WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney’s pick of Rep. Paul Ryan for the Republican presidential ticket brings clarity to the stark election-year choice for voters — the competing Democratic and Republican visions about the size and role of the federal government in Americans’ lives.

Ryan is synonymous with his revolutionary budget that slashes spending for safety-net programs for the poor, remakes the Medicare health care program for the elderly, and cuts personal and corporate taxes while pushing the deficit down to a manageable level. It turns the tea party movement’s dream of a scaled-back, less involved government into hard-core reality.

“America is more than just a place ... it’s an idea. It’s the only country founded on an idea,” Ryan said Saturday in Virginia as Romney introduced his vice presidential choice. “Our rights come from nature and God, not government. We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcomes.”

With Romney’s embrace of Ryan, it is now the Romney-Ryan budget and blueprint for the future.

President Barack Obama, who repeatedly talks up the November election as a profound choice for the country, has rejected the Ryan approach as “thinly veiled social Darwinism.” The Democrat and former community organizer sees government as a place with enough resources to help the less fortunate.

The Ryan budget, Obama said in April, “is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who’s willing to work for it; a place where prosperity doesn’t trickle down from the top but grows outward from the heart of the middle class.”

and gubernatorial races. The outcome in November will have far-reaching implications for looming fiscal crises in the year’s final days.

On the grassroots level, the selection of the 42-year-old Ryan, one of the House’s intellectual conservatives and Budget Committee chairman, energizes a Republican base wary of the Massachusetts governor and architect of that Democratic-leaning state’s health insurance program dubbed Romneycare.

Conservatives, from The Wall Street Journal editorial page to the rank and file, had been clamoring in recent days for Ryan. The timing of the announcement came as polls showed Obama with a narrow advantage and the number of undecided voters diminishing, underscoring the need for Romney to act fast.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” Sal Russo, a longtime Republican operative and founder of the Tea Party Express, a well-funded wing of the populist movement, said in an interview. “He’s willing to go out there and tackle tough issues. The American people want somebody to make the tough choices.”

Russo said his organization had polled its 17,000 members, and Ryan and freshman Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida were the favorites for the No. 2 spot on the Republican ticket.

The conservative reward of Ryan also carries a significant political risk — and Democrats wasted no time in making it a top talking point.

The Ryan budget would scrap the current Medicare system that the nation’s seniors have enjoyed for decades in favor of a voucher program for those under 55 today. Starting in 10 years, the plan also calls

for gradually raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67.

Democrats immediately sounded the alarm about the implications of changing the popular entitlement program, a warning certain to resonate in battleground states such as Florida, Iowa and Pennsylvania — states with the heaviest concentration of those 65 and over.

“In selecting Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has crystalized the contrast of this election,” said Rod Smith, chairman of the Florida Democratic Party. “Ryan is the architect of Romney’s extreme budget plan which would end Medicare as we know it, increasing the health care costs for Florida’s seniors by thousands every year.”

The state’s Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who faces a stiff challenge in his bid for another term, quickly posted

on Facebook.“Romney VP pick bad for

seniors. Signals an end to Medicare as we know it. My commitment to Medicare never stronger,” Nelson said.

Democrats are certain to replay past Republican criticism of the Ryan budget.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and one-time Republican presidential candidate, referred to Ryan’s plan to overhaul Medicare as “right-wing social engineering.” He later apologized.

Florida Rep. Connie Mack, who is favored to win the Republican Senate nomination in Tuesday’s primary, said in April of the Ryan budget: “You know that budget was a joke, doesn’t balance the budget for years.” An aide later clarified that Mack was referring to the voting process in which Republican-passed

legislation in the House goes nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Mack’s deficit-cutting plan calls for cutting one penny from every federal dollar spent.

Republicans see Ryan, a Roman Catholic from Wisconsin who could appeal to blue-collar voters, as an appealing complement to Romney, a Mormon and multimillionaire.

But Ryan has tangled with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and others in the church over his budget, which would cut Medicaid health care coverage for the poor, food stamps that offer assistance to purchase groceries, Pell Grants for college students, and a host of other programs that directly help the poorer Americans.

