted in bright colours. Here, it is
evident that the paradigmatic features
of the anchorage text have beenutilised as signifiers to the readers.
