Over the past two years, the Asian consumer has pushed the world’s internet in new directions. Payments, videos, games and shopping have become hugely popular mobile activities in Asia before they did inthe West. Are these Asian consumers going to set the next phase of growth in the global Internet space? In the wealthiest economies, it’s becoming clear that the Internet in general and the mobile Internetin particular have become serious economic forces, changing how this region exports goods and culture.Meanwhile, millions of new internet users will enter the cyberspace. They will build their Internet fromdifferent foundations than the ones Western companies and businesses did ten years ago. What willhappen when this extra billion people arrive on the global marketplace for ideas? Who are they? Whatare their needs? How will they be different and what should the rest of us do to prepare?

ICT enabled Government – a new approach to buying and using ICT from Victoria, Australia

The Victorian Government has recently released an ICT Strategy that sets out a roadmap to deliverbetter services, reduce waste, encourage innovation and improve ICT procurement across government. The Strategy is intended to help align processes across departments and set clear lines of governance, accountability and direction.

The Strategy ushers in new principles for ICT within government – such as a clearer focus on outcomesrather than detailed technical specifications, clearer accountabilities, greater use of industry expertise, innovation and stronger project management.

Panellists

The Customer is King. Owing to social media and other avenues that allow your customersto spread the word about your ICT services more quickly and to a wider audience, customerstoday wield more power than ever. To compound the issue, recent research has indicatedthat customers are twice as likely to tell others about a bad experience over a positive one.

For the ICT industry, this has massive implications. Companies can no longer focus onproviding a service the way they think is best; the customer is now calling the shots inmany of the decisions and actions that might have been in companies’ control traditionally.

The success of your business, therefore, may depend on how well you meet the needs ofyour customers and how you respond in the event that things do not go as well as planned.

• How can ICT companies give customers the right to provide input into their marketingdecisions in an effective manner?

• What are the key considerations to ensure that customers are equipped with the rightresources to resolve problems concerning your products/services?

• Focusing on business process transformation from the outside in• Is implementing a standard communication channel what your customers want?• Should you increase all social media activities? How can social media be a more effective

customer engagement tool?

ADDRESSING CAPACITY ISSUES IN MOBILE BROADBAND

13.50 Improved Customer Experience through Wi-Fi and DSL ManagementCellular networks are buckling from overwhelming mobile-data. Consequently, wireless carriers increasingly rely on offload of this data traffic to Wi-Fi networks. These offloading-to-Wi-Fi extended cellular networks need to perform at similar orbetter levels than existing cellular networks, and thus must ensure seamless hand-offs and good throughput.

Indeed, Wi-Fi offloading now constitutes the majority of wireless data traffic, andthe backhaul for this Wi-Fi is predominately fixed-line copper. Developments in DSLtechnology and in network diagnostics and optimization are helping to improve thethroughput of these offloading cellular networks.

The quality of user experience of virtually all future data traffic critically depends onthe management of both Wi-Fi and fixed-line copper networks. This presentationdescribes the latest technology advances and best practices for Wi-Fi offloading andhigh speed Internet access.John M. Cioffi, CEO and Chairman of the Board, ASSIA

14.10 New Approaches to Radio Access NetworksConventional Radio Access Networks are becoming too expensive for mobile operatorsto remain competitive whilst being faced with the surge in mobile internet traffic.Although revenues are falling, mobile operators are facing the prospect of spendingbillions of dollars to upgrade their backhaul and core network to keep up withgrowing demand. This presentation will offer new approaches on architecting radionetworks that can support the sophisticated centralised interference managementrequired by heterogeneous networks and have the flexibility to migrate services tothe network edge.

14.30 Emerging Technologies in Backhaul Spectrum ConservationAs data traffic increases and spectrum becomes more congested, interlink interferencebecomes a more important consideration. Facing these new realities, operators arestruggling for solutions that won’t break their budgets. At the same time, mobile data demand continues to skyrocket despite the economicrecession, resulting in a need for additional capacity to improve the user experience.Further to that, industry analysts are expecting wireless backhaul solutions to makeup for 58% of the total small cell backhaul links. In summary, both the development speed and breadth of adoption of newtechnologies are critical components to any solution in the face of increasing challengesof coverage, capacity and cost – the three legs of C3 solutionsThis session will explore economically conserving spectrum by utilising new tighterantennae radiation patterns based on emerging technologies.Dipesh Rattan, Product Line Director – Microwave Systems, CommScope

13.30 BYOD and the Connected EmployeeThe growing acceptance of the BYOD trend has translated into a new set of challengesfor CIOs. This includes defining their enterprise mobility strategy. For MNCs in Asia-Pacific, this is even more challenging as they have to cope with the various aspectsof mobility across a region that is extremely fragmented in terms of service availability, network quality, workplace practices, culture, and regulatory environment. Thediscussion will focus on:• Enterprise mobility trends to watch• What is BYOD and what is driving it?• Market landscape: large enterprises and consumerisation• What does it mean to users, CIOs and the business and how to effectively face it?Claudio Castelli, Senior Analyst, Enterprise, Ovum