Ryan had said the budget is based on Catholic social teaching. But in a letter, the

Rev. Thomas J. Reese called that nonsense.

“I am afraid that Chairman Ryan’s budget reflects the values of his favorite philosopher Ayn Rand rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Reese, a Jesuit priest and senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. “Survival of the fittest may be OK for social Darwinists but not for followers of the gospel of compassion and love.”

Romney insisted on Saturday that Ryan is intent on creating opportunities for all Americans.

“Paul is in public life for all the right reasons — not to advance his personal ambitions but to advance the ideals of freedom and justice, and to increase opportunity and prosperity to people of every class and faith, every age and ethnic background,” Romney said.

La final entre Mexico contra Brazil inicio a las 7 AM tiempo del Paci-fico en donde a los primeros 30 segundos del partido Or-ibe Peralta de la seleccion Mexicana abria el marcador y daba confianza a sus com-paneros mientras los brasile-nos quedaban sorprendidos.

El primer tiempo fue claramente dominado por la seleccion Mexicana que apretaba muy bien a los ju-gadores Brasilenos no dan-doles espacio para jugar el esperado Joga Bonito. Sin embargo, la verde amarela empezo a desiquilibrar para finales del primer tiempo en donde a falta de precision no conseguian el empate.

Ya para el Segundo tiempo, los brasilenos empezaban a jugar el todo por el todo pero la defensiva Mexicana se convirtio como una muralla china que no dejaba pasar ninguna pelota. La deses-peracion aumentaba minuto a minuto entre los brasilenos la cual generaba mas oportu-nidades para el tri tal como el tiro de esquina en donde de nuevo Oribe Peralta salio de la nada para rematar y al-canzar un 2-0.

Pero los sudamericanos no se darian por vencidos tan facilmente ya que alred-edor de los 80 minutos, Hulk

sorprendia a Corona con un remate cruzado dandole es-peranza a la verde amarela que desafortunadamente re-acciono ya muy tarde.

Sin duda alguna, los ju-gadores Mexicanos jugaron como verdaderos guerreros dejando todo en la cancha. Han representado a Mexi-co de muy buena manera y mostrado a sus rivales que

ahi muy Buena calidad fu-tbolistica y buena organ-isacion del parte del cuerpo tecnico.

En tanto a Brasil, habra mucho trabajo por hacer ya que en dos anos mas estos guerreros mexicanos y mu-chos mas lucharan por al-canzar el sueno de cualquier jugador de futbol , la copa mundial.

cer game of the London Olympic Games was played at the magnificent Wembley stadium, on Saturday August 11, 2012. The soccer final between Brazil and Mexico started at 7 AM Pacific time. During the first 30 seconds of the game, the Mexican player, Oribe Peralta, scored the first goal giving his team confidence and surprising the Brazilian team.

Clearly, the first half was dominated by the Mexican players who pressured the Brazilians by not giving them space to play the ex-pected “Joga Bonito” (play beautifully). However, the Brazilian team began to dis-turb the Mexicans during the end of the first time but the lack of precision did not get them to score.

By the second half, the Brazilians gave it all, but the Mexican defense turned into a Chinese wall that did not let any balls through. The nervousness increased

minute by minute among the Brazilians, and it was their nervousness what generated more opportunities for el “Tri” Mexico, such as the cor-ner kick where again Oribe Peralta came out of nowhere to score the second goal and finish the game with a 2-0.

But the South Americans would not give up so easily and around the 90th minute, Hulk surprised Corona with a diagonal shot giving hope to Brazil who unfortunately reacted too late.

Undoubtedly, the Mexican players played like warriors leaving everything on the field. Mexico was well rep-resented and showed their rivals what good quality soc-cer is as well as what a good coaching body is.

As for Brazil, there will be much work to do because in two years these Mexican warriors and many oth-ers will fight to achieve the dream of any soccer player, the World Cup Champion-ship.

By Jacquie Marroquin, At the end of May I began to receive phone

calls from a Washington D.C. area code and some private numbers. At first it was just in the evenings, then I began to receive calls throughout the day. I don’t normally answer calls from numbers I do not recognize and they did not leave a voice message. Curiosity finally got the best of me in early July, so I answered a couple of those calls and learned it was the Democratic Congressional Cam-paign Committee (DCCC) and President Obama’s reelection campaign that had been calling me.

The call from President Obama’s cam-paign went something like this: An overly enthusiastic voice asked, “May I speak to Jacquie?” Jacquie, I am calling you because we are in urgent need of your support.” I pa-tiently listened to the caller as she explained how crucial the November election was and how valuable my financial support would be to take the House of Representatives back from the Republican majority, keep the Sen-ate majority and to ensure President Obama is reelected. I listened to her entire, well re-hearsed, and urgently delivered script.

When she finally paused to ask how much I would contribute to President Obama’s re-election campaign, I politely explained that in spite of the President having my absolute support, I would not contribute financially to his campaign. Not because I was financially unable to (in fact I recently got a nice raise), but because I refused to financially sup-port an Administration that has utilized the failed ‘Secure Communities’ (S-Comm) pro-gram that has normalized an indiscriminant mechanism for putting a record number of immigrants on the path to deportation with virtually no oversight from Congress and an ever increasing and unquestioned budget.

Since the federal immigration program S-Comm secretly began in 2008, the Obama administration has deported more undocu-mented people than President George W. Bush did in his eight years in office. Origi-nally designed to detain and deport immi-grants who commit serious violent crimes, it has ballooned to one of the most costly, inef-ficient and dangerous immigration enforce-ment programs we have seen.

With over 1 million people deported, at a taxpayer cost of $23,000 per person and thousands of immigrants detained in for-profit detention centers across the country at a taxpayer cost of $5.5 million per day, this program is easily and unquestioningly funded by Congress with little to no over-sight in spite of report after report of its mas-sive failure. It’s a failure because, according to the Department of Homeland Security’s own numbers, 70% of people deported do not fall under the original intent of the pro-gram. Instead, they are the immigrants who are arrested for minor crimes: misdemean-ors, traffic violations and minor citations. It is important to note that the people ar-rested were not always convicted in a court of law as the U.S. Constitution guarantees. These are our families, our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends, students and vic-tims and witnesses of crime. They are hard-working people who are the fabric of our communities—people, who, for all intents and purposes, are as American as any one born on U.S. soil.

For the last couple of years I have been receiving heartbreaking e-mails, text mes-sages, tweets, and Facebook appeals asking for $5, for $10, or any possible amount to help bail out Undocumented and Unafraid DREAMers arrested for publicly denounc-ing S-Comm. Arrested for publicly saying what I believe so deeply at my core, “Stop separating families! Stop the destroying our communities! End S-Comm and 287(g) programs NOW!” To date I have contributed over $150 dollars to the organizations work-ing to defend arrested DREAMers. Unfor-tunately there is no doubt I will continue to contribute more money as long as President Obama’s Administration continues to im-plement S-Comm across the entire country next year. And as long as that is the case – those are my hard earned dollars the Presi-dent’s reelection campaign will not receive from me, no matter how many “urgent” phone calls and e-mails I receive.

As an immigrant there is no question where my financial contributions will go.

La llamada de la campaña del presidente Obama fue algo como esto: Una voz demasia-da entusiasta preguntó: “¿Puedo hablar con Jacquie?” Jacquie, te estoy llamando porque estamos en la urgente necesidad de tu apoyo,” escuche pacientemente a la per-sona que llamaba al explicar lo importante que era la elección de noviembre y lo valioso que sería mi ayuda financiera para tomar la Cámara de Representantes de regreso de la mayoría republicana, de mantener la may-oría en el Senado y de asegurar que el Presi-dente Obama sea reelegido. Escuche todo su, bien ensayado y entregado con urgencia, discurso.

Cuando finalmente se detuvo a pregun-tar cuánto iba a contribuir a la campaña de reelección del presidente Obama, yo educa-damente le explique que a pesar de que el Presidente tiene mi apoyo absoluto, no podía contribuir económicamente a su campaña. No porque sea financieramente incapaz (de hecho, recientemente obtuve un buen au-mento de sueldo), sino porque me niego a apoyar financieramente una Adminis-tración que ha utilizado el fallido programa de ‘Comunidades Seguras’ (S-Comm) que ha normalizado un mecanismo indiscrimi-nado de la puesta de un número récord de inmigrantes en el camino a la deportación, prácticamente sin supervisión del Congreso y con un presupuesto cada vez mayor e in-cuestionable.

Desde que el programa federal de inmi-gración S-Comm comenzó en secreto en 2008, el gobierno de Obama ha deportado a más personas indocumentadas que el presi-dente George W. Bush en sus ocho años en el cargo. Originalmente diseñado para detener y deportar a los inmigrantes que cometan delitos graves, que se ha convertido en uno de los programas de aplicación más costo-sos, ineficientes y peligrosos de inmigración que hemos visto.

Con más de 1 millón de personas depor-tadas, a un costo para el contribuyente de $ 23,000 por persona y miles de inmigrantes detenidos en centros de detención con fines de lucro en todo el país a un costo para el contribuyente de $ 5.5 millones por día, este programa es fácil y sin cuestionamientos fi-nanciado por el Congreso con poco a ningún control a pesar de que informe tras informe reportan su gran fracaso. Voy a apoyar a mis hermanos y hermanas en la gira ”No Documentos No Miedo”, cuyo objetivo es viajar a través de los estados de Texas, Luisi-ana, Mississippi y Georgia con la valentía de “salir” como indocumentados y en camino a Carolina del Norte el 3 de septiembre para la Convención Nacional Demócrata.

I will support my brothers and sisters on the No Papers No Fear tour whose goal is to travel through states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia to bravely “come out” as undocu-mented while on their way to the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina on September 3rd.

I will offer financial support to bail out the undocumented protesters arrested during Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Federal trail in Arizona that alleges he and his department have in-stitutionalized racially profiling Latinos in their jurisdiction.

I will share the stories of undocumented youth who infiltrated detention centers after being arrested and are gathering and distrib-uting the stories of countless other detainees who are supposed to be a low priority for de-tention and deportation.

There is no end in sight to these night-mares because of the insidious link between

for-profit detention centers and federal im-migration enforcement programs that funnel millions of taxpayer dollars into businesses that profit on the backs of detainees housed in their detention centers.

I have my own urgent message for the Dem-ocratic Congressional Campaign Committee and President Obama: Until my family stops being the target of your failed immigration enforcement programs, I will not send you a dime. This is a message that the President and his advisors should take seriously be-cause although you might take my vote for granted in California, you need my financial contribution for campaigns in battleground states like Florida, Nevada and Ohio where every dollar matters. While I firmly believe a Mitt Romney presidency would be a di-saster to this country—the larger disasters are communities terrorized by immigration enforcement programs that deport innocent people. Therefore, defending my family will always be my first priority.

Interview: From Police Officer to Professor & Author

(bw)SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA - Danny Thomas Dunne-Ruiz is a retired police officer from Tracy, author of the Blue Mexican, a novel published in 2009 and currently works as English teacher at San Mary s High School and the San Joaquin Delta College.

What started as a part time job at the Tracy Police Department, for the young Dunne-Ruiz turned into a police career of twenty years.

“I went from a dispatcher to a patrol man, to detective sergeant.”

Dunne-Ruiz was a police officer during the 1960 s early 1970s a time frame he describes as “turbulent.” “There was a lot of change going on culturally, socially and economically in America,” in America and in small towns like Tracy.

After Dunne- Ruiz retired from the Tracy PD he felt the need to go back to school.

Eventually, Dunne- Ruiz completed a Bachelor’s degree and a Master degree in English and Literature at the University of the Pacific.

He was born in Louisiana, but was raised as an “army brat” in Italy.

H i s lo v e f or l i t e r at u r e developed as kid, “We never had a TV and so we were always reading,” added Dunne-Ruiz. “I fell in love with reading and storytelling.”

This is how the ex-cop went from preventing crime on the streets to teaching kids in the classrooms.

“Teaching is more rewarding because you are teaching the young and you can help shape some of their values.”

Dunne-Ruiz hopes to inspire

his students to love literature and appreciate the art of storytelling as much as he does.

I n 2 0 0 9 D u n n e - R u i z published the book, “The Blue Mexican”

The title of the book “The Blue Mexican” has a double meaning, explains the author, the word blue describes the color of the uniform of a police man, but also sets a tone for the mood of the book.

“Blue, is the things that you had to witness or experience that were hurtful not only to me but to others who were subjects of prejudice and discrimination growing up.”

It took Dunne-Ruiz five years to complete the entire book manuscript; it was not until he discovered a family secret regarding his father’s identity that he decided to look back at his manuscript.

Dunne-Ruiz always believed he was half Irish because of his father. Later in his life he discovered that the man he thought was his father was actually his step father, and that his biological father is Mexican like her mother.

“That made me a full blooded Mexican.” It was then that Dunne decided to add his father s last name Ruiz, to his name.

“When I found out who I was I thought it was time to finish this book.”

For Ruiz the message of his book is to, “stand up for what you believe in no matter what the odds are ,” as well as to emphasize the importance of respect, “respect for humanity, respect for the culture , because respect what is lacking in our society.”

Tomó cinco años a Dunne Ruiz, el completar el manuscrito del libro entero, y no fue hasta que descubrió un secreto de familia con respecto a la identidad de su padre, que decidió mirar hacia atrás a su manuscrito.

Dunne-Ruiz siempre creyó que era mitad irlandés por parte de su padre. Más adelante , descubrió que el hombre que pensó que era su padre en realidad su padrastro, y su padre biológico era Mexicano como su madre.

“Eso me hizo un mexicano de sangre completo.” Fue entonces que Dunne decidió añadir el apeido de su padre “Ruiz” a su nombre.

“Cuando me enteré de quién era yo pensé que era tiempo de terminar este libro.”

Para Dunne-Ruiz el mensaje de su libro es de “defender lo que usted cree, sin importar cuáles son las probabilidades”, así como enfocarse en la importancia del respeto, “el respeto a la humanidad, el respeto a la cultura, porque es respeto lo que falta en nuestra sociedad. “

I fear that rental companies who cannot rent unsafe cars to Federal Employees will push them off to the general public,” Said Angela Wright who is required to travel for work regularly in rental vehicles. “I will be in a rental car for at least two weeks just this month.”

Senator Boxer and Congresswoman Capps announced the letter at a press conference at Santa Barbara Airport today. They were joined by Cally Houck of Ojai, California, the mother of Raechel and Jacqueline, who along with Hertz and consumer groups has endorsed the new House and Senate rental car safety legislation.

Whittock along w ith her community night watch team organized the first National N i g h t O u t e v e n t i n h e r community; sending a message to criminals her neighborhood is fighting back.

With live entrainment, music, communit y resources and food, Whittock encouraged her neighbors to go out and joined the festivities.

“There is still hope despite all

the crime. You guys represent that hope,” said Michael Tubbs, candidate for Stockton City Council.

“We cannot act independent f r o m e a c h o t h e r a n d b e successful,” said Whittock, “we partnered up with business on Weber and Miner Street and with the ACE train station…this is a community effort.”

“We are trying to reconnect,” added Whittock

Tubbs continue his speech remembering the words of the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., “he [Martin Luther King Jr.] said, ‘where do we from

now, chaos or community? I ask the same question, where do we go from now Stockton, chaos or community? chaos has a whole generation of young people without hope…. it’s going to take all of us to turn this city around.”

Both Tubbs and Whittock agree that Nat ional Night Out cannot be only one day of the year. Whittock hopes to continue with similar events in her community throughout the year.
